Jackal packs remain together for life. Having his entire squad murdered definitely screwed him up. I feel sorry for him. Imagine having your lifelong friends slaughtered, getting your butt kicked by their killer, being deemed "too much of a waste of time to finish off," and being left with nothing. And the next time you meet their killer, said killer doesn't even remember you.
It really bugs me that the writers for this game made Shadow kill people. Like yes, he tends to be violent but he never straight out kills people. Like what were his motives? He could just beat them up until they can't fight anymore and leave them be. But nope, he straight out just kills them off screen.
Finally someone else acknowledges this. Even if the story of Episode Shadow doesn't flow coherently into the plot if Forces, Infinite still has good reason to be upset, even if the dialogue was atrocious. I hate that they made Shadow do that

Keep in mind he was evil before all of this happened, so maybe Shadow trouncing him was his motivation in going through with the Phantom Ruby incorporation. I like Infinite-he’s pretty cool, and the fact that he leaves a lot left to be desired adds more mystery to him, regardless if it was intentional or not.
@darthrevan9100 the backstory cutscene was toned down so the game could remain kid friendly, as was the general theme of most of the sonic games in the 2010s era. However, by looking at the Sonic comics, and through interviews with Ian Flynn (one of the main sonic writers), you'll find his actual backstory a lot more complicated than that. Infinite was a former outlaw with a bleak outlook on life. He was the captain of Jackal Squad, a pack of his closest friends he knew and cared about. If you look in Sonic Forces: Rise of Infinite, an official Sonic Comic made by Ian Flynn, you actually get to see Jackal Squad, along with Infinite unmasked leading them, attack one of Eggman's bases. Eggman tries to defend himself with the phantom ruby, so Infinite goes in for the kill and strikes his blade at the ruby. However instead of breaking, it shows the two of them the future Infinite desires. A post-apocalyptic world with ruined buildings and no life in sight. Eggman takes a liking to Infinite and offers him a place among the eggman empire to help transform the world. Infinite orders his squad to stand down and accepts the doctor's proposition. Things don't last long though, as very soon after, Shadow attacks the base. The entirety of Jackal Squad, who were tasked with guarding the base, are completely and helplessly wiped out by Shadow. Ian Flynn once pointed out in an interview that they said "destroyed" in the ingame dialogue as a less harsh way of saying "murdered". As a previous comment pointed out, Jackal packs stick together for life, so this causes extreme amounts of grief and anger and sadness for the jackal Infinite. He ignores Eggman's taunting of his useless squad, and goes in for the kill on Shadow to take revenge for the lives of his fallen brethren, but he isn't even able to land a hit on Shadow. Shadow beats him up and permanently scars the right side of his face. And the worst part is, Shadow doesn't even care. He probably forgot about the encounter seconds after it happened. He delivers a quick taunt to Infinite about how worthless he was trying to face him, and then disappears. Infinite at this point is completely ruined. His lifelong friends are dead, his face is gone, and his whole identity is ruined. He felt powerless and pathetic, not even strong enough to take revenge on his slain companions. That's why the Phantom Ruby. That's why the mask, and that's why the new identity. He was powerless to exacting vengeance on those he cared for, and he doesn't want to feel powerless ever again. Of course it's infuriating that you have to go digging for this information and it doesn't just tell you outright in the game. Anyway, congratulations if you made it through this whole ramble without falling asleep. Hope this helps

Awesome Video! Sonic Forces is Sonic's version of Majora's Mask. Which makes Zero/Infinite Sonic's version of Skull Kid. And The Phantom Ruby is like The Majora's Mask itself.
I love how Infinte immediatley proves Shadows point by getting an emotional breakdown. Then he got diamond powers and a mask, acting all tough. But in reallity, he is just a bully that takes his frustation out on the weak just to make him self feel strong. Hell, he wasn't even that good of a fighter. He beat Sonic once, but only because he had the element of suprise and he was using all the older villain copies. After that, all he got was get his ass kicked, by both Sonic and the Rookie. Infinte most villainaus trait was that he was a feeble prick.
sonic was actaully right how he said he can grow and become more powerful every second since in those 3 scenes: 6:37, 10:12 and 19:13 how sonic got smacked then he smacks infinite.
