I've seen so many of these videos I'm starting to talk like Derek. At dinner last night, I told my wife her steak was tougher than Dirty Harry. I may be eating alone tonight.
I started doin' that two episodes in, but I'm bad for that. Been living all over the world for 61 years, so I catch accents within hours. I love the country folk way of speaking from the heart tho.
Im talking like him too. I choked on an m&m while i was driving and my wife got scared, and in the middle of coughing to death i said "power through it" and my wife started cracking up.
Try it through some sort of av system or ln my case I did a Bluetooth link through my trucks Bluetooth radio. This one, like the beast 80s drag chevelle. They literally vibrate the cab and mirrors 😂
Now that Independence is finished, I thought I’d come right back around to where it all started. It is great to see the car that this became and the community it brought together. Thank you Derek.
This guy's videos are pretty much the only ones I watch full length because every minute is pure comedy gold. It's got a red green vibe with a splash of crazy. Love it.
The frame fix with duck tape and a straight face is classic! "You know, just keep going til ya feel safe. ... It's already much sturdier. I can see that right away. .... Fixed."
She doesn't want to die and now you've fixed the frame, she is half way to concourse condition. ;) Seriously, I would love to see you restore her. Would be an awesome finish to her thirty years of neglect.
I read this before seeing the end of the video so when he mentioned fixing the fame, I was intrigued and even more caught off guard by the duct tape. Laughed very hard.
The cars toast honestly all the panels are half eaten at by rust and the frames rotted , if it was a car with an actual decent value or rarity, or sentimental value then I’d agree but it’s just not worth restoring
How does a guy drive a patina'd American flag paint job, 1 headlight, NO license plate, headliner hanging in your face, 600 miles across state lines and NOT get pulled over??? Awesome channel, Derek. That's fiiiiinnnne.

@@ViceGripGarage I did a little on-line research and a replacement aftermarket chassis starts at $10K and can go up to $20K. There's also a lot of rot in the panels. Add in interior, paint, engine refresh, etc. and you're looking at a car that you'd have to get $60K for. But that's not the kind of guy you are. You're a fix the mechanicals, make it safe to drive, and flip it guy. Even that will run up the bucks. So when you ask us what you should do with it all I can say is: "I don't know."

Suggested throwaway line for monologue: "I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on TV." after wondering why she's wandering. Love the setup for the test drive. Shot selection, music, feature film quality production. You just keep getting better.
This was hilarious to watch but whatever possessed you to purchase that Chevelle in the first place? How did you get to the location in the first place, since you had all those tools, bus ? Also, how did you get to the parts store? Bus, taxi ?
Love rewatching this video favorite quote is “Everyone’s got there special tools in their toolbox but if you don’t got 10 feet of fuel line you need to do a self evaluation in life” 😂
I take a whole bucket of fuel lines and vacuum hoses, with plenty of clamps and zip ties. @ gas cans and a new battery and at least one drain pan. I never change the plugs unless I need to clean them. always check the brake and all the fluid levels. I'd used the air filter rig in the trunk with a new filter. Was nicee the fuel tank wasn't too badly gummed up.
I drove by this car a few years ago. It was sitting in a field in Bloomington, Indiana. I wanted to stop and look at it, but I was working and didn't have time that day. I am so glad to see that you kept the patriotic paint scheme and the work you have done on this car is amazing. I love your channel and I've learned a lot from you. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, where has this channel been all my life. I've been drifting around watching those soul less overproduced "PowerNation" shows. Finding you standing there on the side of a back road looking at a rotted out Chevelle was a breath of fresh air. You won me over right there. I'm hooked.
Pure continuous humor. "My brain just reminded me I'm six-hundred miles from home and this is my chariot" (proceeds to duct tape over rusted out frame rail). You are a natural entertainer, Derek. Thanks a bunch for the ride.
Just rewatching this episode, for like the 20th time, right now. Love how you saved this car from the crusher and really made it into something extra special. It’s a shame that she keeps getting beat up in competition, but she would have been scrap by now anyway. Hopefully if she gets too beat up she can get like a 50% resto, just to keep her on the road.
I'm not sure why I was genuinely expecting a pro tip when you decided to address the frame, but ya got me...these videos are where it's at, Derek. Great stuff, glad it worked out.
Watched this the day it came out , and again about a year ago. Now today for nostalgic reasons. Independence may now be retired , but she lives on in Charolette . I bet that dealer never thought that car would become one of the most famous cars in the world . All because you took us with you every step of the way. Genius …
Im with these guys; that ole girl hauled you 600 miles with no breakdowns, even if her tongue was hanging out by the end. I say fix the frame, see if you can get the engine running better, then throw a back seat in her and make some memories
@@ViceGripGarage :O I'm....slightly surprised that a channel owner responded to a comment thread i was in :D Seriously though, the body on that seems rotten where all Chevelle's go, so if it were me in your shoes/boots, I would do just what i said: fix the frame, see if you can revive the old 350, replace the back seat so you can bring friends/keep the exhaust out, and just make some memories. Heck i wouldn't even repaint it, its got a character all its own just for making that trip home

I just watched this episode *again* after watching the final burnout at the freedom factory. Great circle closure. Round as a flat dry rotted cracked tire, but you brought it full circle - just like the donughts in the burnout pit there. Now time to make some more circles with her, bring her on tours around the U.S. I'm waiting to see her in California. Great videos Derek,Mrs Derek & the little Dereks. This one was recommended to me 12 million times before I finally watched and it was a good one! Well done, sir! Looking forward to the rest. I think it's fascinating how many cars there are like this exactly 600 miles from you in every direction.
I've never cared anything about cars, in fact, I felt agitated because my dad seemed meticulous about them when I was a child. He loves your channel and started using youtube after accidentally getting your suggestion on my mom's account, he even got a tv in his garage now and ditched cable with velocity tv or something. I sat down this Christmas to watch it with him cause he wanted me to laugh with him while he watched an episode. Long short, I ended up watching a lot of episodes since I have been in town. I've been able to enjoy cars with my dad for once and actually find what you do interesting as a project and your sense of humor. You were made for this. Thanks mate, repairing cars and families.
You sir are a bloody legend, Im over in the UK and im addicted to your channel, How the hell are you going to top that one?. Keep the vids coming, buddy i cant think of a better way to get through this lock down than watching your adventures so thank you for that. Keep safe. Steve
Here in the UK he would have been evicted from the motel and had the police called after the first night of it sat out front lol, and as for driving it on the road home, i would give that idea about 20mins tops before he gets pulled over and the book thrown at him lol.
Derek, your entertainment and humor genes are very dominant and pristine. I find myself enjoying all your content, although these "Will it run and drive x miles" are clearly my favorite. Your ability to keep one hooked through the entire video is a skill VERY few posses. Thank you! Greetings from Denmark

By far my favorite channel. Love how you bring these old cars most people wouldn’t even consider taking a second look at and getting them up and back on the road. Love it.
If you don’t like Derek or don’t understand his sense of humor then, just go watch one of the other millions of channels out there & let the rest of us who actually get it & laugh, enjoy it!!! Go complain somewhere else!!!
I have decided that the reason I like this channel so much is that Derek gets these barn-finds going and they are almost all familiar makes and models from my youth. I wish I had the time/money to do what he does around here. Mostly because I live in a dry environment and the rust isn't as big of an issue for me. To see some old cars that resemble the ones I worked on as a teenager running again would be quite a thrill.
This guy is simply hysterical. Such dry, understated humor. And he's just great with cars. Entertaining and enlightening at the same time. Hollywood should take a clue.
You’re a brave man taking that thing on the highway.... But... the old girl made it.... My old man used to say that the only tools you needed to carry with an old Chevy was a 1/2 inch , a 9/16 ,a pair of vice grips and a roll of tie wire and you could fix pretty much anything that went wrong on the road.... I still have those items in my trunk..A feller never knows when you might need them.... great video!!!
I'd have to say.... THIS specific vehicle (independence) is what made your channel go viral!! Doing what you do...ur humorous personality and nature has always been perfect and enjoyable for everyone and all age groups.....but what I believe started after this revival and took shape for a long couple years just blew up VGG forever keep her shinning forever....I've watched everything y'all have put out for content (but a guy realized that I didn't like n commented on all episodes) and I'm doing a review of everything again (making sure to like n comment to boost anything I can) n I gotta say it ol independence is VGG!!!! Now she's retired when can we respectfully see some updates on her...? Fellers n fellets might enjoy that 🤏👌😎
Or the 3rd option of a completely busted, ratted out motor that backfires all the time and leaks every fluid and is only bein' held together by poverty chrome and zip ties.
Watching this again on father's day, '22 and can't help but say you've come a loooonnnnggg way VGG!!!! Try it through some sort of av system or ln my case I did a Bluetooth link through my trucks Bluetooth radio. This one, like the beast 80s drag chevelle. They literally vibrate the cab and mirrors 😂
You should blow everybody's minds and actually restore this. There's no such thing as too far gone. But restore it on a budget a fella can live with.

I can see that right away. .... Fixed."

I read this before seeing the end of the video so when he mentioned fixing the fame, I was intrigued and even more caught off guard by the duct tape. Laughed very hard.

How does a guy drive a patina'd American flag paint job, 1 headlight, NO license plate, headliner hanging in your face, 600 miles across state lines and NOT get pulled over??? Awesome channel, Derek. That's fiiiiinnnne.

I have decided that the reason I like this channel so much is that Derek gets these barn-finds going and they are almost all familiar makes and models from my youth.
