- I flew to Florida to pick up a non-running 1969 AMC Rebel. It's rare it's in own right - but this one is a one of a kind because MID ENGINE! That's right - engine is in the FRONT SEAT! Think I can get it running and drive 800 miles back home?

I think the quick simple fix is remove the hood and put the driver's seat in the engine compartment.

Couldn't he build a dog house all the way to the firewall like a van has to help keep the fumes and heat out of the car but I'm glad that he chose his health over anything else

I'm not a doctor or even an emt, but I think carbon monoxide can be accumulated in the body over time, so maybe it's a better idea to take a break and trailer it the rest of the way home.
That car's mid engine mod is a perfect example of the old adage of, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Still, I love watching your vids. Keep up the great work!

I feel like the term firewall was a complete mystery to who ever built this thing.
I recently discovered this channel a few weeks ago and quickly realized Derek is not only a great mechanic with resourceful and logical thinking, but has a real ability to create his humour in a completely dead pan way that had the wife and myself laughing so hard and for so long we had to replay part of the episode after pausing to catch our breath and to wipe our eyes! He is one of these folks that takes difficult problems and makes it look easy as he fixes and repairs what others have abandoned. Then drives it home! I’m glad he relented during this drive as it was pretty obvious it was getting unhealthful. But funny? Oh yeah! Thank you!

I thought the same. Dereck, you are going to die early from doing this. It wont be pleasant. Seriously, you already work amongst all the poisonous fumes and I think you just doubled the damage you may have done already just by driving this car. Dont mean to be so serious and a downer, but damn.. it's for real. I like the car, body style and what not, but it would need the motor put back where it belongs, not in your lap. Would be a great project with multiple videos to make it a street rod. Take good care.

It's a medical proven fact that even a long time cigarette smoker, after the last cigarette smoked, the body starts repairing the damage to the lungs. So with that being said Dereck doesn't drive these types of mechanical altered vehicles every day. YES HE WILL BE OK.

I was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a car in the late seventies and still feel effects to this day from that happening. Carbon monoxide is not something that gets out of your blood too easily and being around it from car exhaust just makes it come right back once you had the experience of too much build up in your bloodstream.
Snorcel! As in scuba diving gear, or in this case scuba driving gear 😉 that should have helped in this particular case.
AMC did have some innovation.
The Rebel was a beast.
I'm 2 years late watching this but it's the best episode yet. An insane car, golden humour and real perseverance to get that far! Thanks Derek, I'm not sure if you really know just how entertaining you are, but there's an English fella in Australia that's loving every minute of it!!
This thing is giving off a strong "die in a flaming wreck" kinda vibe. At least you can pour the starter fluid down the fuel make it happener right from the comfort of the drivers seat👍

I was so very delighted to see this one roll out of Matt's barn for the last time, and I silently whispered an earnest prayer for the next unfortunate soul to pilot this pos. That said, it is indeed an awesome body style; one definitely worthy of Derek's sage ingenuity. Brothers, I don't think we've seen the last of this Rebel just yet!

Probably one of the most entertaining hour of content I’ve watched in awhile. Can’t even believe you drove that death trap 500+miles. This was like watching a horror flick with humor. I’m glad you stopped when you did cause CO is no joke. And to think how I used to panic driving my Merkur on long trips wondering when something was going to fail. That was child’s play compared to your adventures. Just wish I had your mechanic skills.

I'm in the same situation as him where he got tired of living in a deep freezer. As an old school amc lover, a guy who has owned over 30 amc cars of all different types and over 40 kaiser/amc jeeps. This ol rebel kinda breaks a guys heart. Too damn rare of a car to do that kinda hackery too. What a shame.

OMG! I feel so beat up! And I was not the crazy One who attempted the impossible! Much credit for you effort and persistence. I’m so glad you survived. I’ve decided I need to support your venture now cuz with acts like this one you may need for healthcare. Just hoping that never is the case. I have been watching most of your vids and now my wife is finally laughing at your comments. I was thinking of inviting friends over playing one of your videos and setting rules to everyone drinks when a numerous comment is heard but then thought we would be drunk in 10 minutes. I am totally impressed with how well the ol AMC seemed to just start up and run and totally amazed you hung with it as far as you did. I got to imagine that headache had to last for days afterwards from the fumes and smoke 💨

That car deserves to have the motor dropped back in the front and rebuilt correctly. I love the look of the ride, the stance is pretty solid. Glad you decided to call it when you did, cause a guy could probably run into some health issues otherwise… also, I’m sure you’re gonna smell like that trip for a day or two

I think you 'pulled the plug' at a good point. No need to breathe any more oil for our amusement. You are a TROOPER ! The only thing I thought of was put a series of radiator hoses off the oil filler to direct the blow by behind you. It's a fun car for nostalgia, I own a '67 Marlin , which is a very rare fish. AMC is definitely an eclectic taste in cars. I love all old cars and like alot of us, get to live vicariously thru You, Brother. Keep on Truckin'!

What an amazing build, cool idea done 1/4 assed.
About halfway thru, I was thinking a feller might go into Wallyworld and buy a hula hoop, a space blanket, and two rolls o'duct tape. Section that hoop into three even lengths and create a tent over the engine. Cover the whole thing with the spaceman blanket, and tape it down with BOTH rolls. Instant Econoline doghouse.
That being said I'm so glad you pulled the plug on this ride, Derek. We like our content provider continuing to enjoy cold snacks, working with the little humans, and sharing Jessica with us live occasionally. Key word LIVE

Just finished 2 x 14.5 hour shifts, cant sleep and its 2.30 in the mornin, you tube on an straight to VGG, fantastic.
Also the perfect way to unwind when you have to work until 10 p.m. on a Friday night, but you always run out of actual work to do around 7:30 or so.

Rear engine three on the tree double clutch conversion, or factree, I like to watch you suffer to save old iron. Best channel on the pick your own morality tubes. Someone should do it and you do. God bless you and yours.
My thoughts, too. Put the engine and trans back where they're supposed to be. Then custom fab a floor pan and trans hump cover at least in the original area. You'd have to find a salvage dashboard unit if that's even possible. Or fabricate a custom simple dash with simple gauges like an IH Scout, speedo, fuel, oil pressure, temp and volts. Floor mats, a pair of Recaro seats, a heater and vent system. That's too clean and solid a body to not make a decent street machine out of it. At least that's my take on it.

Carbon monoxide has about a 4.5-5hr half-life in your blood. So even after a sleep, you still have half the CO in your blood from when you went to sleep. This gets topped up higher with more exposure. Keep safe mate. Love your channel from here in Australia.

Home Depot - 1 piece of aluminum roofing and some adhesive heat shield. Harbor Freight - cheap cordless drill, drill bits, rivet tool, rivets and a chinesium set of sheet metal shears = engine cover.
I’m a commercial electrician, and 2 years ago, I experienced some of the worst headaches I’ve ever had in my life. Unfortunately, Derek, unlike you, it took me almost 6 to 8 weeks to finally correlate the headaches, w/ the bucket truck I was in. What made me not immediately link the two, I would only experience my headaches late at night. Having just bought a new house, I suspected it had something to do with my furnace, I even replaced both of my carbon monoxide detectors, just to be sure.

It definitely bothers me everytime he starts talking about CO in the cabin. I learned the hard way that it can be very serious. Nearly cost me my life. Thing everyone should know is CO will actually adhere to the blood and prevent it from oxygenating. Even though the levels in the cabin may not have reached incredibly dangerous levels the accumulative effect of being in it for so long can be very harmful.
co2 LOL. You mean Co? Carbon dioxide (Co2) Is dangerous as well as it replaces oxygen, but carbon monoxide (Co) Is much more dangerous.

I had a 1968 Rambler Rebel that I just could not fix back in the late 90's. It was so bad that it felt like you were driving a washing machine. I wish I could have keep it. Parts just don't exist for this beast. With the modern internet and youtube It would be easier today to work on today. 😂 I like the laughs that your videos have.

every piece of tin on floor and partial doghouse trans tunnel oilcan badly, there is a lot to correct and undo.
Previous owner was on drugs, make the car normal again. A firewall and floor can be found, knowing AMC it used the same pieces on multiple cars from that era
He could do something like B is For Build, and have a more modern donor car underneath the "shell"

May I suggest you move the engine back to the front of the car where it belongs, throw an aftermarket chevelle floor pan and firewall in it, do the same with the dash, replace the steering box along with the steering shaft and enjoy a really good looking vehicle. It's what I would do with it. Merry Christmas.
This, in some way^. Put the motor back where it belongs. Save that beautiful, no rust, shell. Heck, even ripping the engine out, not reinstalling it, but restoring the body work might be worth a profit.
I like how Derek is low-key, funny; he doesn’t make you piss your pants or have a stroke laughing it’s just mildly humorous and a lot of it. It makes you wonder where he gets this stuff? Does he have some relatives from Minnesota or something? I’ve seen him get very serious and drop all the joking around when it comes to building motors. When it’s important.

My very first car was a 1968 AMC Rebel straight 6 cylinder.. great car. I bought it for $500 and it had 56,000 miles in 1985
As a Gremlin owner,thanks for repping an AMC on here 🙂That engine is part of the AMC 287 and 327 V8 family,the 343 was part of the 290,304,343,360,390 and 401 thinwall cast AMC V8 which started in 1966.
In my youth I had a 65 Chevy van with no doghouse, and I felt ALL your pain, oil leaks everywhere, slinging it, burning it on the manifolds, dang it was smoky! Be safe Derek we love you and don't want to see you sick just to make a video, take care of yourself buddy 😃

I always write down the date, mileage and oil used on the lid of the filter box and tuck it somewhere where it'll get IMMEDIATELY lost!! Works good that way
I write it on the filter with a paint pen. Kinda hard to lose that.

The '56-'67 Rambler V8 is a great engine. American Motors would've surely gone out of business if the engine was not successful... but it was, truly, and AMC earned an excellent reputation for performance and durability 'in their Rambler days'
If that engine stayed where it was supposed to be, that would be a sweet project car

A friend of mine put me on to VGG and I'm hooked like the way he puts it across and loved this one just so lashed together we've all had ideas that should stay ideas so impractical but the best bit is leaving the fan on the engine why? 😂😂😂 Well done for getting so far with it
A guy is human after all. You have persevered through so much in such a upbeat way in all your videos. This one we could tell it dragged you down some. We all can relate and see you continued not giving up and for your subscribers. With that said, make sure you take care of yourself too!

Man o man, that’s “sketch level midnight” with that rig, Derek. I know you sometimes can push the envelope a bit just to provide us all with good content and we appreciate how hard you work. BUT please don’t get yourself hurt in the process. This feller would much rather have you safe and sound and around for many, many years to come. On a better note, I do LOVE the styling of that rig. Real clean lines with a sinister stance. Like an old Mopar muscle car. It would make a great series to do a full restoration back to it’s original configuration and a fully functional, clean and safe rig.
I agree it's laced with old Mopar and mid-60s Chevelle clean lines the body being so solid it's worthy of a full build but please keep it AMC they made some badass power plants
be scared to drive that funny car across the st. better get a fresh air system.

This looks like a good Body donor for a 'Nascarlo' type project. Throw everything under and in it away... far away.... then sit it on a tube chassis. Roundy round or maybe a 7.50 drag chassis.
This was one of the most fascinating videos you've done yet, Anyone that's done a similar trip in a sketchy rig can relate. I drove a $500.00 Ford F100 from Napa California home to Southern Vermont...through a blizzard on Donner Pass with summer tires..(got turned around by the chain Police)...the whole trip took me 5 days. The F100 was in slightly better shape than the Rebel. You made the right decision to put a stop to the lung torture. I can't wait for part II...This is hands down the best channel on TH-cam!
