I lived next-door to Rex for a little while. One of the nicest men I've ever met, happy to answer my questions and unannounced visit. Shew me lots of interesting stuff and so encouraging to everyone.

I remember watching the second series of robot wars as a kid and Cassius really did stand out from the rest, not only in design but how well it was controlled. RIP Rex Garrod a real pioneer

RIP to a true legend. I loved cassius. Going after the house robots and the pacman on the robot was amazing. As a kid I was gutted he didn't come back after series 3 was such good entertainment. Forever and always the king of roboteers
Very saddened to hear of Rex Garrod's passing earlier this month. Loved Brum and watching him go after the house robots with Cassius as a kid, especially 11:22, me and my dad were talking about it for weeks. Rip Rex and thanks for the memories and the inspiration
The godfather of the srimech, it all started from the roboteering/engineering genius that is Rex Garrod. Brilliant machine and way ahead of its time. 👍

Chaos also had a scrimech, but it's one failed in it's battle with Mace.
I was always disappointed that Cassius didn't become a mainstay in Robot Wars, they went out in the second round in the 3rd series and then never came back, I would love to see Rex Garrod create a new robot for the revamped series, because he was a brilliant roboteer back in the earlier series.

Rex Tried Too enter with Cassius 3 in the 4th wars but failed miserably after this rules conflict
There were actually quite a few behind-the-scenes controversies surrounding health and safety standards in Series 3. Cassius 2 was unfortunately affected by them when the production team effectively ruled that Cassius 2 could only use their CO2 bottle (which powered both the flipper and the new spike at the back) once per fight.
This, plus quite a few other incidents, including a rogue robot that injured one of the technical team, caused a few roboteers including Garrod to leave the competition altogether. It's even rumoured that Cassius 2 driving into the pit in its second round battle with Pussycat was Rex's protest exit from the show.
Sadly I don't think we'll know the truth of that drive, as Rex Garrod passed away in April last year.
Cassius was the best non house robot in the history of Robot Wars. That self righting arm was amazing plus it kicked the house robots arses as well
Or Firestorm, going after house robots multiple times and being the only robot to flip Mr. Psycho.

As you know, here in Britain the term 'totally crackers' is only ever used affectionately and with a smile about people we respect, but elsewhere in the world things may be different. I think the American equivalent would be to describe someone as "Crazy - like a fox!" (to wit: 'not crazy at all, but admirable for their unconventional ingenuity'). I hope nobody took offence. Oh, what a rogue and peasant slave am I...

Some people were all about winning on this show, Rex was always about the love of the hobby and he was at home helping out fellow teams when they had problems....that is sheer class!

Me and my dad have very different tastes even more so as a kid but robot wars was the one show we both loved and Cassius was one of my all time favourites, that first self right was awesome to witness as a kid I was truly shocked

I absolutely love Rex's attitude towards it all. Immobilise the opponent without destroying it and go on to attack the house robots with full venom!
All his life he's encouraged kids to get into engineering and robotics, I can totally see his point!

Ohhhh Rex. You remind me so much of some of the wonderful men I have known in my life. Men who taught me to do things that I should be able to do. Many of these I learned. I'm shit at sharpening knives, but I can do a valve grind on and set the tappets on a 1910-1980's engine if I have the tools.I have done plenty of electronics but I'm colour blind and can't codes resistors. If a legacy is the point of a life I sure hope you get to rest easy.

Rex didn't return to robotwars because of safety... or lack of safety. There was an incident in either s2 or s3 and he wasn't happy hence why he didn't return.

God, Rex was such a good sport, too. Keeping the House Robots away from his opponents as much as he could.
Remember watching that final live. Panic attack wasn't even in the same league and got away with it
The big problem with the second series is because of all the trial stuff they do. Robots weren't built with the primary intention of fighting. It was always going to favour a rambot like Panic Attack.
11:23 was where Cassius was cemented as my most favorite robot in the series.
back in the day self righting was almost elegant. These days when a robot self rights it's like a violent explosion and they sometimes have to do it 2 or 3 times because they do a 360 flip and end up upside-down again lol

I remember seeing a news report of him building something to allow people with certain disabilities to fly a plane or something to that effect I was very young at the time, man was truly amazing
