Man what a semi final this was! There's so many great highlights. 4:20: Was that a birdcall? 4:33: Any robot willing to duke it out with the Sentinel like that must have some serious cahones! 6:55: Shunt drunk driving and King Buxton's classy driving 9:36: The Punderbird boys doing what they do best. Be entertainingly cringy 13:11: "We promise not to kill you if ya get us thru." :D Gotta love 'em 16:58: And a legend is born! Cassius vs Hardwaark was a really close one. Even with the house robot interference that could've gone either way. Roadblock vs King Buxton, what are the odds that the smallest robot in the heat had to fight the biggest. Its almost bullying but King Buxton put up a good fight to the end
Compared to the heats this series, the semi-finals are far better, as you would expect. Plunderbird as a team is always a great laugh, even if their robot isn't particularly good! This series is probably the best it ever got! The fights for the semi-finals are great too, far better than the heat fights, I mean just look at Killertron vs Behemoth in semi-final 1 and a damage it did. Cassius is the first self-righting mechanism that worked, but just imagine if George Francis had remembered to put a wedge on the back of Chaos, because he tried self-righting with his weapon but it wasn't quite powerful enough, and if he had a wedge it would have successfully flipped, granted not as spectacularly as Cassius here.
Wonderful semis. Two excellent robots going to the finals, and well-deserved positions too. Honestly Roadblock is such an ace robot they'd be just fine as a house robot.
Does anyone know what the Plunderbird theme song is called, and if it's available anywhere? I wanted a copy of it 25 years ago, and seeing this made me remember what a banger it is.
Another great semi-final, just like the last one. Great robots in this, and Plunderbird is always great fun! Their theme song and personality really makes them charismatic, bringing character to the pits! The pinball was a bit unfair really, Killalot had a lot of free reign and interfered too much in Haardvark and G.B.H's runs. The battles, though, were great just like last time. Cassius really is a great robot for this series, and Road Block is just as good as it was in series 1. Cassius vs Haardvark was very good, they put up a good fight but it was really no contest against Cassius. Roadblock vs King Buxton was also surprisingly good too, since King Buxton can run both ways up but the new saw for Road Block is far better than they had last series.
The fact that Buxton was the only one to complete the gauntlet, purely by luck since Shunt knocked the sphere out of the way before pitting, is a huge testament to how pointless this part of the competition was. Honestly, the fact that no one else got more than halfway down the course is just the icing on the cake.
The House Robots have been a real pest this entire series. They keep shoving themselves into affairs too soon, not giving the contending robot a proper chance before getting overwhelmed by them. I think they fix this in later series, but it's still irksome to watch.
Once again that stupid 'gauntlet' makes a complete nonsense and lottery of results. King Buxton had almost a free ride courtesy of Shunt's mistake (no discredit to KB, they made the most of their opportunity). Cassius was blocked by that same Shunt. Plunderbird was picked on by the house robots and dragged back to the start. This had nothing to do with the quality of the bots and everything to do with sheer luck and how hard the house robots attacked them. Just as well the stupid idea was dropped in Series 3.
@@jakemills7835 Probably. Well if it was fiction I'd ignore it completely. But the target audience has nothing to do with it. Competitors (who are adults) put a lot of work into their robots and they deserve to be treated equally and fairly. I think everyone has a sense of what is 'fair' and is annoyed by unfair treatment.
@@cr10001 Watching as an adult does open your eyes to just how much they made it unfair. I actually quite like the concept of the gauntlet and trial, it's good to have them do other things than just build a massive weapon, unfortunately it does make it completely unfair, even if you remove the house robots really obvious targeting, the people driving them will always have preferences. I thought the far more obvious and ridiculous moment was when Haardvark somehow got Cassius into the patrol zone and tries to keep Cassius in there and Killalot just attacks Haardvark. Even the commentary makes a point of saying that isn't fair but they just carry on. I can remember even as a child being like that is just stupid, why bother having them fight at all if you're going to do that. Really clearly a case of 'Make bloody sure Cassius doesn't lose now Mortis is out too'
@@tufty1990 The gauntlet wasn't in itself a bad idea, but the house robots seemed to attack some bots much more than others. Equally, the trial was not in itself a bad idea, but they had different tests for different heats - so how well a bot did was partly down to whether it was drawn in a heat that 'suited' it or not. But I did think having the gauntlet / trial in a semifinal was inappropriate - all the bots had already faced that in their heats. They should just have let the semifinalists fight it out.
@@cr10001 Yeah completely, I mean how many times do you see a clear favourite drive straight through with no attempt made to stop them and sometimes no house robot in sight and then the next run all three/four house robots all in one lane just blocking the route Watching back, the trials especially are ridiculously full of moments where you feel there's been a backstage conversation with the people controlling the house robots along the lines of 'That one looks good/competitive/fun/a bit different, make sure they get through'.
Wonder if GBH driving into the pit intentionally on Gauntlet contributed to them getting rid of it in the next series. I certainly think the producers weren't happy about it because I'm not convinced Haardvark got more points than them on Pinball.
The 'trial' competition was fun though. Roadblock's run that included Martha going into the pit was... satisfying. And Cassius's self-righting flip (was that the first on RW?) after Killalot overturned it was a delightful surprise. But that aside, once again the house robots were a capricious random nuisance and played far too much part in the results.

This is maximum Plunderbird. Electro music, big talk, and failure in the arena itself.
They were memelords before the word even existed
They're absolutely awful, but you can't help but love them!
I love how Plunderbird have a theme song. Also, awesome to see Cassius with a proper self-righting mechanism!
R.I.P Rex Garrod
Oh no I just looked it up
Absolutely heartbreaking. He'll always be a Robot Wars icon to me
Rest in peace indeed. He was a great roboteer and will be remembered for two awesome robots and the first self-righting mechanism!
You flipped them back up? - But they are really nice people -. So you were Gentleman Rex Garrod. You will be sorely missed... :-(
Back in the days when a srimech was the most extraordinary thing ever seen! Classic.
16:59 History is made!
Technically, Biohazard, of BattleBots fame, was the first.
And thus a legendary piece of robot accessory was born, the srimech.

Plunderbird II theme song surprisingly slaps!

Plunderbird was a series semi finalist yet they never mention it in series after this .
I think Roadblock must have slipped the housebots a few cans, they were absolutely smashed!

Wait. Plunderbird won a heat?!?!

Do you ever think you might be taking a tv show aimed primarily at children a bit too seriously?

All she did by lifting that cinder block was show that she's pretty strong.
"Do we get 15 points for being carried over the ramp?" 😂

Cassius was the first robot to successfully self right. Better robots followed and copied afterwards.
9:14 - 10:12 Here just for Robot's Revenge!!!
Strange they don't go the ram rig?
9:38 Someone call Simon Cowell.
What kinda of shitty company doesn't let their employee have ONE day off for the Robot Wars semi final?! Name and shame the cants. 12:15
