He is the parallel to Walt. A guy with a nice guy facade who, underneath it, is actually ruthless and willing to demolish anyone around him to achieve his goals. Both are involved in the most high-stakes chaotic scenarios of their lives, and both fuck up at critical junctures, leading to their demise.
If you get arrested, and formally charged, then perhaps you can cut a deal, immunity, witness protection, turn state's evidence. Until the charges come, don't say a word. Don't assume anything you say or do will lead to a deal no matter what they say. A deal is something your lawyer, the prosecutor, and judge have to work out. Not the police/DEA/FBI.
You know what a lawyer is going to tell you? Don't talk to the cops. Even when he gets there, if he is any good at all, he will prevent you from speaking to them WITH HIM THERE. Don't talk to the police.
If Hank had taken some time to collect himself and approach the conversation from a different angle, this would’ve worked out much better for him. It’s entirely his fault that she didn’t talk- he came at her not as family but as a cop
She was never talking no matter what he did. Skylar was complicate and or an accessory to the crimes of a drug lord. She was a lot of things but outright brain dead was not one of them. she's certainly smart enough to know that no deal Hank could make with her would have stood, seeing as he would have been put on administrative leave the very second he brought walt in. You don't get to be in chage of investigations of your first teir realtions and you certainly don't get to make informal protection for testimony agreements. She also knows that Hank has nothing that will stand up on it's own, otherwise he would have just arrested Walt. The problem is Hank is a dumbass who thinks skyler is a victim at this point, not the head of the laundering set up. He would have been unemployed but still alive if he had followed protocol instead of pulling this cowboy shit.
As soon as Hank knew Walter was Heisenberg, he should have recused himself. It avoids ugly family situations like this. Get another agent assigned to the case.
It was personal though. You'd be upset too if you found out the man you considered as a brother had lied to and betrayed you. Not easy just to let that shit go
yeah I agree with arkansasgamer. That was the whole point. A family member had evaded him from right under his nose for years. This was vengeance as much as it was justice. HE wanted to be the one to topple Heisenberg. No one else.
angc214 The physical evidence was too low for a new agent to take over for. Hank was the only one to know who to look for and he found the buried cash within days.
@@TheAireaidLord A year and a half to be precise. But yeah, Hank was pissed that Walt had been playing him that long and using him. Handing it off to another agent would still mean having to admit to the D.E.A. that his brother was Heisenberg. Hank's career would go down the toilet.
I was one of few people who didn’t hate Skylar the first time I watched Breaking Bad. I’m rewatching it now, and I sympathize with her situation all the more. Sure, she’s not a charismatic or lovable character, but she’s compelling and believable. The way her anger and desperation came out so frantically felt so real, like you were watching an actual person’s marriage crumble in real time.
Same. After all the Skyler hate i saw before watching the show i went into it assuming i was going to hate her guts. But that moment never really came. People are just overreacting lmao
@@boxcutter4 A whole lot of incels who apparently hate her because she cheated on Walt. Drug manufacturing and dealing and all the violent crime that goes along with it is apparently fine, cool and badass even. But when they see a wahman cheating on her drug dealer husband, their moral failing detectors go wild and they start screeching.
didn't know how much hatred there was for her til after I finished the series and I honestly still don't understand how anyone got that from the show. They don't like the way she behaves but honestly, I thought every action was absolutely perfect for what she was going through. Plus Anna Gunn is amazing
Anna Gunn was one of the best actors on the show, which is saying a lot. She isn't charasmatic and she is pretty loud so that is why I think she gets the hate? People idolize characters like gus and mike and then hate on Skyler, makes no sense to me. She suffered a lot throughout the show and did everything she could to keep her family safe. Great character, great actress.
The part that turns me off of her a bit is in this scene you can see the moment at which Skyler chooses to not turn on Walter. It's when she learns he's dying and soon will he out of her life. Later in the bathroom she encourages Walter to not turn himself in and to stay quiet so Hank has to try and prove it. In this moment Skyler is being very selfish. It's understandable as self preservation given she got dragged into all of this by fairly justifiable circumstances, but in making this decision she is denying justice to every other person Walter has ever (or will ever, in those last few episodes) bring harm to. She's just not a very moral person at her core, just like Walt (but not as bad.) Her owm and her family's needs come above everything else, even if it means helping Walter get away with it.
Skyler has been in there already, with Walt telling to not go the police "we dont need them" "i doing this for the family" and Hank...he just expose itself "You don't need a lawyer" "i doing this for your sister" this just is perfect, Skyler is not going to be manipulated again
You can notice that skyler would've said something but as soon as she heard that walt's cancer is back and that he said that "he would never see the inside of a jail cell", she changed her mind because she knows what walt is capable of, and that was really brilliant from the writers.
@@randombutspecificMorality is grey and personal and subjective throughout this whole show; maybe to her that's what the right thing to do is, just wait it out
Rightly so Hank was obsessed with catching Walt. Imagine you find out your brother in law is the meth kingpin you've been spending the last year and a half trying to catch and now you feel betrayed because he was family and you loved him and he was doing evil shit right under your nose.
I think part of the problem, is Hank had difficulty differentiating family and police work. His police work consumed him. His health and well being actually declined after his injuries when he was on medical leave because his police work was his identity. most people when they realize their family member is a criminal try to first help that family member first, Hank showed no interest in putting Walt back on the righteous path, and that scared Skyler to death.
*Hank:* You don't need a lawyer, Skyler *Saul:* Eh, what are you doing talking to my client detective? You Sneaky Pete. Did the Academy hire you right out of the womb? You guys get younger every year. (to Skyler): What'd you say to baby face over here? Anything stupid? When I mean stupid, I mean anything at all. (to Hank): You out! 10 minutes ago. Go on detective. There are rules. Have your Kindergarten Teacher read them to you. That's right. Go have a nap, go get a Juice Box whilst you're at it.
Skyler was extremely smart, and very good at sensing and playing on the emotions of others. The fact that she managed to survive being married to Walt is a huge accomplishment.
@@YourCreepyUncle. I don't know about that. Skyler, at various points in the series, outmaneuvers Bogdan, Ted, the IRS, Walt, and Hank, and in the end it's suggested that she's going to be able to make a deal with the prosecution despite being an active accomplice in Walt's business. I think that goes beyond moderately creative.
This is one of the reasons I love this show. It's about as grounded in reality as a scripted show can get. Although we know the, guilt or innocence of the characters, she absolutely did the right thing in lawyering up
This is a great scene! I think one of the things that make BB so good is that each character is intelligent but has flaws and diverse interests. Skylar acted exactly as I would - get legal counsel. Hank shows his dark side here. If he REALLY cared about Skylar, he would ENCOURAGE her to get a lawyer. His own wife is a kleptomaniac, so he should know that everyone has done questionable things, and (good) lawyers keep irrelevant transgressions from being used against their clients. What are the chances that HANK has never done anything unethical (or worse)?
Imagine being one of the diners and thinking "Damn, who was that crazy lady screaming?" and then like a year later you realize you just witnessed the beginning of Heisenberg's downfall.
To be fair to Skyler, she actually did a smart thing here. Hank's position in the DEA wouldn't necessarily save her from horrible consequences with the law. So no matter how much Hank reassured her, she did the right thing to not speak without a lawyer
yep, and everything she gives up means she can't plea, and if she doesn't get a lawyer to help her get a pardon in return for information she just goes down with walt. don't talk to the cops, folks, it doesn't work how it does in the movies, except this one, this one's pretty good.
Cool scene. Hank, despite caring deeply for Skylar, gives her terrible advice to "come clean" and implicate herself just so that he can reassert control.
0:22 “i think maybe, I’d look guilty if I got a lawyer.” “Well actually, it’s getting arrested that makes people look guilty, and innocent people get arrested every day. And they find themselves in little room, with a detective, who tells them that he’s their best friend. ‘Talk to me. Let me clear this thing up! You don’t need a lawyer only guilty people need lawyers!’. And then boom! “
Nah its because Hank thought she was pretty much innocent or being used by walt so she would be happy to confess. He wasn't trying to get her to incriminate herself
No one on this show is perfect, it’s great. Hank is on such a war path that he doesn’t care if Skyler gets burned, their family ruined, her kids left without both their parents, etc. He just wants Walt because it’s personal for him. He has alluded him and played him for a fool across this whole show and it bruises Hank’s ego so hard.
I used to hate Skyler, but after all these years I get her perspective. She just acted the best she could in a hostile environment Walt put her in, she was just human trying to do what was best for herself and her family
While Hank was the good guy for a lot of the series, this was kind of a scummy move by him, particularly towards his own sister in law. Of course she should have a lawyer.
Hank was never the good guy for a single second in the show. I really wonder if some of you were half asleep while watching? @@DonDadda45 What about the second in which 2 cartel goons were trying to murder him? Was he a good guy for that second? If it's legal, get a lawyer. No two ways about it.

Two sentences that would shut down any police officer:

If Hank had taken some time to collect himself and approach the conversation from a different angle, this would’ve worked out much better for him. It’s entirely his fault that she didn’t talk- he came at her not as family but as a cop
Lauren it’s her fault for no talking, she knows she will be in prison if she talks so that’s why she play a “victim” when she is no way near a victim

Hank was kind of on the clock. He had to talk to Skylar before Walt did so he didn't have time to gather his composure.
Exactly, started talking only as an arrest happy cop instead a caring Brother looking out for his Sister.
They did an incredible job of making Hank look like someone who'd be going through this. His character looked different for these couple of episodes.
Especially in the garage scene
Because he has been lied to all these years and Skylar knew everything Walt was doing. So in some way she was still loyal to him.
Bravo! Hank would be in serious trouble for not telling his superiors what was going on. Way too personally involved.

Hank went Captain Ahab over Walt and just like Ahab his obsession got him killed.

I think that goes beyond moderately creative.
@@fencius She is also smart enough to ALWAYS see through Walt's BS whenever he trord to manipulate her, which most other characters never did

To be fair to Skyler, she actually did a smart thing here. Hank's position in the DEA wouldn't necessarily save her from horrible consequences with the law. So no matter how much Hank reassured her, she did the right thing to not speak without a lawyer
