Think what makes the Sheffield rivalry special is that neither Sheffield team can seem to dominate the city for too long....keeps going back and forth, back and forth. Wednesday edging almost every big club stat (so they are technically the bigger club) but it's remarkably close. Even the numbers of seasons each club has spent in each division is almost identical. Sheff Utd are currently top dogs in the city but Sheff Wed are waiting to reclaim the title. One thing I will say though....Sheff Utd must be the most long suffering fans in the UK. There's no other club in Europe with 26K to 30K every week that has never experienced a single cup final since the war or played a single match in Europe. That's true loyal support.

I love the Steel city derby as a Wednesday fan. It's not violent, it's not aggressive. It's just passion. You can hate each other for 90 minutes then go to the pub together after and laugh about the match. Truly the most underrated derby maybe in the world, but at least in England

The reasons for it where that the then Sheffield rules league was losing clubs to other leagues and they believed creating a rival club would bring in the crowds and some money, also might save the league. I live in Sheffield and find the rivalry annoying. People genuinely believe the opposite supporters are somehow inferior. To take matters further, some people refuse to live in certain areas of the city of refuse to have red or blue colours in their life. Tribalism at its best.
As a neutral, it is obvious that United are well on top at the minute but that pendulum will swing as it always does. Wednesday however have that manky old shed of a ground whereas it seems that United are planning on growing an already fantastic stadium.

But there is another club in Sheffield (also an amateur club) which is older than Wednesday, and in fact is the second oldest football club in the world - and that is Hallam FC, who incidentally play at the oldest football ground in the world. Sheffield FC v Hallam FC is the oldest Sheffield derby match, some years before Wednesday were formed. And Wednesday might like to 'claim' they're the biggest club in the city (biggest bunch of arseholes maybe), but the records show that in head to head derby games United have won more. And that's been the case for at least the last two or three decades.

I don't know where you got your history of how both clubs came about but other than Wednesday starting from cricket club it's a million miles off. Wednesday cc played at bramhall ln football club did too, also Wednesday were originally nicknamed blades, because of rent Wednesday moved to olive grove and then chairman created another club to fill void at lane, Wednesday were then given land at owlerton moved stands from olive grove there and were nicknamed the owls.

It was only a few months ago that an article in a national newspaper described Wednesday with the headline thus: 'a weaselly club devoid of any humility'. Referencing Newcastle United fans experiences in the Leppings Lane end, and the apparent lack of any changes following the Swillsboro disaster.

I live in Sheffield and find the rivalry annoying. People genuinely believe the opposite supporters are somehow inferior. To take matters further, some people refuse to live in certain areas of the city of refuse to have red or blue colours in their life. Tribalism at its best.

As a neutral, it is obvious that United are well on top at the minute but that pendulum will swing as it always does. Wednesday however have that manky old shed of a ground whereas it seems that United are planning on growing an already fantastic stadium.
This is a proper english rivalry better than the manc rivalry for me easily in the top 5 in britain for derby games.
We are not nicknamed the owls because we played at owlerton stadium we were gifted an owl as a mascot and that's where we get our nickname from but I know alot people think it's because we played at owlerton

But there is another club in Sheffield (also an amateur club) which is older than Wednesday, and in fact is the second oldest football club in the world - and that is Hallam FC, who incidentally play at the oldest football ground in the world. Sheffield FC v Hallam FC is the oldest Sheffield derby match, some years before Wednesday were formed. And Wednesday might like to 'claim' they're the biggest club in the city (biggest bunch of arseholes maybe), but the records show that in head to head derby games United have won more. And that's been the case for at least the last two or three decades.
