Why Nikhil Kamath Dropped Out of High School to Join a Call Centre

  • Nikhil Kamath, one of the co-founders of Zerodha, started his first business at the age of 14. He and his friend Tejpal bought and sold used phones, but when his mom found out about this little hustle, she flushed them down the toilet, in an effort to force him to re-focus his attention on his studies. Her efforts were in vain though - Nikhil Kamath ended up dropping out of high school to make money. He joined a call center at the age of 17 using a fake birth certificate, and started earning 8,000 rupees per month, some of which he began to invest in penny stocks. And he was good at it! By the age of 18, he was known in his family as a stock trader, and so his dad, believing in his son’s abilities, gave him some of his savings, and told him to manage it. Then his manager at the call centre did the same. Soon enough Nikhil Kamath was managing the wealth of his entire team, and this experience prepared him for what he would end up building later in life with Zerodha. Using the skills that he learned from managing other people's money, he would co-found Zerodha with his brother Nithin Kamath in 2010.
In 2022, Nikhil Kamath participated in a charity chess match against five-time world chess champion, Viswanathan Anand. To many people's surprise, he won the match. However, Nikhil Kamath later admitted to defeating the chess champion using unfair means and apologized for it. While some have called this an act of cheating at the game of chess, others understand that the game of chess was not a serious one, and that both Nikhil Kamath and Viswanathan Anand agreed in advance to throw the game. In other words, some people believe it shouldn't be considered cheating, while others do believe that Nikhil Kamath was cheating at chess.

Education is very very importnat, I can say this a million more times if I needed to. Its very uncommon for anyone to achieve big if you lack basic primary education. In such rare instances such as Nikhil's, its worked out innhis favor. Dream big, strive to fulfill your dreams, but dont neglect your education - dreams and education are not codependent, you can have both as both are equally important .
