    Used to work at a gaming store years ago, late 90's early 2000's. Opening some boxes of a few sets for the binders one day, I discovered that for certain sets, the packs containing foils were distributed through each box in a systematic way. Literally, once you opened enough packs in a box to find the first foil, you could pick out every other foil pack in the box and leave all the non-foil packs. Wizards eventually realized this was a horrible fucking method of distributing foils through the boxes and improved their randomization methods, but people should be aware and use caution when buying individual packs or partial boxes from this time period. I'm sure I wasn't the only person to notice this, and unscrupulous vendors most certainly took advantage of this. This pertains to all games Wizards was inserting foils into at this time (i.e. Pokemon).

      It was just a terrible choice to begin with. If there are physical differences in cards, people will find a method for their own personal gain.

    Rudy: *drops the box, Shakes the packs, scuffs the cards on each other repeatedly, punts each individual card into next week just to check their durability.*
    Also Rudy: Aweee, we got a little nick on our Grim Monolith!

    Magic history lesson! The term "rock" describing G/B based midrange decks originated from a popular standard deck based on two rares we opened - Phyrexian Plaguelord and Deranged Hermit. The full name of the deck came from the wrestling tagline "The Rock [Phyrexian Plaguelord] and his Millions [squirrels]".

    This is pretty nostalgic for me. I've only opened two MTG booster boxes and it was 2 of Urza's Legacy. I ended up with the best 4 non foil rares from this set and a foil Weatherseed Treefolk. I hopped on that initial foil craze back in the day. I didn't get too many foils from those boxes. 2 rare foils and couple of common/uncommon foils iirc.

    I have about 500 UL and UD foils and if you don't put them in a binder that lays flat, they will bow in the center. I have some I picked up as I was getting out of tourney that I put in an old sleeve box and they are all curled. The foils were crazy rare back in the day and looked much better than todays foils for sure...

  • @cavemantero
    @cavemantero 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually know how these double rares happen Rudy. I used to work at a packaging warehouse that did do MTG packs and products. While I didn't work there when they were doing the cards, whenever they had an assembly line they would typically have two lines
    on each side of a conveyor rack with one box at the end. Basically, because of these it makes it possible to get two lots of packages that share the same box.

  • @bartenderbobmtg9809

    I used to really hate when I'd buy 2 boxes of anything from 4th edition, chronicles, homelands, Ice Age, Fallen Empires, etc and i would literally get the same box, same rares same nonsense. I wouldn't even get a complete set of the commons. That's how bad they were. I would never pay over 500 for an old box, just because of the lack of randomization

  • @txdust80
    @txdust80 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Normal, my uncle was a single fire fighter and into Magic in the 90s with me. As I would buy booster packs he would buy boxes. I remember him wanting a Jester Cap with iceage, it had just come out, so he bought 2 boxes of ice age. That was a small set but the first box didn't have a single one. The second box had 3. The mix was completely random. He would buy cases at a time every set often he would be missing a card he was looking for, and than the box he did get it in had several. It is probably like when you play solitaire or uno, or any game in which you gather cards of a type together. You can shuffle them a few times and still see large clumps of those groups together. Unless they had a system to battle that in the print stage they may not of mixed the cuts enough to prevent this, and certain rarer to find rares would actually be pretty common depending on the box. That is just my hypothesis with only personal history of viewing early box openings.

    • @adolphus28
      @adolphus28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You and your uncle still have the cards?

  • @ukguybrush
    @ukguybrush 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Foil ratios were 1 per 100 cards. Foils took the same slot as the rarity card the foil was, and it was in the same place in the pack. Also you could get multiple foils per pack; one per rarity slot, so maximum 3 in a pack.

    • @adolphus28
      @adolphus28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, up to 3 foils in one pack!

    In retrospect, getting multiple rares for Urza's Legacy makes total sense. 143 cards total, 44 rares. If this was happening this often in the block's core set, Urza's Saga, that would be much more befuddling. But yeah, cracking this block open is usually just bad news baseball. At least it WASN'T Urza's Saga, because the pack prices double.
    But cracking open a case of the second or third in a set and getting piles of multiples, unfortunate but common. Also why they generally demand lower prices on the aftermarket, unless they were broken, but nothing comes to mind.

    I could cry because this is my childhood when and since then the Urza block is to me the most important piece of storyline in Magic and also one of the greatest universes in fantasy overall.
    The brothers war, the phyrexian war, the steampunk-fantasy mixture. This was tinkering and engineering with Mana when it was still awesome.

    I opened around 50-60 Urza's Legacy boxes back in the day. Duplicate rares within a box were a common theme, annoying unless you hit on 2-4 good rares. I think you could map foils in Legacy, but it's been so long I may be mistaken.

    I remember the day after Legacy came out. It was my first tournament at my LGS (was in high school at the time). I was just starting to play a bit more... competitive rather than the "Look. I put 60 cards together!). And I showed up for an extended tournament (not sure what this is equivalent to now. It had revised but did not have alpha/beta/unlimited/legends, etc so there was dual lands but no power). Turn 1 in my first match in my first tournament... I played against a Memory Jar deck. Keep in mind that I was new to playing organized play. I had some Overrun elf deck. And game 1 he went off on me and I died turn 2. And then he stalled the next 2 games and I beat him (karma!)
    Anyway the end of the tournament, prize support was a box of Legacy. And the winner got a foil Grim Monolith. And I remember my jaw dropping at the idea of opening a $40 card from a new pack. And now Rudy says $1000? I hope he forgot about and it is still in good shape in his house. Hope he finds that card and has a nice windfall!

    Sets like this were so fun to play, the artwork and the card frames were so cool.

    Yay. Old videos. Personally, I enjoyed the Urza's block. It was also my first tournament.

    The damaged first monolith is such a bummer. Rudy knows better, but tries to breeze right by it.

      I'm not sure he actually knows better. He always opens the packs roughly. Maybe he's so used to doing mass openings of $100 boxes that he doesn't think to be more gentle with the expensive packs.

    I don’t buy many packs, usually singles, but Innistrad was crazy good luck for me. I opened maybe ~12 or so packs total and got a Snappy and a Lily. Never been so lucky again.

    I remeber Legacy's release. I bought about 3 boxes worth of cards by trading in random foils. I was getting about 40$ for a foil Multani.... life was good.

    ANY foil was worth bank, specially the lands, but people even geeked about common foils back then.

    Watching Rudy open packs as I smoke some ribs. Drinking Bishop cider and fireball. Gotta stay warm somehow.

    That is the single best artwork of 2017. Please post it on twitter so I can copy it and dissemenate all over the place.

    Rare duplication was rampant in small sets back then. If you saw someone pull a desired rare the rest of that box would sell super quick back in the day.

    Treetop village and Faerie Conclave were staple cards for me back in the day.

    If he's opening these boxes for other people, why is he using bare hands, messing with corners etc... It just doesn't seem.... right.

    What's the fair market (ebay) value of all of the cards that were opened? Anyone? Cause a new Legacy box goes for between $800-$1200.
