As a yoga teacher I would like to argue the case of choosing not to do yoga and be present with your family is actually also yoga. Yoga is much more then the physical practice. Of course it's what everyone thinks of when they think of yoga. But it's a full soul practice of mindfulness. Being able to tune into your needs is not cheesy!

      @orirune3079 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I get what you're trying to say but the pedantic asshole in me is yelling that _not doing yoga_ is *not* yoga just by definition

    • @UruzRhode
      @UruzRhode หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@orirune3079 i also understand were youre coming from here..i do often kick myself for not doing my own stuff instead of just teaching. If you're intrested, I would urge you to look into the 8 limbs of yoga. 😊 asana( the postures) is just one aspect. It's also of course not the end all be all of it of practice and there is nothing wrong with just doing the asana, it's great to be able to identify what your body is doing and potentially where you're feeling sensation. 😅 I didn't mean to spew stuff.

      @@orirune3079well, here’s where you’re wrong.
Yoga is foremost a philosophy, a meditation, that pre-dates the calisthenics elements of the practice. Asanas, or yoga poses, are a medium of meditation; they are tools to bring your mind inward and to release thoughts, centering you in the present.
So, yes, ‘doing yoga’ doesn’t mean nailing a pose. You can ‘do yoga’ without being on the mat.

I got into yoga many years ago. To deepen my practice, I decided to do my 200 hour teacher training, followed by the 300 hours to complete the full 500 hours. The knowledge is so invaluable. The benefits of yoga are truly incredible. It is now part of my daily routine, and more a lifestyle. I love having a balance, and I can definitely say that my cardio, weightlifting and overall health has improved because of it.

I got into yoga during eating disorder recovery and something very powerful has stuck with me from some amazing teachers - yoga is not about progressing towards any certain ability. Rather, it is an opportunity each day to strip away expectations of what “should” be and to simply exist in the moment and observe how your body feels in the present. This was a total philosophy shift from my time as an athlete and I started to really tune into how my body felt without the pressure for it to do something “better” than the day before. Focusing on the present also really helped me become mindful of my own anxious negative self talk, like you mentioned!

My favorite saying in yoga is “if you’re present with breath, you’re doing yoga” The physical practice is great. The spiritual practice was showing up for you in your willingness to be present with your family. Loved this

Keltie! My favourite way to incorporate yoga into my life is the candlelight Yin classes that several studios do , usually at like 8pm. It gets me so zenned out and ready for bed which is a plus. Of course other types of stretching are better in general than static yoga poses but for glutes and hamstrings those larger muscle groups need longer to release and the 5 min holds in Yin are unparalleled for loosening the lower back and hips etc. I like the nighttime classes because they are great for the mental, it's the end of the day when my brain is actually down for silence and stillness, and it doesn't interfere with the rest of my schedule so I don't feel like I have to choose yoga over something else more strength focused. Maybe this would work for you. Honestly even doing a class 1 or 2x per week has an effect like microdosing psychedelics, it just puts me in a good headspace that lasts for a few days after.

Keltie- have you looked into phases of your cycle and different types of working out and nutrition? I feel like there’s a lot of wishy washy science about it and apps like 28 which prescribed things you should do to connect with your body/hormones and I would LOVE a Keltie video on something like that. (It’s definitely 30day challenge material ;) )

    • @chockid

there's wishy-washy science about it, but you can always experiment with yourself and see if your cycle affects your body during certain phases. Recording your own data about yourself could be insightful for you - and if it isn't, then maybe your cycle doesn't affect you that way, also a good to know!

I don’t think a 30 day challenge would be enough for this topic. Cycle synching honestly changed my life, but I didn’t see the effects about six months into it. 30 days is not enough enough to change your hormones and stabilise them. Most people say that 100 days is when you see the changes but for me it was way longer but it was worth it.

The first memories I have of yoga was watching some program on public TV with my dad. It was some crazy advanced woman doing these poses on some rock by the ocean. I was never really coordinated to I would 'try' them but fall over laughing. When I went to college, we were require to take a class in another major. It was an art school so on a whim I signed up for a yoga class over the summer (I was in a photo major and this fell under dance). Best decision I could have made. My teacher was fantastic and introduced us to a few types but the most important thing I remember is: Your yoga practice belongs to only you. The person next to you may be able to have the more 'ideal' asana but the one you're able to do that day is just as perfect. It's about listening to your body on that day and in that moment. It's a lesson I forget sometimes but find it so important to not only working out/being active, but also for just living. Over the years I fall in and out of practice. One of my favorite types I've found is Ashtanga (I think it's sometimes called Power Yoga?). It's always the same sequences but every practice is still its own. And also, Adrienne and her channel are pretty damn awesome. She's def one of my favs, great for someone just starting or looking to start again.

As someone who is doing yoga for some time (but not everyday), can say that yoga is not about nailing a pose or doing splits, it’s a process of learning how to be in the present moment and fully enjoying the feeling.
I also got into yoga because I wanted to do splits, still cannot do them but now I learned that it’s not that simple, just do stretches everyday and you will do splits. So I stopped putting pressure of doing and started to actually enjoying yoga.
Did hot yoga, and it’s so amazing to know what your body is capable of especially when you let go of expectations and just enjoy the process of doing it.
    Love from Toronto ❤

I reallllllly appreciate you and your content. There are so many creaters that I follow that show how they live their life in this perfect way..get up at 5am, grind, eat these perfect esthetic meals etc. And i'm sure it's not always like that when the camera is off. But videos like yours are so relatable and make me feel like im exactly where I need to be in life. We are all just figuring it out, and it's not always esthetic or perfect, but you choose to put that out for the world to see and I think it's admirable. Thank you❤

Hi Keltie - something to consider when you’re avoiding yoga because you don’t want to be sitting in your head…stay focused on your form (ex: is every body part from my head to my toes in the right position? Do I have the right push/pull tension in my muscles for this asana stance? etc.) and of course check in to make sure you’re breathing. It becomes meditative. You probably do this somewhat naturally as an athlete (ex: when playing basketball you’re aware of where the ball is and where everyone on the court is, how they’re moving and what they may do next) you’ll just need to bring it inward and focus on what your own body is doing. I didn’t realize how important this was from a mental health perspective until I picked up yoga after quitting dancing for several years. It reminded me that my mental state was much better when I was dancing because not only was I getting a serious workout but I had to focus so much on where my body was positioned that I was able to get out of my head. It’s even more so with yoga because many studios don’t have mirrors and they dim the lights so you can’t critique yourself in the mirror 😊. Keep doing what you’re doing, love your channel and the fabulous content. Also, thanks for keeping it informative and entertaining and not just a vehicle for you to sell us a bunch of crap. Occasional sponsors are understandable (I’m an LMNT fan too), you need to make money to keep this going and you should. But I love that you don’t make content just to fit around something you want to sell us like many of the super-consumer influencers do. Thanks again!!

How the longer you do yoga the more you grasp with the spiritual way of it - yoga is a way of life.
And you are so right, we should all spend more time with the people we love than with work and we should stop hurrying and slow down and go where it's uncomfortable to be slow and mindful!

My own practices have become so much more consistent since I let go of the idea of “needing “ to have my yoga practice and my meditation habits in the same formats that they were initially brought into my life. My overall approach is to bring mindfulness and a sense of physical ease into every moment. I do that mostly by returning my focus to my breath and body sensations whenever I realize that my thoughts have been spinning on the hamster wheel in my brain. Nose breathing is a big part of it for me. I sleep so much better now! In terms of deciding what yoga poses to add to my day I find it’s better to keep it REALLY simple. Whatever poses I choose, I pick one from each direction and plane. Forward, back, side to side. Standing, sitting, cross legged, straight legged, prone, supine, etc. Nothing fancy or fast or showy. Being there with my breath and body as I move through or hold a pose. Yoga in bed is also a thing. So do I have formal practices? Maybe not in a traditional way, but I am living with these habits of thought and mind as consistently as I can, and that’s just fine. I’m in recovery from a lifetime of depression and anxiety and continue to be amazed every day. Feels like the right path to be walking, so I’m sticking with it. I do kinda wonder if the me of three decades ago would recognize themselves in me? I feel just like my self, just calmer and less reactive, hopefully less harsh with myself. Fall away from the habits? Just begin again, one more time.

I love your videos so much!
I’m certainly not in a high stress environment where I’m expected to be anything at all but I do run my own business (dog hotel) and have a dog and cat rescue centre. And 2 homeschooled sons. So it’s not like I’m not busy.
But. Although I’m super strong because of my active lifestyle, I’m always in pain and super tense (also because of the responsibility of caring for so many animals).
I keep trying yoga because I need so much to release the tension and become more flexible but I know how painful it is and how I won’t be able to to the poses properly and how long the road is ahead and I feel so defeated before I start that I just keep putting it off.
Watching this incredibly real video was exactly what I needed to allow the imperfection, the struggle and most importantly the self care even on days when 0% of me wants it!!
    😂
A heartfelt thank you from Portugal.

I started doing Yoga in the pandemic, and I'm certainly no master of it, but my mindset around it has changed a lot. Like you, I would also go into hard, grinding 30 day challenges thinking it would be a total physical transformation. But really yoga is a long journey and it is very much a mental one. My husband was the one that got through to me when he said "if you skip a day you didn't really *fail* anything, you put those parameters on yourself. But don't give up just because you missed one day."

On the topic of yoga, i incorporate it on days off more yin style to help me with recovery, usually lands one strength session, next day cardio and after that yoga. One day i will be at a point where i might do yoga daily but currently just happy when i get any movement in at all in a day 😅

I loved video! You did a great job, even though you missed two days. And the change in your approach and attitude was very interesting and refreshing to follow.
A tip I have for if you still want to try the headstand: your hands and head and shoulders were in the right place, but you were trying to jump your legs up. How I’ve learned it, you slowly start walking your legs towards your head which gets your shoulders into place and anchored, and at one point your hips will automatically start moving your legs up, like an automatic hinging effect. You can keep them above you and close to the rest of your body at first and get comfortable with the weight on your forearms. As soon as you feel comfortable you can try stretching one leg first, and then let the second one join to get into a full headstand.
I haven’t done yoga in a while because I’ve been focusing on running and strength training, but I’m still able to do a headstand because I understand the pose (it’s a fun party trick). I hope this helps! Good luck and I hope you have a great day 🙏🏽🌱

In college I went to a restorative yoga class every week and a lot of weeks I didn’t want to go. I had so much on my mind with classes it was hard to force myself to go. Every time I went I always felt so much clearer and more ready to get back to studying.

It kills me to see you doing yoga with socks and shoes on lol. I've been practicing yoga for a little over 10 years, and it's the corner stone of my cross-training.
More importantly, it's going to help me avoid all kinds of unnecessary ambulatory and health problems later in life.

Pet a dog, pet a cat, call your mom, love your family and friends. Social media has ruined so much for a lot of people. If anything, yoga takes my mind out of the sm stress. It brings me back down to earth. Now, I do have to say, doing yoga, does involve my pets. Its a two in one kinda thing 😍

I think Yoga is about being more appreciative not just of our bodies and minds but all the other great stuff we have, for example family and friends. I also believe that spending more time with them and not doing asanas on those two days was the wiser and more yogic choice. I suppose that most people enjoy yoga so much because it promotes the opposite of all that we have been taught about hustling and working harder and allows us to find balance. 😊

Hi Keltie, I encourage you to work on foundations first before attempting more difficult poses. If your alignment isn't correct, you could injure yourself 🥺. In mermaid for example, your front foot should be flexed to protect your knee. Going a step back is often difficult for our egos, especially when wanting to reach a certain level for a youtube video, but it is a lot more satisfying to start out with modifications where you can get into the pose correctly and hold it, than "failing" at the real pose. Loved that you didn't push too hard and took a few days off to be present with your family 💝.

I recently tried mouth tape because I keep having extremely dry mouth when I wake up. It’s only been 1 week and one night I missed. I have to say, the quality of sleep I’ve had aside from the missed night has definitely felt more energizing and healing to my body 💖 I have also realized that while awake I’m thankfully a natural nose breather 👍🏼 I don’t know if I’ll need it forever but for now it’s life changing

Have you ever tried to "floss the sciatic nerve" before a yoga practice?
I need to get back into yoga too, one of my struggles is always tightnes in the back of the thighs/legs (also a runner). Not to long ago I learned that part of my problem is actually likely the sciatic nerve that is not used to movemend and not just tightness in the muscles.
A way to distinguish between both is if you stretch you leg to the front while your upper body is a bit slouched and your head down and it gets worse if you move your head up and straighten your shoulders, then it's the nerve because the leg muscles and tendons did not move, only the nerve does. I tried that and it's true for me. My very short "flossing" experiment did do something but I didn't follow through with that.

As a yoga teacher I loved this video! 🤍
I played tennis competitively and danced ballet. I completely lost the connection to my body, pushing it too hard to be more flexible, faster and stronger all the time. Yoga helped me rebuild that connection and taught me to listen to my body. Yoga is so much more than just the poses and I see the realization you had as a very yogi one 😊

That is a blessing ❤

I got into yoga in my late 20’s. I’m not in my 40’s. I also got my 500 teaching training, but I have never teach a class apart from friends and family.
I love yoga and I mostly use it as a meditation practice and stretching after lifting weights and after rock climbing. The only thing I don’t like about yoga is how some people take is to serious like (culty) that’s something I always run away from.

Building a routine around woman's cycle is truly something I'm interested in. I have pretty bad pms and all my energy and motivation is sucked out of my body. So now when I've been trying to be more active, going to gym and different classes, I'm wondering what would be the best routine for each phase but to also see results (fat loss, muscle build, flexibility, vo2 max build etc) when I'm not that capable in luteal phase and during period.

The grind is ridiculous. When I was in my 20s, the was pressure to have my whole life mapped out. Throw off these chains as life being lived like that is horrible. You can have a vision or road map, but not allowing yourself to enjoy life is a great sadness. No wonder people are lonely, depressed, and seeking alter realities. Live the life you want as long as you aren't hurting anyone.

Yoga also brought mindfulness to me, it naturally made me prioritize the same things. Down time, family, disconnecting from hustle culture even if it means going against the grain and making choices other people don’t approve of. Loved hearing you process your experiences around how yoga challenged you perspectives. I hope you continue to carry that gentle curiosity towards your internal world and use it to cultivate kindness within and for yourself- its making waves in the world already 🩵
