John Redwood, we have ALWAYS had control of our borders. the EU Freedom of Movement right did not come without conditions and those coming to the UK had to maintain themselves financially, either by working or from private means. Every single EU citizen from abroad that I came across worked incredibly hard here and paid their taxes here. That includes the Romanian couple who worked as carers at my cousin's care home, the Polish postman who delivers our mail, the nurses and doctors who cared for my late father in his last few weeks, and many hundreds of others who I worked with or taught in college. It was never the intention they would become a burden on the state. The UK government have always had the right to eject those from the EU and elsewhere who could not meet those requirements. But they failed to act on that condition. I am sick and tired of listening to bigoted Brexiter distortions.
Nearly true with the exception of the UK government having the ability in theory rather than in practice as you stated. In reality the cost of trying to remove those not working or seeking to claim benefits was impossible due to human rights legislation and so the Government of both persuasion never pursued it. Like everything, it is rarely as a black and white as either side of the debate would have us believe. And the full term is Freedom of movement of Labour, not freedom of movement, subtle but often abused.
There was absolutely no control on the numbers coming from the EU, while Britain was a member of the EU. Free movement of labour was a fact, I don’t see why people are trying to deny this fact. There was a provision for removing people who hadn’t found work after 90 days, but this was nothing more than a provision for deporting a handful of vagrants, it wouldn’t have affected the numbers of people coming to work at all.

@@davidpryle3935 So what is the actual outcome? We currently have double the number of immigrants every year, only they are from outside the EU - hooray! Is that what people understand as "taking back control"?
PS: This is coming from someone who has no problems with immigration, just with scheming, lying politicians who manipulate the public.
The UK was able to send boat refugees back to France whilst they were in the EU. That’s over now they’ve decided to leave.
i think the key lesson political parties learned over brexit and boris is that you can get away with much more lies and bigger lies than previously expected, ... they seen the limit now, so expect them use this new validated scale of accepted lies.

The EU is built largely on ignoring referendums. Get some context. Fear is not a sustainable basis for a relationship.
48% of the people that voted in 2016 voted to remain, just remember that. It is because of our shockingly undemocratic election system that the hardest possible brexit was enacted on the country by ideologues and cynical opportunists.

We had plenty of skilled manual, reasonable or well paying jobs when we were an industrialised country. Thatcher made a conscious decision to end that, rather than modernising it. Those who would have been well paid miners, steel workers, manufacturing workers are now limited to retail or distribution.
people arriving at UK shores by rubber boat and UK cannot control it so what does it mean take back control of borders and immigration?. Most of goods on trucks arriving at UK ports are not checked due to lack of staff and administration and fear of creating long queues. And workers won't come to UK if they require visa and passport while in the whole EU they can travel without it and only with an ID card.
Big business wanted brexit so they can bring in cheaper labour from outside the eu.
Business complain they can’t get labour, their friends in government wave cheap labour through. I said it 6 years ago. Their is even a video of a director saying exactly this.
Big business wanted remain as an open border is a capitalists wet dream. I don't know where you live but it is evident that the UK has had immigration from outside the UK for decades!
You are actually inverting the truth. Big business didn’t want Brexit at all. The big banks, big corporations, big employers, the CBI, all campaigned strongly for Remain, so there would be no interruption to the supply of cheap labour from the EU. It is in the gift of the elected government to stop immigration from outside the EU. They could not stop immigration from the EU, while Britain was a member of the EU.
I concede, this is true for most businesses.
I did literally watch an owner of a big business on tv saying he wanted to access cheaper labour from outside the eu.
I see 2 types of cheap labour. What some say is low skilled cheap labour (inside eu) and middle income cheap labour (outside eu). This latter one is when industries (like oil) suppress wages then lobby government saying they simply can’t find any engineers who want to work at half the going rate (go-figure). Hey presto engineers from outside the eu.
Who is hiring experienced engineers into the UK at half the rate? Sounds a bit illegal. Work going global to cheaper Indian offices for example is definitely a thing but is not controlled by brexit
Anand Menon is articulate but disingenuous. I have heard him a few times and his modus operandi seems to be: portray Brexit as a rational choice with lots of opportunities, when it went wrong he analyzes it by detaching himself from it (though he seems pro-Brexit). He never admits that Brexit was unsuccessful and that is true by any objective measure. His mention that the Brexit campaign never mentioned reduced immigration is misleading (if not downright false). Also his explaining away the increased immigration does not cite any useful figures. But, he seems very convincing when he talks.
Being open about one’s xenophobia is certainly a very peculiar kind of openness.

1) It is undemocratic ie commissioners are appointed as opposed to being democratically elected
2) It is becoming more authoritarian and right wing.
3) It has no energy, ie no way to produce enough electricity because it has old and inefficient power plants, German has opened lignite plants plants as it will be desperate this winter. France used to get uranium from Niger but it is unlikely it will be able to source it from there anymore (DYOR)
4) Germany is in recession
The EU could have been good if it was run well, I was very enthusiastic about it at the beginning but it has changed from the original idea to something I don't like.
Nonsense, if you're a low-paid worker you pay very little tax at all. But unfortunately don't earn enough for the high costs to live in this country either.
If people from EU can't profit from moving to UK they would stop coming. But you'd have no workers, or you will,India and Bangladesh are very populated countries.

Frenchman from dunkirk here : what migrants tell us here is that they cannot be deported to Continental Europe under the Dublin agreement, which makes the UK much more attractive than before Brexit.

I mean, yeah, it's to be expected. Older people tend to be more racist and xenophobic and directly benefit less from the free movement and labor that the EU offered compared to younger people, and not to mention more easily fooled by conservative propaganda. So it's reasonable that Leave voters tend to be older.

People clapping for "in the UK it is not worth it if you are a low skilled worker". Total disillusioned audience here because Habib and his cronies do not have a pay rise in mind for those workers but the audience thinks that is what he is advocating.
The big concern for many people is the secondary effect of immigration which is a population growth that is now starting to impact our standard of living, not financially but socially. Roads, urban areas are getting increasingly congested, green spaces are being taken up for additional housing. At what point do we realise there are too many people in this country and in fact at what point do we realise there are too many people on this planet......
They cull people every decade to keep the population down. WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Aids, Covid and to keep population down.
Whilst part of the EU we had no clue about entry to the UK.
Figures are up because:
1. EU citizens are applying to enter They previously were not tracked.
2. At least 105k Hong Kong BN(O) British Nationals arrived in the first year of the scheme for the protection of BN(O) in 2022. BN(O) stands for BRITISH NATIONAL (OVERSEAS)
3. At least 179k Ukrainian nationals have arrived in 2022-2023 on visas.
4. Along with 26k Ukrainian nationals being given extensions
That is the best part of 300k

One thing remainers need to be honest about is how cheap labour from the EU led to wide spread wage suppression in the private sector, the vast majority of jobs advertised were on the minimum wage,.
This never fed to the vast majority of public sector jobs hence the large scale pro EU sentiments from teachers , lecturers etc.
Many companies actively sought to replace their entire workforce with cheaper European labour , had councils & government departments sought to do this we would of seen a completely different debate around leaving the EU.
The debate about leaving solely revolved around the xenophobic headlines in the guttersnipe British rag press and the three word slogan sound bites of self serving snake oil salesmen Tory politicians. The educated Britons had nothing to do with it. It was the uneducated, easily led and gullible morons who drove the leave vote.
