The answer to the question why do individuals go into politics re the salary is for me quite simple…. It is nothing to do with the 80/150k depending on your position, but consider how much they make or potentially make that has nothing to do with their salary? Obviously the classic example is Rishi Sunak a multi, multi millionaire in his own right and the husband of a billionaire heiress.
1)Answer, they have the power to change/ implement legislation that can give them untold financial gain ( otherwise known as greed)
2)They have a position that can influence new laws and regulations and it’s commonly known, they benefit from 2nd/3rd interests outside of parliamentary duties.
3)They receive all kinds of ‘under the table’ reward/ benefits or opportunities to gain both financially and through gifts (corporate guests at major events)
The list goes on and on….. there are I hope some who are in it for the ‘good of the people’ but I’m finding it harder and harder to find them!

@@thezyg6311 you miss the point. In the countries with good healthcare systems government does not obsessively plan healthcare, rather it leaves it to ppl who know what they are doing with better outcomes. At the same time it prevents profiteering and market failure of the worst kind we see in parts of the US system. I don't see what you have against the superior french, German or Japanese models which clearly work better, where government is essentially subsidising a largely private system at arms length with regulated prices.

UK = 0.87% of the World's population, 6th highest national covid fatality rate.
What else is there to know?
As for Hartley-Brewer's tripe about the NHS . . . . . . Germany has a way more efficient and value for money public health service. Funded by private insurance companies operating as non-profit making businesses in their health insurance departments. One can choose an insurance company relative to job or profession, employer pays a portion and government takes over payment in case of unemployment. Their railway, run under a similar pragmatic approach, has fares a fraction of ours AND invest and make profit from our privatised shambles of a rip off.
