TEDxDelft - Irma Boom - Manifesto for the book

Irma Boom (born 15 December 1960 in Lochem, Gelderland) is an Amsterdam-based graphic designer specialising in book making. With her use of unfamiliar formats, materials, colors, structures, and typography she makes the book into a visual and haptic experience.
Her design for 'Weaving as Metaphor' by American artist Sheila Hicks was awarded 'The Most Beautiful Book in the World' at the Leipzig Book Fair. Her books have been shown at numerous international exhibitions and are also represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
On 7 November 2011 over 900 people gathered in the beautiful city of Delft for the first TEDx event in Delft, the Netherlands: TEDxDelft. We had 20 live speakers on stage talking about a wide range of subjects. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Couldn't have said it better! What I really like about Irma is that she is one of the few designers, who gives me the impression that she had her unique approach and stood by it, even before she got more famous. For exmple: the story she tells about her first book getting harsh criticism but also huge admiration and prizes. I feel that most succesful designers(intenionally not blackening anyone in particular here) are just babbling about "remaining true to oneself" because it sounds profound. But this is just because they are already established and therfore can do whatever they want.
