I remember Raleigh 88 and Raleigh 2011 . North Carolina has the fourth most active tornado alley in the world . I drove through a tornado in PA in 1991. It was quite an experience to say the least . A home and a barn nearby were devastated . The night of March 28 1984 is the most epic tornado event in our state since 1884 . The Red Springs tornado of 1984 reached an incredible width of 2.5 miles in Robeson county . I could hear the roar just below Cedar Creek from my home as a mile wide tornado swept the communities away . We lost 61 lives and over 1248 were injured by a wave of 22 tornadoes . Seven of that swarm were actually F4 strength . Ted Fujita paid an extensive visit to the devastated towns which covered over 300 miles of the Carolinas .
