I think it says a lot that Edith later invited Thomas to her wedding, even though he was no longer working at Downton at the time. She never forgot that she owed her life to him.

The whole point of Downtown Abbey is that these are supposed to be real like real life people. No cartoonishly evil villians incapable of doing anything good. Just because Mary behaves very questionably sometimes doesn't mean she's incapable of love. She loves George, just like she loves Anna, Sybil, Mathew, Tom, Thomas, Carson and many others and does genuinely good things to help them.

Fun fact: I've been to Downton Abbey: The Exhibition, and you can see that photo of Marigold as a baby that Edith's looking at in that scene up close. The fact that Edith had a photo taken of a child she was told she was going to have to give up really tells me that, in a world where there would have been no risk of both Edith and Marigold becoming outcasts on all levels of society, Edith would have kept her and claim her. While I agree with people who say that Edith could have tried to be a bit more sympathetic to the Drewes, it's hard to completely fault a mother who wanted to find a way to stay a part of her child's life in a world where claiming Marigold could ruin both their futures.
Also, Mary's comment about Edith choosing to set her room on fire once again proves that if there was a prize for worst big sister, she would totally win it.

The water would have caused as much damage as the fire, particularly to the ceiling below. The firemen, who were unrealistically prompt arriving, would not have left so quickly. A fire like that can get into the laths behind the plaster and smoulder quietly before developing into a conflagration again. They would have been watching everywhere for signs of smoke and touching the walls for signs of heat for several hours. This was one scene which rather stretched credulity for the sake of a weak plot device.

This happened at my first apartment - the top floor in one of the oldest buildings in town. There was a fire in the basement. I called the fire department at about half past midnight, the firemen said they'd found the source of the fire about half past one and that we should be fine within a few hours, with some smoke damage. At three at night, my living room window blew out because the fire had spread through the walls and the whole building was overignited.

That’s good RL information, but Downton Abbey has to carry on smartly. I’m sorry to see handsome James go; he is easy on the eyes. No wonder his former employer imposed on the Crawleys; she wanted him back. He probably went back with a promotion and better pay, with fringe benefits. I hope he was allowed to get up later after working late at night.

How melodramatic and unrealistic. Everyone had time, in an emergency, to put on their dressing gowns, the buckets of sand and the fire brigade came awfully quick, the entire house had to be evacuated for a small fire in one of many, many rooms, and the furniture of said room just had to be removed to the front lawn! Oh, the drama.

      1. ppl can grab their gowns on the way out and put them on on their way down
      2. buckets are supposed to be within reach, like a fire extinguisher nowadays
      3. fire is very unpredictable and even a relatively small fire can get bigger and do immense damage ( see further Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and London Fire, both were ignored for too long)
      4. that only leaves the fire brigade which was, i agree, way too quick to arrive, but then again films are usually not in real time - time is prolonged or (as it might be done here) accelerated.
