Gwen had determination and talent - but she also had a great deal of good luck, and considerable help from Lady Sybil. There were many others, equally talented, equally determined, who had no such good fortune.
I disagree-you make your own luck.Gwen had light,determination,and was dynamic.She PUSHED the boundries.She shared her dreams with Sybil and thankfully Sybil had the same mind and wanted to transform her life as well as Gwens by helping her!As you walk the way the way appears!Some people have to push and push for their dreams.

I love that Mrs. Hughs insists on a sit down breakfast for her wedding and Lady Mary has a sit down meal at her 2nd wedding later on. It’s nice to see her grow by learning from others besides her own family and Mr. Carson.

In the 21st c.these houses are anachronistic one can't deny that some of the greatest moments in British history are to be found within the confines of these beautiful examples of a bygone age. Julian Fellowes is a master of his art and a visionary of historical dimensions.
What I loved about the scenes of the tourists in the house, was how little the family really knew about their estate! I suspect that was very true. They had all these portraits of the former earls and ladies and there was history behind all of the China, knickknacks, etc., but they didn’t know it because they had lived in that huge house all their lives and thought everyone lived like they did! It was rather sad! I’m glad that the current Earl of Caernarvon who owns Highclere Castle, the house used as Downton, knows and treasures his family’s history!
When the Crawleys planned on downgrading their life style just a notch, was quite moving, which was the realization of the changing times and the prospects of new wealth was being found in other areas and avenues, and no longer through investments and farming. I loved how they managed to keep as close to history as possible and that the storyline of downton mirrored such accuracy.
The attention to detail in all aspects made Downton such a wonderful show.
I wish people wouldn’t compare Mary and Edith all the time.they are both great characters with flaws you don’t have to pull down one to uplift the other. Both are successful in the end.

Edith is an absolute knock out towards the end. How did that happen? For me, she was the best Downton bride 2nd time around.

Bobby...Edith was the middle daughter, insignificant, less pretty than Mary or Sybill. All this is due to the make up and clothing she had to wear - the problem with her is she always fought with Mary. Sisterly relations (you can only understand that if as a woman have a sister that you didn't get along with)! She had to earn a better disposition when she decided to get out of Mary's shadow - thank goodness they lived when they did, because 20 yrs earlier she was supposed to be looking for a husband and nothing else! That was their world and after 1919 (with the vote) they were able to get out and do something worthwhile.
I hated her hair. It was so unflattering and she didn't change it when the 20s hit. She had the same hair throughout the series 🤦♀️ I know it was a wig but they could have chosen a better one at some point...

Joanne...Anthony Hopkins viewed the series - I admire him greatly as an actor! This would be quite a tribute to the cast (after they found out he watched the series).
It would be a blessing to see England endure after such a long, fascinating history...But like in America, people are being conditioned to question and hate their history, being convinced towards a more tyrannical type of rule...socialism and all that entails. I pray that cooler heads prevail, but who knows.

The best series ever as far as I’m concerned. They just don’t make them like that anymore. Nowadays unfortunately they think they have to use a swearword every other word in order to draw an audience. That’s sad doesn’t say much about our generation does it ?

People get mad that some people have such a big home but it was those big homes that opened their doors to the sick during the wars. I love seeing big beautiful homes and helping the poor too. I just enjoy what I got.

Love how Edith and Ms. Hughes were the only people who had the spine to tell Mary , "IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT YOU; How momma would respoond: THERE YA GO. ...and granny would tell her: you can apologize or continue to be bitter.
This was an still is a once in a lifetime amazing artistic journey, 4 us all. We all loved it.
My favorite part about the ending was the switch between Edith and Mary, with Edith becoming the more beautiful and fashionable as the show goes on, and shooting well past Mary to become a Marchiones.

I agree. Mary felt entitled from the day she was born.
Having binge watched this series again, my first time view was that Mary was the bitch and screwed over Edith. However, my second viewing changed my opinion, I think Edith was the bitch and was very jealous of Mary and worked to screw her over (she nearly ruined over the pumuk incident). I also observed Edith's jealousy may have started over the first heir to downton, Patrick (who died on the Titanic) as I think Edith was in love with him and he was earmarked for Mary and Mary didn't even want him.
I have watched the entire series more than five times and I’m not embarrassed about it. I love it. The only thing I don’t love is the devotion of Bates to Anna. “She is incapable of fault “. It is wonderful to witness their love, but please.

It very much about opportunities behind the immediate. My family first left Lithuania/Poland in the mid 19th century for England for opportunity to a) eat and b) prosper. 3 generations later, members of the same family left for California and have succeeded beyond expectation. If an opportunity is presented, grab it. Do Not hesitate. Fear is one's WORST enemy.

My dad had left his stable, well paying government job in order to move into a city, so that I could have a good education. Now, I have managed to go farther in life, than the children of his friends who had stayed back in the tea estate. Now, the very people who had once snubbed at my father for being a mere private accountant, are jealous of the way our family has prospered. Take the chances which are made available to you. What is so funny about the open house, is that no one knows anything about the history of the house they live in, or the art around them. The only one who knows is Mosely.

There are some great Swedish and Danish historical dramas as well.
There is an Australian period drama called A place Called home that was really good. They also have Frannie Fischer's murder mystery

Faccio di nuovo o miei complimenti al signor Fellowes... dall'alto dei miei 59 anni mi permetto d' affermare che sia stata una delle migliori serie televisive di sempre.
Ad oggi non so ancora determinare quale dei personaggi di tutto il recitato compreso i due film e sia il migliore....(Sig.ra Maggie Smith a parte) ha solo individuato l' episodio preferito (forse ho già visto una decina di volte tutto ) e credo sia l'ottavo episodio delle terze serie...ma in generale la delicatezza di come sono trattati tutti gli argomenti presi in considerazione nella serie la silente e arguta giustizia con cui vengono puniti tutti i personaggi dei loro risvolti peggiori ed infine lei la granduchessa con il suo lungo sguardo e la sua arguzia nonché alla fine il suo vivere nonostante tutto da generico umano.

What I found so curious about this episode is when the visitors would ask who's that pointing to a painting, and the Crawleys would say gosh I dont know...??REALLY? ITS YOUR house and your relatives...
My favourite house to have visited is Muncaster Castle where the all the stories in the audio guides are narrated by the family - including their opinions on the behaviour of their ancestors. There's also a good chance of meeting a member of the family whilst you're there.
I did research a couple of years ago and the family didn't know like 80% of their painting because it was not signed, they don't know the decade lmao (which easy to tell based on fashion)
The series was, in many features, a more reserved Brideshead Revisited though more contained. But the art of it was the perfect casting to fit the incredible writing framed by the expertise of Maj- Gen. Hon Alistair Bruce of Crionaich whose real life involvement with Her Majesty, the late bereaved Queen, of happy memory, placed him in a unique position to authenticate the fine authorship of Lord Fellowes who daily rubbed elbows with aristocracy.

I haven't seen the Gwen upstairs; I did not go ahead with the full seasons. But it is very emotional to watch this video, a lot of changes, upgrade, downgrade, in - out. It is the life, it is what it is.

@@elissalombard7021 Lol not really. She had some nice outfits -mainly the red backless dress. She's just not as pretty as the actress who plays Mary. She looked less fashionable than Mary but many women their age and class weren't fashionable (you can see this is the scene when Mary is a restaurant table and exclaims that she is not a war widow).
Edith s hair was awful, even towards the end, I can't understand why they never changed her stupid hair/wig.
Mary went and cut her hair and it suited her very well, why the hell didn't they do anything for Edith s hair? Smh🤦♀️

My friend in the 80s had a brother that liked to enjoy his long holidays as if back home so he bought into a share of a manor house that was quartered with a great look over a huge valley in the Cottswolds that didn't have much to loose as the lawn in the front of the house was separated from the outlaying pasture by a ha ha or ya ya, one of those ditches from the high side you would not even notice until you fell over the descended portion from the approach. When I did my semester abroad I looked at their furniture and found with the china that they had taken the sugarspoon from their mother's sterling set. Don't know how long they enjoyed it as my friend was gone by the time he was 71 and his brother was in much worse health and a good 7 yrs older. I wonder of the otherside of the road driving di him in as one of the other students in my group had planned to visit his son in the program and before i knew it the parents after starting out their driving portion of their visit in the cotswolds had returned after an unfortunate incident driving. He probably was on the wrong roadside?

One of the best shows of the time in my opinion, it’s important that people understand it was NOTHING like this in real life for those type of people ..the Drama is all part of the entertainment factor...

Charles could have kept Downton solvent, too--an issue close to Mary's heart.
Couldn't agree more. He was so much more interesting and seemingly compatible with Mary. But there would still have been room for tension due to their differing views about the estate

WW1, Universal suffrage and 1929 had significant impact. But it was WW2 and the unexpected maintenance of war time tax levels into post war (to fund the Welfare state, NHS and war debt) that finally ended the means to run a large stately home as a family home. Full employment also meant rising pay and a large staff was impossible to find or finance. Most owners also had Edwardian values, that thought tax avoidance to be immoral: The ones that did not are the ones whose fortunes survive today. Houses appropriated during WW2 were not often returned in good condition, needing significant rennovation and repairs. Few realise quite how extreme post war austerity was, which lasted until 1950s.

Loved the series , almost like family! But its still hard for women. Have a job, look after the children, cook, clean, wash and scrub, Never ending! While my husband rows, plays basketball and loves to go fishing each weekend. And most weddings now are smaller and more intimate!

I love love this show and watched it so many times. I only have one criticism - the Crawleys were way too kind to their staff. I bet staff were treated very badly back in those times.

A minority may have done but most employers saw their staff as part of the family. In some houses generations of the family grew up supported by generations of servant families. Check out Chatsworth for instance. It was usually mutual respect and care.

If you really want to acknowledge determined strong women give due credit to Eileen Adkins and Jean Marsh, the original creators of Upstairs Downstairs of which most of Downtown Abby's plot is based upon.

@Kuchi Kopi Most of these houses were in the middle of nowhere, it's technically a plantation, a farm house. The land doesn't worth as much because there's no high demand in housing around the area, especially when you happens to lived in Midlands or Yorkshire area. Many lords demolish their house to avoid paying taxes that's implemented later by the Labor Government, more than often they simple remove the roof because demolition cost more than it's worth.
Kuchi Kopi in the 1950's grand houses like this were being demolished at the rate of two a week. We lost hundreds of beautiful stately homes. Primarily it was due to labour governments increasing taxes for the "wealthy" to eye watering levels, and death duties finished off many big houses. Others barely survived by selling land, furniture etc. Many were handed to the government to use as hospitals, schools etc and have since been left to rot. Whatever your thoughts on the aristocracy, they did at least maintain the historic buildings of this nation for hundreds of years, at no cost to the taxpayer.

Obviously they worked full time to make the amount of money to maintain the house and never explored the work of others, by lets say lend them money, properties, land etc at an extorcionary amount of money and interests. Yeah they deserved it because they've worked their butts off, meritocracy works!

@@tfh5575 Actually a lot of historically significant treasure such as paintings, statues, and a lot of other art objects were lost during that era, many purchased by rich Americans and ended up in American Museums, stuff that otherwise could decorate Britain's Museum and attract tourist.

The truth is the majority of women who left such houses for other kinds of work probably only went up one small step, but at least they had other options.

What I like most is not so much the differences between upstairs and downstairs rather than the things they share. The women are looking for more equality and freedom to choose their path in life. The men are trying to cope with an everchanging post great -war period that is shaking up the powerstructures, where women are more and more of influence. This historical accuracy in social devellopment that is within the storyline, is to be applauded, and is one of the many contributions to the succses of the series. Downton Abbey just hits the mark on so many levels!
