Great video i have a 1991 ST1100 that i must restore thats been standing for 20 years with only 39000 on the clock, your video as given me motovation to get stuck in and get the old lady back on the road. Thanks for shareing Sir.
I've got one too. 1997 in red. I find it a bit on the heavy side to paddle around, but once the engine is running and underway it's not too bad. The previous owner, 3 years ago, added a rear mudguard extension, a sensible mod. Jobs to be done this spring, new tyres, new fork seals, new brake lines, plus the usual filter and oil change. Considering I only paid £1300 for the bike it's turn out to be pretty good.
Tryin to get my courage up. Looking at a 97 with 89,000 mi on Craigslist. I'm hoping it's a Texas bike where I'm at so the corrosion would be minimal. Thanks for the before and after photos. Nice bike and from what I've read, this is the bike that can return you the value of your effort.
Excellent, well done and it looked like you were working maybe from your drive rather than a plush workshop, which makes a lot of those tasks seem more achievable. I will be attempting a good clean up of mine this winter. Thanks for the video.
My Pan is now up for sale on eBay. One point for anyone considering buying one of these is that the alternator can still keep working even when the case is cracked. Mine worked for a couple of months like that. Just because it charges doesn't mean the case is okay. They will eventually seize and jam the engine. New tyres fitted since this video.
First , i gotta say i like the background music, its nice. I hate many TH-cam channels cuz of way too loud of music intro, or its just some weird shit ! Second, this is not my first time watching you work on the bike. I have a Black one that has 78 k on it, and i am glad it is good shape, cuz this seems like a ton of work, but in the U.S. we can buy these every day in excellent shape for anywhere from $ 1,500-3,500 depending on the miles.
Haha, the music is a bit of a joke. Many years ago in the UK, it was commonly used in cinemas (and maybe on TV, IIRC) during the breaks. It's actually called "Interlude" but how old and who recorded it, I've no idea. Yeah, the wet Brit weather is a problem for these bikes and the alternator, frame/swingarm, etc. suffer. Being under many panels also leads to a "out of sight, out of mind" type of ownership. I sold the bike a few years ago, but recently discovered it's still being used on the roads and it had 133 thousand miles when I sold it!
Dear FPM, This is invaluable for any of us looking at used ST-1100/1300's ! All that plastic can hide a multitude of faults, and you have shown us where to look ! Is salt used on the road where this bike lived ? I am rather astonished at the level of corrosion. I am guessing that it is thermal shock causing the cracked alternators. BTW...dilute phosphoric acid is perfect for removing corrosion from aluminum... be sure to neutralize with baking soda and water and rinse well. Surprised you didn't pressure wash the whole thing first. Makes life so much easier.
Glad it helps and (despite criticism of the iconic music) I'll leave it up. The steel internals of the alternator rust and the expansion in doing so causes the case to crack open. Yes, salt is used in winter in the UK. I didn't have a pressure washer available at the time, but thanks for the corrosion removal tip.
Nice video. I have a VF750, but like you also have a SilverWing 600, which has done a Spain trip and northern France a couple of times. A seriously under-rated machine, sadly discontinued by Honda. I think you will find the S-W will still allow you to tour.
I have a 98 ST100 and I need to remove the intakes with the carbs, question is could you loosen the carb boots easily with the upper fair still attached. I will be replacing one of the 3 hoses underneath due to a leak most likely one of the 3 hoses. Reply will be greatly appreciated by yourself or any of the viewers. Nice video.
Do yourself a MASSIVE favour, get brand new carb boot rubbers, (pattern ones are just as good as OEM, theyre not expensive). The original ones will be hard and brittle by now and will make refitting the v4 carbs difficult. Nice new soft ones, a bit of lubrication and the carbs will pop right into place easily. My pan is still running strong after...... 468k MILES
interesting video , thinking of buying a pan . Needs some work though , swinging arm and the ABS light stays on . But I can get her for the right price , I'll be on with it ASAP . cheers for the video .
Hurley Flyer... are you local to me? It's the name of a pub nearby and the Morecambe lifeboat? I don't want to after all the work I've done, but I'm actually thinking of selling my Pan. I can't ride it easily because of my knee problem.
Good to meet you too. I thought it was an ST1100 under the cover when I first saw it a few weeks ago. I do have a rear wheel and a white front mudguard here if you want them. The wheel needs blasting and painting though. Other bits will come to mind in time. I'm just down the road from you.
From 3:15 onward are stills of the four carbs when removed and studying those pics should help. I personally don't know of any videos on stripping down the carbs, but maybe there are some on TH-cam.
Disconnect throttle n choke cables n fuel tubes, incl rr right vacuum tube to petcock. Long #2 crosshead screwdriver, slacken the top screw under each carb that holds the clamp ring tight. Front carbs screw SHOULD be to front of carb boot, rear ones to the rear etc. (Hint, when carbs are off, paint each clamp screw white - dont fill in the screwdriver slots. Will make them easier to see when refitting carbs or if they need to come off again in the future). When the screws are loose, you just need to pull the carbs up and to one side. If they are tight because the boots have hardened, you can use a wide flat tool to gently prise on one carb body away - both carbs that side should move together. If they're really tight, use frame top tube as a pivot point. Take your time, firm gentle even pressure should do it. Ps, when carbs are off, check condition of coolant hoses, clamps and 90° elbow seals. 😉
Well, funnily enough I'm thinking of selling mine because my knee's getting worse and can't cope with more than a hour or so on it. I find I'm using my Silverwing more and more.
Many years ago in the UK, it was commonly used in cinemas (and maybe on TV, IIRC) during the breaks. It's actually called "Interlude" but how old and who recorded it, I've no idea.
Good show. My weakness is the wiring. Did the relay and inline fuse come with or do I need to buy separate? Good place for purchasing? Does the alt provide enough power without overload? Is there an upgrade for alt to get more amps because I wanted to mount flood lamps and 12volt port.
The relay and fuse were bought at a car accessory shop. The alternator on later ST1100's was adequate for Police equipment, so I think you'll find it delivers enough amps.
Bonjour, Désolé, cela fait plusieurs années et la mémoire a des problèmes. Je crois me souvenir que la position du clip était importante. On pourrait alors les resserrer après montage avec un long tournevis ?
Hi,I have those Delcevici silencers on my st1100, but I really don't like how they sound. I want piece and quiet while riding. All I want to hear is the pistons sucking air in. Can be done something to them to make them silent? Cause they are stainless and I would like to keep them.
Yep, got meself on that Faecesbook thingy too. The Pan's running great - just wish I could ride it more but the knee is having a rest while I ride around on a Honda Silver Wing 600 for a while.
Ah yes. The one with the Porsche at Glasson. So, you probably recognise all the junctions and other bits... hehe, you might even know some of the drivers!
I think the main problem is getting the fairing panels off. As I remember, the gasket came away with care and I cleaned up and re-used. However, that was about 3 years ago and getting harder to recall :)
Gaskets are a moulded rubber seal. Usually comes away with the head cover as they are bonded to it. Apply a smear of gasket sealant to bottom of seal when refitting. Black or clear Silicone sealant is ideal and doesnt leave a visually horrible mess (dont use red gasket sealant 1, it doesn't work well with rubber, 2 it looks bloody awful 😅)

I sold this bike over a year ago. I do miss riding it, so I hope the new owner is still enjoying it... wherever he is.
Very nice relaxed views of a restoration. Great to have stop action with clear views.
Just ordered new carb insulators and top coolant hoses. Thanks for your excellent photos!

Thank you for making this video, it’s been very useful to me.
impossible not to love this... good job!
Top job,it will help me in my decision to buy a Pan..as fourth bike. The winters are long in the Black Forest ,so i have a regular employment

FlyingPanMan can you post the link for the usa page where I can find the alternator?
Very nice.
Looks like you did this in your back yard!
Indeed, my garage was blocked by an old caravan.

NICE WORK BRO!!
Better job than mine, well done. ☺

I got a 1999 that was flipped but its a rust free Texas bike all the bikes up here in new England are rusted to hell
nice meeting and talking to you today, white st1100

Just got a tatty st and starting the resurrection shuffle lol
Good job there👍🏻
Good video, enjoyed watching it :)
Where's a video on how to remove a ST1100 carburetor? good slideshow here though.

must get me one of those Pans

Love the background tune.....who is it ?

Bonjour, est ce que c'est normal que les colliers des collecteurs d'admission tournent quand c'est serré à fond ? Merci.

Got delkevic cans on mine. Not loud, but a bit deeper sound. You can take the removable baffle tube out for that nice v4 growl 😊
good job
Epic job
Thanks Tony. The only thing "Epic" about it was the four hour download needed with my slow connection!
No I couldn't even contemplate a task like that I take my cap off to you Sir
Haha; Epic British understatement. Love it!
Magnifique
You been holding out on us Paul......heheheh.........you're on FB these days, how's the Pan running.....roy
Yep, got meself on that Faecesbook thingy too. The Pan's running great - just wish I could ride it more but the knee is having a rest while I ride around on a Honda Silver Wing 600 for a while.
Hello do you have one cleaning the 4 carbs....?
are you ready for this was the video of yours i mentioned
Ah yes. The one with the Porsche at Glasson. So, you probably recognise all the junctions and other bits... hehe, you might even know some of the drivers!
I've a same bike in color candy red with 125000 Kms.
How hard (or easy) was it doing CYLINDER HEAD COVER how likely is it to damage the gaskets on removal for painting? please... Anyone? lol

Hi did you replace the front rotors? If so with OEM or afternarket?
They were replaced when I got it, but they were aftermarket and I painted the inner portion with heat proof black paint.
