    What a great cruise! Another fine video of a very remote Island rarely visited. Great commentary, very informative. In 1988 I spent three years driving my 1969 VW campervan from the top of Alaska to the bottom of South America. Back then I tried to get to Antarctica but was unsuccessful. Your cruise Cape to Cape was truly enlightening. I also enjoyed your canoe trip on the Nahanni River. I saw those Northern lights. One of the most spectacular highlights of my life. Are you thinking of learning to use a drone in your next series of travels. It would add wonderful additional footage.

    • @tletter
      @tletter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Train Lord
      It must have been a fascinating trip in your 1969 VW Camper Van. I wanted to make that trip when I was younger so I'm envious. In 1988, getting to Antarctica would have been a challenge. Today, Ushuaia is awash with ships heading to Antarctica.
      Yes I've thought of using a drone but it would be a space issue. On a trip to the North Pole on a Russian nuclear icebreaker, a passenger with a drone was not allowed to fly it when the ship was moving. So this really cut down on the amount of time when he could fly it.

    • @TrainLordJC
      @TrainLordJC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This new tiny portable (perfect for travellers) DJI Mavic Pro with 4K camera seems the way to go. I am extremely tempted to invest in one asap. Then learning how to use it, to capture beautiful natural landscape footage etc. By the way, have a look at Batanes Islands in the north of the Philippines. A good next time recommendation for a future adventure.

    These islands look like amazing, lovely and fascinating places - to VISIT! I wonder why there is a prohibition placed on so called 'outsiders' from settling on Tristan or participating in collective land ownership though. It would seem that the broadening of the rather 'shallow' genetic pool and expanding experience base of the existing population would be viewed as positive developments.

      "Tristan da Cunha is a small island with just one village and limited resources. Immigration is necessarily tightly controlled, and there are few expatriate job opportunities. Immigration to Tristan is not possible unless you already have a family connection with the island. Even then, there are certain restrictions on residency. It is not possible to buy real estate or property on the islands." (see www.tristandc.com/government/work.php)

    Hi. I am very interested in Tristan da Cunha so thank you for the video. I checked out your channel and saw your trip to Iceland! I'm from Iceland. This is a rather unusual way to go to Tristan. What were you doing in South Georgia? I saw the big glaciers just like the ones in Vatnajökull. Dos people live there?

    • @tletter
      @tletter  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raudavatn We were visiting South Georgia as we crossed at South Atlantic Ocean from cape to cape.
      There is no native population on South Georgia. However, there are both year-round and seasonal inhabitants. The year-round inhabitants are the British Government representatives, and scientists and support staff from the British Antarctic Survey who maintain scientific bases at Bird Island and at King Edward Point, the capital of the capital of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Seasonal inhabitants include the museum staff at Grytviken.

    Hello Tletter, what a great video description of the island. You're definitely one of few lucky people around the world that are able to visit that island.
    Do you mind if I ask you around how much money did you spend while visiting the Island, also to and from the island. I leave in Los Angeles, CA and I am wondering what would I have to do to go there and how much money I would need.
    Thank you!

      +jevd86 We went on a cruise from Ushuaia to Cape Town. There are several ships that make this trip at the end of the Antarctic cruise season. As well there is a ship that goes to the island several times a year. The easiest way to check these possibilities out is via a travel agent.

      Cost isn't the issue as Tristan is currently not accepting visitors, because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

    If you have a medical emergency there that requires specialized care, you're screwed. How do they handle that? Is it common for people to die there from medical problems that would be routinely and easily treated in a big city hospital?

    • @tletter
      @tletter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Melissa0774
      There is a small medical facility on the island called the Camogli Healthcare Centre that is manned by expatriate doctors and local nurses, with regular visits by dentists and opticians. That said, the medical care situation on Tristan da Cunha is not unique as there are many remote settlements in the world that you'd have a problem if you have a medical emergency requiring immediate specialized care and evacuation is not possible.

    • @Genaro_Flores
      @Genaro_Flores 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Melissa0774 I completely agree with you. Everyone (me as the 1st) who would like to move to TdC for living there for ever should ask him/herself if health conditions are almost outstanding or better give up, to deal with a serious medical emergency will make you curse the day you decided to move there.
      Sorry for my bad english
