@Walter , @Guitar Dog , Once you get to orange to red, in my own experience, it's time to slow down a bit. Start eyeing matches as learning experiences rather than getting to the next rank. A general approach is sometimes more important than knowing exactly which moves to watch out for since, it is likely possible that you may fight a good party time style player and there are an exponential number's worth of players with different move preferences, not just the usual dominant strategy moves.

@@PeterYMao I would love to see it but either way your channel is a gold mine as is. I appreciate the constant reminders that we’re striving for progress. I often forget that and only want to “win” and my attitude towards my opponent is always horrible when I think that way. Progress is the name of the game.
I was going to hold off on watching this until I actually get Vanquisher rank, but I'm currently at Usurper and already getting insanely good players from orange ranks. May as well study them early :/
Most people's issues is either whiffing, not side stepping, pressing buttons when they shouldn't, not block punishing, not using key moves, and some other things but those are the main ones.
glad u made this one of the reasons I don't really bother with learning matchups yet is because the chance of you running into that character you're having trouble with is pretty slim for example I have a Zafina problem I can go in the lab learning Zafina punishing moves but by the time I run into a zafina i already forgot everything simply because not a lot of ppl play her
This is something that not just you face. I face this exact same issue. The more you play against those types of players and learn to deal with the attacks the more familiar and the more you get used to it.
Never start bothering with frame but after get out from green I start learn to recognize opponent moves and 1,4 instinctively when block stuffs that should send me fly, then slowly working up 4,3 and df2,1 and finally Jet Upper their butt if -14 or more. Realizing I've been letting so many moves get away without launch punish makes me wanna learn more about each MU and frame data.
A good thing to note about in #3 is that some of those strings are natural on hit, I believe all of them are delay-able as well so you can fish for the first move to hit and hit confirm the entire string. For example Bryan’s sway back 2,4. You can fish for the sway back 2, visually see the move hit and press 4 to complete the string Excellent video btw bro! I’d love to see more
@@PeterYMao really? I’ve always seemed to fish for qcb+2 and finish the string when I see it hit. But after labbin I realized that you can still block or duck if they let the string rip or delay it
I just found out about this channel and series really helpful and love the way you explain things definitely worth the sub. Question,,, how far are you going to do this series. I’m assuming at higher ranks they should kinda know what’s what so maybe Blue ranks??
@PeterYMao Great video as always! I'm curious about this part at 15:29 and was wondering if you could explain a bit more since it's definitely something I think could help me for character match ups Is it a general rule that if the opposing character has better keep out than you that you should avoid using keep out and play more aggressive? I've always thought it better to force the opponent to play more aggressive as otherwise I feel like I'm letting them play their preferred playstyle otherwise. For example, if I'm up against Bryan using a character with less range/keep out options, I force him to be the aggressor and I play more defensively, since he doesn't have as good poking or as many options to get plus frames, and if I start playing too aggressive I'll open myself up
If you play a character with less range why would Bryan come to you? He would just play keep out and not let the character with less range in. There's no reason he needs to be going in, in that case. Also Jack is a monster when he gets momentum because of how good he is at poking, but he is bad at getting pressure off of him. That combined with his range is why you need to play more aggressively.
@@PeterYMao Yea that's a good point, I guess an experienced Bryan player wouldn't fall for that unless you have a life lead but I definitely find that a lot of people online grow impatient if they're playing keep out and you don't approach. They'll usually either get closer or the worse ones even start spamming their keep out options hoping you'll get caught even when you're out of range. Definitely makes sense that you shouldn't rely on them switching their playstyle though thanks! And yea I definitely see how characters like Jack that have both range and poking would require you to be more aggressive, that's really helpful
I can agree with most of these tips but I think Steve’s b1, 2 can be good to throw out occasionally cause unlike all the rest of the strings Steve has tons of options like a flicker cancel or crouch cancel or his weird junkyard style string, and in my experience it can be kinda good to mix up with a duck forward after a flicker cancel. It might not be too powerful but it’s not like every other string where you can just flash duck when you see the first hit. People don’t really crouch after b1 cause of all of Steve’s options, but what do I know.
It’s kinda like hei df1,1 where it can’t interrupt a jab or be delayed, but if it hits you get some initiative and you still have some good options on block, but it’s not good to throw out all the time.
Steve's flicker cancel into anything can be flash ducked because the options out of b+1 are all highs or lows. Hence flash ducking can be a powerful option. Even if he flicker cancels into something like d/f+1 his fastest mid, you can duck and stand back up, or even dick jab to check him. Of course, then this creates another layer of mind game meta.
Sir, I have just discovered your channel and it is fantastic. I am now Seiryu, but I love all your advice. You are so nice to listen too. Instant Subscribe. I hope you will be back with Tekken 8
I gotta say, from leaving the US and going to South Korea learning match ups is crazy good they don’t really rematch tho... So you learn quickly on the fly
Glad to see that my instincts about match-up knowledge and frame data being what I need to progress was correct. Feel that as an Overlord King I know my own character pretty well and that my fundamentals are okay, it's the other characters that I need to start understanding better now. My list of "problem characters" is essentially "most of the cast". Or I know how to deal with, say, a green rank Steve but a more advanced purple rank is going to work me over because my depth of knowledge isn't good enough. I fought a Fujin rank Asuka not so long ago and I think the final score was 20:3. Mostly because beyond a few pieces of knowledge I just do not understand how to fight Asuka. From what I've seen fighting higher rank players, their fundamentals are better on average, but it's superior game-knowledge that puts them where they are.
Generally speaking there's not just knowledge that higher Tekken rank players have. Speaking from experience ranks higher than orange generally have better whiff punishing, spacing, pressure, and sidestepping.
@@PeterYMao Thanks for sharing your experience! And that's something I neglected to mention in my first post. Experience is a massive advantage a game like this. I've played Tekken 7 on and off for about a year now, never really played fighting games before I picked up Tekken (a bit of FighterZ and an old flash game series called Dragon Fist if I *really* scrape the barrel). My naivete is my biggest weakness and I can only imagine how many tricks I fall for that someone playing for years wouldn't.
also what do I do if I have a problem(in literally every fighting game I have ever played) where I want to play literally every character. I started with Kazuya and thought he'd be my main forever, but after realizing I can win much more often with characters I have spent 2% of the time I spent on Kaz, I am discouraged from maining him. I really hate when I do this but I can't help but want to try legit every character. I know I will learn moves and match ups better but I'll undoubtedly be spreading myself too thin.
Don't play to win. Play to improve and then the wins will come in time. Focus on the key elements of the game such a block punishment, whiff punishment, using key moves, observing what the opponent does and mixing up your game accordingly.
1) Join one of the character discords and as questions 2) Make friends with someone who plays the character and ask them what their character's weaknesses are try to figure out how you can abuse it. Example, Jack, Bears, and Fahkumram have a hard time sidestepping. Because of this, they are usually more weak to pressure because sidestepping is generally not a good option for them. 3) Figure out what the player's weaknesses are and play to that player's weakness. Example, does your opponent have trouble throw breaking, then utilize more throws etc...
Sorry Peter I haven't submitted mine, unfortunately, there's one person that went positive in our district and we went on lockdown so I couldn't get out. I just upload and play on internet cafes 😅 But I'm glad this guide made it! 😁 I dont know much about frames but that tip number 5 you simplified it to me, and of course all the way down to number 1, gotta start to stop my bad habits that were mentioned 😂 thanks peter!
what is in common that we share the same name Peter lol. I am in the last four highest ranks. Actually I have stuck at Tekken King for months (I uploaded one promotion to Emperor video on my channel but only has 20 views lol) . At high level rank, these kind of mistakes are unforgivable. People not only know to punish u perfectly, they are also very quick to learn your game play and habits. IMHO, the best way to rank up in Orange is to focus on spacing and try to use safe moves. Learn not to push buttons and patiently wait for your turn. Don't gamble too much on 50/50 moves.
@@PeterYMao thanks Peter Mao. Thanks for your great contribution to the Tekken community. Your video is at very high quality. I bet you spent a lot of time doing this to help new players.
how to counter Leroy generally and how to counter leroy's parries. some ppl can be toxic and just use the taunt parry and it can get very frustrating not knowing what to do. where to attack when he taunt parry and more.😢.
He Leroy does his mid / high parry you can use lows. If he uses low parry then you can always use highs and mids. The other thing is not to play overly aggressive versus Leroy. If you play too aggressively then he can blow you up with parries. Bait out the parry and then whiff punish him. It's kinda like playing against Asuka or Geese. Bait out the parry and then punish.
About to get into Orange, I'm pretty fine with most of these already (vids in my channel for proof), I just need more application of the very last one I can be horrendously prone to autopiloting as Lars is so seldom played
Huh...Back to replays for me...Gonna need to make sure im not doing some things...Cheers for the info!*tips hat* 5mistake learn matchups huh? I know matchups heavily depend on your character also but will you do a season 4 anti-"character" guide? Like for example Anti-Armor-king guide. Sidestep right. Armor king loves these moves. Also need to learn throw countering. All of it lighting fast. I dont see many people (myself included) having a very long attention span to know every move. Or people could just play the video as soon they see their new online opponent loading into the game and could get the info before the second round is over. Maybe at the end of the video it would turn into a video FOR Armor king that shows moves he should consider so people woudent side-step right (i think downforward 2 catches them). have a graph that what your gameplay should be as AK. 1 graph says poke and pictures of all the characters underneath it that Armor king should be poking against. 2.Graph says rushdown and pictures of all the characters you should be crazy aggressive against etc. Last graph could "special" that just means that nothing else works besides research. Hope the suggestion made some sense, wasent total trash and it could work somehow. It would be a ton of work but i would grateful for it.
Yikes. That seems like a lot of work. Unfortunately, I don't know that I could do something like that. :( maybe one day when I get bigger as a channel.
Just a nitpick but the problem with doing Jin's 1,2,3 uf+2 is that if they backdash or sidestep it and it whiffs and they get a free punish. You can also see it whiff in the footage and Raven should get a free df+2 here since the recovery is really bad on uf+2
this exactly. the -7 on block isnt even the biggest issue. also he does uf2 after 124 which has pushback and is - on block making the uf2 even easier to make whiff.
Jonas and Stargazing Embers. You guys are right. u/f+2 the issue is it whiffing for sure. What I was trying to convey was "don't autopilot setups." Setups have a place, but they are more for when you get a read on something and then want to capitalize, not for a I'm going to just use it constantly cause "I HOPE THIS HITS!"
I really like this episode the most, special thanks for encouraging people checking unknown moves with 10f, it's really priceless. PS don't get too predictable with these checks though ;)
Another cool vid I have a recommendation Why not do a video about timing(specifically Bryans f3), its a short but important part of Tekken that I see a bunch of people ignoring
@@PeterYMao I know but having a video that explains/introduces timing as an idea to beginners/intermediates would be a great addition to your guide list, while being a short an "easy" video to make
Generic d/f+1 are only -1 on block. Most of the time at worst you are trading with a magic 4 which is okay cause you still don't die from that usually.
@@PeterYMao i really hope u do some stuff about high level, like how to counter an annoying character or tips about high level movement or anything of your choosing u seem to have even much experience than me and i know if it comes from u it will be great 👍🏻
Sometimes it's not about playing more, but rather doing better with your time. Labbing the correct things and learning to space, punish, block certain strings etc..
@@PeterYMao I agree... labbing - such a terrible word! That must be the reason. Thank you Peter. I have already sent you my pathetic videos (the worst red rank player ever)😅
Can you explain the phenomenon of reaching your highest rank and then going on a massive losing streak? I made it to Juggernaut then did nothing but lose all the way to warrior. My confidence is completely shot because I don't understand why.
The phenomenon is call every one has bad days. Or playing on tilt. There just times you should step away from playing. Some days it works out for you what your doing, other times it doesn’t work.
Bruh. I totally forgot to send in games. Time to grind for reds lol. I am getting pretty close to reds though. Just need to make the last push on a good day.
Dragunov's b+4,2,1's purpose is that it is NCC, i15 safe mid, and it is not important to learn matchups until Fujin ranks xd. Still most of those mistakes are bad habits that will have to be removed, making progress illusory when the players get to play stronger opponents. They are not what makes them unable to win at the moment, only will in the future. Seriously just backdash and whiff punish :P BTW. you shouldn't try to launch second hit of Heihachi hellsweep xD
I must be nuts, because I swear he did this video already. I'm definitely guilty of not launching stagger lows, mostly because I'm *still* getting hit by them. It's amazing how many times I've gotten popped by a Snake Edge as soon as I'm about to backdash. Even when I *do* block a Snake Edge or Hellsweep that I actually *predicted* I wind up just dick jab punishing it 99% of the time. I usually give a "set-up" two tries before I abandon it if it doesn't work, which they usually don't. Unless it's something very low risk, then I might try it again.
I usually play EXTREMELLY defensive against Bryan. I play Miguel, and one of his weaker points is how hard it is for him to get in. So I actually need Bryan to come at me, even if that means not being able to pressure well, at least I won't get caught by Bryan's damgerous keepout. But this part is difficult and it takes a lot of time and research.
I can't believe it In literaly 4 days, I went from juggernaut to savior and I can't thank enough I hope I can improve more and beat fakumrham for once (I main DVJ)
Rank: Overlord (Hei) My mistake score: 3/5 This is my first tekken i play competitively and ive been playing for 3 years now. My biggest weakness is character matchup knowledge, and having to buy a character to lab em doesn't help.
Having to buy a character to lab them is absolutely a problem, but other fighting games have them as well. I really wish fighting games would let you "practice against a charcter, in PRACTICE MODE." This way you can try a chracter out before considering buying them. Anyhow, thanks for watching Effarto La Cobo :)

Yea every ranked run I record I try to analyze my matches after and train things I struggle with. But Please keep making these they are very well produced and they help a lot of people. Much love man ❤
These are very helpful vids. I have remained a red rank for a while. Red is the highest i have gotten in Tekken. And though this is a orange rank vid, these tips apply to many ranks in they have helped me a lot. Last night I played after a Hiatus and the Fram trap tip was a big help. My Geese and Negan improved alot cause of this. Looking forward to the red rank Vid.
Glad to hear! I'll be making more for sure
hey bro just want to say, watching all of your videos is a pleasure. I am really shocked by the production quality, editing, and sound mixing. It all sounds great, and I wish for you to enjoy more success as your content is some of THE absolute best Tekken content, right up there with TBS. I hope you stick around, because I am sure you'll be blowing up once Tekken 8 comes out when we're all 50 years old
I appreciate that! Yeah, lately with the my busy work schedule and changes to my personal life, I haven't had the most time to actually upload more content. Perhaps when I'm not so busy I will be able to do upload more videos. Thanks :)
@@PeterYMao I would love to see it but either way your channel is a gold mine as is. I appreciate the constant reminders that we’re striving for progress. I often forget that and only want to “win” and my attitude towards my opponent is always horrible when I think that way. Progress is the name of the game.
Great content, really wonderful delivery. can't wait to see more from you!
Thanks Dan! Will be trying to do more.
I was going to hold off on watching this until I actually get Vanquisher rank, but I'm currently at Usurper and already getting insanely good players from orange ranks. May as well study them early :/
Got to byakko since the video on yellow rank mistakes... Super helpful, my main issue was whiffing I think
@@PeterYMao yea i know some few characters strings and which way to sidestep them
This is an amazing series. Hope to see Blue ranks soon.
We gotta make it through the red and purple ranks first.
@@PeterYMao Oh, I know and am waiting eagerly for those. I have no doubt I'll find something useful there as well.
Yup! Block punishing is something that players should get into the habit of using the easy stuff and then move into the harder stuff later.
A good thing to note about in #3 is that some of those strings are natural on hit, I believe all of them are delay-able as well so you can fish for the first move to hit and hit confirm the entire string. For example Bryan’s sway back 2,4. You can fish for the sway back 2, visually see the move hit and press 4 to complete the string
Excellent video btw bro! I’d love to see more
qcb+2,4 is not hit confirmable
@@PeterYMao really? I’ve always seemed to fish for qcb+2 and finish the string when I see it hit. But after labbin I realized that you can still block or duck if they let the string rip or delay it
@@ShyTheRula yeah qcb+2,4 is not hit confirmable. There's not enough frames to do it.
5:19 you're wrong about that, Heihachi's hellsweep after they get hit by the first low and then blocks the 2nd is only -10 and it has a stagger block
That's the only situation where it's a -10 stagger. There are very few cases other than that.
I just found out about this channel and series really helpful and love the way you explain things definitely worth the sub. Question,,, how far are you going to do this series. I’m assuming at higher ranks they should kinda know what’s what so maybe Blue ranks??
I will be going all the way up to the royal blue ranks.
Good and very useful video! Hope you do more clips for Tekken players :)
That's the plan!!!!
@PeterYMao
Great video as always! I'm curious about this part at 15:29 and was wondering if you could explain a bit more since it's definitely something I think could help me for character match ups
Is it a general rule that if the opposing character has better keep out than you that you should avoid using keep out and play more aggressive?
Useful as always thanks Peter
You're welcome droppy :)
The Legend is back.

Finally I’ve been waiting for this video, thanks man the others helped.
Nice! All the best on your journey.
@@PeterYMao I Appreciate it thanks for the reply mate!
I just hit Orange thanks to your advices, perfect timing for me to get to red, thank you again ❤️
Nice nice! Keep going!
Not rematching seems to be a common theme.

Another Awesome Video Bro!
Thanks again!!!
Do you plan on doing this for every ranks? I think it would be really helpful.
Yes. I am currently making my way through the ranks and will probably make it to the royal blue ranks.
Very informative as always!!
Thanks Gil!!
Nice as usual!
Appreciate that!!

So how do you know how your character should be playing the match up? 15:53
1) Join one of the character discords and as questions
2) Make friends with someone who plays the character and ask them what their character's weaknesses are try to figure out how you can abuse it.
Just got to orange Ranks. Gonna check what to improve on before I suffer.
Definitely ShinyShinx. Make sure to check out the mistakes and learn from them.

@@PeterYMao I wont 😊 thanks so much Peter!
Two part question, what rank are you and do I need flogged for not knowing?
Last season I was purple rank. Also does it really matter? LOL
what is in common that we share the same name Peter lol.
Absolutely Peter. Great insight! I hope things go well for you and you can hit your goal of hitting TGP one day :)
About to get into Orange, I'm pretty fine with most of these already (vids in my channel for proof), I just need more application of the very last one
I can be horrendously prone to autopiloting as Lars is so seldom played
Huh...Back to replays for me...Gonna need to make sure im not doing some things...Cheers for the info!*tips hat*
5mistake learn matchups huh?
:( maybe one day when I get bigger as a channel.
thanks for helping us become better Bryan players
You're welcome!
Great stuff peter, even tho climbing ranked will be even harder now T.T
LOL. Just wait till Season 4 if you interested.

I have a recommendation
Why not do a video about timing(specifically Bryans f3), its a short but important part of Tekken that I see a bunch of people ignoring
Wouldn't that be based on your opponent? You would have to get a timing for your opponent's button presses and each opponent is different.
@@PeterYMao I know but having a video that explains/introduces timing as an idea to beginners/intermediates would be a great addition to your guide list, while being a short an "easy" video to make

why it is ok to press a button after a d/f+1 even though it is minus on block?
Generic d/f+1 are only -1 on block. Most of the time at worst you are trading with a magic 4 which is okay cause you still don't die from that usually.

@@PeterYMao thanks
Dragunov's b+4,2,1's purpose is that it is NCC, i15 safe mid, and it is not important to learn matchups until Fujin ranks xd.
Still most of those mistakes are bad habits that will have to be removed, making progress illusory when the players get to play stronger opponents. They are not what makes them unable to win at the moment, only will in the future.
Seriously just backdash and whiff punish :P

Yes.

Nah. This is first video I'm doing for the orange ranks.
As an orange rank (Savior) Bryan player, I see all of these mistakes in my gameplay.
Orange and red ranks are really not that far apart.
Autopiloting is still a very common mistake seen in red ranks too (I confess as being one of them lmao)
Autopiloting not just restricted to red ranks. It goes even higher than that. Much much higher.
hey how high of a rank do you review? I'm mostly in red rank with my main in eternal ruler
I'm currently going through the ranks and I am making this video series all the way up to royal blue ranks.

Playing patient on the approach to Bryan is definitely the way to go. No one should just be rushing in. Just seems like a bad idea.

Having to buy a character to lab them is absolutely a problem, but other fighting games have them as well. I really wish fighting games would let you "practice against a charcter, in PRACTICE MODE."
