Not only watching for the animation but learning the audio cues is important as well. People actually react faster to sound rather than sight, believe it or not. Learning audio cues helps against moves that look similar but have different properties.
Wow as an intermediate player I've always found practice overwhelming, this has really simplified it. As always thank you for laying down the bridge to help people like me start their journey of progress across the vast sea that is Tekken.
Hey Ben, I'm happy to lay down the bridge but it's up to the player to take the steps to cross it. Just make sure to remember that on that journey it's progress, not perfection. As long as you make the attempt to punish, regardless of whether you get the timing or not. You'll find that once you get it nailed down you need to punish this "X,Y or Z" move with your "A,B, or C" move it's just a matter of timing and that's easier than remember to use a particular move. Best of luck bud!
After watching your videos, I have noticed an increase of skill in my gameplay. Obviously I'm not super amazing at the game, but its motivating to see progress. Thanks so much!

Man thanks so much no one has ever made a good video explaining how to lab a character holy shit. LONG NEEDED and why the hell is your channel not more popular.
My channel isn’t as popular because not everyone is interested in learning Tekken. Some people just prefer to watch “entertainment” not necessarily learn.
When a certain character beats my ass online for multiple matches, I add the player, befriend them, and ask them for games for the next few weeks or months until I'm able to whoop them at least 50% of the time
The quality of the content you are making is mindblowing , I hope we will see you make more content again in the futur, probably very busy with the family and life
Thank you so much for this! It is exactly what I needed. I just reached Genbu for the first time with Bryan. However what costs me most of the time is ineffective block punishment. I block consistently even quick lows, but I just punish with 1+4 or not at all :P. However because I am bored to lab and do not know how to find a character's most common moves I have just relied on match experience. Now I can start labbing effectively! I will also start supporting your work now that I am getting a proper job :)
Something that helped me was realizing that a lot of moves in Tekken often follow certain "rules" that can be applied to multiple characters even if you don't have or can't remember the frame data. Hopkicks are jab punishable, df-1s are safe while df-2s usually aren't, mid launchers that are safe are often a little "slower" and/or steppable so they're not broken, that kind of stuff. The one problem with the record function is that you can't lab a sequence or scenario if you can't do it yourself, like someone wavedashing toward me after a knockdown, Dragonav taking advantage of plus frames after his running 2 that I can never sidestep in an actual match, or half the shit Hwoarang does that I can never remember how to play against for some reason. It's also weird that the dummy will sometimes do moves that you didn't record and you can't make it do otg throws even if you're on the ground. Also, you obviously can't lab dlc characters unless you buy said characters.
Can't believe how fast your channel is growing, my man! I've been a huge fan for over a year and it's been amazing watching you grow. You s deserve even more than you get ❤

I wanted to be prepared for EVERYTHING they could throw at me. I like to learn opponent character's strings while playing against it. Every time they throw a string i memorize how it looks like when it starts so it can help early in the animation and it's pretty fast to learn the different endings to strings and how to punish them. In short while playing i'm learning the opposing character as if i would play/practise with that character.

Hey peter I’m a intermediate to advanced tekken player whenever I practice a character I use for the first time by going through their move list and sample combos to see if I can go on from there and make up my own combos
I personally watch some games of pros playing a character to see what moves are usually used, what the combos look like from a pros perspective, and then look up some combo videos online. From there I decide if I want to try the character out. But I suppose everyone has a different take on it.
this reminds me of clowns who say "too many moves" then you find out, they're labbing against 10 hits lol....good vid, people need to use common sense, nobody ever ever uses all 120+ moves a character has, just makes no sense, its usually top 15-20
Hi, I have been playing Tekken since Tekken 3 on arcades. Recently I downloaded Tekken 7 on pc. During the game when I press the right punch button nothing happens. When I'm Pressing the Right Kick button my character automatically grapples the opponent. The left punch and Left kick are working fine. I have turned off the basic combo option. What more should I do to get back to the basic RP RK LP LK setup? It is so annoying. Please help?
At 4:00 you talk about 1 week per char . That's pretty Ok to learn Tekken. At 4:18+ you ask what are the chances that I'm going to remember things from 49 weeks ago? I will and, in fact, I do. I go from character to character until I get to know them. For example, my last one was Bryan. My first one was Paul. I started in January 2019. I play with big breaks: sometimes weeks, sometimes months, so I have only finished about half the cast. I played some deathmatches vs Paul just a week ago and my punishment vs Paul is still super solid: I punish d/f+2 on whiff, I punish deathfist on whiff and block, I punish demoman on block and hit: SSL~block after second hit, then f+1+2 on reaction. I play at TGP level vs people who know how to abuse characters, so there's that. What I do when I lab is: • Send many friend requests to people from leaderboards who play that character. It lets you send only around 30 friend requests at a time but after a week you can send around 100 friend requests and it's enough to find matches in the evening. • Go through characters movelist and document all moves: startup frames, see if I can sidestep moves left or right, or if I can't. How minus are moves on block? Can I punish them? What I can punish them with? I do excel sheets, takes about 6 hours to go through character's movelist but it's worth it. • Determine moves and strings that people actually use and abuse. Make multiple lists of these moves to practice in practice mode. Sometimes it's 30 moves, sometimes it's 60. • Load these moves in practice mode 5-10 at a time(there's a tool for that on PC). • Practice punishing punishable moves until I can consistently(at about 80% success rate) punish all these moves in practice mode. • After I can punish punishable move consistently, open chat and ask people to play with you. • Record my matches I play and see what moves people use in neutral and see what more I can do against these moves in neutral. • See how people chain moves and what I can do against the most popular chains. After about a week of this training routine I can beat about 9/10 people I play from the leaderboards. I only add people from Ryujin - Tekken God Prime ranks because this is where you find people who play character the best you can find online. Here's some match I recorded few weeks ago after doing the training routine: th-cam.com/video/is2TcFidshw/w-d-xo.html I'm not a machine but the results are there.
Congrats on being able to punishing, and remember stuff from 49 weeks ago. It's not common that players will remember everything like that. You truly are an exception on that matter I would say. But none the less, big props to you, and keep up the good work bud.
My #1 for players who are playing for the long term is to practise to play with every single character on a basic level so you know all top moves by heart and are aware of their strategies. It's really fun and you might find your favorite new character/s that way. I started that early this year and i have so far played till 200 wins online with Kunimitsu, Ganryu, Zafina, Julia, Marduk and Anna. I main Kazumi, Heihachi and Yoshimitsu and when i see the bonus characters i have practised basics with i can beat them noticeably easier than others i haven't. Also this way i can recall their moves better because i have them in my muscle memory. And the game is also more interesting because you can enjoy 100% of the game and not just 4% with playing with just two characters.
Just found your channel. Great content by the way. Next to repeat action, there is a 10 or 0 that increments 10. What is that for? Not sure the exact meaning of it.
It's used to varying the frequency of how often that attack shows up. If you have a move that is set to 10 and another move that's set to 1 the move at 10 will show up more frequently, than the move set at 1.

Thanks for all the kind words, but I don’t have time recently to be making guides. Life is extremely busy and I prioritize my family over TH-cam and twitch.
I started playing tekken when i was a kid with tekken 3 and i haven't started playing it srsly and understanding the fundamentals of the game such as frames and punishes etc etc till like 2 years ago when i started fooling around tekken 7. Am a jin main, and am still a beginner since i got the online like a month ago and i' ve been getting shit for choosing a Mishima to start with and shit on by cancer characters (chloe, lili, shaheen etc etc), any thoughts on how to improve my tekken game would be amazing
This is a very hard question to answer, but my suggestion is work on whiff punishing. Players tend to whiff a lot in the lower ranks and from what it sounds like you are probably orange ranks or below. Another thing to work on is positioning. If you start getting close to a wall you need to start repositioning away
15 to 25 is already excessive, in my eyes. what helped me was: - hop online - get screwed - check replays - find the 5 moves, that piss you off the most, in the matchup, that pissed you off the most - lab that only, until the mental fog lifts that's all that there is, for me at least
thats cool and all but as a beginner, im asked to memorize all of this and apply all of my knowledge during a real game? thats a crap ton of moves that are just written and down and am told to use these/ defend against them
Don't just "memorize" you need to practice it. It's like playing a music instrument, it takes time and practice, not just memorizing. Memorizing notes, knowing what notes to play is not enough because you will be too slow initially. Practicing it will make things faster to the point where you won't even have to think about it later on.
It's a great asset for sure. Having the ability to rewatch your games is definitely something I always advocate players to do. When you rewatch your matches you are able find things you did correctly (block punish, whiff punish, spacing etc..) and continue to do them. When you find things you didn't know like block punishing certain attacks you're able to learn from them. I suggest learning the moves of character based on their top 15 moves first, and then if you have time learn more. Setting a schedule really helps with practicing. It's like going to the gym, putting in 30min to 45min a day isn't bad. :) Hope that helps you out bud.
I will add something that became very useful for me in matches I didnt lab: Be aware and get used to see the recovery animation You can use this video to notice the differences between -10 and -15 for example Also hopkicks are usually -12/-13, WGF are -10, Mishimas 1,1,2 are -17 and most strings that endup in a mid/low are for the most part -(pay attention to the recovery, some are plus)
The animation for recoveries are very different and sometimes a case by case basis. Example of a very minus move that doesn't have very good recovery animation, but are launch punishable are moves like Asuka's f+2, and Feng's b+1+2 come to mind. There's very little stun animation. But as a rule, you can look for the recovery animations.
@@PeterYMao true thats why I keep finding new punishable moves all the time😅 Its just a way that helped me see them in matches Another one was to understand(from a developer perspective) how a move works(if I know the properties) Example: Moves with pushback should be punishable if my back is at the wall...thats why I never understood EWGF
Is it me or does any other beginner does not understand terms like punish and the moves that are written in letters like d,4 etc. Everything is new to me.
You are watching a video that’s labeled 204. I built a whole series around understanding how to learn Tekken. It’s in my playlist. Additionally Tekken notation is just this way to prevent confusion. If you play PC how would I know which keys you should press? If you play XBox the X button is different than PlayStation X button. Because of this, we use notations in Tekken. There are a lot of notations, but other TH-cam content creators have gone ahead and made resources to help you understand what they mean. Just TH-cam Tekken button notation
I would say not particularly. They are more for using to learn to punish stuff that is commonly abused, like snake edges, and certain strings that have huge flaws in them
When you said "learn the words that are more commonly spoken" several lightbulbs lit up in my head

Not only watching for the animation but learning the audio cues is important as well. People actually react faster to sound rather than sight, believe it or not. Learning audio cues helps against moves that look similar but have different properties.

Dude epic video! This helps big time. And these resources are golden! Cant wait to lab Hwoarang's string cheese havin ass! He gets me with that five cheese Italian blend all the time, lmao! Now I will be able to stop him with knowledge.
👍collect the cheese and make a pizza :D
Whats the song in 11:35 ? Btw I will use this next practice mode session , tekken library !!)
Great question, I actually don't know. Sorry xD
Very well explained, the most boring part is having to lab every single character
Some people love it, some people hate it. Labbing characters is just something that takes time. But nonetheless. Thank you for watching :)
Really good idea 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey peter I’m a intermediate to advanced tekken player whenever I practice a character I use for the first time by going through their move list and sample combos to see if I can go on from there and make up my own combos
I personally watch some games of pros playing a character to see what moves are usually used, what the combos look like from a pros perspective, and then look up some combo videos online. From there I decide if I want to try the character out. But I suppose everyone has a different take on it.
PeterYMao actually that is also what I do as well so I can make sure that I’m good with my choice of a certain character
Just what I needed thank you again and again
No prob Droppy!
ur work is superb
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant peter as always 👍🏾
Thanks Captain!!!
this reminds me of clowns who say "too many moves" then you find out, they're labbing against 10 hits lol....good vid, people need to use common sense, nobody ever ever uses all 120+ moves a character has, just makes no sense, its usually top 15-20
Thanks for the vote of confidence and thank you for the kind words Bludika. Happy to you see you still watch my content from time to time.
Love the video!
^_^ thank you thank you
Hi, I have been playing Tekken since Tekken 3 on arcades.
Uhhhh... I have no idea what kind of problem that is. I can't say I've ever seen this...
It's either your controller or your fingers are too fat
You good sir! Have a faulty controller....BUY A NEW ONE
Why does my opponent do nothing after setting moves.
yo i needed this!
And this video needs you!
@@PeterYMao been doing the inefficient way sincee, so thank you so much for this!
@@deibeu2163 I'm glad I've been able to save you some time. LOLOLO
At 4:00 you talk about 1 week per char
What I do when I lab is:
• Send many friend requests to people from leaderboards who play that character.
Here's some match I recorded few weeks ago after doing the training routine: th-cam.com/video/is2TcFidshw/w-d-xo.html
I'm not a machine but the results are there.
Congrats on being able to punishing, and remember stuff from 49 weeks ago. It's not common that players will remember everything like that. You truly are an exception on that matter I would say. But none the less, big props to you, and keep up the good work bud.
Wish they had more of the dlc chars . couldn't find zafina julia or noctis
Yeah, unfortunately it hasn't been updated in a while. =\
thank you for your great effort
Thank you! Thank you for watching
0:40 in my game it didn’t do anything just standing 😢😢
Put the 'key-moves' at relatively range.😊
✊ Preciate you
You mentioned that you just need to study 4 characters, I assume you did mention Bryan fury, and asuke as 2 of them. But what about the other 2.
Yup, that's an option too.
@@PeterYMao Gotcha
Bro you are amazing
Sir my main is paul phoenix and I want a complete guide for my character.
You created lots of guide for your main Bryan fury like that I want for my character paul phoenix.
If any thing available for my character help me sir.
Finally, keep uploading tekken related videos because your video quality, way of talking, way of explanation are so good 🙂
You can get more subscribers like MAINMANSWE because of your good way of presentation.
KEEP ROCKING and ALL THE BEST 👍
Thanks for all the kind words, but I don’t have time recently to be making guides. Life is extremely busy and I prioritize my family over TH-cam and twitch.

Anybody has any such matchup move list for T8?
15 to 25 is already excessive, in my eyes.
what helped me was:
- hop online
- get screwed
- check replays
- find the 5 moves, that piss you off the most, in the matchup, that pissed you off the most
- lab that only, until the mental fog lifts
that's all that there is, for me at least
Everyone learns differently. Your method is definitely a valid one as well.
thats cool and all but as a beginner, im asked to memorize all of this and apply all of my knowledge during a real game?
thats a crap ton of moves that are just written and down and am told to use these/ defend against them
Don't just "memorize" you need to practice it. It's like playing a music instrument, it takes time and practice, not just memorizing. Memorizing notes, knowing what notes to play is not enough because you will be too slow initially. Practicing it will make things faster to the point where you won't even have to think about it later on.
Thank you :)
No problem 😊
I know this video is old Peter but do you think tekken punishment triang is a efficient way to lab or is it waste of time?
It's not the most efficient way to lab because a lot of times not all the moves they show you will be commonly seen.
What are your thoughts on *Punishment Training* mode?
It's a great asset for sure. Having the ability to rewatch your games is definitely something I always advocate players to do. When you rewatch your matches you are able find things you did correctly (block punish, whiff punish, spacing etc..) and continue to do them. When you find things you didn't know like block punishing certain attacks you're able to learn from them. I suggest learning the moves of character based on their top 15 moves first, and then if you have time learn more. Setting a schedule really helps with practicing. It's like going to the gym, putting in 30min to 45min a day isn't bad. :) Hope that helps you out bud.
@@PeterYMao kudos, bro
I will add something that became very useful for me in matches I didnt lab:
Be aware and get used to see the recovery animation
You can use this video to notice the differences between -10 and -15 for example
Also hopkicks are usually -12/-13, WGF are -10, Mishimas 1,1,2 are -17 and most strings that endup in a mid/low are for the most part -(pay attention to the recovery, some are plus)
@@PeterYMao true thats why I keep finding new punishable moves all the time😅
Its just a way that helped me see them in matches
Another one was to understand(from a developer perspective) how a move works(if I know the properties)
Example:
Moves with pushback should be punishable if my back is at the wall...thats why I never understood EWGF
This sounds like Armored Core music.
O_O? I am unfamiliar with that. Sorry
Just TH-cam Tekken button notation
got bullied by a howrang and leo😭 sent me to this video
omg I see hope

Where's i got the hits that is not in movelist
Example
When kazuya in devil mode his ewgf is mid but game dose not tell this in movelist

Hello, Peter.
Hi :)
I am a new Tekken player myself. Can those resources be used to learn a character better as well?
I would say not particularly. They are more for using to learn to punish stuff that is commonly abused, like snake edges, and certain strings that have huge flaws in them
Your videos are helpful as always peter. You've been working that armor king haven't you?
Lol. No no mike. I wish I had but I haven’t. But... maybe I should
