The first time I ever saw Doctor Who, it was with Tom Baker, and Elisabeth Sladen in "The Terror of the Zygons", and I loved the entire episode! I was hooked from word one, and marveled at the dynamic between the two characters. When I heard that they brought her back for another episode with David Tennant... there were no words that needed to be said. The tears running down my face were more than enough... and then the ending... that beautiful ending had me hooked. Rest in peace Elisabeth Sladen, our Sarah Jane Smith, and thank you David Tennant for such a beautiful foreword.
@@wardjunior1450 That man was one of a kind, but my focus was on Sarah Jane... Elisabeth Sladen was an awesome actress, and well deserving of the fans she retained over the years.
"As a child, I was delighted to know Sarah Jane Smiths, as an adult, I was privileged to know Elizabeth Sladen" My God :( :( that was so sad :( Rest in Peace Sarah :(
This is why David Tennant is my Doctor. He was such a fan of the show. That child like wonder he displays. That is what the Doctor should be. Adventurous, child like, eager. That is the heart of the Doctor.
I Don't think that is really pertinent, Matt Smith own the role when he was on the show, almost every bit as much as David Tennant and now Peter Capaldi, both of whom are lifelong fans.
When you listen to how much he adored her, and how starstruck he was working with her, you really appreciate the talent. She slipped right back into her role of following his lead SO WELL you would swear she'd never left. And even when Sarah Jane gets her own show, it's with the same warmth and sometimes silliness. She doesn't try to be the Doctor, she's a wholly human kind of hero. Her enormous talent and respect for the character really shined.
When I first watched "School Reunion" I only knew that Sarah Jane Smith was a very popular companion from the classic series. After I had watched the episode I instantly understood why she was so popular. Elizabeth Sladen brought a kind of magic to that role. You couldn't help but feel with the character. While I was already hooked on Doctor Who at that point, it probably was her performance that made me the complete and irreversable whovian I am now. When she passed away I had only known about her for about 3 months and I still cried.
*Tears* I was just thinking the other about how he reacted upon meeting her in the School Reunion episode and the joy in seeing her again. It wasn't acting, it was real, he was proud and thrilled and ecstatic. "Oh, good for you Sarah Jane!"
“As a child I was delighted to know Sarah Jane Smith, as an adult I was privileged to know Elisabeth Sladen”😭💔 Who’s here after the tribute to Sarah Jane💔🥺
the high school reunion episode is one of my favorite, because you can see something special in David. You can see he's really enjoying the moment and having the chance to share the stage with Elizabeth... you can see it in his face, his eyes, the way he says her name. I loved Sarah Jane Smith, she was awesome.
Me too Sarah Jane showed me the wonders of the universe she made me see life on bannerman road was out of this world I remember watching the Sarah Jane adventures every Monday and Tuesday she got me into Doctor who she showed me there's a batter way to look at the universe and its wonders I would love how team Sarah Jane would save the world from their computer in their attic it was truly magical seeing the mo a Lisa come to life meting the piped piper, defeating slitheen and stop them taking over and meeting the policemen of space the judoon Sarah Jane saved earth so many times and the doctors not there to do that all the time he comes and goes plus I would love her little speeches and when she spoke about the Doctor though I didn't know who he was at the time I was like omg when are we gonna meet him. I guess you reach a time in your life when many of your childhood heroes start passing away, what wonderful words beautifully read, this just chokes me up, so moving I hope somebody writes something like this about me someday
Beautiful. Just truly beautiful. I miss you Sarah- Jane. I am so sad Elisabeth Sladen is not here to share in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of DW. Not only did one generation of children get to grow up with her but The Sarah Jane Adventures gave another generation - my generation to watch in wonder at Sarah Jane Smith - at Elisabeth Sladen. Rest in Peace. You will always be one of the brightest companions that any Doctor has or ever will have.
I always liked Sarah Jane Smith on Doctor Who, and when she made an appearance on one of David Tennant's Doctor Who stories, I was overjoyed! She did look the same, only older, of course. I wrote her a few letters, and I was in awe when she actually wrote back! I cried terribly when I learnt that she had died in 2011! She was gracious, and kind, and she took time out of her busy life to write me a letter! I miss her! ~Janet in Canada
Sarah Jane will always be my favorite companion. The scene where the Doctor departs in the Tardis and she finds K9 waiting for her is one of the most special moments in the entire series.
A fantastic tribute by a wonderful man to a formidable woman. The world isn't as bright without her. RIP Elisabeth. Also I have to say, Tennant has such a gorgeous, soothing voice. He should totally do audio book narrations. His voice is so perfect for that type of thing.
To this day i still can't believe she's gone. That was a simply beautiful tribute from David Tennant.. very moving. And how the hell can 21 people not like this??
This is unbelievably sad and beautiful. The saddest moment for me was hearing him say the date, being several months after her death. SO SAD! I'm a moderately new Whovian, but have watched almost all of the new series, and a few episodes of the Sarah Jane Adventures, and in her few episodes, she has become one of my favorite characters. Actually, I just discovered that she had died, so this kinda brought tears.. This lovely moment, recounted by David Tennant, was simply amazing, and truly believable, and incredible. Amazing actress, such a loss for fans and the entertainment industry. RIP...
I'm in the same position as you! I just found out right now....I didn't realize she died. now I'm really sad, but this was a beautiful reading by David. Loved the episode with her, and love the Sarah Jane adventures. How old was she by the way? she still looked very young in the shows.
Megan62442 Elisabeth Sladen died at 65, a few months after she was diagnosed with cancer. According to Wikipedia, she found out in February in died in April... Apparently, the Doctor Who episode, Impossible Astronaut was dedicated to her, upon it's airing, followed by a tv Special called, "My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen". That is SO sad...I was wondering why there was never any more episodes with her rebooted character...now we know why.. :(
I've read this forward before, but it's very moving to *hear* Mr. Tennant speak those words. Sarah Jane was my first companion and forever my favorite. It's a wonderful thing to find out the person behind a beloved character exceeds the qualities that made you love that character.
This was the warmest, most touching and heartfelt tribute I have ever heard. I can't believe Elisabeth Sladen is gone. Maybe in that next life Sarah Jane is enjoying new adventures in her own TARDIS.
Absolutely Beautiful. I found myself getting Choked up half way through the reading. David's Voice throughout was compassionate and Truly Sincere as he painted a Picture of just how much Elisabeth Sladen will be missed.
Such a lovely foreword :) I remember it being on the news when Elizabeth passed, and I was only 11 but I was so sad. I loved Sarah Jane so much, and Elizabeth was such a lovely person. I remember crying slightly because I grew up with her character. Even though I wasn't born to see the classics, my Dad still watched them with me
I've been watching her on Who since the early 90s. I watched reruns of the show when I was growing up. The first time I seen her I was 4 or 5. In 2011, I thought she'd live for another 20 or 30 years, maybe more. So when I heard about her death, I was devastated. And I never even really knew her. She's the only performer whose death has effected me like that. I miss her deeply.
Holy crap, this made me cry. David's words were so powerful and beautifully-rendered. It's such a moving way to capture such a stunning and amazing woman, but it seems like just a small gesture when compared to the enormity of just what an impact Lis and Sarah Jane had on her admirers. I was absolutely FLOORED with this. Thank you, David, for touching my heart, yet again.
You might get someone new to play the Doctor, "Regenerated". Elisabeth Sladen can be the only Sarah Jane Smith. She was a smart, brave, tough, independent woman. A Companion, to define the role of Companion. The 1st the U.S. audience would know, maybe the Best. Except for the TARDIS, 30 years locks the role for longest. Only a handful of actors have been asked to play the same role for 30 years! I saw the announcement on the News of her loss, and people wonder how I could cry for someone I didn't Know....Didn't Know? We grew-up with her! "Yes, some things are worth getting your heart broken for. " -Sarah Jane Smith
I was just going through some of the replies and I'm not sure why this is marked as spam. I can't see any way to change the setting. :-( Anyway... Nicely said!
BBC America started "Breakfast with Baker", playing the 4th Doctor and Sarah stories (movie format). They came on-screen, and I thought "Wow, she looks so young and thin!", and then "God, I've gotten so old in the time." "Call me old girl again, and I'll spit in your eye!" -Sarah Jane Smith"
RIP Elisabeth Sladen. You were the first Doctor Who companion that I ever saw and will always be my favorite. "Don't forget me." "Sarah, I could never forget you."
My first Dr Who viewing was Tom Baker back in the early 80's; BBC wasn't in America then so it was only seen on PBS late on Sat. night; I fell in love at first glance with Sara Jane and eagerly watched every 4th Dr. Who I could find. Now my granddaughter is a Whovian and we spend hours together catching up on DVD's and Netflix. While my daughter's fave is Matt Smith and my granddaughter likes David Tennant, Tom Baker remains my favorite DR and of course My Sara Jane will always be the best companion! (no insult K9!) RIP Liz Sladen, live on Sara Jane, live forever Dr. Who!
David Tennant is the reason I started watching Dr Who in the first place. His acting and conviction to the character just catapulted me into the Dr Who universe! I'am a huge fan of the show! I found this very moving tribute to Elisabeth Sladen very engaging and well spoken by Mr. Tennant! I never watched Dr Who when i was a kid. I should of it looks like I missed a lot of cool adventures! Thank you for posting! My Sarah Jane indeed!
That's beautiful! Elisabeth Sladen and the show itself has touched so many people in a very personal way through the years. Elisabeth Sladen/Sarah Jane Smith a truly unique and wonderful woman. She's so missed by many people and was my first companion when I started watching Doctor Who all those years ago, and to this day, still the best. :-)
Those wonderful words were so true! I too grew up watching the Doctor back in the late 80's with my uncle Darryl. I am very glad that he gave me the chance to watch it, !
She was so beautiful, with all of that gorgeous hair, and was such a believable actress. Yes, it was a privilege to have made her acquaintance through the TV screen and through Doctor Who. RIP, Elisabeth Sladen.
Who wouldn't have quizzed Elisabeth on stories with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker? It's great David Tennant got to works with Elisabeth Sladen as he admired her from his childhood.
Although I have learned many things from Doctor Who, the greatest lesson will always be: Never give up on your dreams. Dreams do come true. Thank you Elisabeth for giving us such a wonderful Sarah Jane who we all fell in love with. Rest In Peace.
Very heartfelt and sincere words from David Tennant about Elisabeth Sladen. I remember her in much the same way but never got the chance to meet her regretfully. R.I.P Elisabeth.
I cried! R.I.P Elizabeth Sladen! you will always be a companion of the doctor and one of the best actors anyone has ever know! You have made every one happy :( You were my hero and forever will be. School reunion was the day I was happy and excited same with The stolen earth and Journey's end! R.I.P
David is so elegant in regards to Sarah Jane, I'm still crying. The admiration he spoke of her was fantastic. Gives room for thought, how few get that in their life. Wondering will anyone speak of me ? I love David even more now then ever. What a blessing, I just got the book, so the irony. Thxs so much for this privileged encounter they are to few that can state what needs to be said. Many blessings to David Tennant, God bless Elizabeth.
So wonderful that David Tennant did the forward for her book. He had the perfect experience of fan, fellow actor, and friend to bring across what a very special person Elizabeth Sladen was. I have her book, but can't bring myself to read it yet. It is that last new part of her that I have left to discover. Loved the episodes she did with Tennant and Matt Smith. School Reunion was heart wrenching!
I don't mind sharing that I cried when I listened to this video. I can't imagine how emotional it must have been for David, and the story he was relaying to us was truly from the heart. ☺
I was born in 1970, I remember Sarah Jane from the start (with Jon Pertwee- a fine doctor ) for several years I had a poster of The Tardis with her & Tom Baker as the Doctor. Any Doctor Who fan who grew up in the 70's loved her & K-9 :) I shed a tear when Elizabeth Sladen passed away. All of us had lost a cherished friend, a treasured moment from our past. All I can say is a heartfelt thank you to her for all she brought to us & to say the oft' used phrase 'gone too soon'... we will all miss you... x
The first episode of SJA was in 2007 and I remember 7 year old me would come from school and watch the show. Its 2023 and 17 years later I'm back to watching the first episode, how time flies is an understatement but she will always be the best Companion by far. Her legacy lives on. GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN ❤️❤️
A lovely pair; I feel privileged to have gotten to have seen them work together, and I love that they got the privilege of sharing each other's company as actors and friends as well. Every once in a while, if one is truly lucky, one meets one's heroes--and it turns out to be BETTER than one ever dreamed. Sure is nice to see it happen to people who deserve it.
What a fantastic commentary from David! Brought tears to my eyes as I remember liz Sladen in classic and new dr who and she was absolutely fantastic in both! I remember the words of Russell t Davies in the tribute show the bbc did when she passed "they say never work with your heroes, that person clearly wasn't talking about liz though! She was a true diamond"
How nice. Some people get to realise there dreams, eloquently expressed and you are right mr Tennant she was "my doctor's companion" you are my kids doctor and we watched together even if I had to work ( can't imagine how hard it was for them to wait) but we always watched together. RIP Sarah Jane
This literally made me cry, I always love to watch The Sarah Jane Adventures, but there always remains a twinge of sadness in my heart, realizing that this brilliant, wonderful woman is no longer with us. But, she will never EVER be forgotten, and I love her so much. To Elisabeth Sladen.
Having had the pleasure of meeting Lis several times, everything David says is true. Sweet, beautiful almost medicinal words. She was a genuinely wonderful and loved person. Such a tragedy she passed away...
i hadnt seen this video before today. ( June 2020 ) its yet another reason to love david tennant as the doctor! Tom, Baker was my first doctor and Sarah, my first companion. When she left the TARDIS for the last time, i had no idea that this was the norm for the doctor's companions. they come and go but they leave lasting impressions. i was thrilled when she returned in School Reunion and cried again when she left. thank you so much for posting this. it has brought back so many wonderful memories.
Elisabeth Sladen was my first TV-actress crush in childhood. Especially since Planet Of Evil which was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw. R.I.P. Liz.
My doctor was ten. But I remember watching the classical episodes and seeing SJ and her been my favourite out of everyone. I remember how excited I got when the SJA were announced and was keen to get home from school and watch them. Elisabeth Sladen's death was the first time I ever really cried over the death of someone famous. She was the first actress I ever truly mourned.
David you've reduced me to tears, that was so beautiful. If Liz was Here to hear this she would be so blessed and proud and would not have changed a minute of it :') Long live the doctor and Sarah Jane.smith Xxxxxxxxxxx
Yeah, I have always thought that Elisabeth Sladen/ Sarah Jane, was the one true bridge from Classic Who and New Who. She has so much history in this show, both as a Companion, guest star and her own successful spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures. Truly, no one has done more than she has in the Whoniverse and is recognized by most as being one of the most iconic characters ever on TV. :-)
Beautiful words, every one of them deserved. I have many fond memories watching Elisabeth Sladen back in the 70's and 80's. A life well spent ended to soon.
The first time I ever saw Doctor Who, it was with Tom Baker, and Elisabeth Sladen in "The Terror of the Zygons", and I loved the entire episode! I was hooked from word one, and marveled at the dynamic between the two characters.
Very lovely. Thank you David.
I don't mind sharing that I cried when I listened to this video. I can't imagine how emotional it must have been for David, and the story he was relaying to us was truly from the heart. ☺
I miss her... Rest In Piece Elisabeth Sladen :(
Thank you for putting this up, And an even bigger thank you to David Tennant for a warm and heartfelt tribute. Goodbye Sarah Jane
An moving tribute. Read by an fantasic actor for an eqauly amazing actress, Rest In Peace Elisabeth Sladen
The last picture is perfect for the moment.
David, you truly 'master' the written word, it was beautiful. Elizabeth, thank you. Never replace, always remembered. X
This is so beautiful! David, you're a class act. Elisabeth, you beautiful lady, God bless you.
Very beautiful dedication to her. She was always one of my favourite actors.
Beautiful! What a lovely, fitting tribute to such a wonderful lady.
Crying. What a magical moment for him. Thank you for sharing this.
Who wouldn't love this talented, beautiful and unique woman? She was literally one in one-hundred million...
Elisabeth Sladen was my first TV-actress crush in childhood. Especially since Planet Of Evil which was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw. R.I.P. Liz.
Yes. Through my whole adult life, I've carried a little torch for her.
Lovely tribute to the best companion ever.
Elisabeth was so wonderful. I miss her very much.
A beautiful tribute to a wonderful lady. ❤
Rest in piece Sarah Jane Smith/Elisabeth Sladen's :/ I'm still watching every episode of hers
well that made me cry for about 6 hours....xxx
Godd old Mr Tennat, hes always so charming and lovable too
Thanks for this. It was very touching to listen to him read the forward in his own voice.
Such lovely words, read in a genuine way.
If she had been still with us; the 50th anniversary show would have been even more awesome than it was...thank you Elizabeth Sladen for being you
Wonderful, made me cry.
What a beautiful, poignant, sad but sweet piece of audio. Incredibly moving.
Wonderful, thank you David !
Beautiful memories, both classy and warm people.
David you've reduced me to tears, that was so beautiful. If Liz was Here to hear this she would be so blessed and proud and would not have changed a minute of it :') Long live the doctor and Sarah Jane.smith Xxxxxxxxxxx
Me and the lads at school in the 70's had a real crush on her, she was gorgeous. God bless you Elisabeth.
Such a beautiful tribute from yet another brilliant Doctor.
I read this in Waterstones the other day and pretty much cried on the spot. Beautiful tribute.
Beautiful words, every one of them deserved. I have many fond memories watching Elisabeth Sladen back in the 70's and 80's. A life well spent ended to soon.
Thank you. This was so poignant, so touching. David Tennant makes you wish you could have met her too.
This made me cry and I'm glad it did, she deserves no less. RIP Liz and Sarah x
