I met Tom Baker in the late seventies and he was the perfect gentleman. He was signing books while wearing the Who costume in the height of the Australian summer. He was sweating profusely in the heat while wearing heavy wool, but he soldiered on and was kind and patient with the fans. I'll never forget that day and his characterization will always be the definitive WHO for me.
Still kills me that Jon Pertwee in the late 80's used to come to a convention near my relatives, often in full costume. Unfortunately, I was a little kid who had no idea what Doctor Who was in America, or what a convention was. I would have loved to have met him, he edges out Baker only slightly for my fave classic.
You're wrong there, Jody is the best doctor, and if you say otherwise you are racist. Just bear that in mind before you say statements like that in future. I hate Trump.
This is just “my take” of Tom Baker, whom I don’t know: Tom’s a master of revealing just enough of himself to never be pinned down. One feels they know him, without anyone (but perhaps those closest to him) really knowing him. A social escape artist (at least as a public figure) to the hilt. Very healthy boundaries. He found a way to keep his private life private, and for everyone to love him, and love his good natured charm and winking mysteriousness. As a fan, I say good for him!
How many of you saw Tom Baker as Rasputin in the movie about Czar Nicholas or as a funny character "Timberdoodle?" in one the later Chronicles of Narnia stories ?
"Let's say I'm optimistic about MY future, but I can't commit myself for humanity... they can be very, *very* ungrateful". This quote NEEDS to be included in one of Tom's future BF stories, if not on the series itself.

I adore the way Tom ends this interview. After Nick says "Let's get back to the TARDIS", Tom's response is just so magical. "Yes...yes, let's do that. Goodbye."
Lovely interview with a truely beautiful person. It's just a shame about the highly irritating video-effect/stuttering filter that whomever edited the video felt the need to slap on every few minutes for no good reason. Very jarring. He's the definitive doctor of the classic era , just like David is the definitive doctor of the revival. Both fantastic actors and two fantastically different and equally fitting performances.
He still has that wonderful melodic voice! At 86 he has more charisma that any number of Hollywood types put together. Ladies and Gentlemen - STAR QUALITY.
Wes Clark when he voiced the Bendu in Star Wars Rebels I remember being surprised how incredible he sounded, as if he hadn’t aged a single day. True lasting talent.
I grew up watching Doctor Who and Tom Baker will always be my doctor. Forty years ago my mom and I saw him at a convention. We went to a lunch where he was to be in the same room. We got there last and there was only one table left. They said you can sit here. In walks Tom and sits down next to me. I never took one bite. I could not believe my luck. He was very humble and could not believe that we had come all the way from Oklahoma, just to see him. Later on that day he was out by the pool and we got to take pictures and I have a picture of me and Doctor who! Such an awesome experience.
Well I never heard that of that 1 before but he does mention Cybermen in "The Invasion Of Time" and if that a Lost Episode Script there is another 1 Colin Baker story "The Children Of January" which was originally intended for season 23 and season 1 of the Lost Stories which was never made I also mention this because after buying the two new lost stories it sounded that they were wrapping things up in The Lost Stories Department. So the only Cyberman Story that wasn't made was Genesis Of The Cyberman Series 19 as far as I know.
Yes I know that but season 19 some stories were written for Tom Baker then changed to Peter Davison depending where they were in the scripting process. Anyway my point was this is as far as I know the only unmade cyberman script from the classic era
And it turns out to be the original version of revenge of the cyberman now will this be modified because elisabeth sladen and ian marter have died or not
My Doctor ,the First Doctor i ever watched, And the only Actor to play the role for 7 Years , most only Play the role for 3 to 4 years , but for me he is the Doctor. Brililant
I strongly believe that Tom is one of the sweetest guys on the planet and does what he does because he loves it. Also I’m glad to hear he doesn’t intend on dying anytime soon haha
I really don't mean to sound morbid, but I feel so worried seeing how old poor Tom is now. I'm sure he's still got plenty of years left, but I can't help but worry. I'm glad he got a cameo in The Day Of The Doctor, and for his work on Scratchman, and of-course, all he's done for Big-Finish. But, Seriously; The day Tom Baker passes, I think every Whovian will collectively miss a beat.
I reckon Tom Baker's passing will be treated like those of Bruce Forsyth and Cilla Black. There will be tons of tribute shows on the TV, with talking heads from people who knew him. Maybe even a repeat on BBC2 of a classic Doctor Who Tom Baker serial. Hopefully he's in this world for a lot longer yet though.
@@CineScarborough I hope he gets a much better response than that, I'm sure someone at the BT Tower in London will oblige and though talking heads is a standard interview model I think there should be something different for him, hopefully he will transform into his younger self, sit up abruptly and offer those near him a jelly baby whilst quipping "Oh no, not me - ' I AM the Doctor' (cue his deep chuckle)
He maybe getting old but that voice still has it rich fruity tones , at Christmas last year listens to him read a Christmas carol , magnificent, as far as I am concerned he is THE DR his appearance in the 50th anniversary and again (SPOILERS ) in shads was great every where I go I still wear my 13ft Tom baker scarf
when Tom Baker dies I shall be heartbroken. Same with David Attenborough. 2 men who meant so much to me as a kid growing up. One to do with fantasy and adventure and the other to do with science and natural history. I shall be lost without them.
John Pertwee was my first Doctor but Tom Baker was by far my favorite Doctor . I grew up in the 70s watching Dr Who every Saturday night on PBS . My Late Dad was a fan too :)
Jon was my fav; once Tom came by I gradually lost interest even though Tom is fantastic in interviews. He has said he never played The Doctor instead played himself.
I can't believe he is that age. In the early 80's when I discovered Doctor Who I fell in love with him. Now that I'm 52 and know he is 86 and my mother is a mere 79 and my father would have been 80. It's kind of weird that I had a crush on someone older than my own parents.
Tom went out of his way to distance himself from the role for many years but this changed after Jon Pertwee died and he became the last of the original 4 who survived. He warmed up to his past far greater after that.
Met Tom Baker at Longleat years ago when they had the Doctor who down there and he gave our kids jelly babies and signed a drawing our son made of him, lovely man he is the best
Tom Baker is, was, and always will be, the quintessential Doctor Who character for all time. He could have played the character on screen literally for decades, and yet still would have seemed perfect for the role. No one else who played the role before him, or since his departure, even come close. Bless him.
What I wouldn't give to meet Tom Baker. I've remember being a little boy in the 80s and my dad watching doctor who. I'm now 36 years old and have been a fan of Doctor Who my entire life. I've been all over America and the world, I've been in the Army, been to war in Iraq and lived, I've been able to be there for the birth of my Son and STILL being able to meet Tom Baker would be the GREATEST moment of my life.
What an absolute legend. I love this man. Both him and Brain Blessed, true characters and seemingly wonderful people. We'll NEVER see their like again.
I have never wanted to be an old man more than seeing Tom there. I just want to be Tom so bad! Imagine the stories he has, the loving fans. The word is his oyster.
My introduction to Tom Baker was as Puddleglum. I didn't discover Who until 2005 with Eccleston. But the Doctor for me was first a Marsh-Wiggle. And Absolutely superb at that.
I met my hero, Tom himself on the first TV series I did way back in 2001. He was so witty, funny and would launch into Shakespeare quotes between takes. He said to me afterwards good luck to you son just go for it in whatever you do next.
I'm sure he stated quite dismissively in some other interview he hadn't any of the Dr's costume, he doesn't let the truth get in the way of a good yarn tho hehe (and we love him for it)
For any new fans... Tom, after 7 years of playing the Doctor from 1974 to 1981, was 'persuaded' to step down. At the time of the 20th Aniversary ("The Five Doctors" - 1983, just 2 years after 'stepping down'), the pain of that was still fresh in his mind so when approached to be part of it he told them to stuff it (or more obtuse words to that effect), so they had to use unaired footage of him in the special instead.
He may be 86 years old, but he's still got that same mischievous grin and youthful glint in his eye. Honestly, it's quite hard to tell just where the Fourth Doctor ends and Tom Baker begins. Tom Baker is Doctor Who.
His voice still sounds pretty much the same .

Tom was the best Dr Who, met him in 1979 when I was only 9 years old in Woolworths in Lincoln and he signed my book, such a fabulously warm gentleman.
He didn't want to speak to me when I saw him in a pub. I got fuck off I'm having a pint. But I still love him to bits. Thanks Tom for the memories
Like that script he's holding "DOCTOR WHO: The LOST EPISODES - Return of the Cybermen"
Can't wait to hear that one.
Well spotted! I'm looking forward to it as well now! :)
Alex Lazebat I thought Genesis of the Cybermen would have been a Fifth Doctor Story if it got made
Yes I know that but season 19 some stories were written for Tom Baker then changed to Peter Davison depending where they were in the scripting process. Anyway my point was this is as far as I know the only unmade cyberman script from the classic era
And it turns out to be the original version of revenge of the cyberman now will this be modified because elisabeth sladen and ian marter have died or not
Tom has a unique "narrative" voice as did Christopher Lee and Michael Hordern .
and Liam Neeson...!
I would love it if Tom baker teamed up with. Tim Trelor the 3rd & 4th Doctor, in a 4 disc event with the origional unit master and cyber man
"Do they still creep up?"
"Yes"
*chuckles* "not for me they don't"
My Doctor ,the First Doctor i ever watched, And the only Actor to play the role for 7 Years , most only Play the role for 3 to 4 years , but for me he is the Doctor. Brililant
Tom was my first, he will always have a special place in my heart.
It's amazing, he really hasn't aged a day. He looks like cheeky Tom Baker in an older body. What a wonderful way to go about life.
I strongly believe that Tom is one of the sweetest guys on the planet and does what he does because he loves it.
Also I’m glad to hear he doesn’t intend on dying anytime soon haha
And when he does, hes got his tombstone ready and waiting.
@@zybch TOMstone
We Love you TOM ! I screamed out loud “ ITS TOM BAKER “ when I heard him speak behind Matt Smith at the end of “ The Day of The Doctor “ 😂
In the sliver of time in the universe that the earth has existed, we get to be alive in the same time that Tom Baker is here.
Tom Baker was my Doctor. Such a legend, such a one-off. Hope you live forever Tom!
he's such a lovely man, may he keep living, I think he is very much the best docter, because he was just his lovely british eccentric self.
And shed a tear
Every Whovian will miss two beats.
You can see Tom's eyes glistening when the interview start. Still young at heart. Nothing but love and respect for him.
when Tom Baker dies I shall be heartbroken. Same with David Attenborough. 2 men who meant so much to me as a kid growing up. One to do with fantasy and adventure and the other to do with science and natural history. I shall be lost without them.
He's not my Doctor, but he still is THE Doctor. This man deserves a knighthood. He's a treasure.
Captain Kirk can't hold a candle to Tom Baker's dramatic pauses!😀
Better voice as well
Now you said that I really wish we could see Shatner and Baker having a conversation over space and time.
Captain Redbeard Rum could
Apples and oranges...two legends need not compete, for artistic genius comes in many flavors.
"Sir Tom Baker"
Who wouldn't want that?!
HaB22 ok I change my mind
My favorite Tom Baker moment was an interview where he was talking about someone who had passed away and he just dropped "He's dead now you know"
Lovely man, wonderful to see him. Happy birthday to you, Tom Baker!
What a grand voice he has, so very rich.
I love that even at 86 years old he still has that voice and enough energy to keep kicking.
Tom went out of his way to distance himself from the role for many years but this changed after Jon Pertwee died and he became the last of the original 4 who survived. He warmed up to his past far greater after that.
I remember bumping into Tom at the cinema in the seventies, he was wearing his Doctor Who scarf, he obviously relished being the doctor.
Met Tom Baker at Longleat years ago when they had the Doctor who down there and he gave our kids jelly babies and signed a drawing our son made of him, lovely man he is the best
He's so funny I don't think he realises how good he is,he is the Doctor for me end of story.
I saw him in that role after I had seen him as Dr.Who. I agree. He was great in that role.
What an absolute legend Tom Baker is and Nicholas Briggs too. The work you have out in for Big Finish and the main show deserves recognition.
I met my hero, Tom himself on the first TV series I did way back in 2001. He was so witty, funny and would launch into Shakespeare quotes between takes. He said to me afterwards good luck to you son just go for it in whatever you do next.
“I have no intention of dying.” HOLY SHIT I CACKLED OUT LOUD IN A SILENT LAB
I loved tom baker as the doctor, but he will always be in my memory as captain redbeard rum in blackadder
That laugh he has. Just makes you smile every time.
He was the first Doctor I watched, on PBS stations here in New Hampshire in the US. Totally thrilled when he showed up as the Curator!
I'm sure he stated quite dismissively in some other interview he hadn't any of the Dr's costume, he doesn't let the truth get in the way of a good yarn tho hehe (and we love him for it)
This man was and IS soooo loved as a Doctor. The kids adored him, I adore him. And he's still kicking it even at this advanced age.
Instantly hitting like before the video started just because it's Tom Baker!
Absolutely wonderful and still with his wit
This is my favorite person on Earth. No clue why, he just is. 1975 until now he always beings a smile to my face. Thank you.
