- In a previous video I talked about how some people turn into ghouls, what their new lives were like in the post-war world and their potential for immortality thanks to radiation. However, this isn't entirely true. While they do have a unique mutation allowing their bodies to be healed by radiation, their brains are destroyed by it and it’s that destruction, along with a few other things, causing them to go feral. Feral ghouls, also known as feral necrotic post-humans or simply ferals, are ghouls that have lost their ability to reason and according to a large percentage of survivors all ghouls will inevitable go feral, and to a certain extent that is true. Numerous attempts have been made to figure out how to prevent feralization or cure it entirely, but all efforts have failed…

My head canon for why some ferals have been friendly with humans is that some parts of their brain could be more intact than others. I.e: while they are incapable of forming coherent thoughts and speech they can still recognise the difference between a hostile and friendly encounter.

Feral Ghouls remind me of the dark seekers from I Am Legend. How they just gather in the darkest corners of subways 🚊 and ruined buildings. They just charge at you and it’s pretty creepy. Some locations have an army of those monsters. The cherry on top is that we have a German shepherd fighting with us lol 😂.

diminished intellect in pop-culture, a human turned in some way feral only has the tools of biting,
hitting and clawing at you, so you always put them in numbers in a confined space, possibly with bad visibility,
so you get overwhelmed. One or few out in the open are usually treated as a non-issue.

It would be funny if the mysterious chem being used was literally just Rad Away, with the inhaler version perhaps just being easier to administer.
It would make sense that ghouls never bothered using Rad Away as they never suffer (additional) negative effects of radiation sickness. They also seem to have a higher resistance to chems, as seen with Ultrajet, as regular Jet is apparently not particularly effective on ghouls.
So maybe the mysterious chem really is just concentrated Rad Away, too potent for humans but it purges excess radiation from ghouls to prolong their sanity.
It’s basically the equivalent of going hollow in dark souls without the whole dying multiple times and losing their souls.
Kinda, only real difference is that hollows retain the memory of what their occupation is, guards keep patrolling clerics keep preaching etc
Coop's drug could be rad away for the radiation and mentats to stay "sane", mixed together.
It's gotta be some kind of vault tech thing they're going to explain later mixed with rad away they can't leave it ambiguous like that and if they do rip the continuity

I mean, for example. If real life had 'lore' about Rabies being an incurable, always lethal disease, does that mean that one South American guy who survived "breaks continuity"? (Also, I think you mean canon, but that's not important)
My guess would be a mix of ultrajet and some other chems, as ultrajet was designed by a ghoul to be more a potent jet for ghouls. Jet has also been known to been sold in small containers like seen in the show with the inhaler being separate from it. What else would be in it to help keep him alive and not feral, I have no idea.

Your explanation is why I thought that the serum Thaddeus took can't be the same as what the Ghoul is taking. Whatever the Ghoul is taking does not make ghouls better. In fact they still continue to deteriorate. So I think it may be RadX to slow down him absorbing radiation and won't go feral quickly. I think Thaddeus took something more notorious like FEV.

I heard people saying it could also be the Healing Factor Serum from fallout 76. The chicken doctor did say he sold serums, but most likely he’s a ghoul and healed through radiation like Cooper does. We also saw a super mutant hand so could be FEV, who knows 🤷♂️

@@kingofravens215 probably not considering how much it changes their bodies and likely the actual physical state of their brains, not just mental. Like their brains are probably irreperably damaged, and even if you could heal them it'd basically just be them waking up witb total amnesia or an infant because it'd be equivalent to just plopping a brand new brain in.

That depends if the Institute was blown up or survived. But considering the BOS airship is seen in the TV show, I would assume that the Institute was destroyed. And if you destroy the Institute, well Virgil hates the Sole Survivor. So, I really doubt that even if given the necessary equipment he would ever be willing to do so, considering the Sole Survivor who brought him the sample to turn him from super mutant to human also was the one who destroyed his home.

There's also more tragic tales in Fallout 4, where a person has witnessed their family going feral.
Then I guess the Gorski cabin is the hangout for slumbering ghouls,
since Mister Gorski in all his wisdom did crack open a mini nuke and the cellar is still irradiated 200 years later.
I haven't visited Boston Airport before the Brotherhood takes it, but I assumed that the fleeing ghouls weren't feral, but the Brotherhood soldiers didn't care to tell the difference.
you didn't mention new vegas "come Fly with me" mission? there are feral that being kept by the ghouls too.
You asked for reasons Feral's might occasionally protect/work with humans... well in Fallout, it's usually either Atom's will or the influence of Ug-Qualtoth - I mean, despite what Radking would claim, Atom is a lie, but if Ug-Qualtoth deems you worthy, like a Dunwich, then you can except their true children to protect you (or so the table top game would have you believe)
Atom could be like the choas gods, just forming from all the people praying.

You know... Hancock in Fallout 4 says he took some drug and turned into a ghoul but he never explained what the drug was. It's not impossible that it was some of that anti-feral copium which Cooper Howard inhales in the show.

It might be a Fallout version of Krokodil. Think about it; a degenerative state, blacked out eyes, raspy voice, all trademarks of Krokodil. Ghouls also are in a degenerative state, and carry flush-eyes, so it's either the weed I ate talking or that this might be an explanation to what happened to Hancock.

You know in the next Fallout game it would be interesting if they added a ghoul companion(most likely) and encorporated the feralizatuon into the companion's quest. Maybe not to main quest. But the fighting the ghoul is trying to resist. His/her "time" is coming and his/her struggle to maintain active consciousness.

Hey Synonymous, great video. I would really like to see a video on the lore of all the different chems if you haven't already, especially the Med-Tek ones. Things like the experiments they were facilitating on the public by selling Mentats as candy is really interesting and vile, there's a lot of good lore surrounding the various drugs created both before and after the war.
Personally I believe that all Ghouls have a sorta-limit to how much Radiation that can absorb before turning Feral. (Exception being the Sentient Glowing Ones.) The idea being that Ghouls *can* be around Radiation but if they remain for far too long then the Radiation will eventually rot their Brains.
Not a fan of this new “Anti-Feral” Drug introduced by the Show.
Its said in the games that ghouls heal from rads. So i think the "anti-feral med" is just rads
I'm more in the camp of the pre Bethesda version of Ghouls going feral because of normal ( as best to describe it) psychological damage of long-term isolation. It makes even the ghoul's immortality have a catch that's mundane rather than make them just radiation induced zombies.

@@xSpecialist7 think of routines and how bored we are even in groups. Plus was FEV anywhere near them in great density when they turned. As that's another factor. If they mutated to FEV during ghoulificaction it does effect the change. Those that are feral don't have regenerating skin or bodies. Fev exposed ghouls have mostly intact yet withered skin. There's also the timetable of 200 years we have to take into account.

Well I'm guessing that anti-feralization drug is mix of Radaway with either Jet, Jet Fuel, Ultra Jet, Psychojet, Buffjet, or Addictol.
I hate the plotlines in 3 and 4 that make humans out to be bad for banning ghouls from their settlement. Like it’s somehow wrong to ban a group who could at any point turn feral and maul you from living near you and your family.

My thoughts on the new ghoul drug is maybe its a last resort kinda thing like you can definitely get bye without it but once you start going feral it helps stave off the final part of feralization

Given that the ghouls huff the chem I believe it's a combination of Radaway and Jet.
Imagine the Fallout Show Writers were creative, and would have made it so we learn Walton Ghoulggins Name by him sucumbing to Radiation Poisoning and uttering his Name uncontrollably.
They removed the RadAway from the Label because RadAway gives you the Runs. Imagine being locked in Place for Years, pissing and shitting yourself.

Call me naive, but i just can't get behind the idea that all ghouls are a ticking time bomb and will eventually go feral no matter what 🤷♂️ I don't think there's anywhere near enough research or evidence for the in game people to say that with certainty. i really do think that and the idea that they're brain eating zombies are just supposed to be an in-game version of essentially racism.
Bethesda is known for not having the GREATEST writing and for retcons, but at this point, we have Billy the ghoul kid who was both isolated and probably severely limited in energy intake not become feral, we have Hancock who despite not having anything to do with radiation, became functionally identical to every other ghoul out there and not feral, we have glowing ones like Jason Bright who are literal conduits of radiation and yet are still not feral, and we have ghouls that have been alive prior to the war and not feral despite being around all the radiation or isolation whereas others that go feral in only a few days. To me, that shows it's not a guarentee.
I think the drug that Cooper is taking in the show is Ultrajet. So far, jet and jet-related compounds are the most common inhalants in the game. Jet also "slows down time" (aka, is a downer) and the guys that sell it to Cooper seem baked af, itd make sense that they're taking jet, and making new batches. If Ultrajet only started in favor 3, it'd make sense that it is still a bit of a rarity. Also, when Lucy tries to tranq him, it has no effect and he says he does way too many drugs. It'd make sense that a standard downer wouldn't work on him because as Argyle says, ghouls have resistances to jet.
I do think the genetics and radiation play a part though, like you said. i think genetics can help determine if you become a ghoul at all, like how Trash in FNV was unable to, and then the radiation can cause the Feralization, which is why Cooper eats and other civilized ghouls do as well.
The Ghoul is a mix of Hancock from 4 and Raul the Ghoul from NV. Chems and tude

I'd bet money that they changed the bags because the idea of a ghoul using rad-away makes 0 sense. Why if a ghoul is healed or is immune to the negative effects need to then "away" those effects? It doesn't make any sense and that's why it's only ever referred to as "vials". It's show lore to humanize Cooper and that's it and I'm fine with that.
But what about Insane Survivors from Vault 106 ?

I have a theory that the ghoul medicine that the ghoul takes is radaway mixed with mentats, because mentats helps with the intelligence and radaway helps with radiation

Ghouls don't actually ever turn feral though, and Karee says that due to the lack of proper direct evidence be it the player seeing it, anyone witnessing/observing it happen, and no real solidly documented record of it happening
There's been at least 5 canon games (or 6 if fallout 76 counts as canon) in the franchise 3 (or 4) of which are packed full of lore and none of it says in a factual confirming way that Ghouls turn feral.
However there's enough lore to more likely suggest humans that turned into Feral Ghouls were Feral the moment they turn into Ghouls, so not only does there seem to be some unknown chance of someone becoming a Ghoul via radiation exposure and/or whatever else causes it, but also an unknown chance when they become a Ghoul for them to either be a Feral Ghoul or a Ghoul with their mind entirely intact, but seemingly neither ever "turning" into the other with whatever they became being permanent and unable to cross the line that separates them.
Also fairly certain the show isn't canon anymore, pretty sure it was decanonized a while ago by todd howard and series writers themselves some months ago, probably sometime before or after this video was made because some of the content or lore presented in the show contradicted some solid previously established lore and created unfixable continuity errors.
All though if it was decanonized after this video was released, then Karee can't really blame you for using it when creating this lore vid, buuuut it would have been better to wait it out and see if Bethesda kept the show canon or not before using it as material in lore videos. (that is only if Karee remembers correctly that the show was decanonized*)

I remember the first time playing fallout 3 and seeing ghouls run at me was terrifying They look scarier than fallout 4 ghouls... Not all have lost their ability to reason The intimidation perk works although kind of doesn't count because you're holding a Glock to their head😅

There might be other factors at play. Maybe Oswald has genes that resist brain decay or his position of leader of a pack of ghouls gives him the drive to stay un-feral.
