      I mean the first game fleshed out the known Mario universe and I love it for that. We now know that the average Mario desert is called Dry Dry Desert, it introduced Toad Town as the Mushroom Kingdom capital and stuff like that. And with all that being covered, the sequels go wild

      @TheQuashingoftheTub it's truly beautiful
      This is the first playthrough I've actually used the sound effect badges which adds a whole new comical layer to it all, especially since I frequently accidentally hit b after dialogue
      Like imagine you're an actual mafia mob boss and this random man somehow makes it to your headquarters, walks right up to you, and asks for an expensive blimp ticket
      Impressed by the pure balls of the man to do such a thing, you send him on an errand to prove if he's worthy
      and the SECOND you're done talking, he slams an entire hammer the same size as him onto the the floor and it makes a comical BOING sound

    I used to play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door a ton throughout the years, even recently, so I can confirm a few things with the items and badges in the original;
    1. Enemies actually hold items fairly commonly in the original. Sometimes you won't see it much, but other times it actually happens quite a bit in the original too.
    2. The stuff with enemies getting the effects of badges and holding them in battle was in the original too. Badges were a lot rarer to see them hold, especially with certain badges, but I probably see a dozen or so different enemies in every playthrough I do that end up holding some kind of badge, even when just regularly playing the game.
    Sadly I can't afford to get the remake yet, but it really does look absolutely amazing! I still can't believe we finally have a remake of Thousand Year Door after all of these years, and I can't believe its just as amazing as ever, possibly even better!
    Thanks for taking a bit of your time to read this, I hope everyone here has a great day!

    I'm loving it too, but there is one nitpick I have that I'm surprised you didn't mention, and it's that unlike the original, you can't skip through dialog that you haven't seen before in each save file. This means whenever you're forced into a tutorial for something you're fully familiar with, you can't just mash B and get to the end, you have to deal with the entire conversation. It's not game breaking, but it is mildly annoying.

    As someone that’s on Chapter 7 and has played through the original numerous times:
    -Some of the QoL added has been very nice, even if not all are ultra useful to me in particular
    -30 fps IS noticeable and has specifically increased guard/super guard timings
    -Not being able to mash through text and the text speed being generally slow has made a lot of the intermission/lore sections feel VERY sluggish. No joke you will be pressing a or b for over 5 minutes simply because each text box has to fully complete before the next can slowly start up. It’s going to add like an hour to the glitchless speedruns
    -The 15 item inventory QoL loses a lot of value when you realize the strange sack on floor 50 of the pit now only gives 5 more inventory slots to match the total 20 you’d have after getting it in the original. Kinda lowers the excitement when you only increase your inventory by 33% instead of 100%
    -As a long time player it’s a bit sad that every star piece/shine Sprite/item /badge is in the exact same spot. There’s not really any new discovery aspect for us other than some minor things
    -Some very fun/neat animations, my personal new favorite being when using Flurrie’s gale on the Punis midfight with the Jabbis. Def use her in there to see what I mean
    -The First Attack badge being swapped from a 1bp to a 0bp cost, essentially turning it from a choice to use it to a QoL, is very welcome

I’ve talked to her before about how paper Mario used to be better and such but she liked TOK a lot so she disregarded my comments. I showed her this remake but never told her it was a remake. She started playing today still thinking it’s a new game (Nintendo’s marketing ploy worked) and it is fascinating to watch her play it through that lense. Been watching a relative play the game, and there are some UX problems that weren't in the original:
    - Can't insta-skip dialogue by pressing B!
    - Before an enemy is starting it's attack, it waits for the star power meter to finish animating!
    These add extra waiting time and doesn't feel good.
    That said, everything else is pretty great. You can even skip cooking. Shame about the 60FPS, Hope they can optimize it, maybe for support on a next-gen console.

      It's less about optimization and more about power. Mario RPG really struggled to keep 60fps on Switch, so they went for a different solution this time focusing on consistent reduced frame time latency. I imagine in the future both will get backwards compatibly patches as it's not the hardest thing to do it they are using the solution I suspect

      @@videogollumer You definitely can, everyone can. The jump from 30 to 60 is jarringly obvious after 30 seconds of actually paying attention, but it's very true in this game due to the paper aesthetic and the Switch's poor aliasing that would helped smooth that out, even if it stayed 30. There's not a lot of extrapolating frames to go around, and the paper backing gets smeared due to the way sprites have to be drawn. I was honestly looking forward to what speedrunners would do with the remake but something like this will make it significantly slower than just running the original even after they get a chance to see what glitches still work and if there are new ones to exploit.

    This game is so fun you guys! I have a feeling I'm going to beat it over the weekend that's how much I am loving it. However, if I did have to throw ONE, just one bit of criticism towards the remake though. The nostalgic tunes badge feels like false advertising. It switches some of the new tracks back to the gamecube ones...but not ALL of them. Without going into spoilers of course, there's an intense moment towards the end of chapter 2 where you are forced to listen to the new track, no matter if you have the nostalgic tunes badge on and that new track, to me anyway, is inferior to the original. When it comes to new character themes, that's totally different and I welcome that change! But things like not being able to listen to the old partner tutorial track, for example, does bug me as again. I liked that track better then the new one and as far as I know, there is no way to change it back. Is anyone else annoyed by this or am I being a grouchy old man?

      Yeah, the removal of the ability to mash through text, coupled with the removal of the ability to scroll back through text, is putting a bit of a damper on an otherwise perfect experience. Also the battle menus are a bit sluggish too. Don’t like how you have to wait for your stars to fill the meter before continuing the fight and how there’s a slight delay when selecting, like, jump and then trying to select which jump you’d like to use from the submenu. Bit worried that these won’t be patched because apparently Sticker Star, Color Splash, and TOK all didn’t let you skip through text or cutscenes.

      Hooktail is now properly gendered with she/her pronouns by every single person who refers to her.
      Koops no longer says "We thought your game was over!" when reuniting with his dad, he doesn't even allude to death directly at all in that scene. Which is weird because in other spots the game has no problem mentioning death.
      The Jabbi tribe are more explicitly Working With The X-Nauts rather than just taking advantage of the chaos to expand their territory.
      And of course, the game says Cleared after every boss, and not End Of Chapter.

    There is one thing I don't think I'll be able to tolerate in further repeat playthroughs and that's the fact you can't press a mid dialogue to make all the text pop up so I can just skip through the text. like it's kinda nice to be given a pace to read at, but when I'm just going for gameplay in my next playthrough, the slow text is gonna be obnoxious. It feels like something they could patch, but I also don't think this is a game they'll patch at all. The time savers this game gives feel like they get immediately removed by the forced dialogue scroll and I really don't understand why they took away the ability to skip through, it makes an extremely replayable game so much less replayable. I'm not sure if I'm just remembering it wrong, but the time between actions feels longer too, like it's waiting for all the Star Points to fly into the bar when it didn't before, but it's definitely not as noticeable as the dialogue if it even is different. For context, I love (or feel neutral) almost if not all other changes the remake made. But it makes the quality of life feel like it's just giving you the time you lost from all these other things taking slightly longer constantly and I'll probably just end up going back to gamecube for future playthroughs unless people make mods for the game that "fix it" which I really don't think I should have to do

      @@RJS2003 Honestly I'm not smart enough to truly know 1:1 translation, I hear some people arguing that the OG translation makes vivian more of a girly femboy, I've heard arguments that it implies she's trans, IDRK but either way its still a bold move on Nintendo's part, especially for a mario game of all things. And even if she's just a femboy... I mean, a boy dressing up all girly and stuff is more "tolerable"? That also doesn't seem like something that THOSE individuals would be celebrating either, just seems like a desperate grab for straws/picking a "lesser evil" for them.
      As far as this version goes though (and I'm taking this one as being "definitive"), its blatantly obvious. Sure some crossdressers/femboys whatever may describe themselves with feminine terms, but I've never heard a sentence like "I realized I was their sister instead of their brother" from them before. It's a nice and still relatively subtle way of revealing it.
      Bottom line though is vivian is just great. It's not like she's a character purely made to push a message or appeal to diversity, she feels genuine and is just really likable. If people are hell bent on fighting over it that's on them, I just like the character at the end of the day and found this a really bonkers decision on Nintendo's part.

It was one of my favorite games growing up, I had a cousin who I competed with who can beat it first, he did but unfortunately I’ve yet to beat paper Mario TTYD. So I’m thinking next week, I’m going to buy a switch and paper Mario and finally beat this game once and for all.

  • @UltimaKeyMaster
    @UltimaKeyMaster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I will say the changes aren't all perfect, and teeeeeeeeechnically it's mostly a frame rate thing but not what you expect.
    It's not that Action Commands are annoying, not at all. They're just as easy to do, I can Superguard perfectly.
    But it's that the combat is less overall snappy. Sometimes you get a hitch in animation between turns so your menu takes longer to pop up, the menus take longer to transition because they want to weirdly accentuate every press with a harder sound like the newer games, so your menuing takes longer than it should which adds up fast. Also, with the stage hazards they give a lot more warning of when one is about to drop which tells you who's the target and...aesthetically that makes zero sense, it just serves to make it easier for you to dodge something about to hit you. I get they wanted that to not catch you fully off-guard *but the entire purpose of the audience is to catch you off-guard.* Why water down your own unique mechanic that no other games has ever done?
    And there's some quirks with old animations that are *less* detailed than the original. Like say the Fuzzy boss in Chapter 1. When you beat it and it and the group scatters outside the playable area, they actually faded into the lack of lighting beyond the playable zone like they were actually fading away. They don't fade away at all anymore, they're still perfectly lit and that kinda bothers me.
    So for every positive quality of life feature, there's a couple things I could equally nitpiick that also aren't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. As such I don't think the remake 100% replaces the original, but it's definitely a good second playthrough for fans and easily recommendable to newcomers.
    Those item changes alone, *chef's kiss* I love it.
    Oh, and speaking of nitpicks, whoever made it so you can't button mash dialogue you "haven't seen yet" I wanna slap with a fish. Because that's stupid. IT'S A TEXT BOX, LET ME MASH if I don't wanna bother Besides, you gave me a Story reminder button with my partners, I can't just forget what I'm doing anymore! Hell you made it the same button as MegaMan Battle Network's help button so I extra can't forget that.
