I started removing all raw footage and completed video projects ever since your first Digital Minimalism video. The disk space is wayyy easier to manage and it really is useless to have hanging around.
I could understand deleted unused footage but I’d keep all my finished videos on my own archive drive just in case google does something weird or hackers.
Ahh...here's a great example of information that is left out of a story or the fact that someone will need to read between the lines in order to fill the story in… The reason that Kraig is able to get rid of his RAW files is because what he isn't working for SOMEONE WHO IS ACTUALLY PAYING HIM MONEY - most of Kraigs’ videos are weddings and his own channel, so at the end of the day, the only person that Kraig needs to answer to is Kraig. He can do whatever wants because he doesn't have to turn over the footage to someone else, if necessary. In order for any workflow to work in a Real World scenario you have to consider the end means and what you are trying to accomplish. In this case, Kraig is only mentioning Wedding Film School, Wedding couples and his TH-cam channel. Kraig is not letting people fully know what he does with his CLIENT footage - should he have any. Do I consider Wedding Couples clients? Of course, but 99% of Wedding Couples aren’t going to want their footage back once that project is done - they just want the end product…so What about any outside Commercial Clients? The ones that actually are paying 5/10/15K for projects… This is just one point of many which Kraig has failed to mention to everyone when considering this particular workflow. Kraig has an “excuse” section of this video devoted to talking to/about people who sound like they are hobbyists out there - people who may edit on their own free time for their own personal use and who just leave footage sitting around and don't do anything with it ….but you know what? I have called a CLIENT ARCHIVE and its exactly what it sounds like - an Archive….Of My Clients Work - all 16TB of it….backed up on 2 towers - that’s 32TB of backed up footage…JUST THE FOOTAGE. Would I love to get rid of this? YES, of course I would - they are bulky machines that just sit and take space up in my studio but I’ve had at least 10 instances where my Commercial Clients who paid large amounts of money wanted to go back and do additional projects for more fees from my original footage. Because I had my RAW footage, I not only was able to say yes to my Clients and keep my business running but I avoided needing to explain to my Clients why I dont have the footage they paid for. If you are in the business of making money for your work and it involves TH-cam, then this model would work fine….in the meantime, for people who need real World application - please update your video to show how you get rid of your RAW files in a way that you can re-access them for actual Clients that are not getting married.
Little known tip: Google Drive also has a business account, called "G Suite" and it costs 10-20$ per month, per user, minimum 5 users... EXCEPT! Google doesn't enforce the minimum user. There is a subreddit about "Digital Hoarding" haha and they often show screenshots of 10-50 TB of data uploaded. Something to look into, for anyone interested :)
Okay so definitively makes me clear up my laptop as soon as I get home. The whole about intentionality must be something that you really want to take to higher levels, you really took your time to answer the questions on the last podcast episode, which I personally liked
I love your aesthetic, your work and your principles. Been following you for about a year and I always love your videos! Some of your videos have really stuck with me (Japan, Seattle) for both your beautiful cinematography and the unique pacing of your edits. Thanks for always being an inspiration! I'm a big believer in digital minimalism as well. We leave footprints all over the internet, but it's nice to keep our personal workspaces as streamlined as possible.
When I edit i always go through and make selects and then cut that timeline down to my film. Might be interesting to export and upload the unedited selects as a private video to yt so its more malleable for future use.
Hey Kraig, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. They're super helpful and I've implemented quite a few of the minimalist ideas you've shared. Love the style of your videos too, they're just super clean and simple and calming to watch. Keep up the great work! Also looking forward to hearing how you do quickbooks!
I burn off all my projects onto bluray once the final edit is completed. I've had cases where I need to refer back to some footage and it's been super useful. I get the point of this video tho.
I have a really bad habit of keeping raw footage. I’ve got footage from a short film I shot 5 years ago and it just sits on a hard drive in my office and is never touched. I’m inspired now to clean it up and get rid of these hard drives. Every piece of wedding footage I’ve ever shot is saved on a hard drive and I’m constantly having to move stuff to a new drive. It’s pointless now that I think about it. Great video Kraig!
i just upload RAW footage to Google Photos and then forget about it, unlimited storage so I will never run out (not full quality but good enough for what I would ever need it for) and then every now and then I can go back if needed.
sry if i missed something on your instagram, but that's clearly your apartment? on your podcast you said you had become a nomad, and that you no longer had an apartment, and you even had to set up your address to be elsewhere. so either your "nomad" lifestyle was just miscommunication, or was it just fake hype? don't wanna be rude or anything, im really just confused...
I too am confused regarding the return to the New York apartment for this video and after going to the Volvo event in Sweden. He said he was "leaving New York" before going to Sweden. Did that mean leaving India? She obviously has re-arranged the apartment to suit herself. But now he's back. That's not being a "nomad".
I have to agree with you. Holding on yo footage because useless also I feel when people delete footage they previously recorded and prepare for the next video it helps them as a creative become more creative. Thank you for making this video and the videos you do
I actually this past January went through four terabytes of footage from my years of filmmaking and deleted most of it, only keeping highlights and final videos. I'm not taking such an extreme approach as you are, but at the same time I don't want to dump money into all of this data storage. I feel like if I can't fit it all in a reasonable footprint that one might expect for a single person, I've missed the point that what I'm doing is a hobby.
Just so people don't hold out and hope or get disappointed, I think Kraig makes a point of not replying to any comments. I've never seen a reply from Kraig in the 18 months or so that I've been a subscriber, but I could be wrong.
I agree that it works in your case, but as you it's not as clear cut with weddings. To be fair, there is a lot of clips I've saved where I will NEVER go back and re-edit a wedding film and use those, but all that to say that I am glad you made this! It's made me realize that a lot of stuff that gets saved will NEVER be used again.
I think it's beautiful how you've cut the fat from your workflow and video storage. I myself have boxes of hard drives, also copious mini-DV tapes, even VHS tapes on them with footage I will probably never touch again...but I can't bear to part with it. Also, when it comes to footage for work, deleting any raw files is a no go. That being said, your minimalist philosophy will inspire me to think about how I might better organize my junk. Great video (despite all of the background noise obvs.)
If you had an edu Gmail account you have access to an unlimited Google drive. Alternatively with your website, you could sign up with Google g suite for $10/mo you can get an unlimited g suite/Google drive.
haha this is perfect to hear, even though it makes me twitch lol. I'm on the average of adding more storage and buying the LaCie 12Big. but I don't do vlogs. Most of my videos aren't posted on youtube but eventually my contracts will allow for me to post the videos.
Why don't you use Google drive file stream all your footage can be in the cloud and on your computer but not use disk space If you get file stream via Gsuite you can get 1tb for $10 a month or unlimited drive storage for around $50 a month
Got to disagree with you on this one. I have all my raw footage from my last 5 years of doing TH-cam backed up on external hard drives and I’m happy to have it.
You're right, in germany we had a youtuber, whos account was deleted, because he was hacked... I think thats very seldom. Thank you for your videos, i was considering to buy new HDD's for back ups, because I had every single clip that I've shoot stored on external drives and space was running out:-D Your words opened my eyes, i realized that I didn't use the files for years:-D Greetings from Germany:-)
isnt using stock footage in your own videos kind of deceptive if the very product you are selling is video production, you're essentially using someone else's footage and claiming it as your own. Thats like using stock photos as a wedding photographer. It seems strange.
Reaction to storytime: I've been struggling to sleep the last few nights I'm so behind on my wedding edits. I'm glad you had similar issues. Now to invent a device that freezes time so I can catch up. Hola at me if you are ever in Ireland
You do know it isn't minimalism just to store your crap elsewhere? that's like saying it is minimalism to rent a storage unit and dump all your crap there...
Hey Kraig... I have a potential "Hack" for you I am not sure you are aware of. You can start a G-Suite account with 5 active users, which means you can activate dummy accounts... and then for $10 per user per month or $50 a month have Unlimited Google Storage. $600 a year for unlimited storage isn't bad... and if you get a few other film making friends in on the deal... it can cost you even less.
Great video Kraig! I've also been uploading some of my videos to Stock Footage tho I use a service called Blackbox. They upload to 4 major stock websites (Storyblocks as well) while taking a 15% cut of the final sales, which I think is fair considering they cut down the work you have to do by 75%
Just so I’m clear, once your done you throw everything away apart from the final render. So if you ever did want to revisit/re-edit all you’d work from was the finished (flattened) vid? I’m not suggesting you’d probably ever need to re visit something like a wedding video, but still, that’s a pretty hardcore workflow!!
You're so brave I couldn't do it! Plus, if you hadn't deleted everything you would have had thousands upon thousands of amazing clips for your stock footage venture from all the amazing places you've been over the years. You might have even got model releases from your couples too and uploaded that stuff as well. All those deleted assetsssssssss 😢 like I said: you're brave!
Everyone knows what you are doing in the bathroom, so why bother locking the door? Why bother closing it? Better yet, why bother having a door in the first place? This is the sort of logic I here when people talk about data and internet security. It's not about hiding things everyone knows you're doing. It's about protecting basic human dignity and right to freedom. You should care about where your data goes and who sees it for the same reason why you should care about someone else installing cameras in your house or someone hacking into your cameras: you can't trust others with your information. Let's not be so minimal that our ability to think gets small. Besides security, everything else in the video was great. If you want compelling reasons why to include privacy in your minimalism, here's a video: th-cam.com/video/mDVBDOaPGtE/w-d-xo.html
"Safe on Google's servers" until they randomly suspend your account and you lose everything you ever filmed in your whole life.
This disrespect to Nickle Back shall not stand.
Eating chips while I stare at my almost full 50TB NAS.

haha the second I saw footage that wasn't yours I was like "Oh here come the Storyblocks Sponsor" I knew it was coming.
Called me out lol. This helped a lot, actually. I'm going to go through my old stuff, get prints, and delete it all.
Little known tip: Google Drive also has a business account, called "G Suite" and it costs 10-20$ per month, per user, minimum 5 users... EXCEPT! Google doesn't enforce the minimum user. Matt D'Avella doesn't like deleting his raw footage.
abrupt ending. ;-)

Loved the story in this video!! Expectations are everything. Keep up the great work man💪🏼
Your videos and editing style has become addicting, thanks for all you do. Inspiring me to make some of my own!
I burn off all my projects onto bluray once the final edit is completed. I've had cases where I need to refer back to some footage and it's been super useful. I get the point of this video tho.

Thanks Kraig, but this is something I’ll take some time with. I admire your journey, thanks for helping.
Big Fan!
Solid piece of content and a phenomenal brand sponsorship integration 👏 👏 👏
love the selects concept. I'm shifting to this process. hating so much on ext hard rives at the moment.
My guy out here killing it!!
Never stop stopping
i just upload RAW footage to Google Photos and then forget about it, unlimited storage so I will never run out (not full quality but good enough for what I would ever need it for) and then every now and then I can go back if needed.
Google G-suit is 8$ a montch. unlimited storage, acces everywhere everytime.
G suite my friend. Unlimited data storage .
Data storage -minimalism- outsourcing.
what's on your phone, and any minimalism set up?
sry if i missed something on your instagram, but that's clearly your apartment? on your podcast you said you had become a nomad, and that you no longer had an apartment, and you even had to set up your address to be elsewhere.
so either your "nomad" lifestyle was just miscommunication, or was it just fake hype?
don't wanna be rude or anything, im really just confused...
India probably took over the lease and his name is no longer tied to the place.
You’re not wrong. I have my theories.
yeah it's kinda all over the place now
Did you mean "My best footage all nice and* accessible"?
I too am confused regarding the return to the New York apartment for this video and after going to the Volvo event in Sweden. He said he was "leaving New York" before going to Sweden. Did that mean leaving India? She obviously has re-arranged the apartment to suit herself. But now he's back. That's not being a "nomad".
the tv in the back... well played kraig, well played...
Funny that you talked about backlog in this video. I literally spent my entire vlog today talking about that.
I have to agree with you. Holding on yo footage because useless also I feel when people delete footage they previously recorded and prepare for the next video it helps them as a creative become more creative. Thank you for making this video and the videos you do

Technically.

Ah ha gotcha, but yeah true.
I’m sure you know this but you can have unlimited space on Google Drive by just adding 5 accounts as a business and paying $50 a month

So you use TH-cam as video storage, is it? Just one question: do they lose quality over the original videos?
It's fucking *RAAAAAW*
Disliked for trusting tech companies too much, especially Google
INTENTION that's the word! Great video again, keeping it real :D!
I think it's beautiful how you've cut the fat from your workflow and video storage. You wrigh. Im also not a fan of preper world. It's really difficult to get the balance what it's pro, and what could be a preper/collector type 😯
does anyone know what font he uses?
You can download your own videos without using Ummy Video Downloader
2:09 prccess
I respect your lifestyle choices, but I am horrified by them.
He doesn’t watch Linus tech tips or Matt Johnson.
Is that safe? I mean, a entire life job. Depends of 2 or 3 companies servers?

I think you can do raw footage sith Google Photos now. It's unlimited and for free.
Got to disagree with you on this one. I have all my raw footage from my last 5 years of doing TH-cam backed up on external hard drives and I’m happy to have it.
well yes, but is it actually useful?
iMADiT yup, I’ve pulled out clips that aren’t color corrected or don’t have background music for recent projects.
Hey Kraig. What USB-C doc is that?
Can't trust the cloud tho, isn't expensive to store on external HDD and keep it away. Nice vid!
You're right, in germany we had a youtuber, whos account was deleted, because he was hacked... I think thats very seldom. Hi man, I just found you because of Cody's channel :) I really like the way u make videos! Have a good day

Hola at me if you are ever in Ireland
Respect you as a filmmaker but no this stresses me out SAVE YOUR FOOTAGE lol
What happened to India?
One of the best "commercials" i've ever seen! soo smooth
new microphone? sm58?
I gotta take notes in this video. Many many notes.
You'll realise to keep a lot when you become a dad =) Cheers Kraig!
Look up GOOGLE ONE ☝🏼

"data minimalism" but his OS is loaded with bloat.
Love your videos. Really helpful making digital creative life easier. Thanks.
do you even youtube anymore? what do you do all day?
Great video Kraig! I've also been uploading some of my videos to Stock Footage tho I use a service called Blackbox. They upload to 4 major stock websites (Storyblocks as well) while taking a 15% cut of the final sales, which I think is fair considering they cut down the work you have to do by 75%
So much agree. I have been deleting my raw videos ever since i started my channel.
Good video Kraig!
What do you recommend for some one who has a few years of footage on a NAS that wants to try this? Just delete the whole thing?
Just so I’m clear, once your done you throw everything away apart from the final render. So if you ever did want to revisit/re-edit all you’d work from was the finished (flattened) vid? I’m not suggesting you’d probably ever need to re visit something like a wedding video, but still, that’s a pretty hardcore workflow!!
Yeah get rid of that tv and couch and then we can talk about minimalism hahaha jk
Yo Google's G Suite offers unlimited storage for business owners for only $10/mo
You're welcome
It's not unlimited if you are less than 5 users but limited to 1 To ;)
Thanks Kraig. I'm sure it's just not me struggling with RAW footage eating up precious storage space. Very practical advice.
Thanks for another great video. Is the reason why you never put fade transitions in your videos, so you don't lose part of the clips when reusing?
Love how you've data minimalised video ending. :-)
Great videast. But I better not saying what I think about the person as a "minimalist".
Whats the hack video? Link anyone?
Hey, Kraig. Do you ask permission from the people included in your clips on Story Blocks? Thanks.
5:38 Heavenly minimalist 😆
Great advice here...
Interesting and informative!
Just upload to bacbklaze. It's $50/yr for unlimited data
Very interesting!

Having a hard time taking advice from a guy that literally lists all of the ways he's unprofessional.
You're messed up for saying "dumpster noises" while simultaneously having a picture of Nickelback pop up lol
