Tip: cracking the gas tank and releasing the air pressure from inside the tank will keep the gas from bubbling out when you disconnect the carburetor from the gas lines.
That is the CLEANEST saw I have ever seen ! Back in the 1980s I wrote software for Ford Motor engine controllers, including what was called the feedback carburetor. It looks like the solenoid controlling the fuel mixture is actually controlling the vent to the diaphragm, which of course, does control fuel flow. The "33 times a second" is the speed that the processor reads all the inputs, runs the calculation for optimal spark advance and fuel and then send output. At 6000 RPM, the engine has 50 "combustion events" per second, so it is going to take at least 2 events to make an adjustment. Oh, and our "black box" was a whole lot bigger ad it did NOT have a diagnostic port !
Just a little tip.. to stop filling your eyes with fuel when you take the pipes off the carb just unscrew the gas cap first for a split second to release any pressure - works a treat.
The most common problem I've had with M-tronic saws have been the fuel solenoid failing. I was told that Stihl has a new and improved solenoids now. Hopefully.
I subbed your channel when you mentioned your in St Louis area. I am right on the other side of the big river from South County. I have a lawn biz for 15 yrs and have been climbing here and there for 5 doing smaller takedowns and trimming. Occasionally i get asked to do tree work in across the river, ill refer them to you guys. Love hearing Tool and Rage in the background of your videos. Keep up the good work.
I took your advice and picked up the 261 C-M instead of the 361 since I have a 461. That is hands down the nicest saw I have ran. I love my 461 but it's alot of saw when I am cutting up north in the creek and on steep hills I like the lighter more agile saw.
Interesting breakdown. I can imagine every other old computer repair shop adding "electronic saw repair and maintenance" as a service since this is very similar to what they do all day.
just FYI the white piece on the wires is a connector you can just unplug the wires from the solenoid and not need to disconnect the wires from the saw. good vid thanks for sharing

How can I reset the m661 mtronic system, if it doesn't run at idle? It only runs with half/full gas. It guess it's thinks, it's has an air fuel leak because of low fuel
I actually like the mtronic always runs right if it ever doesnt ill just reset it and if that doesnt work then you have a wiring harness issue internal carb issue or the fuel silinioid so its not that hard to fix these its mainly just a harness and sensors added to a carb minus the screws
Yesterday I picked up a new Stihl MSA 120 battery chainsaw w/ battery and charger. It is very low end but does very well with cutting down stands of bamboo and cutting small branches of wood. It sure is much lighter than my MS390 w 25" bar and easier on the back while cutting the bamboo at ground level. Any thoughts on reviewing the Stihl battery line, Human?
I'd like to, can't really justify the cost though, I'm far from wealthy. Just happens that my job is also my only hobby, vast portion of my funds go right into work.
There are a couple different styles of limit stops, the two ways I've removed them are simply prying in off with a flathead screwdriver, or threading a wood screw into the top and pulling the stop off. 193T is one of the best saws to do this with, responds well to MM from what I've heard. Just rip off the limit of the high side adjustment screw, and add some fuel on the high side after modding the muffler, will run lean if you don't.
mine ran perfect for two years, now it doesnt idle and stalls out.....all I wanna do is sink the carb in my ultrasonic cleaner, I'm really not up to all this dickin around
OMG, I don't know if this is good or bad. Sure, the electronics can adjust for best performance much faster but how often will they break down and how much to fix them.
Chris Dowing, the Stihl M-tronic solenoid is quite robust and very seldomly fails. I am a Stihl Gold Certified Technician and rarely ever see an M-tronic unit in the shop for anything but the common annoyance (stale fuel, broken stuff from rough use, general maintenance)
First run of 661's had an issue with running lean "I think the fuel was puddling from what I heard". As with all new things though, there will be some growing pains. As far as I concerned though, they're all worked out, had nothing but awesome performance out of all the mtronic and autotune saws I've run.
Human, you are absolutely correct about the "growing pains" of the electronic carbs, but like you said they are pretty much over now. The flooding issue you are talking about had to do with the helical spring in the solenoid breaking. With some refinements to the microprocessor and a different fuel filter that is a thing of the past.
I'm with you Chris, this does looks like a problem waiting to happen, right when you want to cut wood. I have seen people online who have an Mtronic and it won't run right, and the shops can't fix it, and Stihl doesn't care.
I got problem with a 261. It turn on but the chain keep running and when I apply the break it turn off itself. Any suggestions from someone please. Do I have to replace the carburetor or is something else..........????????? Please let me know any ideas I will appreciate your help thank you all.
Human, Sorry what I meant was when I see something that has become much more complicated I always ask the salesman that question. In other words what was wrong with the original design that needs all these extra components. Love your videos they are so to the point.
@@memylastname9972 I knew what you meant the first time, and I agree. Why put this on a chainsaw? An engine making 70hp/L that runs beats an engine that makes 80hp/L that doesn't run every time.
Yea GM Rochester carbs with mixture control solenoids come to mind. They were just junk until the throttle body fuel injection came out. Hopefully 30-ish years of development has made a big difference

I will rebuild my old husky 372 xp 10 times over before I'd consider . auto tune or m.tronics saw. I have a 550xp mark 2 and I just don't like how lean it runs and I can't do anything thing about it
Samuel Michelson Stihl will continue to manufacture carbureted saws for countries without emission requirements for the foreseeable future. Look up the international country map on the Stihl website. Carbureted saws are the norm.
Dan Henderson, I dont need to look up a map. Im aware that in other countries they will still continue to sell carbureted models where in the US the models will probably go strictly m-tronic with some time. They still manufacture the lightning/contra in Brazil along with the 090 and some other old models that dont comply with US regulations, but the m-tronic is also available there.
Im a wildland firefighter and we use the 461 without m tronic for the simple reason that the heat from cutting burning wood can cause overreving. all my personal saws are m tronic amd i like them but not for firefighting
How would heat cause overreving on an m tronic? ... I have a 362 cm and this whole electronically controlled carb is new to me ... but I am a mechanic by trade and I’m not sure I understand
Dan Henderson, its not all about the EPA. The cardinal readon for coming up with the m-tronic system was varying qualities of fuel worldwide. The electronically controlled carb adjusts itself depending on altitude or higher concentrations of alcohol.
Samuel Michelson Masive pressure by the latest tier EPA guidelines would have all but killed the two strokes in America and Europe. A cleaner burning engine saved them temporarily. Stihl has very different models based on regions globally. Many models overseas are never sold here due to the EPA.
Samuel Michelson exactly, fuel quality can't be guaranteed and a system like this will make those small adjustments rather than leaving the operator unhappy or creating a warranty claim. I would have no problem buying a saw with tech like this.. Hell I'd buy a fuel injected saw if it was possible to miniaturize the system that much... no one is driving carb'd cars anymore because technology advances (dare I say driven by tightening emissions controls?) proved how outdated and crappy carbs were.
volvo09 Hmmmm, except most countries don't offer anything mtronic. Carbs are the norm everywhere except countries with strict emission standards. Example: South Africa does not offer the MS261. Some countries in South America have such saws as the 070, 072, MS382, etc Stihl had a vast catalogue of saws that are never seen in North America, none of which are mtronic.
volvo09 This system adjusts the timing and fuel to air ratio, nothing more. 13.6 to 14.7 to one is The optimal range no matter what gasoline is run. Electronics does nothing to compensate for bad gas. A engine is either lean or rich or it is in the optimal range. Bad fuel quality such as low octane fuel still requires the same exact ratio to burn. The mtronic is not magical it simply senses the incoming air density/volume and delivers the appropriate amount of fuel. The end result is a cleaner running motor and ideally more overall hp.
@@cdub2231 sure, the stuff been out for years now, early issues long resolved, just because you had a fluke doesn't mean the system is unreliable, nor does your machine dying mean it was caused by the system... I have a 5 yo now 241 with mtronic, no issues at all, on the other hand I killed my previous husky, because it went lean in a long cut, the auto adjust would have prevented that from happening.
I can't really say for longevity, as I'm not a logger, but there are only a couple of people complaining that their mtronic failed (these few are very loud obviously) while many more use the stuff daily and it just works, from what I read the only thing that fails really is the solenoid, it fails rich so no real potential for damage, and is around 20$ to replace. Most people don't adjust the carburator every time conditions change, only at the beginning of the day etc., so it runs lean in prolonged cuts and rich when limbing, the processor adjusts on the fly, all the time, for every change in conditions.
LOL, I know, something I've thought about as a bunch of friends are techs. I like to think that the guy searching on youtube isn't the type to go to a dealer, so I'm not really hurting. Also, the wannabe DIY, will just screw something up and come in for more expensive repairs! lol
Yeah, I know what you're saying. Not really worried, just playin around. Yes, sometimes i have to fix the problems that the owner caused by trying to fix the problems... Its a weird circle of fuckery
Love your channel but yes you can still get carburetor vs. Mtroniks because they have found and have said they fixed all the Kinks in the mtroniks but they're still some other issues where carburetor actually performs better in certain situations than the mtroniks owe some guys are still sticking with the carburetors I'm still sticking with the carburetors that's what works for me mtroniks great for some but yes you can get carburetor still over the mtroniks have a great day
I'm just weak, lol. I actually did mess up though, not long after I made the first couple cuts it wouldn't run, didn't have a wire connection seated tight enough and it came loose.
The 661 is one that if you don't use the decomp, and halfass the pull, it's not going to turn over for you, thing has really high compression. Also without the bar on, it's light and you just end up pulling it up like I did.
Just another thing to fuck, and when it does it's big money to get it fixed. Nah, all through my years of forestry all I ever used was farm/ranch saws and they did just perfect and they still do. Regular carburetors are fine. I'm not your average joe that cuts a few trees a few hours a day and store the saw away for months. Every day, all day every week, every month, every year and I say the farm/ranch saws do just fine for me in comarcial use, and I know a lot of people that I know that are in forestry will say the same thing. You don't necessarily need a "pro" saw for comarcial use.
We wouldnt be stuck with the junk carb stihl makes if someone does a video on a machined plate to match a carb without the new junk on a saw. Its surely possible.
Electronic feedback carb systemss are historically the worst of both worlds. They work much less well than EFI (currently impractical for chainsaws) and are a hassle to tune for the real world. The unpleasant transition years for cars were in the 1980s.
OB that is actually incorrect lockers have been felling trees for years and years and years on carburetors I have a whole line of Stihl carburetor chainsaws they are amazing and have had zero I'm talking zero issues with them big tree small trees that doesn't matter skip chain full chip doesn't matter where I got buddies or I have friends that have had all kinds of issues they are not hard to tune you can talk fuel injection all you want with cars but I certainly miss the days when you could work on your own vehicle in the garage without thousands of dollars of a diagnostic computer or thousands of dollars having a master mechanic work on your car so there is some actual huge benefits to the old school versus the new if you got lots of money to burn go with the new
So what are the advantages or disadvantages of M-tronic vs no M-tronic? What is everyone "moaning and groaning" about? I'm buying a new saw and I am considering the M-tronic model...
How did you become a Stihl severities tech? Just work at a dealer and learn as you go? Or did you go to there plant an learn. I know that's for the good wrench guys
Not a certified tech at all, just a hobbyist. Actual tech have different levels which they can work their way up, my buddy Mike is a Gold level tech, had to go to classes in VA beach for it, he said it was pretty damn tough.

You gotta be kidding me - embrace that shit ??? Fucking bullshit - old school rules !!! The stihl 362 and husky 372 are still available w/o solenoid and chip , as of february 2020 --- simpler - better - easier - faster to work on , own and operate.

Garbage electronic system. I ran this saw for all of 15 mins before it started giving me trouble. Shutting off, hard start, irregular idle. Seems to be running rich and has low idle. I have no way of tuning the fuel air mixture. Junk.
the chainsaw collector 360 i work for a dealer that sells both brands. husky has way more problems with their auto tune than Stihl does. i dont like either of the systems

Most people don't adjust the carburator every time conditions change, only at the beginning of the day etc., so it runs lean in prolonged cuts and rich when limbing, the processor adjusts on the fly, all the time, for every change in conditions.
Nice video, now stop trying to screw me out of a job! lol :-)
Nice video thanks for shareing my ms 660 is still running well think it will be sometime before i get a 661
Leave it to the Germans to over engineer something that worked perfectly.
Thanks for the vid human. Very informative. Been wanting to tear mine down check it out.
Me too, was a bit nervous honestly though. Not a cheap saw to fix if I'd have fucked something up, lol
Hey Man U should come check out Ope forum. There's a lot of cool ppl there who love saws like us.
Nothing mods can't fix
if you could show how the trimming is done it ould be nice not to make certain mistakes or get some tips.
thanks
Like the background music!
Love your channel but yes you can still get carburetor vs. Mtroniks because they have found and have said they fixed all the Kinks in the mtroniks but they're still some other issues where carburetor actually performs better in certain situations than the mtroniks owe some guys are still sticking with the carburetors I'm still sticking with the carburetors that's what works for me mtroniks great for some but yes you can get carburetor still over the mtroniks have a great day
i bet al gores private jet pollutes more than every chainsaw combined in the world
you can special order the ms261 and the ms362 with a standard carb from any stihl deal. I know this because I just picked up one of each.
cheers
why did it seem hard to pull at the end? did you mess it up?
I'm just weak, lol. I actually did mess up though, not long after I made the first couple cuts it wouldn't run, didn't have a wire connection seated tight enough and it came loose.
ah so u saying it wasnt a compression issue after u put it together and it look hard to pull? in other vids u seem to pull them well.
The 661 is one that if you don't use the decomp, and halfass the pull, it's not going to turn over for you, thing has really high compression. Also without the bar on, it's light and you just end up pulling it up like I did.
Quite a few videos of me using this saw since this video.
so when u pull it at the end was the decomp valve on? if so might just be a balance issue without the bar as u said and some weakness lol
The 2 screws do NOT hold the solenoid assumbly; thats underneath. The 2 screws hold the micro-switch,
oh any détails on micro switch
Just another thing to fuck, and when it does it's big money to get it fixed. Nah, all through my years of forestry all I ever used was farm/ranch saws and they did just perfect and they still do. Regular carburetors are fine. I'm not your average joe that cuts a few trees a few hours a day and store the saw away for months. Every day, all day every week, every month, every year and I say the farm/ranch saws do just fine for me in comarcial use, and I know a lot of people that I know that are in forestry will say the same thing. You don't necessarily need a "pro" saw for comarcial use.
Try using a magnet on your screw driver to collect all small screws
The solenoid looks like a small fuel injector
i think the solénoïde leans the fuel /air mixture any toughts on that
Is it a Tillotson?
Normally Walbro on Stihl equipment👍
Bit of Muse in the background. They grew up in my home town!
I hear Maynard James Keenan
At 3.55 who is that tool sounding band 👍👍
Jim
That's Mastodon. One of my favorite bands of all time.

Human
Thank you sir 👍
Glad you did that 'n not me.
Thanks for your time Mon.
We wouldnt be stuck with the junk carb stihl makes if someone does a video on a machined plate to match a carb without the new junk on a saw. Its surely possible.
Me gustaría que todo lo nuevo de Stihl viniera con la traducción al español .Soy mecánico de motosierra s y no sé idiomas.
Electronic feedback carb systemss are historically the worst of both worlds. They work much less well than EFI (currently impractical for chainsaws) and are a hassle to tune for the real world. The unpleasant transition years for cars were in the 1980s.
Ob Fuscated have you saw the new 500i?
Turn the music of it is annoying
song at 3:32??
The wolf is loose, Mastodon
Wow it's really not that complicated I was expecting much worse
Nice
MORE TOOL TEAR DOWN, or is it Perfect Circle. Maynard James Keenan Fuck Yea!
I'm thinking about buying a MS241 for dirt bike mounted trail maintenance. from 3000ft to 12,000 ft altitude
(doing my homework first) this video felt like cheating
Thanks Human
Hell yeah! Dirt bike mounted chainsaw? Need to get a dirt bike now =)
2007 KTM 300 2 stroke, 3 Grand. weekend side job for you.
the thrill of 50 foot hunks of timber flying at your head all day long. (well..... you flying at them). sprinkle in cliffs and rivers as skills permit.
Oh..... I brought home my MS241 today. practice close to home with an experience buddy, collecting firewood in the National Forest west of town.
Hopefully some of my steel work experience will transfer to chainsaw.
Stay Human,
Very nice =)
Used to have a KLX-450, rode at evans creek near seattle, then at pala raceway outside san diego when I moved south. Love riding, minus the cracked sternum that one time I came up short on some triples, lol
Enjoy the saw =)
You gotta be kidding me - embrace that shit ??? Fucking bullshit - old school rules !!! The stihl 362 and husky 372 are still available w/o solenoid and chip , as of february 2020 --- simpler - better - easier - faster to work on , own and operate.
You should make a instagram

Human thank you
Human it says the link is broken lol could you add me it's flyers6098
Human I’d love an add too if you still have this account. Username is “badatcomputer’
What made you put that horrible music over your dialogue????? What were you thinking???
After seeing this I will stick with husq autotune. Who knows may be worse!!!
Put 80s tech on a saw and every old timer in the world has a coronary .. maybe they shouldnt throw their manuals away with the box like everythig else.. went to my grandads to help him with his new tv.. wheres the manual pop?? Aw i musta throwed it out.. well then...
Hate that m-tronic saws I wanna set mine on fire
Wait till your 25 yrs older. Glasses will be sliding down nose. Hands jittery from age.
From years of chainsaw vibration?
M tronic has no power. You can't lean the saw out to it's full potential. Might be ok for cutting firewood, but to cut big timber all day it's a joke.
Turn the music off….
Garbage electronic system. I ran this saw for all of 15 mins before it started giving me trouble. Shutting off, hard start, irregular idle. Seems to be running rich and has low idle. I have no way of tuning the fuel air mixture. Junk.
Your music is annoying
stop playing mechanic.
@@tjlovesrachel troll👈😅
Jared Green loll noo.. not trolling at all
the Stihl MTRONIC is junk man Husqvarna is a lot better than Stihl Husqvarna has a lot more thought in there saws
the chainsaw collector 360 i work for a dealer that sells both brands. husky has way more problems with their auto tune than Stihl does. i dont like either of the systems
