Nice video. Very much correct that steering is the key with a spinnaker. You don’t want to mess around with sheeting in and out - find the sweet spot for the sail and keep there by either steering higher to get power, or steering down to depower. It would rare that you’d not be constantly making minor adjustments by steering as you go along. Steering, not sheeting, is the key with an asymmetrical spinnaker. The sweet spot for the spinnaker will be when the luff of the sail is curled back maybe an inch or two. No more. If it’s flapping you’re too high. If it is collapsed, you’re too low.
excelent video. Joy have you the measures of reinforcement at spinnaker sail? I have one sail that was used without thrompet and now I need to use this spinnaker sail with thrompete. excuse-me my english.
Hello Joe, Could you please do a video on Man Overboard technique from crew and helm position as well as parking at the deep water mooring in Mon Choicy Thanks
Sorry got this too late. I've packed my sailing bags in Mauritius now. Hi Joe, i have got a problem with my hobie 16 spi. I just got it a week a Go. Now the grond edge keeps falling in.... even on a broad reach.... do you have any clue of what is going on?
Ok good but need to explain why loosing the main you capsize. May be because you close the slot and do g the bow. Just a little reminder. Good luck 16 not really a boat for spinnaker is it? Just say that because I like the 16 for what is made for not for what some people try to make them be! Me being a old boring dog. Lol
It's not that easing the mainsheet will make you capsize. It's that all of the power control is with the steering - so if you ease mainsheet to prevent a capsize and not steer - you'll probably capsize. The 16 is working well with spinnaker but in heavy wind it's not needed.
I understand you don’t want to slacken the mainsheet to much as because the mainsheet tension acts as a backstay and takes the forward load from the spinaker, so you do not over stress the mast ( at least on the larger spinnaker cats like the F-18. How loose is too loose on the 16?@@JoyriderTV

I've done 14 knots on a Tyka today. Good video as always 👍
Good speed (I just googled Tyka - nice looking boat) Which country are you in?
@@JoyriderTV I'm in Guadeloupe, the main French Caribbean island.
@@ninpgmer8959 nice!
Thanks this is helpful! More sail area is always good...until I go swimming
Great stuff as usual.
Would love a video of exactly how they rigged the spinnaker and all the items needed to do it in a hobie 16.
Ah, try this one:

I think that probably contacting a Hobie dealer will be your best bet to get those measurements.

measures of points of reinforcement on spinnaker sail in details please.
Unfortunately I don't have a 16 with a spinnaker here in Greece so I can't help you with that.
Hey just curious, does the spinnaker come stock with the Hobie 16, and is it considered “race legal”?
The spinnaker kit is available from Hobie. It can be used for racing in a separate class.
@@JoyriderTV Ok great, thanks! 👍
Excellent, been waiting for....wait, did you just say 'safely'???
Might have mentioned it. Very easy to have a bad time with the spinnaker if you get it wrong!

Maybe your pole is too high - when you hoist the sail on land and feel the front edge is it quite tight?
Joseph Bennett no it isnt quitte tight on the land
