Sam was a great crewman! It was great to see both the mainsail totally loose and the jib also totally loose and you were still cruising right along. You definitely had no time to react to those two tip overs. It all happened in less than a second. Thank you for posting this video. It was great!
I bought my Hobie 16 in 1972. Sail # 1959. All white 5.0 ounce Dacron with two reef points. Regatta blue decks on lime green hulls. I installed a second mast tang so I designed my on easy righting system using second shroud to extend the angle of the top hull weight to assist me in righting it during a capsize. I did a lot of single handing it in high winds . I installed a roller traveler and jib traveler system that I could also operate while on my trapeze. My configuration was a fully raked aft mast , reefed main to the smallest size ( 2nd reef point ), height of the main was level with the top of the job. The halyard had a second slug that fit into the little fork for maximum down haul. My sides had indoor outdoor carpet and foot loops for stability while hiking with an aft attached line to prevent being tossed forward. Great memories. I also owned a Sol Cat 18 in 1975 and Panthercraft Tornado in 1977 which I raced in the Miami to Key Largo race single handed .

Next time, especially with h16s that have some mileage, check the underside of the beam right next to the cast aluminum connections to the hull. Not cracks, but rather like very slight ripples in the material that you can feel. Maybe more impressive: I built a new beam from wood. Ash, 7 or eight layers, hollow inside. 1 week of work...To my knowledge it is still around (I long since sold the boat)

From Paros....brings back harrowing memories from last week! Capsized our Hobie 16 in strong winds. Turtled! Able to right it but not quick enough for it to capsize again on the recovery . Blown dangerously close to the rocky cliffs. Recovery just in time to avoid disaster. Great memories! Thanks for your videos.

That wind is PERFECT! I used to windsurf as a teenager & I simply wouldn't bother, unless it was at least force 4 & the fun really started > force 8 gale. I used to terrify my poor parents. At 15yo (about 1987) I had the chance to crew on a Hobie cat 16 in a gale, like this, and it was one of the most exhilarating sails of my life - immediately up on the trapeze, about 5m off the beach - fan-bloody-tastic! OMFG, watching this tool me straight back to that time, an to the times I went out in... challenging conditions & broke my mast, one day, and another time, I put my head through the wildly overpowered sail, while trying to do a water-start - the overpoweredness of the sail, made the leading edge very unstable & one moment, tried to pull my arms off, then smashed onto & past my head (tri-stop mylar - almost tore my ears off, on the way out)!
Joseph Bennett I wonder if there might be scope for a @Tucker Gott style chase-cam? He flies a paramotor and tows a GoPro on a sort of shuttle-cock - gets surprisingly good footage!
Back in the 80's I got into windsurfing just because the setup was cheaper, after watching this video I'm glad that I did. Shortboarding is less work, faster and more fun.

Yeah baby! Epic. Nothing more exhilarating that having to constantly fight the boat to keep it upright! I’ve seen winds like that a couple of times on Sledder but where I sail we have big waves to deal with too! Awesome video!
I wouldn't have gone if there had been waves as well. That's one of the bonus' of this place to be able to get out in that wind with still pretty flat water.

Been there done that on our Hobie 16 and lost our mast once in those conditions once. It’s survival mode! Once we had two out on the trapeze and a third hiking and we were still going over, but it was a lot flatter than your conditions. Great handling out there, well done. I miss my Hobie, I now windsurf which is different again but it’s not the same adrenaline when you are one the edge on a Hobie, the raw power is awesome.
I raced a hobie 18 across open ocean from Virgin Gorda to Anagada in the BVI. Second on the first leg and first one the leg back. The boat was set up for charters with wing seats outboard which was a great for us, larger sail area and more leverage outboard.
Many tanks for sharing amazing video Joe! Deels like a similar kind of ride we once made (at least in my mind!) many, many summers ago when a thunderstorm hit the fleet during a race. We had a camera boat chasing us heading back to the beach. Never saw the end result though. This kind of fills that gap. Appreciated!

So fun, the kid is really good on the wire!. Out of curiosity, high wind fun days, we sheet the jib tight and traveled in, the jib can’t capsize the boat, even though the main is backeinded….it’s one less thing to deal with. Congrats

Dude I sailed a 16 with a body of mine (rip) 20 years ago in similar conditions in greece. It was the ride of my life! Racing I14s and 49er never got close...
Love the idea of 14 sails on 16. Would have been even better on this day. Watching you makes me fell better about sailing my Nacra 5.2 in similar conditions with similar results.
Awesome stuff. You need to get the crew playing the traveller aggressively. Sail the boat off the jib and play the main. You can even play the main together if you know each other. Cant get enough sheet out faat enough otherwise. Also throw some straps on the back tiger style

Actually i see the main issue is that the crew are depowering with the jib which is not the crews call and makes it real hard for the skipper to get a feel of the power.
Yes, if it were possible to depower both sails as skipper effectively it would be much easier to know where we were in terms of power. I tried solo earlier without the jib and I felt so much more control.
Would have been interesting to see if reefing the main in these conditions would have yielded a similar speed. Have done my share of crashing through the rigging on both 14s and 16s , it's great fun. Could never work out where I was cutting myself, scratches and nicks while messing with same.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. If i'd have been lest spent after this run it would certainly have been good too try it again with reefed and then 14 mainsail.

@@matthewegreen1 I'm directly across the lake at Port Franks, near Grand Bend so I know all about how beautiful but dangerous lake Huron can get within minutes. Those north westerly's can pick up fast. It's wise to use a weather app to look out for wind changes before heading out too far.
Steven Vachon this was a classic mistake on our part ... got offshore, wind went dead (so now we’re stuck), then we onshore we see a cloud deck rolling in with an anvil on top, then the offshore wind blew us from about 3 miles offshore out into the shipping channel ~ 15 miles. The rollers that formed that far out would not let us tack, kept pushing to nose over out to sea. The only onshore landmark we could see on shoreline were the smoke stacks at harbor beach. Lake Huron != little lake
@@JoyriderTV Well, not merely easing, but I wonder if for instance, you had started the jib on the botttom hole so that the top of the job would be spilling wind, and as for the main, a bit more to Woodward with the traveler and a bit less mainsheet tension to that the leech was slack, for the same effect?
the strongest of Wind i'ff ever saild was in Porto Pollensa in 2003 63 km/h. The only way for me to sail in such strong winds was to loosen the jib halyard so that the mast just turned and didn't jump out of the mast base. every other extensor line was so tight that my fingers ached. The mainsheet could easily be pulled tight with one hand due to the loose rig. This is how the leech opens when there is a gust. Similar to a windsurf sail. How did you manage that.

@@JoyriderTV I had my 16' out one day with hurricane warnings up. Winds gusting to 55. I was 170 lbs. and my crew was 6'2 and 200 with all of it in his upper torso, so perfect for a breezy day. We sailed under a reefed main and jib. I was clocked on radar at 34.9 mph. ON RADAR at the fastest. We only pitchpoled once on a jibe, but that was the hairiest ride I've ever been on in a sailboat. Just a suggestion... I notice that you're main traveler was out quite a bit, which is fine, especially in gusty wind, but your jib traveler was inboard almost all the way. You should be able to pick up more speed if you open your slot a bit with the jib traveler. At times I would even leave the main cleated and just adjust trim with the traveler. Ball-bearing travelers were a Godsend. Cool video. I wish we had Go Pros back when I was sailing a Hobie.
Nice sailing. All they way back on the windward casting. You are me 40 years ago. You need to get the Hawaiian righting system - bungees under the tramp. Extend the bungee, pull it behind our back, and just lean out over the water. Hobie will right more easily. You many also want to install auto-kickup rudders.
Yes. I've looked at the Hawaiian righting system, definitely a fan but we decided across our fleet to keep the 'standard' system. We wind our rudders up super tight here because we're sailing strong winds every day and don't want them coming up mid flight. Cheers

That would have all helped, longer jib sheets, longer mainsheet, we couldn't leave the jib in as that would have had us over on it's own!

Actually i see the main issue is that the crew are depowering with the jib which is not the crews call and makes it real hard for the skipper to get a feel of the power.
Yes, if it were possible to depower both sails as skipper effectively it would be much easier to know where we were in terms of power.
I tried solo earlier without the jib and I felt so much more control.
Would have been interesting to see if reefing the main in these conditions would have yielded a similar speed. Have done my share of crashing through the rigging on both 14s and 16s , it's great fun. Could never work out where I was cutting myself, scratches and nicks while messing with same.

If i'd have been lest spent after this run it would certainly have been good too try it again with reefed and then 14 mainsail.

Hi Joe. Great video, thank you for sharing. Have you ever tried jib only for very high wind Hobie 16 sailing? I have hear tale of a 16 with 4 people, jib only, and still being able to blast along, flying hull, in heavy wind.
That will work but will not be able to sail upwind. For reaching or downwind that will be a good option.

Steven Vachon This was when I was younger ... but put in at Port Sanilac on a beautiful Saturday morning and literally kissed the ground at Harbor Beach when we were able to finally make it back in. Rough day of sailing and learned to respect the weather and Lake Huron
@@matthewegreen1 I'm directly across the lake at Port Franks, near Grand Bend so I know all about how beautiful but dangerous lake Huron can get within minutes. Those north westerly's can pick up fast. It's wise to use a weather app to look out for wind changes before heading out too far.
Steven Vachon this was a classic mistake on our part ... got offshore, wind went dead (so now we’re stuck), then we onshore we see a cloud deck rolling in with an anvil on top, then the offshore wind blew us from about 3 miles offshore out into the shipping channel ~ 15 miles. The rollers that formed that far out would not let us tack, kept pushing to nose over out to sea. The only onshore landmark we could see on shoreline were the smoke stacks at harbor beach. Lake Huron != little lake

Well, not merely easing, but I wonder if for instance, you had started the jib on the botttom hole so that the top of the job would be spilling wind, and as for the main, a bit more to Woodward with the traveler and a bit less mainsheet tension to that the leech was slack, for the same effect?

the strongest of Wind i'ff ever saild was in Porto Pollensa in 2003 63 km/h. The only way for me to sail in such strong winds was to loosen the jib halyard so that the mast just turned and didn't jump out of the mast base. every other extensor line was so tight that my fingers ached. The mainsheet could easily be pulled tight with one hand due to the loose rig. This is how the leech opens when there is a gust. Similar to a windsurf sail. How did you manage that.
I'd loosened it off a fair bit but not as much as you. I set the traveller out and tried not to have the jib pulling too much.

Hey Joe, juicy footage... lots of fun! Thank you for using the multiple cameras to catch all the action! Well done! You mentioned the hull speed stats but what was the wind speed that day?
I think the wind was gusting 35 knots.
@@JoyriderTV I had my 16' out one day with hurricane warnings up. Winds gusting to 55. I was 170 lbs. and my crew was 6'2 and 200 with all of it in his upper torso, so perfect for a breezy day. We sailed under a reefed main and jib. I was clocked on radar at 34.9 mph. ON RADAR at the fastest. We only pitchpoled once on a jibe, but that was the hairiest ride I've ever been on in a sailboat. Just a suggestion... I notice that you're main traveler was out quite a bit, which is fine, especially in gusty wind, but your jib traveler was inboard almost all the way. You should be able to pick up more speed if you open your slot a bit with the jib traveler. At times I would even leave the main cleated and just adjust trim with the traveler. Ball-bearing travelers were a Godsend. Cool video. I wish we had Go Pros back when I was sailing a Hobie.

You need to get the Hawaiian righting system - bungees under the tramp. Extend the bungee, pull it behind our back, and just lean out over the water. Hobie will right more easily. You many also want to install auto-kickup rudders.
Yes. I've looked at the Hawaiian righting system, definitely a fan but we decided across our fleet to keep the 'standard' system.
We wind our rudders up super tight here because we're sailing strong winds every day and don't want them coming up mid flight.
