A shining gem of a reaction 💎! The Pips are made up of her brother (Bubba Knight) and two cousins (William Guest, Edward Patten). I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Gladys Knight & The Pips before: Midnight Train To Georgia. Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye) was released as the lead single from Gladys Knight & The Pips' 1973 album: Neither One Of Us. It was written by Jim Weatherly. It was produced by Joe Porter. The song is a cover of Jim Weatherly's 1972 song: Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye). The song reached #1 on the R&B chart, #1 on the Cash Box 100, #2 on the Hot 100 and #15 on the Adult Contemporary chart. This performance is from Soul Train on May 4, 1974.
Gladys Knight & The Pips won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for the song. That same night, they had won their first Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for "Midnight Train To Georgia".
The song has been covered by many artists including 📻: Jennifer Hudson, Ruby Winters, Miles Jaye, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Linda George, David Sanborn, Joe Simon, Bob Luman, Sister Sledge, Johnny Mathis, Charmaine Clamor, Asha Puthli, The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sounds and more.
    Song Credits 📝:
    Gladys Knight- lead vocals
The Funk Brothers and assorted orchestra players- instrumentation
Gladys Knight, Bubba Knight, William Guest and Edward Patten- backing vocals
    Lyrics 🗒:
    It's sad to think
    We're not gonna make it
And it's gotten to the point
Where we just can't fake it
    For some ungodly reason
We just won't let it die (let it die)
I guess neither one of us (neither one of us)
Wants to be the first to say goodbye
    I keep wondering (wondering)
What I'm gonna do without you (do without you)
And I guess you must be
    Wondering that same thing too
So we go on, go on together
Living a lie (living a lie)
Because neither one of us (neither one of us)
Wants to be the first to say goodbye
Oh-oh-oh, everytime I find the nerve
Everytime I find the nerve to say I'm leaving (leaving)
    Old memories, those old memories
Get in my way (my way, my way)
Oh-oh-oh, Lord knows it's only me
Oh, He knows it's only me that I'm deceiving
Ooh, ooh, ooh, when it comes to saying goodbye
That's a simple word that I just cannot say
There can be no way, there can be no way (be no way)
This can have a happy ending (happy ending)
No, no, so we just go on (we go on)
    Hurting and pretending
    And, and convincing ourselves
To give it just one more try (one more try)
Because neither one of us (neither one of us)
Ooh, ooh, wants to be the first to say
Neither one of us (neither one of us)
Wants to be the first to say
Ooh, neither one of us (neither one of us)
Wants to be the first to say
    "Farewell, my love"
    Goodbye (goodbye)
Gladys Knight & The Pips Info 📰:
Gladys Knight & The Pips were a R&B, Soul and Funk family music group from Atlanta, Georgia, that remained active on the music charts and performing circuit for over three decades starting from the early 1950s. The group has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards winning three times. Gladys Knight has received an additional four Grammy Awards as a solo artist/collaborator. The group has also won seven American Music Awards. Gladys Knight & The Pips are ranked as the ninth most successful act in The Billboard Top 40 Book of R&B and Hip-Hop Hits. They were also ranked No. 91 on VH1's Top 100 Artists of Rock n' Roll. Gladys Knight is ranked #101 on Rolling Stone's list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. Gladys Knight is known as "The Empress Of Soul".
Starting out as simply The Pips in 1952, derived from a cousin's nickname, the founding members were Gladys Knight, brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight and cousins Eleanor Guest and William Guest. After a couple of years performing in talent shows, the group signed with Brunswick Records in 1957, recording a couple of singles that failed to chart. Brenda Knight and Eleanor Guest eventually left the group and were replaced by another cousin, Edward Patten, and a non-relative, Langston George in 1959. This lineup produced the group's first hit single: "Every Beat Of My Heart". After the single was released on three different record labels, they changed their name to Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1961. Langston George left the group in 1961 and Gladys Knight left the group in 1962 to start a family with musician Jimmy Newman. Gladys Knight rejoined the group in 1964 and that group lineup: Gladys Knight ,Merald "Bubba" Knight, William Guest, Eddie Patten, continued on together until the group's disbandment in 1989.
The group reached commercial success after signing with Motown Records in 1966. After a year and a half, the group recorded the first hit single version of the song: "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", in 1967, which led to several hit singles for Motown's Soul Records record label, including the songs: "Nitty Gritty", "Friendship Train", "If I Were Your Woman", "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" and the Grammy-winning "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)", before leaving Motown's Soul Records record label for Buddah Records in 1973.
At Buddah Records, they recorded the hit songs: "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "I Feel A Song (In My Heart)" and their Grammy-winning and number-one hit single, "Midnight Train To Georgia". In 1974, they recorded the soundtrack to the successful film: Claudine, with producer Curtis Mayfield, which included the songs: "On And On", "The Makings Of You" and "Make Yours A Happy Home".
Contractual difficulties with the group's record labels forced the group to record side projects from 1977 until 1980 when they signed with Columbia Records. Later hit songs included: "Landlord", "Save The Overtime (For Me)" and the Grammy-winning single "Love Overboard".
In 1985 Gladys Knight collaborated on the hit song: That's What Friends Are For, with Dionne Warwick, Elton John and Stevie Wonder. The single was released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. It was a massive hit, becoming the number-one single of 1986 in the United States, and winning the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year. It raised more than $3 million for its social cause. In 1989, after one final tour as Gladys Knight & The Pips, the group disbanded with The Pips retiring and Gladys Knight embarking on a successful solo career.
Following the group's amicable disbandment in 1989, Edward Patten and William Guest formed their own production company in Detroit called: Guest And Patten Productions, later renamed the Crew Entertainment Company. Edward Patten was diagnosed with diabetes, which led to amputations of both of his legs and being confined to a wheelchair. He passed away from complications from the disease on February 25, 2005 in Livonia, Michigan. William Guest continued to lead the company with other members of Edward Patten's family until his passing from congestive heart failure in Detroit, Michigan on December 24, 2015. Two years prior, William Guest and his sister, Dame Dhyana Ziegler, released his autobiography: Midnight Train From Georgia: A Pip's Journey, about his life and career.
Gladys Knight had a chicken and waffles restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia that bared her name: Gladys Knight's Chicken & Waffles, which opened in 1997 but closed down in 2017. It was owned and operated by her son Shanga Hankerson.
In 2007, Bubba Knight and William Guest, along with a third man, Neil Taffe (one of Gladys Knight's background singers), appeared in a commercial for Geico. On August 23, 1997, original member of The Pips': Eleanor Guest, passed away from heart failure. Former member of The Pips' Langston George would pass away on March 19, 2007 from congestive heart failure as well.
Merald "Bubba" Knight still continues to oversee his sister's career, by being her tour manager and occasionally joining Gladys Knight onstage during live performances. Gladys Knight recorded the theme song for the James Bond film: Licence To Kill, in 1989, which became a top ten single in the UK. Two years later, she released her 1991 album: Good Woman, which included the top five R&B hit song: "Men", and Grammy-nominated duet version of Karyn White's 1988 song: "Superwoman", recorded with Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. Her 1994 album: Just For You, featured the hits "I Don't Wanna Know" and her cover of Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road", and went gold.
Gladys Knight has published two books: At Home With Gladys Knight (2001) and Between Each Line Of Pain And Glory: My Life Story (1998). She also received an Honorary Doctorate in Performing Arts, from Shaw University.
Gladys Knight still records and performs her music live on stage in 2024. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she sometimes leads the Saints Unified Voices choir.
