Gladys is one of the few rare singers the world has been blessed with. She sounds the same on her albums as she does in person. In my opinion, she is the greatest female singer I have ever heard. She has a very rare ability to touch place in me that I didn't even know existed and I am definitely not an emotional person. I buy most albums because I liked a certain song or songs on the album. I buy Gladys Knight albums because I love her voice and style, no matter what she sings. The male singer for me is Stevie Wonder.

Midnight Special was not an amateur night show, it only had the top talent of the day. It brought live music into our homes Friday night. As parents went to sleep, our music came in live; it was the show not to be missed, though it trialed off in the 80’s, because frankly so did the talent 😂

@@TheFargo116 there are several books in the library on the subject of Soul Train and it's influence on American culture. I think there might also may be a documentary film on Don Cornelius the Creator and producer of Soul Train. The show not only had influence on American black culture, music, business and fashion, it also had a huge non-black nationwide audience, but marketed it's commercial advertising on products specifcally to the black audience. Dick Clark tried repeatedly to buy the show from it's Creator, but Don Cornelius refused to sell at any cost, because a nationally syndicated show with a huge audience of young people of all colors was black empowerment. Soul Trains viewers wanted to see black artists that wouldn't get showcased on American Bandstand. They also wanted to see the latest dance styles and the coolest fashions. Things common to all teens. If you ask just about any white person who watched the show at the time, they will tell you, that it was probably less about the blackness of the show and more about the music, fashion and dance. They didn't have much interest in Sulpher-H or Afrosheen, but they could tell you what kind of products they were for what people.

What a great show. It came on late at night and I was too young to stay up. Ha! Bruh, Amateur Night was the Apollo, in the hood of Harlem, NY, USA, which although it had been around from the '30's or 40's, did not start being televised until sometime in the '80's. Midnight Special WAS NOT THAT!!! There were NO amateurs on that show. Maybe you thought so because it had a dated appearance, between the clothing & the television reception...no high definition back then. They had different artists & guest hosts every week ( I believe it came on Fridays), and many, like Gladys Night & the Pips or the Isley Brothers, were iconic legendary artists. Gladys' brother, Bubbah, was the one closest to her on stage. She is absolutely amazing as a vocalist & can still sing like that, which is crazy! She been hittin over 50 years, & has the distinction of havin the 1st video to feature break dancing, which came to light in the '80's. The song was, 'Save the Overtime (For Me)'. You should also check That's What Friends are For, an all star collaboration to fight AIDS, with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, & Elton John. There was also Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, which came on Saturday nights. The beauty of those shows was that they had bands of different styles on, including some instrumental groups & artists like, the Crusaders (check out Street Life). I remember seeing the incredible jazz guitarist George Benson, who began to sing & became highly successful pop artist, on Midnight Special, jamming with country artist Glen Campbell, who could blow really nice on guitar as well. Yeah also check George Benson when you get a chance. His singing breakthrough was, This Masquerade, from the album, Breezin. Only one vocal on the album. The next one had six songs & 4 of them were vocals. Eventually he started getting hit songs, collaborating with Quincy & Rod Temperton (Thriller, Off the Wall), & had big hits with Give Me the Night, and Turn Your Love Around.

Unlike today , we did not have a lot of amateur shows. We listened to the certified stars on the Midnight Special. American Bandstand,, The Flip Wilson Show. , Soul Train, Ed Sullivan, Sonny and Cher, The only time I heard amateurs was on Amateur Hour, and Showtime at the Apollo and Star Search where I first heard Luther Vandross .(and he was no amateur) , Thinking about the music today, I realize being a child of the sixties I was part of very musically spoiled generation . We heard Patti Label, Gladys Knight, Earth Wind and Fire, Rose Royce, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, the Ohio Players, Aretha Franklin, and the Ojays all at one house party as the DJ would spin record after record ! Wow and we took it all for granted!

Midnight Special aired at...well...midnight (depending on what time zone you were in) on Saturday nights on NBC. If memory serves, I believe this is the show that Saturday Night Live replaced on NBC. And no, it was not an "Amateur Hour." Quite to the contrary. This show was a non-stop rock concert featuring some of the biggest artists of the time. Usually they'd showcase a number of artists who had hits on the pop charts that week. (No doubt their record companies were pushing them out to perform on this show as it was *THE* show of its kind in America at the time.). Each week, just as Saturday Night Live would do in years hence, they had a different host each week. Usually a musical artist, but not always. On this particular episode, no doubt from 1973, when this song was charting, The Bee Gees were the hosts. Which explains why they were introducing Gladys Knight at the Pips. I luvs me some Gladys Knight. One of the most underrated female vocalists of the 20th century. I would put her easily in the top 10 female vocalists of all time. Check out a few other Gladys Knight and the Pips songs, like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (a completely different sound than Marvin Gaye's iconic take on the song), "If I Were Your Woman," "I've Got to Use My Imagination," and of course their biggest hit, "Midnight Train to Georgia."
Speaking of Amateur Hour, there used to be a show on TV back in the '50s called Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour, and as I recall, there was one little girl who appeared on the show and she knocked 'em out. That little girl's name was Gladys Knight. Long before the Pips came along.

This was definitely not an amateur show! An amateur would have been lucky being a go for, for the big acts that were performing on this show! Only the best of the time were invited here!

All HAIL the Great GLADYS!!!! (And PROPS to the precise PIPS)
Miss “The Midnight Special.” It was one of the few times I could stay up past my bedtime with my mother as a kid to watch. Elite and rising act’s only on this show as some comments have shared.❤️
And, yeah☺️Gladys has had that same iconic, gorgeous face since childhood:

Dude, this is nowhere near amateur night. If you weren't among the best ever you didn't get anywhere near The Midnight Special. It was a showcase for the rest of us to be able to see and hear the greatest talent ever. Don't you dare call it amateur night.

Singing competition shows weren't a thing then. Gladys & the Pips had been hugely successful for about a decade by the time this was taped. Midnight Special was what everybody watched before Saturday Night Live was created in that time slot.

What's up JJ & JJ fam! I'm just repeating what someone else has said on here - by no means, was The Midnight Special any kind of amateur or "trying to be discovered" showcase. Nope... it was for already established music acts... or acts on the come-up... (to possibly enhance their already established local or regional audience). But I don't believe that the Mid Spec showcased any artists, without a record deal already. Just putting that out there... to give Gladys & The Pips their proper shine and recognition! 😉

The Midnight Special was definitely not an amateur night. It showcased musical talent in their prime. We were just very very lucky at the time to see all of this talent on a late night tv show.

The Midnight Special was like - a mini-concert every Friday night of famous acts during the 70s, and early 80s. I tried my best to stay up to watch it every week, like at 6 and 7 years old. Back then, music was everywhere on tv. All the variety shows, had musical guests. Just as a snapshot - The Jacksons had a variety show (pls check these out on youtube), The Osmonds had a variety show, Cher - had a variety show, there was the Carol Burnett Show, Flip Wilson had a variety show. Then was Soul Train on Saturdays, American Bandstand on Saturdays, Solid Gold and Disco Fever on Saturday night....And - that is not EVEN counting all the other dance shows that came from the 80s. It really is a rabbit hole once you go down it.

For sure not amateurs- lots of very established artists appeared on the Midnight Special. However, sometimes they did showcase artists with new hits kinda new on the scene, just breaking through. This group though, had been around a while already. Already had a name. She sure gets down towards the end of the song. Class act Gladys Knight and her Pips.
