The absolute NOSTALGIA between the video games and hearing “Reptile” just before he comes to life is what makes this moment one of the best in cinematic history (for me at least).
And that hidden character shoulda whooped Liu’s ass. Saw this in the theater in ‘95 and 26 years later it still pisses me off that Reptile didn’t murder him lol
Tho my question still stands unanswered, what was that statue that snatched the actual reptile up which it clearly is trying to get away from, wrapping him up in tendrils and he became OG reptile, then by the end it turns back into a statue and the creature was released?
@@EckoUntitl I really wanted Hiroyuki Sanada to Play Shang Tsung he would be the next Great version of Shang Tsung, but i'm glad he's getting Justice as Scorpion.
I’m pretty sure that hearing the MKII announcer voice declare “REPTILE”, and the CGI creature morphing into Reptile’s classic green ninja form like a hidden character being unlocked - and then immediately going to town on Liu Kang - was far and away the greatest moment of my childhood
Fun trivia: This fight wasn't part of the original cut of the movie, neither the Scorpion x Cage in Scorpion's Lair. It was reshot and both fights were coreographed by Robin Shou (Liu Kang actor) and both were considered by far the best fights in the movie.
There are rules to Mortal Kombat. 1 vs 1. Johnny Cage probably let Liu Kang do his thing without interrupting out of respect for Mortal Kombat. Just my 2 cents.
@@thisisyou420 annihilation has some annoying scenes but it does have its redeeming moments too, like the jax and cyrax fight was cool and the smoke and liu kang fight was sick, especially the music in that scene.
God, it's not just the music, it's the sound effects. Those big, meaty, heavy thuds and crunches that just sound like they swung a bag of cement at eachothers faces. So fucking good.
Absolutely. Just as the exposition itself. From appearance directly into the fight. But most importantly, this scene so relatable. Whenever I see an ugly bug in the house, I become a real Liu Kang myself.
This was always my favorite fight in the movie. The pumping soundtrack plus Reptile's sheer aggression plus the fantastic choreography all came together to create several minutes of pure adrenaline.
That is one of the reasons why this movie was great. It was PG13 movie which adapted full of gore and violence games. They created game like fighting situations appropriate for a movie. Added iconic music to it and had cool fighting scenes. Without gore, fatalities and a lot of characters this movie managed to capture hearts of many viewers. To this day I still get small goosebumps when I watch this scene. It just feels like a game and movie situation. When you hear that techno soundtrack kick in and announcer say "Reptile" I just remember Liu Kang yelling and doing his iconic bicycle kick which kicked "Reptile" trough the same hole.
The way they announce “Reptile” was perfect.. Techno music, Iconic Mortal Kombat characters, and cool catch phrases! The video games laid the ingredients to make a great movie franchise and the new one blew it!
The new one has SO much potential and totally blew it with absolute shit writing and story telling. I thought all the fight scenes were awesome, but holy shit did the storyline suck balls.
The good thing is that it's such a powerful and iconic IP that they have no choice but try again to give us something actually great. Cause everyone knows what Mortal Kombat is.
Yup.. I kinda feel bad for young people nowadays, aka generation Z. All their childhood is focused on Facebook and Instragram bullshit. What a crappy way to grow up.
christoforos meziriadis if you would have seen this in the movie theaters everyone stood up and went crazy as soon as they heard the name reptile LOL and they were cheering for him as he was kicking Lu Kang’s ass hahaha
The way the voice over says 'Reptile'. That is just perfection. I could cry it's so beautiful. And Reptile is so true to character as well. Much more aggressive and rapid than scorpion and subzero .
Watched this in theatres in '95. Audience lost their shit at 1:41 when we heard MK2 Shao Khan voice say "Reptile", people were cheering and clapping and jumping up as it was a big surprise as he wasn't advertised any where and was kept a secret. Wish more movies were like this. Nowadays they show you everything in trailers.
I remember the exact same thing. Now they'd have 10 minute pre-release clips where you could see each scene Reptile was in, and how they did the effects for him as well, and an interview with the actor.
Love that “Reptile” announcement and the fighting because this movie may have been hated by newer gen of people but i grew up on this shit when my mother used to watch this movie when i was a boy and love how you can hear Liu’s sound effects when using the combo kick repeatedly and adding it into the film is just amazing
I was 7 and my brother was 8. Reptile was my favorite. I remember loving this movie and at the same time being furious that reptile wasn’t a Ninja! Then, this scene started to unfold and I went absolutely ballistic. The best.
Yo my dad took me to see this when I was 9 and the pop when you heard reptile was deafening. Didn’t even hear liu scream when he kicked him through a wall
a lot of people liked the scorpion vs johnny cage fight in the 95 movie but I think this was the best one. The music, the fact Liu Kang does the bicycle kick, Reptile being hidden and Liu kang being perceptive enough to "see" him (basically a secret in a secret), but also if you watched the scene closely, Reptile actually does an MK3 combo kick to Liu Kang.
Ya it's not sloppy at all. Most actors for these type of movies had real marital arts training back in the day and it showed very well. Now the new actors of today only train just for certain fight scenes and it looks awful.
Whoever decided to use the reptile Shao Kahn voice from the game was a genius. The sudden and unique qualities it added especially being unexpected really add to the freneticness of the sequence.
Fun Fact: In the original MK game, to unlock the Reptile fight, you must perform a double flawless victory and perform a fatality in the end. It turns out, Johnny Cage did this by beating Goro twice and performed a stage Fatality on him.
"I'm in a hostile environment, completely unprepared, surrounded by people that probably want to kick my ass... it's like being back in high school!" Linden Ashby was flawless as Cage.
Reptile in a 90's action movie take on the franchise : cool ninja dude that comes out swinging Reptile in the official canon games : Last time he did any damage was when Onaga took his body, has literally been a jobber since this movie came out.
Lets all be real: Liu Kang just made the *entire situation* harder on himself by accidently unlocking the Reptile secret boss fight with that throw into the statue.
@@Altered-Beast I don't like Liu Kang in the last games either. By the way, talking about the other characters, the story of turning people into robots, new era, etcetera... No.
Let's all be real. Reptile won that fight. Only plot armor saved that man from permanent damage being kicked through a brick wall, and then into what I believe is a concrete one
@@Altered-Beast 2021 Liu Kang was good, he just didn’t have enough time to redeem himself due to the fact that he was a supporting character and not one of the main characters.
Agreed. They never did explain how he got a "body" though lol. Reptile did not mess around here and its BS the outcome of this fight. He gets the badass music, moveset, but because Kang is the hero. This is one of my favorite moments but also most hated. In fact every Kang victory is lol. Love Reptile's theme regardless.
Same thing happened at the theater I went to. There was like this building rumble as we all saw what was coming, but the the dude said, "Reptile," and people started screaming.
This is still one of the most epic character introductions of all time. The fact that the umk3 announcer says " Reeptile" in the midst of changing really drives home the video game element. I wish there was more.
Theres even more: Most fights have two or three "stages" if you analyze them. Goro can only be defeated with cheesy tricks. Otherrealm has a tower that must be climbed up.
This is without a shadow of a doubt the best adaptation of a fighting game to film. It's impressive to see that the actors were very well chosen and this masterpiece came out. Simply a fucking film!
this scene was filmed after most of the movie was done and crew had left test audiences had complained that there wasnt enough fights so robin shou and director made this scene that robin choreographed himself i think he had a few busted ribs during the making of it
2:16 In an interview, Robin Shou revealed this is where he fractured a couple of ribs. Got thrown in a pillar 10 times and they used the take where he hurt his ribs and kept going. THAT is dedication to your craft and I have mad respect for Robin Shou for making this fight scene great.
This whole fight is badass because it almost feels like there's real animosity, like Reptile is really trying to kill him. Maybe it was a real fight caught on screen? ;)
TheXabl0 ....it’s funny there really wasn’t animosity between them but Robin Shou wanted to get the fight right and unfortunately he did the scene with like 4 broken ribs ....so really reptile was really kicking his ass for real even though he didn’t want to. Still the fight is awesome
This scene goes so crazy. The music, choreography, stunt work, and pure aggression in it. Also, I like that Liu charged up his bicycle kick for a few seconds like the original games.
Reptile's aggression was just on another level. No exposition, no talking. The beat drops and he kicks you through a wall.
He fighting out of rage
Don't forget the "reptile"part.

Fun trivia: This fight wasn't part of the original cut of the movie, neither the Scorpion x Cage in Scorpion's Lair. It was reshot and both fights were coreographed by Robin Shou (Liu Kang actor) and both were considered by far the best fights in the movie.

Reptile can go invisible, but Johnny Cage can vanish from an entire scene.
