Welcome to the first part of my Metal Gear Retrospective series. In this first entry we will be delving deep into the first adventure of Solid Snake, Operation Intrude N313. This video will cover Metal Gear's development history, the beginnings of it's creator Hideo Kojima, his cinema inspirations, summarize its story and review its gameplay. If you enjoyed the video please like, share comment and subscribe. This will help it in the algorithm and support the creation of a part 2!
I really love this super in-depth retrospective on the first game that I've rarely seen other reviewers cover to this extent and contextualizing how Kojima directed the development of these games while as a young and upcoming employee at Konami. Looking forward to the rest of these retrospective looks into the series and I do hope this video gets more views since you typically review retro FPS games and this is a nice change of pace.
This is a fascinating revelation. I am learning the similarity between Wolfenstein and Metal Gear's roots are even more poetic than I once thought. Wolfenstein 3D was inspired by Wolfenstein, a slower, stealthier title, but was transformed into a fast-paced shooter. Metal Gear was inspired by a fast-paced shooter, but was transformed into a slower, stealthier title. Reverse origins. My mind is blown.
Kirk, with videos like this one, Splinter Cell retrospective and Doom 3 retrospective, you truly are the rising star of TH-cam gaming videos community! I never played Metal Gear games, with the sole exception of 10 or so hours in MGS 5. But this video is so good it makes me wait eagerly for the continuation of your Metal Gear retrospective.
Perfect work on this one. Thx for the massive effort and the huge background infos. One of the best retrospective. Also like your mindset. Your vid will be shared, you deserved way more views for this. Thx for doing this. 🤘
I always love your videos. Very high production. I found your channel ever since ION FURY. MGS is the childhood series that I bought my PlayStation for. Mgs1 ps1. Mgs2 ps2. Mgs4 ps3.
I became a metal gear fan watching my dad play through this game when I was 7 on summer vacation back in the mid 90s. The music was everything. Then Solid came out when I was in middle school, bought it with Quake 2 and the rest is history!
I still can play MG and MG2 but UnMetal broke me, that game plays how I remember what they play like. If Konami had some guts they’d get the UnMetal team to do a Sonic Mania style treatment to both Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2 😁 (a fellow gamer can dream)
One other thing I don’t think you mentioned: back when Kojima was still trying to make a shoot-em-up, the protagonist was going to be named Gray Fox. When the idea changed to Metal Gear, he kept Gray Fox and had him being captured because of his previous attempted infiltration as an Easter egg to the failed shooter concept.
I am really looking forward to the rest of this series. I hope you have a section about Project Itoh in your discussion. Also, years ago a few fellow members from Something Awful Forums translated the PC version of "Policenauts" from scratch. Can't remember why but thought you might be interested. Good luck.
I would say great video but its not a video. It's a great documentary/retrospective movie. I hope you do all the Metal Gear games. I'm writing this comment halfway through the by the. way.
Thank you! I wanted this to feel more like a movie compared to my other content. It’s metal gear it’s gotta feel cinematic! I’m hoping to work through the mainline games much like my splinter cell series. Depends on how it performs so please share!
Dude's brilliant, but only has 25k subs. Sniperwolf has no talent, is a convicted criminal, doxes people, and steals other people's content, yet has 33 mil subs. The world needs to end.

You had me at "First Part".
Hideo Kojima is to gaming what Christopher Nolan is to movies, in both the best and the worst way possible.
Excellent comment
haha truth
Overblown budgets for sure😂
True, I think there’s a lot of Paul Verhoeven and James Cameron in his style as well.
Such a shame that this video doesn't have the views that it should. Top quality right here
Kirk, you nailed this one. I would love to see more retrospectives in the future. Keep it coming. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I hope to make more 😁

To me a lot of gaming is like that. Gaming history is just one big tree with all the branches connected in some way.
Just finished it on the master collection. It was fun , now onto Metal Gear 2!
You deserve so much more recognition on this platform! Your video production is top quality.
Great video, as always!
Thank you!!!
Great Retrospective, really enjoy learning all the bit of background that help form the Metal Gear games.
New and brave. Good luck with the new projects and thanks for interesting videos!
Excellent video, hope it get more views
Wooow I loved Penguin Adventure, I had it on GameBoy !! No idea Kojima made that masterpiece as well! Great piece !

Truly excellent video that fully explores the creation of this classic.
Congratulations, looking forward to part 2.👍
Good video 👍 looking forward to the next one
Great background story on a legendary title of the MSX-2 system. I could only experience this years later on an emulator on the PC.
Same! And thank you!

Knew we'd be getting some good mgs content when the collection dropped.
This is perfect timing, just watched Leadhead's retrospective of the series and now I'll get your take. Hells yeah.
Nice! This sticks to the first game but you should be able to glean some good info from it.

Absolutely loved this review 🎉 would you consider doing a review of Nox.

Wowww this is way more in-depth than I expected
I didnt play the msx version till later in life but the nes version metal gear is awesome! Great video man!
Stealth is King.
Sneak King
Commenting for algorithm, been a Kirk fan for a while for his stealth reviews
Great video, super excited for the next one in this series!!

Can't wait før part 2🤩 this was amazing
Are we still getting a Conviction retrospective
Yes

Can't remember why but thought you might be interested. Good luck.
Still waiting for Splinter Cell Conviction and Blacklist review man
44:45 I see what you did here XD
I found interesting that the "Guns of Navarone" inspired both Metal Gear and Quake 2.
It's pretty fascinating, I wasn't too familiar with the movie before this video.
That sure is a good video, and logic, talking about between the most best gamee ever. 👌👌👌🖖

Is the port on steam worth buying?
Yeah solid way to play it. I prefer emulation personally but MSX emulators can be a little tricky.
Dude's brilliant, but only has 25k subs. Sniperwolf has no talent, is a convicted criminal, doxes people, and steals other people's content, yet has 33 mil subs. The world needs to end.
Yes cover other video game genres besides FPS games
Too videogamey, janky and overly complicated for my taste. Being a secret agent in real life is probably easier than this! 😅
Unfortunately, Kojima would soon run out of 80s movies to rip off
Was spoiling the whole game's story really necessary?
A countdown for this? How disappointing
It might not be what you wanted, but at least give it a shot 🤷🏻♂️
