i was instantly hooked when i first played resistance FOM, the series puts an emphasis on "an unkown enemy" and "inevitable annihilation", really makes you feel like humanity is constantly fighting an uphill battle and this is later proven in sequels when you finally see the devastation the chimera had on the ENTIRE planet.
It was so unique at the time, a game where despite your best efforts, humanity is losing this war, badly. I still remember seeing the cover, that clearly alien skull in a human helmet and thinking "what the hell happened here?" and the fact the game actually backs up that symbolism is so cool.
Ah, Resistance: Fall of Man. Even with its many, many, flaws it still remains my favorite game of all time. The concept of aliens invading in the 1950's is simply brilliant.
@@Gnardstingler I’d say the flaws aren’t that many and they’re forgivable since this game was developed to be one of the first releases for the PS3. It basically came out on Launch day with the console itself. PS3 games from 2006 were very rough compared to PS3 games from 2011.
One thing that made me appreciate this game a lot more was the eventual realization of just how frequently I was passing over grenade pickups because I was at capacity; the takeaway being that you can use grenades with reckless abandon because the game is unusually generous with them. Most of the game's bullshit enemy spawns can't compete with panic-throwing a few grenades their way.
I remember playing this game as a kid and being terrified by the chimera, unlike in the halo universe where the covenant look goofy. The variety of chimera species is basically all of earths creatures turned into monsters. The situation you’re placed in is hopeless, all the hybrids you’re killing are basically humans that got captured and turned. We probably never even got the chance to see a pure chimera
I know I'm late, but just last week, I played through all 3 games, and I can easily say this one is my favorite of the three, and one of my favorite games of all time. I grew up with this game, it was my first ever FPS, and god do I look back on it fondly, and honestly, I think it still holds up better than a lot of modern FPS's. It properly tells an interesting twist on the whole "alien invasion" cliche, by having it where, not only were the Chimera on Earth before humans, but all the Chimera you fight in the game, aren't even real Chimera. They're humans, turned into a hybrid of both races. And they genuinely feel like an unstoppable force, that kinda fills you with more and more dread as the game goes on, realizing they can't really be stopped. Not only that, but the missions when you were actually within their bases, or within that cursed subway mission, genuinely felt horrifying, given the Chimera's aesthetic, and the usual lack of music. Just the horrifying roars of the Chimera and the whizzing of Bullseye shots. The worldbuilding is fantastic in this one, and it sincerely makes me want to learn more about the universe and to keep playing after it's over. It's a shame the next two entries were a massive tonal shift from this one, and overall, in my opinion, worse games.
The multiplayer was crazy fun. Spent a couple years setting up matches. Even made some pretty good friends online. And if anyone remembers the clan, P$, hello to TheRooster!
Don’t remember this game legitimately being in any GoTY discussions honestly. 2007 was perhaps the best year for game releases of all time. Bioshock, Halo 3, CoD4, Mass Effect, Uncharted and many others dominated that year
Personally given I was 10 years old at the time, I also don't remember it being a contender either especially with the banging year that was 2007 but some publications did have it listed. Hard to compete with so many incredible games though!
Ah jeez, I've always believed that 07 was one of the best years ever for releases. Recently started getting back into gaming and it's good to know that it's just me that thinks that
The one thing I'll always praise Resistance: Fall of Man for, is its physics engine. God the ragdolls were great, the number of props you could interact with were numerous, heck, breaking glass was satisfying as hell because it was so well done! Let me know if you felt the same!
The first game felt a lot superior to the second game technically. Much better physics, lighting, and shaders. The second game had a cheap feel to it in comparison, but it had fun coop. I didn't play much of the 3rd game but I remember the level design and pacing not as enjoyable as the first game.
I replayed the whole series recently and I absolutely loved Resistance 1, way more than 2, and 3 is a masterclass. So finding a channel that expresses how I feel about this series is great.
As i said on the Darksiders video you keep bringing up my childhood memories. I am happy i found your channel. Also we need Resistance 4, Killzone 5, Prototype 3, Darksiders 4, Ryse 2 also another InFamous and Brother in Arms would be nice. Maybe i missed something but these are a few.
This is one of those games that makes me wish I had a Sony brand console. I really liked the idea of an FPS that took place after WW2, but before the times we live in now. Not to mention the alter history with futuristic weaponry and all that. I could maybe emulate these games, but honestly is it even possible these days? Yes, you can find the emulators themselves, but finding the games now is close to impossible.
I 100% understand where you're coming from but if you have a solid PC I've heard the PS3 emulator is super solid and the Resistance series is one of the few PS3 exclusives that has not seen a price skyrocket. You can still find them online for around $10 each. I love the setting for this series and I hope Insomniac shows the series some more love soon!
The games are very common and cheap, I just bought the trilogy recently, the first and second for $6 each and the third $12 and they all came in their case with manual, that's about how they're mostly sold for
My son got me hooked on this game. After playing campaign several times went right to online clan battles. Best of times. Wish they would bring this back. Met so many cool people; young and old!
That's really awesome, I had a similar experience with showing my Dad Halo so I definitely relate. Resistance needs to come back though, it's been far too long!
I will say the bullet sponginess and difficulty of the enemies to me feels like thematic story telling insomniac is basically showing us an enemy that could conquer and wipe all the worlds armies. It also adds to the oppressive atmosphere which really makes the game feel tense. The tankiness seems to really be intentional especially when you read the reports which explain the chimeras powers as being caused by a rapidly fast metabolism which accelerates their healing and strength. I will agree they went a tad overboard but I feel like it was cooler to get nearly overpowered enemies as opposed to enemies made of tissue paper
I played this game so many times as a kid. I always played split screen with my dad or little brother on bean bags in front of the TV. It's such a good game and I'm glad others remember it fondly as well.
Thank you mate, I appreciate the support! That was my feeling going into Fall of Man. I remembered enjoying it back in the day, but no where near the level of 2 and 3. So, either 2 and 3 are going to be some of the best games ever... or I clicked more this time with Fall of Man.

Subscribed because this video alone. New to the channel, but I love this game and I'm so happy to see someone give it the love and attention I feel like it's always deserved!
4:50 I want a game like that. Just a large world that you progressively move through linearly. Make it not that wide or something, so you're always moving forward. Or maybe you're trying to stay ahead of something behind you. And you're just fighting one man in a HUGE war that you just keep running into. Break into no mans land midway through, etc. End with giant attack on the enemys line. You're just a cog. Maybe gain a squad to command, then a platoon, etc.
This game came out at a very exciting time for video games, I remember the insanity that was the hype of the graphics at the time, the games looked sooo good, I knew I was witnessing the beginning of the age of true photo realistic graphics
I absolutely loved this game, I got it in 2007 with my PS3 along with Formula One Championship Edition, I put so much time in to these games because I loved them, especially Resistance Fall of Man because I loved the story set in in England where I'm from, the levels in Grimsby, Manchester and particularly Nottingham which is very close to my home town will always be remembered by me, great times.
Dude I used to play this game once every day when I got home from school with my dad. We ended up playing it a total of 25 times from start to finish and it was just such a cool alien game back them. Plus it was one the ,at the time, brand new ps3 so the experience just got better and better. I never played any other Resistance games so this particular one will stay in my heart until I die.
Resistance: fall of man was one of my first two PS3 games. It and it’s sequels never leave my mind. I really hope Sony gives us a new installment in the future.
What I like about the series is that every game feels diferent. The first one is like an Hale game, the second like a CoD game and the third wich is my favorite felt like a played Half Life 2. Oh, I remember when I bought and played both Resistance 3 and Singularity, what a great week was.
Those comparisons are really spot on mate and I think there is something to be said for trying new things in series. Nothing wrong with giving something new a try but I agree, the third is my favourite gameplay wise. Singularity is a great game (have a video on that as well)
I really liked the human allies. They may be weak but in numbers they sure as hell could put up a fight! And the fact that the humans could go into melee with the chimera AND WIN was awesome.
As a kid; I was lucky enough to play on the OG Phat PS3 60gigchad in size and price. Fall of man and Motor storm were my jam and many others. Resistance 2 multiplayer for me was where it was at and those sweet leaderboards.
RFOM multi-player is still one of the best FPS' to ever exist. Most people don't realize the skill level involved and believe it to be another shooter. It was so ahead of its time and sadly, I don't think shooters will ever replicate this style of game, especially when it comes to competitive gaming. I look back fondly on this era and think of all the good times. Nx^ for life
I really wish Sony would bring back this series in some capacity, at least a proper remaster is needed of the 3 mainline games. Would love a new title too of course.
You forgot a few weapons that fair enough are ng+ only, but are a lot of fun, the Reaper dual wield carabines with it's auto aim, the Arc Charger with bolts of electricity that arc from enemy to enemy, the Dragon which like the name implies is a flamethrower, and the Splitter which is hits like a truck and like the name implies can be split mid air to cover more ground
My second favorite in the series my only regret is we didn't to more awesome battles in the game. Most of the game you fight solo or with allies that due in one hit. This was best played with split screen co-op. My brother and I played the hell out this game in co-op and it never got old. Game still looks great IMO, even as old as it is. It definitely still holds up.
Truly love this game and the series,..I took a break from gaming between 02 and 07.,got back into it when the ps3 was released, this and uncharted were the first games I bought for the system,..still fondly remember playing Resistance on my large screen fully immersed in the world and action,..I still play all three every so often, one of the best shooters in my opinion...wish they would make a Resistance 4 on ps5
Congratulations. Love your channel and I am so happy to see resistance on your channel as I love the game and its franchise. Good luck for your channel. If possible please do a retrospective on binary domain its such under rated game in my opinion
Easily in my top 5 games ever. Me and my buddy wasted so many hours playing co op into the early morning that we used to have dreams about it! The co op is what put it over the top!
Gotta love a game where the US just sits out as half the planet gets wiped out then goes "Alright fine" and then is portrayed as the unquestionable hero that saves us all. Hold on why does that feel familiar?....... Great video man! Glad someone else likes the game! Also its weird how youtube recognises the game's title but displayes SOCOM4 image xD
I remember how bad it I wanted resistance when I first got a ps3 in 2011 See in middle school I did a history report on Nathan hale’s namesake and alternate history is just so cool to me Despite the game already being old when I got it in 2012/13 I remember loving it to death the campaign was so fun and the guns characters world and reports were so enthralling and really made me love the world. The first game will always be my favorite just because it feels the most fully realized. I like the setting the characters and narration feel great. While Hale is stoic and silent it works because the other characters are engaging and at least for me created tension in the game cause while I knew hale would be fine the other characters weren’t super soldiers and I was always worried that the chimera might wipe them out. In conclusion I love resistance fall of man so much
I only knew Insomniac from "Resistance", so i thought we would see more "gritty" games from them. I wish they would Remaster All the games. Everyone should play them.
Do you know about the bullseye bomb and the ability to launch mini rockets out of the rocket launcher I didn't see you mention that about the weapons. Also the map glitching in this game online offline was so much fun you could get out of the map climb on top of things get into weird places.
I don't think the added news from the Church of England suing Sony led to the game selling well/better. I live in the UK was very into gaming around that time and had never heard of this "controversy"
They made this game in 2 years?! Now it takes studios 5 years to make a shitty game. I want to go back to these medium fidelity graphics age of video games where development was faster/cheaper and they actually focused on gameplay more than how pretty a game was (even tho this game looked really good too)
Resistance 3 was one of the best FPS from the 7th generation. There, I said it. Sony had a great FPS series exclusive, it just didnt gave it that much of a chance after R3 flopped cause the 1st two were kinda meh but R3 reached its full potential. Unfortunately it was too late for the series and sony went for Killzone instead
It just never seemed like Sony was that interested in Resistance which is a real shame because as much as I love Killzone, Resistance was the better of the two hands down!
I remember people like the hip hop gamer who were big at the time of early TH-cam, would show this game when telling you what 360 couldn't do graphically. Along with the show, and God of war 3, I was convinced that Sony was just superior hardware. I really enjoyed this game, my halo friends said they hated it but I just think they were haters lol.
the church got mad that a video game had the church as a setting? Where you are exclusively aiming at alien monsters, and not anything sacred? Glad/ disappointed the US isnt the only place where Christianity has some sensitive noise makers
Play this on the Vita so you have dual stick controls. Turn off the big auto aim square so that it plays like any other tps. It's still more difficult to aim under pressure than regular console games but the developers gave you a genius tool. And that tool is your main weapon which has ricochet homing rounds which evens up the odds so you end up saving your other weapons for the slower more powerful enemies, while you use your main weapon for the majority of the faster more plentiful enemies. Even if you only played it on the PSP, you should still give it a shot on PC or Vita so you get a completely different game.
@steelbear2063 Shit, my bad. I thought this was the psp game Resistance: Retribution. If anyone gets a chance you should try it on Vita or ppsspp on pc. It's one of the best Resistance games.
Great video. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I decided to subscribe. And I don't do that often. I played the entire series(even the handhelds), I read both novels; this was my favorite entry in the franchise. The only game I didn't finish was the PS Vita game. The story didn't keep my interest.
Glad you enjoyed the video mate and happy to have you hear as a part of the channel! I haven't actually tried to rank the series yet, maybe I'll do that after the Retribution video but I can see why Fall of Man would be a personal favourite because it's great.
i didn't know this game existed before this video but u can tell it was influenced a lot by half life , and thats not a bad thing , also amazing video as always
I loved resistance 1, 2, 3 & retribution but I didn't care for burning skys. I'd say the one thing I didn't like about resistance 3 was the ending cutscene. If they were using real world physics they would not have been able to scoop Capelli up inside a falling terraformer. That would have been more like wait for Capell to fall out the terraformer then catch him.
Ive paid an ungodly amount of money to keep myself in a PS 3 to this day, so I can keep playing 9 games: the Resistance, Killzone, and Infamous series. I just play them in a line over and over, though its getting hard to find good controllers. Lol
Its weird that insomniac basically killed the series themselves with 3, they set up all this potential and mystique in resistance 2 and then do a game thats tiny in scope with 3
You Know I would have loved to see what Resistance could have been if they stuck with their Starship Troopers inspired Premise fantastical doesn't mean bad or you can't connect with it Many people connect with Characters in fantasy stories inspite of the fantastical worlds they live.
I also love the resistance series, 1, and 3 are better then 2, i forgot how tuff the chimara are to take down, compared to grubs, or wolfenstein enemies, they are way more tanky.
@@MayorHairBear yeah and in resistance 3 they made the bullseye so much better, it was hard to hit your targets in 1, also love how 3 brought the upgrade system from ratchet and clank.

RFOM online was epic and so much fun. The single player campaign was also brilliant. Loved it.
Singularity is a great game (have a video on that as well)
I really like your video style! They're engaging and very well paced, always informative, and entertaining. Keep it up!!
Thank you so much mate, that really means a lot!
I really liked the human allies. They may be weak but in numbers they sure as hell could put up a fight! And the fact that the humans could go into melee with the chimera AND WIN was awesome.
One of my favorites. I really enjoyed playing the three in the series. I wish they'll remaster them all.
I'd love to see them get remastered!
I've read the comics and books played all the games and i just can't get enough of this games lore and world building
Had resistance 3 years ago. Never got to complete it. Now im playing 1. Gonna buy 2 and 3 very soon. Playing 3 again is going to ve amazing
This brings back memories
Oh the memories were flooding back revisiting this series, well and truly deserves to make a comeback
Congratulations man, you make great reviews and retrospectives, keep it up man !
Thank you mate, I really appreciate the support!
God resistance 1 and 2 where so integral to my preteen days. Love the video and channel!
Oh the nostalgia is strong isn't it 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video mate!
Remember borrowing this as a child and was scared shitless
Resistance definitely gave me the heebee jeebees when I was a kid!
Keep the videos coming man!!
This game had such a fun multiplayer mode too. Of course cod4 released next and took over for PS players
Resistance MP was always so much fun!
I miss these games
I hope to see the series make a comeback in the near future!
As a kid; I was lucky enough to play on the OG Phat PS3 60gigchad in size and price.
Fall of man and Motor storm were my jam and many others.
Resistance 2 multiplayer for me was where it was at and those sweet leaderboards.
Dude, I was there, what an amazing time! Motorstorm, Resistance, killzone and so many others! I’ll tell ya the HOURS lost on R2 multiplayer and Co-op!
Nx^ for life
Remember get this with my PS3 alongside with motorstorm in 2006 original bundle
This game stick with me since.. i replay it every 1-2 year
I really wish Sony would bring back this series in some capacity, at least a proper remaster is needed of the 3 mainline games. Would love a new title too of course.
I would love this series to make a come back, remaster, new entry, reboot whatever just gimme some more Chimera action!
Love this series but Sony only loves 3rd person action adventure games now.
It's an odd series mate because it appears that both Sony and Insomniac are all that interested in continuing the franchise.
I literally just finished F.O.M. again. Thanks for your work on this still favorite game.
Resistance needs to make a comeback doesn't it! Resistance is such a great series and it's a shame it's been so long since we have seen the IP
One of my favorites! a little empty feeling at times but kinda works for it!
I think this game was a little slept on even in it's hey day!
Definitely feels like a series that was slept on, needs to make its return!
Congratulations. Love your channel and I am so happy to see resistance on your channel as I love the game and its franchise. Good luck for your channel. If possible please do a retrospective on binary domain its such under rated game in my opinion
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the kind words! I'll add Binary Domain to the list mate I also remember that game being a good time
Easily in my top 5 games ever. Me and my buddy wasted so many hours playing co op into the early morning that we used to have dreams about it! The co op is what put it over the top!
I was 9 years old when the ps3 was released and resistance came with the console 😮💨😮💨
@@callofdoody21 ay a fellow '97 kid I see 😂
I LOVED the Sony PS3 shooters
Resistance
Killzone
Uncharted
I’d even qualify Infamous as one
Sony has some great IP's... just need to bring some of them back!
I loved this game and played the 3 parts of it. What a game
Great review! The game is a lot of fun, only thing I really dislike is the brown color palette. But at least the sequel changed that up a bit :)
Glad you enjoyed the video mate! I had a blast revisiting the trilogy but I agree, the original's colour palette is a bit bleak on the eyes
I like the dreary palette and England setting,it fits with the tones of the story and the never ending oppression of the Chimera,..
Sounds very familiar doesn't it 😂 Thank you mate glad you enjoyed it and I noticed that too!
I just picked up all 3 games for the first time so I'm looking to get into this franchise.
Hell yeah mate, enjoy!
I remember how bad it I wanted resistance when I first got a ps3 in 2011
See in middle school I did a history report on Nathan hale’s namesake and alternate history is just so cool to me
Despite the game already being old when I got it in 2012/13 I remember loving it to death the campaign was so fun and the guns characters world and reports were so enthralling and really made me love the world.
Wish the story continued felt like Resistance 3 wasn’t the ending forever favorite game 🥹🥹❤️😢
I remember playing Fall of Man and facing the first major enemy and being terified
The enemy design in Resistance was spooky back in the day
@@MayorHairBear what I wouldn't give to see at least a remaster. If they made a 4th game though I don't think it should follow Hale or Capelly.
This is definitely one of my all time favorites
most underrated game of the ps3... still great to this day and damn this was a pheniminal shooter online back in the day too
You review all these games that are really nostalgic for me cause they came at around 2010 ish and that’s when I started with game informer.
Oh the game informer days were something else!
I just discovered you and I was hoping you had covered resistance and here I am !
Do you know about the bullseye bomb and the ability to launch mini rockets out of the rocket launcher I didn't see you mention that about the weapons. Also the map glitching in this game online offline was so much fun you could get out of the map climb on top of things get into weird places.
I played it for the first time in 2015, i loved it. It was a fun game. Might have to dust off my ps3 to play it again
awesome game played it a ton when i was a like 15... i was never a console person but played this alot when not on pc
I don't think the added news from the Church of England suing Sony led to the game selling well/better. I live in the UK was very into gaming around that time and had never heard of this "controversy"
They made this game in 2 years?! Now it takes studios 5 years to make a shitty game. I want to go back to these medium fidelity graphics age of video games where development was faster/cheaper and they actually focused on gameplay more than how pretty a game was (even tho this game looked really good too)
100% needs a remake
Absolutely!
First two are incredible games, definitely not meh at all,..Time you realized their greatness...
I really liked this game, but it was pretty hard at times, due to enemies being such bullet sponges that swarm you
the church got mad that a video game had the church as a setting? Where you are exclusively aiming at alien monsters, and not anything sacred?
Glad/ disappointed the US isnt the only place where Christianity has some sensitive noise makers
I know it's insane isn't it, not like films and series haven't also used the church as a setting! 😂
Its a shame we dont have one in ps4
Such a good game
Charrrge him!
Fraaaaag
The reason I bought the PS3
As someone who has never personally played Half Life (I know, a travesty) I know Half Life inspiration when I see it and Resistance drips in it
I loved resistance 1, 2, 3 & retribution but I didn't care for burning skys.
I'd say the one thing I didn't like about resistance 3 was the ending cutscene.
If they were using real world physics they would not have been able to scoop Capelli up inside a falling terraformer.
That would have been more like wait for Capell to fall out the terraformer then catch him.
Yeah Burning Skies is a bit of a dud isn't it 😂
Ive paid an ungodly amount of money to keep myself in a PS 3 to this day, so I can keep playing 9 games: the Resistance, Killzone, and Infamous series. I just play them in a line over and over, though its getting hard to find good controllers. Lol
fall of man was the first FPS i played and finished
Recently bought a ps3 and got resistance fall of man and 2, and soon 3, so far am having a blast
I'm in the same boat and yeah I had completely forgotten how much health the Chimera had here. Glad it was toned down in later entries!
@@MayorHairBear yeah and in resistance 3 they made the bullseye so much better, it was hard to hit your targets in 1, also love how 3 brought the upgrade system from ratchet and clank.
