I recognize that this video was posted almost 2 years ago but I thought I would add some thoughts since I just bought the 9000. I have a JVC X790R 4k pixel shifting projector. I had the Panasonic dp-ub820 and I moved that to pair with my Sony Z9D. I was not expecting much of a change because both players have the same video processing chip set but wow I was wrong. The audio quality differences during movie playback are astounding! Now I did expect some improvement in sound quality but the player far exceeded my expectations in that regard. But the video quality truly blew me away - the extra ability to adjust the HDR roll off by selecting the basic luminance projector made a huge difference - far more than I expected! And on the other side the 820 does a fabulous job in the room with the Z9D. I hope these observations help someone.

Excellent video SC, and what an amazing player! I just received it and hooked it up yesterday, and what a picture! I am using this amazing player paired with the equally incomparable LG C9 77 inch OLED TV which is a perfect marriage. I formally had the Pioneer Elite Kuro TV and have been using the equally great Panasonic VT-60 as my everyday TV for a few years now so as you can see, picture quality is my No. 1 priority. So far I've only had the chance to see one 4K Blu-ray (The "Shape of Water") and the immersiveness and color accuracy between player and television was (to me) the best I've ever seen. I may never leave my basement again!!!

Shane, excellent work! I watched your entire video and paused several times to confirm the setup selections on my new UB9000. My Panasonic player is connected to my LG C1 OLED via top-of-the-line Ultra HDMI cables, all routed through a newly acquired high-end Onkyo Receiver. The UHD-HDR discs are delivering the stunning visuals I anticipated. However, when it comes to standard Blu-rays, I've stumbled upon a peculiar combination of settings that's producing exceptional results, leaving me both impressed and puzzled. It's a tiny bit on the blue side, but amazing. My research says that I shouldn't be combining picture modes in this way, but wow. Do you have any thoughts on this? It's crazy that this review is 5 years old and we still don't have a better successor. To be honest the price point is just not there, and the UB820 should have gotten a drop in price too. For the price, not having a backlit remote is also silly. Anyone using this is probably in a home theater room and not being able to see the pause sucks. Also is the USB port in the front 3.0? On the 820 it is not, and having to use the back port for larger files is a bad design choice. Nowadays everything should be USB C anyway. Time to put out a new product Panasonic. Also, how can you not include a premium HDMI cord?
Indeed but I'm pretty sure we will never get a successor sadly. The BR-business is dying it's very hard these days to make any money with blu rays let alone dedicated players. It would be amazing to get another player from Panasonic though - kinda one for the road before you can't buy any dedicated player anymore, which will probably be pretty soon. I have an UB820 and it's ok but it's a pretty loud player. I have it in a living room setup freely (not in a cabinet) and I can hear it from about 3m/10 feet away sometimes during quiet passages. That's why I always toyed with the idea to get the 9000 but I simply cannot justify paying so much to get basically the same player with the same digital PQ and AQ in a prettier chassis. I just don't trust these new bands (Reavon and Magnetar). I'm not willing to invest in such an expensive device from a company with no history and therefore/track record of long term stability and support whatsoever. Reavon is basically the same company as Zappiti (the company that made media players, which recently went bankrupt, leaving you with an expensive paperweight for a player - I had one too) so that doesn't exactly inspire confidence and Magnetar is also a very new company. The Panasonic players (especially the 9000) seem to have a history of drive failure after a few years of usage so it's even harder to justify spending a thousand bucks for it but they recently received a significant update to solve and improve the Dolby Vision playback - i's nice to see that the players still get supported to this day. I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy an UB9000 when they finally stop production and hope that it will last me a long time.

I am a big fan of Panasonic products but the engineers of this product have made some major omissions Was going to get this but glad I didn't and went for The Cambridge CXUHD and love this machine even though it doesn't have analog outputs because I wanted a complete digital transport.
REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do. But those Oppo dopes omitted allowing you to move and center the zoomed image on the screen. My JVC XV-NA70BK DVD player from 2004 can do that with ease. Zoom controls allow more intimate control over content and really adds to the fun. The least Panasonic should do for a player at this price is to add this feature via a firmware, but they probably wouldn't do so even if they could.
Thank you for this video! I have a Samsung 7100 UHD TV. How do I know if my TV supports HDR10+? I don't even know what that is. Not sure if I should turn this on or off. Also not sure what HDR TV type I should select. Thank you for your help.
When you say this has more premier audio options then UB820 does that include better audio quality when watching a 4K movie or if you are just playing music through it? I have a NX7 projector I use this with.
I got this player from my Mrs for Xmas and it is still in its sealed box under the tree while I'm waiting for a 5 meter HDMI cable. I have a LGB7v so I'm not worried about the Netflix issue or the streaming store the tv has it all and works beautifully. It's for movies and audio CD for my hi end hifi... love the vid keep up the work... Happy New year from the UK.
The problem with UB9000 is in order to use the stereo audio for CD listening, you have to disable audio thru HDMI and when watching movies you need to go back in advance setting and enable audio thru HDMI
I just bought another one for my bedroom Klipsch 7.2 system! My buddy is here right now hooking up his Oppo-205 that had been removed for better sound and playback. We we finally see which unit is better! I’ll report back after out test! Thx!
Can anyone tell me if the 7.1 analog outs can be used for its DAC features? My AVR doesn’t have a DAC this good so I’d like to output the ub9000 to a 7 channel amp, can do or no can do??
You can pick up the hdr optimiser whilst physically watching 4k/hdr content with this player. It’s not smooth in that sense. Going from dark to bright scenes and view Versa you can see the screen dimming or getting brighter rather abruptly. And the disc tray isn’t really all that silent at all. It’s quite some louder than my older Marantz UD7007. Which also had a rubberised disc plate which prevented the disc slipping upon loading inwards. The UD7007 would detect a misplaced disc and like an automatic door, would not close but reopen. Now I’ve not tried it, but I get the feeling this player would chew you’re disc in half.
Do u think, its worth the extra money compared to 820 for some one only using it for movies? and on Led would you use the hdr optimizer or leave it off?
I leave the optimizer on. If you won’t be using it for music you should be fine with the 820. If you have a high end setup then you maybe tempted to go toward the 9000. You can’t go wrong with either payer.
Hello there! I know this is an older video but thought I’d try asking a question anyways. Do you recommend any specific hdmi cord or should any 2.1 hdmi do? Also should the hookup for this with a LGC1 and JBL 5.1 sound bar be pretty straight forward or is there anything I need to know. Thanks!

Q. Just purchased 85" 900h with x4500h that can be upgrade to 2.1 eARC. If am streaming do you think better hard wire wifi for lest buffering watching Amazon prime?
I definitely like the idea of having both HDR versions but unless you have a tv that plays both Dolby vision and HDR10+ you can only use one or the other which ever your TV supports. Not sure if there are any movies in HDR10+. I’m debating on waiting or getting it. My tv only plays Dolby vision and there might be better options. But I want to be future proof at the same time. Man by the time I get all updated to 4K stuff 8k will probably be going on to 10k or what not lol.
My Blu-ray player only supports one external HDD up to 4TB. Will a splitter cable (with multiple USB 3.0 ports) be enough to make the player's menu recognize two 4TB HDDs, even though the player will obviously only be able to read one of them?
We are out of Play Blu-Ray Devices here in physical stores in Brazil. Those from the oppo brand, we don't have them here. Almost all brands with the exception of SONY and LG, however all brands that produced Play Blu-Ray devices disappear from our physical stores here in Brazil.
Hi - thanks so much for taking the time to put this video together. I’m hoping that you could possibly assist? I have a panasonic UB9000 on a JVC X7900 PROJECTOR. Blu-ray Disc/TH-cam/ other local video apps- perfect picture. Everything EXCEPT Netflix! The colour when running the Netflix App is washed out☹️. I can adjust the projector colour/ brightness/ and contrast to improve the experience, but that ruins TH-cam. I’ve connected an Apple TV and ran Netflix with excellent results. So the issue is Netflix on the panasonic player. I doubt it’s a faulty unit. My only solution is to permanently connect an Apple TV when using Netflix. Do you have any ideas.

@@jeffreycarrington9098 Yes, its basically the same player without the top-notch build quality, in Australia the UB9000 costs $1,600 AUD but the UB820 is $550 AUD and the UB320 costs $198 AUD, for me, I like to purchase premium gear but I don't earn a great deal so I save for bloody ages and buy the system in parts, ie, the tv cabinet, then save more and buy the tv, save more and buy the blu-ray player then the receiver and speakers all as separate saving blocks as I can afford them. DO NOT USE CREDIT, always best to save and buy as a cash purchase, if you buy these items on credit then you end up paying much more in interest and it's not always manageable and can really get you into financial poo.
Does it have HDMI inputs so can Roku or any streaming device play 4k hdr contents and benefits from downloaded hdr movies through usb port in an streaming device?
Now I'm totally confused! About 6 months ago I purchased the Panasonic UB820. It seems the 9000 does exactly the same thing! I still have the box should I swap it, pay the extra or keep it? Thanks...
If you plan on using it for music and have a decent system I'd go for it. If it's straight 4k Blu-ray watching you'd be fine with the 820. The 9000 does look way nicer in a rack though.
@@jeffreycarrington9098 the difference is in the sound and build quality, therefore the TV you have doesn't make any difference. You need to look at your sound system to see if it's quality will benefit from higher end sound chips. Or decide if the more solid build quality justifies the higher price.
I did get some paperwork with mine. But not the main manual, just a basic starter one, plus a couple other pieces. I think most of the electronic manufacturers are not providing main user manuals these days. But I would much prefer they did. I had to get the manual for my Denon X6400H printed and it cost me $67.00 at Staples. It was a large size though.
have just update my ub9000 and it now will not play sacds lyer and or multi channel sacds ( audio cd ) played same sacd right before update , will now only play cd layer . any help out there in regard set up or a fix still plays dvd multi channel . thanks
I owned one of those brand new. It breaks almost immediately and there is NO SUPPORT for repair from Panasonic. Local repair shops can’t fix it either because they can’t get the rare parts. It was junk three years ago, it’s junk now.
Good informative video, albeit skimming over the functions a bit too quickly, not giving enough time for the average user to fully take in what you're saying. Also nothing was mentioned about the HI RES streaming capabilities of this unit and how to use it I believe it has that feature as the logo is clearly printed on the box. Or maybe not? Would be nice to see and understand how to set up..
This is basically an OPPO 205 with a few differences, only one rear USB instead of two, but the drive tray looks like mine down to the logo on the front, good to know this is out there.
I just installed my UB9000Pk1 this evening, The Prime app will not output 4K HDR to my Sony A80J. 4K HDR programming is sent as SDR. I have similar issues with the Prime App on my Apple TV. Some combination of resetting the Apple TV or reinstalling the Prime App multiple times will restore HDR at least for a few days. What a pain!
Just setup my new Panasonic UB9000 on my LG OLED55C1. What an visual improvement from playing 4K Blu-rays on my PS5! Definitely worth the price! Being able to use separate HDMI audio cable to my older Stereo receiver, provided a noticeable difference in sound quality too!
How does the audio out optical/coax audio difference compare with dp-ub820? I will be using the audio out to connect to external dac and am wondering if the extra mony for audio worth it esp since the hcx processor is the same.
Hands down the ubp 9000 is better than Sony's 1100es 4k player. Both in build quality, hdr optimizer presets, Dolby Vision auto playback and PQ DV playback, as well as on board amp to use with XLR inputs for powered speakers and PA speakers. It's relatively expensive and can be found for less than the $1000 retail price but when you have one you are pretty much set for 4K viewing all around.

I get atmos and dts X etc. Now I’m all about fine tuning my audio, not so much video, if a 4K movie can look great on it it, or blow me away on it. Black panther and JW fallen kingdom are 2 that blew me away, how would I benefit from having a dedicated player? My option are between this and pioneers, LX500. Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
I just got the Pana 820 ... sadly i can't get Dolby Vision to work with my Sony 75X900F ... either from disc or from Netflix or Amazon... the player says its outputting DV but the TV is just defaulting to HDR.... I can get DV on the TV using its native apps or a Sony player.... firmware is up to date on everything... any suggestions anyone ? Thanks for the help !
Finally figured out that my sound bar was the culprit. Wouldn’t pass the DV signal from the 820 to the TV. However it would allow the DV signal from a Sony player to pass... smh.
@sparechange is there a difference in picture quality from this and an Xbox One X ? I have the Xbox as my player but I've seen this product recently, wanted to know if its worth the buy.
Isn’t the same functionality available in the UB820? Is it worth adding either of these players to a JVC DLA-NX7 which already has dynamic tone mapping firmware?
I like the sound of this but some part scare me the pause thing the poor app running any chance of a 2021 update review with all the update fixes Please ?
I think people should bear in mind HDR is still in infancy form and has many issues for basically every player and tv at this stage, for me the Dolby Vision is a more stable format as often I have seen the HDR often blows out the colours and brightness instead of enhancing the image quality.
I have the 820 when watching netflix the player takes forever to to log into netflix. Not sure why but it cant take a few minutes after clicking on netflix button on remote. Any ideas why?

Just ordered mine looking forward to enjoy thanks for sharing this video
Panasonic can make some high end equipment. I still using my power amp from 1988.
Question: can I hook this up to my a/v receiver that does not support DV, but does support Atmos, and still get DV on my Sony OLED?
Great video. I appreciate the detailed run-through on the settings. Very helpful.
does the ub9000 encode all sounds like dolby digital plus and dts like the oppo or i need a receiver ?
I am a big fan of Panasonic products but the engineers of this product have made some major omissions Was going to get this but glad I didn't and went for The Cambridge CXUHD and love this machine even though it doesn't have analog outputs because I wanted a complete digital transport.
What was the major omissions?
I had the same issues with the little brother player 820. I sent mine back for a replacement from crutchfield.
Freezing during playback dvds and blurays?Did you get a new one?Is it ok?
Hello from ireland , just bought this panasonic player today 16/09/2024 , has it a full screen option/ button on it
REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do.
Thanks! You'll love the player. Awesome picture quality.
let me buy it
The problem with UB9000 is in order to use the stereo audio for CD listening, you have to disable audio thru HDMI and when watching movies you need to go back in advance setting and enable audio thru HDMI
Thanks for the great videos! What is the difference between the 9000 and the 820 for audio strictly through the hdmi?
this would be nice to know! I'm in the same boat - ordered the 820, it gets here Tuesday
Shane is that the panasonic ub9000 mk2 or the iriginal one very good vid as always
Thanks!
Any quality HDMI 2.0 cable will do. No need for HDMI 2.1 as it's not even needed.
Greetings,
How do you compare the Panasonic DP-UB9000 to the Pioneer LX-500?
Very nice! How is Panasonic UB9000? Is it good as Oppo 205 player?
ordered the 820 instead of the 9000....still wondering if thats a good idea....got the 820 for 270 US....i think i can get the 9000 for about 750 US......so what to do what to do.....have a HUGE DVD collection about 4000 dvd's......95 % being blue rays...LOVE my movies and series etc....could almost buy three 820's for the price of the 9000....help me decide....lol...thx...cheers
Q. Just purchased 85" 900h with x4500h that can be upgrade to 2.1 eARC. If am streaming do you think better hard wire wifi for lest buffering watching Amazon prime?
Wired always.
Shane - How do you change the wallpaper on the home screen and what is the best file format?
Thanks for your review
Did somebody forget to install the actual power supply…😳
Running the OPPO UDP-205 so no plans to change BluRay/SACD player. Sound quality is through the roof.
Hi,I'm in Ghana and I have UB9000 but unfortunately, my remote control is missing, how and where can I get one, please?
I have had it for two days.Playback is fine.My main concern is that it receives the latest firmware update.I hope the Ethernet cable is good enough.I have frantically been trying to change the language that the unit is in.Please help.I am desperate.
On the back, do I hook up my HDMI into.the audio only or audio/video?
I wish I can afford a kick-ass player like this. 😞
Maybe you can.
The Panasonic UB820 has EXACTLY the same HDR menu and it's half the price.
Google it and read some reviews.
@@MaZEEZaM Yeah I always use cash as I hate credit.
I have one of them and the oppo i think this is way better in most areas
2:26 does this mean if I want to play my regular dvd movies they won’t have sound ?
Thanks for review !
Does it have HDMI inputs so can Roku or any streaming device play 4k hdr contents and benefits from downloaded hdr movies through usb port in an streaming device?
Hi Shane! I love your channel and your reviews how do you like the player is there anything you think that Panasonic could have add to the player?
Shane do you know if you can jailbreak this for region free playing?
Is there a uhd player or there that can do subtitle shift like the oppo could?
Now I'm totally confused!
About 6 months ago I purchased the Panasonic UB820.
It seems the 9000 does exactly the same thing!
I still have the box should I swap it, pay the extra or keep it?
Thanks...
If you plan on using it for music and have a decent system I'd go for it. If it's straight 4k Blu-ray watching you'd be fine with the 820. The 9000 does look way nicer in a rack though.
Yes thanks for the feedback Shane.
Well I've got the LG C7 OLED.
So keep or swap now you know what TV I've got?
Thank you for the video 🙂🙂🙂
I just installed my UB9000Pk1 this evening, The Prime app will not output 4K HDR to my Sony A80J. 4K HDR programming is sent as SDR. I have similar issues with the Prime App on my Apple TV. Some combination of resetting the Apple TV or reinstalling the Prime App multiple times will restore HDR at least for a few days. What a pain!
My Oppo has HDMI Input. Can't believe that they didn't include this useful feature.
And a DAC input!
Is there any difference between this player and the 820 over HDMI?
Just setup my new Panasonic UB9000 on my LG OLED55C1. What an visual improvement from playing 4K Blu-rays on my PS5! Definitely worth the price!
Being able to use separate HDMI audio cable to my older Stereo receiver, provided a noticeable difference in sound quality too!
stereo receiver with hdmi input??
How does the audio out optical/coax audio difference compare with dp-ub820? I will be using the audio out to connect to external dac and am wondering if the extra mony for audio worth it esp since the hcx processor is the same.
Great review Shane! Personally I'll be sticking with my Oppo 203
I don't think anyone gives a shit honestly
Yeah you're right. I guess only people reading comments that are 2 years old would huh? 👍🏼

Great channel! What are your thoughts if any on which is the better player between the Panasonic 9000 and the Sony 1100es?
Hands down the ubp 9000 is better than Sony's 1100es 4k player. Both in build quality, hdr optimizer presets, Dolby Vision auto playback and PQ DV playback, as well as on board amp to use with XLR inputs for powered speakers and PA speakers. It's relatively expensive and can be found for less than the $1000 retail price but when you have one you are pretty much set for 4K viewing all around.
How does this compare to the Pioneer Elite LX-500 besides the built in apps?
Great review. I think I will stick with the UB820.
Yeah I just can't see ANY difference in picture quality with my UB820.
On the image front they are essentially identical, as their image processing components are the same.
Is there a huge difference between an XBOX One S/X?
Great Video as always.Have been using the XBox one X for the last 6 months and have lost patience with their lack of Dolby Vision disc support.Have the UB820 on the way now based on your review which should arrive any day now.Cant wait to get my hands on it.
Does this player support the ability to adjust the subtitle position, size, font, and brightness?
It does. Atleast position and brightness.
Is there a difference in 4K Viewing??? I want Sony’s X800M2 4K Player and trying to keep everything Sony to match my A9G📺 and HT- Z9F sound bar!!! But then again I heard it’s better to let the TV do the upscaling instead of the Blu-ray player🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
The Panasonic is in a different league than the Sony. Call up Robert he’s got both on hand.
What HDR display type should I do for the Samsung RU8000?
Can you compare this to the new Reavon x-200 ?
Is there any way to make the Panasonic DP-UB9000 support external hard disk drives larger than 4TB capacity (e.g. 6TB)?

¿Hay algún modo de que el Panasonic DP-UB9000 admita discos duros externos de más de 4TB de capacidad (p.e. 6TB)?
So I’ve been looking for a dedicated 4K uhd player recently. Now, I have an Xbox one x currently, and it sends my audio bitstream to my AVR. Great! Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
P.s face planted myself when I realised I hadn’t subbed. So sorry. Fixed that😂👍🏻.
Curious how this compares to the pioneer udp lsx500 (i think that was what it's called)
Does this player play multiple regions? My gf is from new Zealand and when she comes over with some of her discs i wanna make sure we can watch them
I just got the Pana 820 ... sadly i can't get Dolby Vision to work with my Sony 75X900F ... either from disc or from Netflix or Amazon... the player says its outputting DV but the TV is just defaulting to HDR.... I can get DV on the TV using its native apps or a Sony player.... firmware is up to date on everything... any suggestions anyone ? Thanks for the help !
Did you ever find a solution/answer?
Finally figured out that my sound bar was the culprit. Wouldn’t pass the DV signal from the 820 to the TV. However it would allow the DV signal from a Sony player to pass... smh.
@sparechange is there a difference in picture quality from this and an Xbox One X ? I have the Xbox as my player but I've seen this product recently, wanted to know if its worth the buy.
Yes there's a difference. Worth it if you have a good display.
hello shane. will this unit play mkv files from the USb with dts hd ma and dolby digital..?
Hello, will Panasonic ( I have an Oppo 203) or a different brand release a new High End 4k ultra hd blu ray player soon?
If it had SACD playback it would be perfection.
When would you use that? That whole format was a complete flop.
@@therobot7254 exactly, just like DVD-Audio.
I use blu-ray pure audio discs.
Hi, Can someone tell me if I could use the RCA outputs for CD music playback and then use HDMI output for movies. or do I have to disconnect the HDMI cord before playing a CD if both cables are attached at the same time. the player is connected to an ONkyo AV receiver. (RZ820)
