    Sold my Oppo 203 after buying the Panasonic ub820. Much better HDR tone mapping and optimizer for a projector setup. Better upconversion of blurays to 4K and better bigger more dynamic soundstage. PANASONIC all day over Oppo and I was an Oppo fanboy from 83 to 203

      I think its funny how the oppo owners cant believe that another UHD player could ever come out and outperform it. Its unreasonable. Technology replaces itself almost every 1.5 years. The rule of microchips is every 1.5 years the same sized microchip can perform 2x the original. So it stands to reason something that was designed years ago with older components will be superseded by new tech. I think the oppo is a great player, but it may be replaced in terms of performance in another year.

      @@ThatHomeTheaterDude I am like you. I just want the best performance from my theater. Whichever brand is giving the best price to performance ratio is usually going to find a place in my theater. For a long time that was Oppo but not anymore. Oppo fanboys are BLIND AND DEAF . Panasonic is the new king of UHD players. Sold my 203 for $1k, $450 more than I paid new. So I am glad for the Oppo fanboys LOL.

    I don't understand the point of having all this insane and indecently expensive gear and then having a projector which produces a totally washed out picture, no contrast, crappy colors ? a 65" OLED tv is light years better.

      Obviously, you have not seen a properly set up 4K projector with a 130"+ screen in a dark room. do yourself a favor before posting ignorant comments and inform yourself by actually having the experience. you will place your 65" OLED in the bedroom when you do.

      Sheldon Spock i have a 1080p epson 6030 ub with dedicated 100 inch screen draggonfly with velvet 3.5inch board in a full black theater room, and i think it is better than 4k oled in term of image and color, color gradient and image smoothness.. important is there is no screen door effect, no reflection from a glass screen, no reflection on the side with the velvet. the size make it incredible picture very detailed. Also the front screen is very clean in a high end dedicated room with just the speaker and professional screen. Also the projector is full 3d thx certified ISF so the 3d is impressive especially on extra large screen. You add a top sound system dolby digital, dts as i have and it is better than the cinema cineplex. Yes there is more resolution in oled, but there is a better cinema like image on my projector that none of the oled tv can reproduce. They look not realistics, too plastics on oled tv, my projector is more cinema like, more realistics and more cinema. And the black are very good with a dynamic iris. Nothing beat it. I would never go to oled also because it is not the same as projection and there is burn in issues. You have to see one high end installation before to say otherwise.

      TV"s are for commentaries and special features as far as I'm concerned, as well as series and docs. The colors even on an LED TV are brighter and nice to look at, but nothing beats watching it on a screen three times that size and the way the creators envisioned people watching it. You still get a crisp picture and accurate colors on a projector too by the way.

    I know this video is 4 years old…. But I just bought this Panasonic. I am VP of Sales and Marketing in the HDMI/Cable industry (23 years). I know the guy who designed your fiber HDMI. I have had dinner with him and his boss several times. I have never in my life heard anyone make the claim that fiber HDMI has a better picture than copper. The HDMI chipset has data correction, and can actually restore millions of errors per second. We have tested this many times. So even if one was better than the other, the chipset is designed to correct both signals so you get a pure digital signal. HDMI uses data packets and checksums to repair bad packets just like a data network.

    • @eurodudenj
      @eurodudenj 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, agreed. I also own the UB9000 (bought a 2nd one as backup now that BD players are eventually going to be hard to find).
      HDMI is digital (and has error correction) as you noted. It only carries DATA, unlike analog cables which transmit / carry the actual signal. With analog cables, different quality cable design and components definitely can make a big difference, unlike HDMI so long as it is rated for the right speed / HDMI standard for your video resolution (e.g. HDMI 2.1 4K @120Hz or 8K@60Hz).
      The only legitimate reason that some HDMI cables should cost more than others is in cases where 1) they support (and are ideally certified for) faster speeds (for 4K or 8K e.g.) and 2) when they support longer cable runs (lengths), or both.
      In short, as far as I am aware, so long as your specific HDMI cable is rated for the appropriate speed (to reliably support your video resolution) and supports your run (lengths over n feet can be more challenging) without dropouts / artifacts / issues with displaying your content at the selected resolution, then the actual PQ with that cable should be the same as any other HDMI cable regardless of price.
      Just buy a decent 48Gbps / HDMI 2.1 or 2.1b (ideally certified) HDMI cable and that should be all you need for 8K video and spending more is frankly a waste (no improvement in PQ).
      That said, unlike the old days (before 4K and 8K etc.,) where the very cheapest HDMI cables often worked fine, for higher resolutions, such as 8K, you will now need a 48Gbps-capable cable; however there are great deals on 8K / 48Gbps cables which have been flawless on my OLED TV with my UB9000 and they were on sale for a ridiculously good price.

      Dude what the fuck? Why the fuck would you even THINK of replacing Oppo 203? Even though ub9000 is tiny bit better in motion clarity it's not meant to be replaced if you already have a beast blu ray.
      Ub9000 is meant for us people who just started building out our home theaters or for the people who are doing upgrades (like from 1080p bluray or maybe dvd). I wouldn't replace that Oppo 203 for at least 5 more years. It plays DV content wonderfully and at reference quality as well as HDR10. What more do you want? Great comparison. I bought an OPPO 203 in 2017. Last month, I bought a Samsung QN90C and a Q900C sound bar. I wanted to know if a 4K player was better than the OPPO. I watched the reviews on this Pansonic 9000 and the DP-UB820-K.
    Since they were both the same for 4K movies, I bought the UB820-K. I set this player up side by side and was surprised at how much better the DP-UB820-K looked and sounded. I went through my 4K and Bluray and DVD movies. I put the OPPO on eBay, which sold in less than 24 hours.

    There are some features that still keeps OPPO in the game. For example for HDR to SDR conversion, on OPPO you can actually choose the target luminance of the tone mapping. On Panasonic it will be done at 350 nits, for basic luminance projector, but that can still be too much for a lot of projectors. Furthermore the OPPO has an HDMI In which allows you to use it as a video processor for HDR for all your devices (you can tone mapp the streaming content), and also you get to use all it's other video processing options for those devices. Also OPPO has the option to choose as default resolution the ,,source output'' if you want to to the uspcalling on your display. Some dislays , for example Epson 4k projectos and other 4k shiters are doing better with upscalling done directly in the display rathar than sending an upscalled 4k signal to them.
    OPPO, with a third party software can also be used as a digital player for all your files. Panasonic can't really do that. You can play some of the digital files on Panasonic but you won't have lossless sound, you will have only lossy which is useless in a home cinema.
    The only thing that Panasonic does much better is HDR tonemapping for HDR displays and that is really a very important feature, but unfortunately it can be used only for UHD discs and nothing else. Also as I have already said, if you want HDR to SDR you will still get minimum 350 nit, which can also be too much.

    It’s no doubt the THX optimisations that can’t be altered that make it look better. Similar to putting a THX Blu-ray in a player over a regular Blu-ray, while the differences a subtle, I’m not sure many will change their oppos out. Personally, I would, just based on the fact that oppo are dead in the water. I wouldn’t purchase something that’s not going to last very long. This is an ideal alternative. I still need some videos of the pioneer UDP-LX800 from somewhere before I buy. It would be between the UB900 and the pioneer for me. But the price difference is HUGE. do you find and audio latency issues using two different hdmi cables for audio and video? My UD7007 can split audio and video. REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do. But those Oppo dopes omitted allowing you to move and center the zoomed image on the screen. My JVC XV-NA70BK DVD player from 2004 can do that with ease. Zoom controls allow more intimate control over content and really adds to the fun. The least Panasonic should do for a player at this price is to add this feature via a firmware, but they probably wouldn't do so even if they could.

The whole point of the video was to show just out of the box does it look great. I know other youtubers have done videos of the panasonic and i didnt want to talk about the same points. I saw nothing that indicated it bested the Oppo. I’m skeptical about the HDMI cable you thought gave better color. It would seem to me that the cable is adding some sort of color filtering which is changing the artistic intent of the movie. I have the Oppo 205 and it is a beast that all of the other manufactures are aspiring to be like. The most amazing thing is the Oppo players are discontinued and are still in the conversation and continue to lead imo. It also sounds like the Panasonic doesn’t have enough horsepower like the Oppo 203 which is the base model to the 205 and is slow in load times and switching scenes. To me that’s concerning.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take this video out of it. In person the difference is clear. But i cant bring everyone over and show the A/B test. Again its a compromise. Do you want flawless functionality and slightly lower picture quality. Or slightly better PQ and some quirky functionality issues. In most cases people that dont do demos very often wont notice the scene skipping function because almost always people watch a movie straight through. Both are Top tier players and they both have pros and cons. You really cant go wrong with either, but the sky high prices of the second hand units still bothers me. But as long as people want to pay the high prices for the oppo then they will continue to be high. Im thinking the oppo used prices will soon drop though. Again either would be a great addition to anyones home. PQ is noticeably better than the lower priced (sub $200) 4k players.

      That Home Theater Dude I here you but it seems your a/b test is flawed. I looked at your stills and they don’t seem to be exact frames. There are differences. When techno dad did his test, His frames appeared to be exact and there were no differences in PQ. Why? Because there should be no differences unless filtering is be introduced with the hdmi cable. I can pick out tons of differences with your frames which I believe is leading you to believe there are differences. I still can’t get over the difference in color you stated with the HDMI cable. I’m not debating that you saw differences, I’m simply saying that the differences may be due to a flawed ab test and an hdmi cable that may be filtering the signal. This would be concerning if you got your tv professionally calibrated and the hdmi cable throw off your calibrated specs.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude

      Earle Beckford the differences you may be seeing is the side by side positioning. To have them out side by side I had to shift the original video over to match as close as possible. Saying this there was no difference in original capturing of filming. Nothing was enhanced or altered. I get I’m no pro at this but I tried to make it as fair and as close as I could. If you don’t agree please make your own that is perfect to every point. I saw differences in between the two so I filmed it. Cameras don’t catch everything. I understand your point of view as well.

    You're review is spot on , Have both players , The Panasonic has a better contrast and sharper picture , The Oppo on the other hand will play anything you throw at it and is not far behind in Picture quality , Panasonic's always have problems with there disc draw being flimsy and cheap in construction and there is something they could have learned from Oppo but didn't , Just depends on what important to you in a player

    Just a personal opinion. I used to really like your opinions but lately I really noticed that every time someone sends you a product to review or is a sponsor video or a associate product you can tell that you are way to positive with the review and you give way to much trash to the other products. An Example of it is this video and your last one of the HDMI cables and the ones from the klipsch speakers that you used to love so much. I really hope that you stay truthful to your real opinions. I still watch your videos

      The channel is growing and i get to review different things. My opinions are still my own and not influenced by anyone. Im sorry you feel like Im straying from my roots, but i feel like im staying true just on a bigger stage. ZERO of my videos are sponsored. I talk about what I want to and I am not coached or given guidelines to talk about. My channel is my platform to express what I think are great products. Hope you stick with me. I have plenty more ideas planned for the channel.

    I’m confused about the 820 vs 1000 in regards to audio. If you are passing it via hdmi to your receiver you aren’t taking advantage of the 1000’s dac. My Anthem MRX720 doesnt have a subwoofer in for the 1000 out so i guess I should get the 820?

  • @Crane251
    @Crane251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    probably should change that resolution output to 4k/60p (4:4:4) to get higher chroma subsampling and the full color accuracy.

    • @BUZDRIFT
      @BUZDRIFT 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      4.4.4 is still a compressed color grading format, if only it were possible to run the full RGB spectrum!!! Ycbcr can send 4:4:4. Ycbcr is a a signal format different from RGB and meant to be more efficient. Ycbcr has Luma (brightness) information separate from chroma (color) which allows the subsampling of the latter (4:2:2 and 4:2:0) for more bandwidth but when you use 4:4:4 its virtually identical with RGB. Conversions between the two may cause some slight color inaccuracies but the measured differences are so small that they are almost in the margin of error domain. Definetly not invisible to the human eye

      Yes Sir. Thats usually the case, but the epson 5040 that was used in this video isnt capable of 4.4.4. in 4k/60 or even 24 . If you set the setting to 4k/60 the projector plays in SDR. The epson only does HDR in 4k/24fps in 4.2.0. Thats why i went with the lower setting.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude

      I wanted to remove any chance of interferance of a true a/b comparison. We plan on redoing the video routing it through the AVRs for pass through. Im guessing there will be a difference, but thats the skeptic in me.

    The Panasonic has a slightly better picture than the Oppo. My Oppo 205 plays DVD Audio and SACD up to 768 Khz and DSD 512. Audio quality is more important to to me in a universal BluRay player with MQA. Too bad Trump's embargo of metals shut down the Oppo players manufacture. Thanks for the Video.

    Great review! 4K player reviews are few and far between so I appreciate it.
    I’ll start with, I’m no audio/video expert. So I gave my left arm for a 8k Monoprice fiber hdmi for my Dennon AVR-X3700H and Sony A8H eARC pass through. When I opened the package I was like wtf because It was a directional cable? I tried it anyway, but it was not performing nearly as good as Zeskit Cinema Plus. I’m like, I guess it is only directional. So I connected it to my Apple TV4K to my Denon’s 2.1 8k input. I didn’t really see any difference in quality so I returned the cable. I just now realized Denon has been having problems with there 2.1 8k input so now I’m wondering if that it was the problem was? I don’t think so because I was only putting a 4K signal through it, but idk. Anyway just thought I’d mention that. Cool story bro. I liked the part in the middle the best.

    For 1000$, this Pana should be knocking on the door of the Oppo 205, not the Oppo 203 really. But even as old as it is, the Oppo 203 is toe to toe with this new Panasonic.
    I did not concentrate everywhere. But at 4:44, look at the tombstone; the Oppo shows the dirt on it much more clearly than the Pana.
    At 4:39, look at the gun, the hand holding the gun; everything, is sharper on the Oppo image and its details are faded on the Panasonic image.
    You claim at that the Panasonic is the winner for sharpness but the opposite is true in many stills.
    Look at 5:03 the right half of the image: you will see the Oppo is much sharper whereas the Panasonic is dull.
    Look again at 5:06 ; pause and compare the details of the leaves and trees on the Oppo shot versus the Panasonic and tell me which has sharper cuts and details.
    This Panasonic can’t even best a middle-tier Oppo from years ago, so this Panasonic is overpriced, plain and simple. And I grew up a Panasonic fanboy.

    I would want the Oppo and Panasonic side by side in a VE Shootout with a calibrator involved before making a determination. Looking carefully on a MacBook Pro with retina, i find the Oppo to be too bright in most scenes. Don't know if it's a setting or something else with the processing.
