While hunting one day towards the very end of the rut we came across a buck in a field. Standing up, head down to the ground, tongue hanging out. We literally walked up to it like these guys did. We thought it was a fake deer the game wardens put out as we were on a park boundary but we were on our private property side. The deer was totally exhausted from running does n breeding. We didn't think he was going to make it at all. I mean he was skin n bones but low n behold, a few weeks later there he was running does again as the next phase of the rut kicked in. These deer have a will to survive like no other. I've seen then out back in my yard with gashes in the back of their neck from either getting cut on a barb wire fence or gouged from fighting. I mean puss dripping down the side of their neck. He had to literally lean back on his hind legs to get down to the ground to eat. I put a small gravity feeder around a tree with high protein feed in it for him so he didnt have to bend down. Also we had like 4 snow storms back to back that year. I out out some regular hay with a full bail of 2nd cut western alfalfa. That buck would come in my yard, lay on the hay at dusk. Eat the western alfalfa and protein feed all night till sunrise. Then he would walk off into the wood line and bed down. He did that for 2 months. Then all of a sudden, there he was, standing up, bending his neck down to eat and walking around like nothing happened. We saved that deers life. Then I shot him the next year as a 155" 10 pointer. JUST KIDDING!! That deer is still around till this day. Hes about 6 1/2 now with a small 8pt rack maybe 120" but hes a fighter till the end. Also had yearling with busted hoofs hopping around out back eating. I feed these deer all winter. Give them about 30lbs of corn a day, 15lbs of high protein b16 feed and a 100lbs bail of western alfalfa on a pallet laying on the ground so it stays dry. I have about 30 to 40 deer out back every evening and not one of them ever thanked me for helping them through winter. Even tho they dont need my help, it still feels good to give back n help the 1 1/2 year olds make it through their 2nd winter especially if they were born very late last year and this years fawn make it through their 1st winter. I have personally seen on 2 different occasions from CWD. May sound silly but both were looking left and would spin slowly left circles. The other had waded in a cattle pond from the fever I assume and did the same thing, walked in only left turn tight circles. This one was looking left, maybe CWD??
Deer is not sick. It was in shock after what must have been a long fight. As you see in the end, he starts acting like a proper deer again in the end once recovered.
No, don't think so. Wasting is usually with the animal trodding in continual circles, not paying attention. This deer looked nearly hypnotized then it wore off. Stunned is a better word. Anyone here watch "North Woods Law"? Saw a moose with wasting. The ranger killed him right on camera.
I wouldn't draw any conclusions from what we've seen here. CWD is a decent hypothesis, but he has a nice half rack for an animal with such a serious, chronic disorder of the nervous system. He could also have been stunned by a collision with a vehicle. Many vertebrates change dramatically during the mating and ungulates become different beasts altogether during the rut. He could have been badly beaten, concussed, dominated, and left exhausted by a fight. He might be struggling with an opportunistic infection following injury and depletion after a fight. There are lots of possibilities. I would want to have that animal's brain screened for prion disease if I had harvested it for consumption.
Sabrecat Smiladon broke off? No he had shed his one side they could have grabbed his other antler and popped it off if they wanted to personally I would have done that cuz it would have shed in the next few days anyhow
That was incredibly dangerous guys. It was a good way to ‘get dead.’ A buck deer is a very strong animal and they are very unpredictable. Just a few miles from our home, a man was killed by a buck that he had raised from a fawn. I’m thankful that you young fellows were not attacked by that deer and I hope you never try something like that that again. By the way, I was raised by an avid outdoorsman in the Louisiana swamps, hunting and fishing from the time I was a baby. I’ve seen deer go into attack mode more than once for no other reason than I was in what they considered ‘their’ territory. I wasn’t trying to approach them, they came after me. Thanks to the Grace of God and my Daddy’s teaching, I avoided injury and death. Not putting you down, just offering some advice.
A lot of comments are saying either brain damage or disease or both. The way he's looking away from you is because he recognizes you as predators and is waiting for you to finish him off. Was probably not expecting you to pet him though.
This deer was the one they tried to help when his antlers got stuck in a big bush. They said he's been stuck for more than 3 days. When they tried to hold down the antlers, the left side breaks off. There's a video here that shows it.
I loved her she said I wouldn't ever see Bambi again her boyfriend jumped me broke the good side of my rack she even took my red nose 😶😂 great video guys there's still a little compassion out there. Big ups 👍
Looks to me like he was intently listening for something. Maybe a rival buck? Maybe he lost his other antler from fighting? He seemed to run off just fine. And besides, let nature take its course. If it was sick, it will end up feeding a mountain lion or some other predator.
@@wizardofahhhs759 Deer drop their antlers late December in the North through March and April in the South. Although this can very depending on if the rut comes in early, the weather, food availability, and other factors.
Head trauma, and fear of something else. The buck was focused on something out of view, that he was much more afraid of than the humans. Must be something dreadful to make him choose hunters over...whatever.
+Tommy 1 C. -Given that the USA Military training manual for the Northwest covers Sasquatch in the fauna section of “Native Flora and Fauna of the Pacific Northwest”, one does wonder how many Sasquatch exist, and where...could be what so riveted the buck’s attention. 🤔
My first thought was he’d been in a fight, but after thinking more on the matter I bet he came into contact with a truck and got the worst of it. Either way the boy was in shock and perhaps even had a traumatic brain injury. I glad you didn’t harvest him.
He wasn’t worried about you what so ever. More worried about the 8 foot hairy Bigfoot that just chased him 4-5 miles after ripping off his horn. Interesting.
Some masher buck has ripped this guys antler off in some titanic death struggle, broke his will, and now he lets men approach him, a picture of defeat. Hes probably delirous from sleep deprivation as well, plus maybe someHidden puncture wounds from antler tips Deer are so damn quirky, you can spend your life observing them and they will still suprise you with their behavior. I dont think this buck is sick i just think hes had a country ass kicking and no sleep for a week.
Totally agree! Some of these people commenting have no idea about deer or really any wildlife.... I've been hunting for 41 years now and I'm still learning new things about them.
Could it be, that the reason the deer has that "lost in the headlight look", is because it recently lost its antler to another larger deer in a rutting struggle? Suffering acute head trauma isn't out of the question, and it may take one maybe two days to "snap" out of it. The equivalent of a concussion left him very dazed. Just sayi'n ....
Scott and Leslie Chase - That seems a logical explanation since he has a antler missing and his off balance walking ect.., if he had both his antlers i would have went the a disease.
Tigerdad2015 dude it's not looking at the guys even after they start touching it, and in the video they say it looks weak. It's obviously not doing well

Deer have been acting very spooked in Texas lately. Coming to people and starting in direction they run from. Never have I seen so many so clear as the past couple months.
most likely lost a rut fight and was just still overwhelmed with the hormones racing through him and with all the adrenalin too, probably just was "Shocked" blind.
Was deff about to accuse this vid off being click bait but glad i watched the whole thing! I went to school for wild life management and this vid was taken during the rut, thats when the deer start fighting for rights to breed with the female deer aka doe. This was likely right after a major fight with a rival buck" look at the animals neck" its clearly been ruffed up and the loss of the animals "antlers" indicates either post rut shedding or loss of the fight also. The bucks exaused, being the reason he dint haul butt from the start of the vid but once he regained his composure he ran off..hoped this helps for anyone who might be confused
From the looks of his side, chest and left hip, he's been in a fight. The antler loss, if it happened during the fight, would have happened anyway, eventually, as they lose them every year between late December and early April, depending on the latitude in which they live. It would be unusual for a buck to be in a fight with another buck that late in the year, the rut being done long before. It was not wise to approach a wild animal with a set of 'daggers' like that. Hunters have been killed by 'dead' bucks.
Poor little guy. I live in a spot where I see deer almost every day. They live in family groups. The males leave at about age 2, the females stick together for life. I’ve been close enough to look into their eyes and see the same thing I see when I look into my dog’s eyes. It has changed my mind about hunting.
By then they have already started breeding other does. A buck will leave the family group or it’s mother when the doe becomes ready to breed again. There are several reasons they will leave, but one is because there is risk of a another male deer harming the young buck.
@@Rectitude4U I wasn’t trying to come off as rude. I have spend a lot of time watching deer just as u have. I thought I would drop in and spread some knowledge.
Wow, so many experts who can diagnose by watching a video. I find that amazing. It's a good thing that the people who found this deer didn't make the same diagnosis and kill it. Animals, every now and then, can do some unheard of strange things. I'm convinced this was one of those times. I say, just enjoy the moment.
my guess is... this is during the rut and possibly just broke off that antler fighting... (whitetail have been know to fight to the death during the rut) he is simply worn out and coming down from all that adrenaline built up during the fight. as the video progresses he snaps out of it slowly and then runs away! awesome video! thanks for sharing!
Give it some water and food. Please pass on this message when ever you see a video where people rescue or come across distressed animals. It may have been days since you came upon the animal. Love this. I’m a fisherman, and yes I keep fish time to time. I never got into hunting, don’t think I can kill another animal nearly looking into its peaceful eyes. Unless supermarkets shut down and I had no choice then I guess I would have to hunt. It was nice to see this video
within 14 days of having no food humans become cannibal's and will eat another human being .true fact ,,
@@lookingoverhell3448 wouldn’t mind that
I used to have deer in my mom's backyard that we had fed enough birdfeed to, it convinced them to let us pet them. It was after that that I gave up deer hunting. Just couldn't kill them.

Deer want human smell on him so other bucks would scare off and have all the does . Good plan.

Half doe half buck he’s a duck 😂
I have personally seen on 2 different occasions from CWD. May sound silly but both were looking left and would spin slowly left circles. The other had waded in a cattle pond from the fever I assume and did the same thing, walked in only left turn tight circles. This one was looking left, maybe CWD??
Thought so too. And the highstepping
Deer is not sick. It was in shock after what must have been a long fight. As you see in the end, he starts acting like a proper deer again in the end once recovered.
He probably just got done fighting and is reviving himself. He did look lethargic at the beginning them started snapping outta it.
tonkatoytruck it looked like wtf am i doing here ..oh shit! Humans!
Oliver North is probably a liberal
And you saw this fight? You know the lost antler was from a RECENT fight THAT day? Couldn't have been from weeks or months ago?
Sorry but CWD affects mature bucks more often than others. Because having a mature antler means little to discounting CWD.
Not cwd that boys wore out from chasing all the girls and fighting.
Antlers broken off one side...possible brain damage? Heck I thought it was a great decoy for the first 60 seconds of the vid.
Poor fella
Man I thought that was a robo deer
Sabrecat Smiladon I did to and it couldn't be brain trama or it would be laying down once a deer is hurt or has shock they bed down
Me TOO,I was thinking...his has to be a DECOY! No deer is going to let you walk up on it, let alone turn its back and look away!
Sabrecat Smiladon broke off? No he had shed his one side they could have grabbed his other antler and popped it off if they wanted to personally I would have done that cuz it would have shed in the next few days anyhow
Looks sick.
That deer is sick. He's not even paying them any attention as they walk up on him.
Looks to me like that deer was focused on something it was more afraid of in the woods.
Bill Vincent ... chronic wasting disease. Go home and washed your hands.
Deer looks tamed
Bill Vincent yup first thing I thought of when I saw it....sick !
Falcon 444 non monetized if it was in rut it would have attacked. That deer is sick, poor thing.
If it was sick, it will end up feeding a mountain lion or some other predator.
chizmo7
Ahhh, ok, true very true...
Hi
Deer shed their antlers every couple of years, Google it.
@@wizardofahhhs759 Deer drop their antlers late December in the North through March and April in the South. Although this can very depending on if the rut comes in early, the weather, food availability, and other factors.

I agree, I think he's sick or something. Not being able to smell you and seemed totally out of it. Great experience though.
Head trauma, and fear of something else. The buck was focused on something out of view, that he was much more afraid of than the humans. Must be something dreadful to make him choose hunters over...whatever.
I like this theory.

+Tommy 1 C. -Given that the USA Military training manual for the Northwest covers Sasquatch in the fauna section of “Native Flora and Fauna of the Pacific Northwest”, one does wonder how many Sasquatch exist, and where...could be what so riveted the buck’s attention. 🤔
It's suffering from a disease is all. It's sick. Those ones you put down immediately and dispose of the animal properly. So it doesn't infected more
My first thought was he’d been in a fight, but after thinking more on the matter I bet he came into contact with a truck and got the worst of it. Either way the boy was in shock and perhaps even had a traumatic brain injury. I glad you didn’t harvest him.

Some masher buck has ripped this guys antler off in some titanic death struggle, broke his will, and now he lets men approach him, a picture of defeat. Hes probably delirous from sleep deprivation as well, plus maybe someHidden puncture wounds from antler tips
Deer are so damn quirky, you can spend your life observing them and they will still suprise you with their behavior.
I dont think this buck is sick i just think hes had a country ass kicking and no sleep for a week.
Totally agree! Some of these people commenting have no idea about deer or really any wildlife.... I've been hunting for 41 years now and I'm still learning new things about them.
A beautiful animal, this shows even with hunters they know fair game and when an animal is in desperate need of help.
Yessir
The deer is having Vietnam flashbacks
Could it be, that the reason the deer has that "lost in the headlight look", is because it recently lost its antler to another larger deer in a rutting struggle? Suffering acute head trauma isn't out of the question, and it may take one maybe two days to "snap" out of it. The equivalent of a concussion left him very dazed. Just sayi'n ....
that deer got in somebody marijuana patch
Scott and Leslie Chase - That seems a logical explanation since he has a antler missing and his off balance walking ect.., if he had both his antlers i would have went the a disease.

Really? Is he? Idk.

go made disease...why the hell would he change his pettiness now
So unusual!! so enjoyable to view kindness from what may have been 'hunters', hoping the deer moved on to safety.
Chronic waist disease, sad but unfortunately common in over populated areas
If he were a decoy his eye would not be moving and it's remarkable that these 2 boy's got to touch him
Their camo clothes were so good that the deer didnt notice them for awhile
🔫ya, right! 😎
Smart deer. He was looking at them in the eyes. Letting them pet him and then ran off. Great way to get then not to shoot him. Brave brave deer.
that deer is sick and won't live for long
TheIrfanxz44 very true. A healthy deer would certainly not be that docile. It truly is sick.
That deer is tame, not sick!
Tigerdad2015 dude it's not looking at the guys even after they start touching it, and in the video they say it looks weak. It's obviously not doing well
That deer looks tame lol
If the deer was sick, what would or could it be sick from to make it act this way?? It originally didn't look at the guy who touched it first.
They do say this is a symptom of chronic waste. I didn't think it was like this though.
deer is like fuck it don't shoot me, let's be friends
It's sad to see an animal so sick as this. It still must have been an amazing experience to be able to do that.
Not sick. Had one antler - so he is shedding. But not sick-just busy with his thing.
i dont think he was sick
He had been fighting in the rut. Probably lost the one antler in the fight. He was exhausted.
deer looks scared shitless
If it started to rain would this deer now be a ...................rain deer?

I've seen deer act like that
At my hunting camp. Must be Sick with CWD. Or something else.
He recently lost a battle that’s why. Hopefully those hunters appreciate all walks of life. It’s 2019, we have no reason to continue to hunt animals for food- Whole Foods has you covered
He was luring you into Sasquatch’s trap.
Was about to say he is getting hit with that infrasound.
Deer have been acting very spooked in Texas lately. Coming to people and starting in direction they run from. Never have I seen so many so clear as the past couple months.
Get him some beer and a sandwich, geez.
Man that Deer 🦌 got into the Good Stuff!!!😉 Spacing out...
I hope you washed your hands after petting that deer. He's obviously sick.
Sheep Dog he's not sick. He just lost an antler and could be in shock
Was thinking I hope he washed his hands BEFORE he touched the deer.
most likely lost a rut fight and was just still overwhelmed with the hormones racing through him and with all the adrenalin too, probably just was "Shocked" blind.
Any time an animal acts out of the norm, like this deer did, should send red flags off and you should not approach them.

Wow - I wonder if he was asleep standing up? Great video :-)
A male deer will leave way before 2 years old
By then they have already started breeding other does. A buck will leave the family group or it’s mother when the doe becomes ready to breed again. There are several reasons they will leave, but one is because there is risk of a another male deer harming the young buck.

The amount of wildlife professionals on TH-cam blows my mind. I have only read one comment of all these that got this right.

my guess is... this is during the rut and possibly just broke off that antler fighting...

as the video progresses he snaps out of it slowly and then runs away!

Give it some water and food. Please pass on this message when ever you see a video where people rescue or come across distressed animals. It may have been days since you came upon the animal. Such as deer with locked horns, drowning animals, entangled animals, etc. If you find these weak animals please nourish them as they will be too weak to fend for themselves. Thank you.
