    Bit late to the party here. We got ourselves a Cyriocosmus Elegans. Apparently Juvenile at 1.5cm.
    Set it up with a small enclosure, gave it the web anchor points, good deep substrate, a hide etc. Made the mistake of disturbing it right at the start but have left it alone since.
    The little one is currently doing the "I'm not eating thing" In fact it hasn't eaten since it arrived quite some time ago.
    We don't want to disrupt it's burrow again and we aren't even sure where it is anymore as it hasn't webbed. So is it right to just offer food once in a while and remove it if uneaten?
    Will definitely be more content when it has it's first meal here.
    Also thank you for all the awesome content if you happen to peek at this comment. I do lots of parrot education content on my main account so I really appreciate people who provide upto date and good info!

    Hey man! I'm not a spider guy, much less a tarantula guy...
    I gotta say that you are way more awesome a spider guy as I'd have ever imagined!
    I was raised in Trinidad and came across my share of big bugs!
    My girlfriend and I were walking through a parking lot in Mayaro one night when I saw what I thought was a cool spider decal on the trunk of a car!
    I pointed at it to show her and accidentally touched it!
    It took off like a bat out of hell, she shrieked, I shrieked and then we pissed our pants laughing!
    The thing was enormous and I don't recall it looking like these dwarf ones. I was 15 or so and it was a long time ago and every scary thing is 20 times what it really was!!!
    Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much I admire your care and interest in these fascinating creature that scares the bejesus out of just about everyone except a few, like you!
    Thanks for a fantastic video!!!

She is such a heavy webber, usually on display and so entertaining to watch hunt down large crickets. I highly recommend them to any tarantula keeper. Do not let their size discourage you. They make up for it in beauty and personality! I'm actually looking for a male to pair with my girl.

    I find my c.elegans and c.perezmilesi (two slings of each kind) to be be quite opposite in behaviour and attitude. Both elegans tend to be hiding most of the time and flick hairs at the slightest disturbance (which really looks cute at such tiny guys). The perezmilesi are always out, eat everything even if they just pulled some prey item into their burrows just a minute ago and yes, they climb on my hand if I hold the enclosure. Perezmilesi are some 8 weeks older, but the behaviour was that way from the start, so that is not the reason- I'm keeping both the same way, which is why I'm wondering what makes my elegans that shy...

    This might be my first T. I've kept reptiles and amphibians for about 30 years, but never a T. Incei, honduran flame, and a few more from this genus I've been interested in, however out of all the Cyriocosmus, this seems to be the best for a first time beginner, with it being visible, and relatively calm. Your #1 pick on your other video was the C ritae though. I've heard they are pet holes, and super fast. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Can you please do a sling feeding video? I'd like to see what techniques you use for feeding the super small brand new slings that are, like in my case with my sling c. elegans, only 1/4 inch right now. Also any advice on slings that you never actually get to see out of its burrows, and how to know it's still alive. Not many people have information about the sling care to that depth, and most people just shout to leave it alone, but what signs can i look for?

    I have had my C. perezmilesi for almost a year and I'm pretty sure I need to rehouse it. I couldn't remember the recommended size for an enclosure so I decided to watch this again.
    I was starting to think it might be getting close to full grown, but the enclosure I have it in is only 3.5"×2"×2" and the legs aren't quite long enough to reach both sides. I didn't realize how much bigger it has got until I was looking at the large crickets I got for my A. seemanni and was briefly thinking my C. perezmilesi might be able to eat that. No, not quite but close...

    Where do you get your sling size water dishes? Richard I really appreciate your channel. I convinced my wife to drive an hour and a half to the Container Store to buy amacs Monday night. My wife seen the cart and asked how many tarantulas are you planning on getting Sunday. I said 4 tops. She asked why I had 12 boxes? I said anything can happen.

      Hahahaha...that's hillarious and I can certainly relate! If you look in the description under my videos (on the mobile app you have to hit the little down arrow for see more, I have a link to my Amazon store. Everything I use to keep Tarantulas, most of the tarantula shirts I wear, lights, and even water dishes are linked in the lists. I use the little clear dishes for my spiderlings, I actually get them from work, but found some for sale on amazon and posted the link there. They're actually little containers used to hold gemstones or diamonds. The usually come with a little foam insert, but I through that out, rinse them out real well and use them as a water dish and they work very well. Check it out here:

    Okay I have an important question for this species I noticed you said remove any uneaten food or leftovers and that made me think how can you remove uneaten food or leftovers if the tarantula brought it all the way down to their tunnel is it even possible to remove food in their tunnels?

    • @owie8212

      That's an issue I've run into myself! My spiderling likes to molt in her burrow, so I can't clean it out unless she decides to redecorate, and pull it up herself. I decided leaving it in there is safer then potentially collapsing her whole den, but maybe someone else has a better method.

  • @mayam.3240
    @mayam.3240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even through our C. elegans is still a sling, it's such a cute, nice, curious, but also smart and deadly killer. Since I noticed her/his responses to "crippled" food I tried it with unharmed micro crickets. They are just as huge as herself and very jumpy, soooo after a couples tries to grab them he/she scares them into the connected tunnels and jumps herself into another entrance to carry out the deadly strike. Just amazing to watch that tiny cutie!
    Also, I never seen it refuse any meal. Until now the only way to figure out if she was in premoult was if she didn't finish her meals 2x in a row.... She literally never refuses to go for the prey.

    After watching your top 10 dwarf species about 30 times, I have decided to buy a spiderling of this. Was a toss up between this, Brazil Blue Beauty Dwarf and Chilean Flame. I may get a BBBD in the future as you can keep more dwarfs than larger T's due to the space :)

    Hey Richard, I'm getting one of these C. Elegans as my first tarantula, and I had a small question for you. You mentioned avoiding heat mats, but I live in a fairly cold part of the world, and even the ambient indoor temperature often drops below 20C, Sometimes down to 15. Is a heat mat against one side of the enclosure a no-go? What would you suggest? I've kept true spiders for a good while and they all seem to like hanging out by a low/medium heat, but unsure if things need to be different for the tarantula.

    • @kelvinengland3991
      @kelvinengland3991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need for a heat source with those temps. They will be fine.
