This is exactly what a former friend of mine had done when she took the challenge of raising a 1/4" T. albopilosus. She had to cut up mealworms in pieces at first. When it grew to around 1.25", it began to take small live crickets. That was in 2010-11. Eventually, she grew bored of it and dropped it off at the LPS. I just happened to go there for crix for my own and recognized the animal. The LPS let me have her for free since they knew I was caring for a small collection. Now, this beautiful female is over 5" I think and the official "garbage disposal" of my group. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

Chopped mealworms are way easier then pinheads, and you can feed many slings per worm :)

I know its a little silly but thanks for advocating for the human treatment of the feeder insects. I actually view my feeder colonies as pets and like the little guys, so other than the unlucky ones that must pay the price (Den of the Shining Wire anyone?) they get spoiled.

I got into slings pretty quickly, but I understand why it makes people anxious. They are ridiculously tiny sometimes, but it's very rewarding to raise them up!

this literally came at the right exact time for me!😁😁 my mom is gonna get me a new tarantula for my late Christmas present and I was planning on getting a sling to help keep it on the cheaper side, but also because I find the aspect of raising a tarantula from an itty bitty baby to an adult so fascinating and rewarding.
Still trying to figure out what species I want (thinking about a GBB) but I've still been so nervous about having the care requirements down perfectly. This video has really helped reassure me a lot and now I can know more of what to expect. Thank you!!!

Personally, I’ve found large cricket legs to be a good food source for slings around the half inch mark. I also like to feed pre-killed prey to any sling that I think is in premolt, or has just molted, just to be on the safe side.

I was super nervous getting slings the first time. I already had a ton of red runners that were too small for my older T's. After unboxing them and putting them in there little enclosures I decided to feed them. I dropped a little red runner in the T.Vagans home first, the little guy took it down as soon as it hit the dirt. They all ended up eating like that right off the bat. I luckily didn't have the anxiety that comes with food. The slings I got eat in front of me more then my bigger T's thus far. Its actually not a good thing because now I want more lol Thanks Richard its videos like this that gave me the confidence to jump in.

Hey Richard I have an idea that might also help when you feed those fruit flies. Try putting a ladies nylon stocking over the jar or small enclosure. Then they shouldn't be able to get out of the holes. Giving your tarantula and scorpions more time to get them and leas chance of them running around your house good luck and great video.

I think a good thing to note is there are 2 types of (flightless) fruit flies and the D. hydei are the larger and you’d still need about 3 even for a baby T but for a jumper or some types of dwarfs you’d need Melanogaster for sure!

I just got my first spider today, I got a Avicularia avicularia or a Pink Toe. I've been trying to leave them alone bc they still had a molt in their enclosure but I got excited and decided to put a cricket in there for them but they didn't eat it so then I got scared thinking my spiderling was still soft so I killed the cricket and left it in there for them. I'm so excited, I can't wait to watch it grow

Always wanted to breed tarantulas but ive never been able to do it. Im finally in a place in my life where I can actually do it. I got a female huntsman from an expo about 6 months ago. Just ordered 2 more of the same species. Im hoping for a male or 2. Thanks for the info Richard. I always enjoy watching your videos. I started breeding dubias right around the same time I got my huntsman. I ended up buying a gravid scorpion a few years back. Nobody knew it was gravid. That was an awesome and surprising experience.

I do wax worms for my bigger slings, and the smaller ones i cut up mealworms. If the wax worms live long enough they become moths and i noticed some species really enjoy the moths, my catalina sling seems to purposely let the wax worms burrow and become moths before he/she eats, really interesting.

Great video! It's always nice when people go into specific detail and show how they do things.
My tip for flightless fruit flies is get a flip-top spice container. I'll put the whole fruit fly container in the fridge, use a funnel to tap them into the spice jar, and put on the lid. Then you can do a tap down, then quickly flip it open and closed to sprinkle some out.
When my jumping spiders were slings I had a lot of them to feed, and that worked well. You still get a few escapees, but it's not too bad. If you're really worried about it, get a wide low tupperware to do things in, and grease the edges. Then the escapees are trapped in that area.
I breed Superworms (for my reptile) so I just fish out the tiniest ones and I think they work as well as mealworms- if you have a number of creatures that eat them I really recommend breeding. If I'm feeding something larger I do a partial head crush because they can bite. They're so easy to raise.
I tend to have more variety on hand because some jumping spiders won't really touch worms and prefer flies, so I have bluebottle flies and black soldier flies. I've found my GBB T will eat those too (they seem to eat about anything).
If people have trouble finding small enough crickets, you can semi breed them. I find them too much of a PITA to full on breed, but if you get a couple adult females and give them a tiny tub of damp soil to lay in, then you'll have baby crickets in a couple weeks (if they're adult they've already mated, you don't need noisy males). If you run out or they die off, just repeat. Just give em a bit of veggies, dry bran/oat/meal food, and water.
My first T is a C. cyanopubescens that I raised from a somewhat small sling. They're still doing great, I love them! Their body (excluding legs) is about an inch and a half now, and they're starting to develop some of their adult colors. It's been so fun watching them grow!
My second T, an A. avicularia sling, didn't make it and I was really sad. They did well for like a month and even molted, but shortly after I found them curled at the bottom :( I may have needed more ventilation, I had some but maybe it wasn't enough. I had them in a cup with holes poked, and a nylon over the top (and sticks, moist soil, etc). I was always kinda worried about them eating since they webbed up near the top and mostly stayed there, but it seemed like they ate. I had them on hydei fruit flies and pinhead crickets. I just really liked the little guy, they had a lot of personality, and I even had a video of them doing a "happy dance".

My interest in spiders started with jumping spiders so I knew if I was successful raising them up, I was confident to get my very first spiderling T. a Homoeomma Chilensis. It is three years old now and a very unpredictable eater. This year was the first it wasn't scared to eat small crickets. You have to remember this is a dwarf species. I'll never forget the first attack and roll. Lol!

A tip for the fruit fly issue...put them in a smaller cup (I use the 5 ounce plastic cups with lids) and then put that cup inside a bigger cup with some ice in the bottom of it(I use a ceramic dip dish) . It will keep them cold and still as long as there is ice. I don't even need to use the lid on it. Makes it sooooo much easier to feed a bunch of slings. Doesn't matter how long I have left them on ice, I've never had any die from it. I put the whole culture in fridge for maybe 3 or 4 minutes before shaking them into the 5 ounce cup.

Flightless fruit flies don't annoy me nearly as much as crickets (of any size). I don't think there's any feeder as annoying as crickets, haha. I also put my fruit flies in the fridge to slow them down; I also find that it's helpful to do my fruit fly pouring while over a sink or bathtub, where if one gets out they can't get out too fast, and I can just wash it down the drain. I also like using "spice" lids on my fruit fly enclosures, which I picked up from Peter @ Bugs In Cyberspace. It's easier to pop the lid open, a smaller opening to keep track of with more directed pouring action, and easier to snap back closed than having to handle, seat, and seal a separate lid.

Howzit Richard, there isn't a lot of videos regarding the P. Victorii that go in detail and I am planning to get one. If you don't have a T lined up for the next vid would you consider doing one on my suggestion? Thanks Man. Much love from South Africa. Keep up the Great Vids!

I have never had 200k subs...maybe you saw 20k subs...that is about where I was last year. I am slowly working towards 100k though :)

I got my first T, a Caribena versicolor spiderling, yesterday! I gave it a smaller, decapitated mealworm today to see if it would eat, and it’s been standing on it for hours-I’m assuming it’s doing something! Lol

Glad you made this one, it was excellent reassurance that I'm doing everything right 🥰 everyone is thriving, and I have 3 new T's otw! (H. maculata, X. imannis, & B. hamorii) I can't wait, the imannis is definitely going to rival my H. devamatha for my favorite T. Hope your new year is going well thus far Richard!

“Been in premoult for nearly 6 months” - that’s relieving to hear, all our slings from 1 genus I thought were in premoult for a few months now. They’re still feeding and just not ready to moult yet I guess. Hopefully soon! Have tried several things like increased humidity etc but no avail. Wait and watch I guess :)

I'm really liking your channel. Its helping a lot with my new hobby. There is one thing i would love to see and that is about setting up a vivarium and heating for people who don't live in warm country's like the States. I live in the UK and our temp varies a lot but at the moment its around 20 deg C. So, any help you can offer on this subject would be awesome.
