Thanks for checking out this weeks episode! I hope you find it informative and entertaining! As irony would have it, right after I recorded this video this species was reclassified! It is now classified as Tliltocatl albopilosum. You can check out the paper here: academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/zoolinnean/zlz046/5611858?fbclid=IwAR1yz2--7tmszGrQJeqAa3UOC2103Ln8qF8qU5oMJQJu8LeCFvI10bcL9us

If you provide the right substrate/housing they create amazing burrows and then you don’t see them as much... but watching a tarantula carry little bits of dirt and walk back and forth working on it was incredibly cute and entertaining.

I love how much variation in personality and behavior these guys exhibit! Reading the comments is always a joy because everyone’s is so different. My girl is about 7 years old and spends pretty much all day outside of her hides (she burrowed a lot when she was younger, but over the years she’s started to spend more time on the surface). So docile-even when hunting! She very casually strolls up to her prey and grabs. Barely even pounces.
She’s the perfect display tarantula, and while my family was really freaked out at first, now when they visit they actually ask to see her. It’s so rewarding to see how she’s helped my family become more comfortable with and respectful towards spiders.
Also, her tank is next to my loom and other weaving equipment. It’s always fun to see her laying down silk while I’m spinning or weaving some silk of my own. The best muse a fiber artist could ask for!

I'm a huge arachnophobe. I never use to be bad but for some reason it gets worse every year. Took the plunge and got myself a couple of curly hairs. I got them for $5 each as slings so my experience can grow as they do. Right now they are not even an inch long. Even with my fear I can't help but be fascinated. Even though being phobic of slings is kind of pathetic I'm finding that the exposure is making want to explore the hobby more.
Definitely sub'd. Look forward to seeing your content and learning more.

I keep saying that i quit certain forum for Tarantula Keepers because their go-to advice was to keep my Brachypelma sling bone dry... This ended with the burrow the sling made collapsing as the sling was molting (I have no idea how but the sling somehow survived this).
Ever since I've been watering it's substrate a bit every 2 weeks or so to prevent it from happening again which was a no-no for people on that forum.
The spiderling is not complaining and is pushing it's 6th molt in my care.
So yeah - the advice to give them some moisture is good. Especially for slings which can dehydrate super fast.

Mine used to be sooo skittish, she literally ran around her enclosure even when I turned on the lights in the room, while the rest couldn't care less. Used to kick hairs, too, but never actually threat-postured. It was hard even to feed her, I had to leave food there for a few hours until she was relaxed enough to hunt. Scaredy-cat.
Now she got used to me occasionally testing her patience, I guess. She's even fine being handled. Doesn't kick hairs, moves wherever I gently push her, and never shows any sings of threat.
Became my calmest T so far. What a way to go.

I'm new to tarantulas, but have kept exotic pets for decades now. I lived in with my family and they strictly forbid me getting any spider bigger than 3cm hahah. I moved to my own place and got a curlyhair, since that was the species I studied the most since a lot of people have them and I got a lot of varying opinions and guides. I ended up just contacting a breeder and talking it out with him and decided to finally purchase one. I'm not the typical exotics owner bc I tend to try to go out of limits and do everything in my power to mimic natural habitats with the size, plants and climate for the enclosures. I tend to go a bit too overboard with it and I housed my 4 years old T in a fairly large (a terrarium sized approximately like a 115gallon aquarium) well seasoned bioactive terrarium with a shallow creek water feature and all of the CUC (isopods, springtails, earthworms, millipedes... etc) and some critters native to the parts the T comes from. I don't take a pet just to watch them sit in their enclosure, but instead I love to create a world, I love seeing everything in it from the simplest springtails, new plant growth to a beautiful statement animal. I find excitement and beauty in natural opportunity to see the different animals and their natural behaviors still enclosed inside my own house. to be the creator of such balance and naturalistic beauty is astonishing to me. that's why even though I'll watch every single yt vid, read as many blogs, research papers, question boards and social media posts, I'll still always seek my main input from nature itself, bc that's where these incredible beasts truly belong to. I really appreciate you for sharing important tips and support for people, but I personally yearn for content with similar morals and ethics I posess. if there would ever be a possibility to see you for example try to mimic the best of your abilities a natural habitat, I would for sure stick around and watch your content. good luck with everything you're doing!!

@@Mango_the_gecko hi I'm in my twenties, but I've been in the hobby since I was a tiny kid! I do have experience with a rescued pair of giant African millipedes and they are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful pets. I kept mine in a bioactive terrarium designed to mimic their natural habitat! they were great and long lived pets so I'd definitely recommend them. I'd also recommend researching their natural habitat and environmental parameters. then I'd pick the enclosure to fit how you could make that happen the best with what you got and then just watch the beautiful creatures frolicking around and showing the habits they would in the wild. for them I also recommend doing somewhat regular health checks if possible bc they can sometimes have quite serious health issues too. the 2 of mine came in horrible condition due to neglect so I'd really advise any new exotics keeper to remember, even if they are insects, they do require care and vigilance! GOOD LUCK in the hobby!!

This video made me so excited to get one of these T's but I live in Germany and keeping tarantulas is banned in the state (Bundesland) I live in 😭😭 I have to apply for an exemption from the ban and possibly pay a 100 Euro fee or something. Sad day. But this video hyped me so much. I might just go with the bureaucratic flow 😔and it definitely helped me feel confident enough to explain stuff to the officials if they want to interview me on the species.
Someone on a German online forum called my state an arachnophobic state and I guess that's accurate. Exchanging emails with the veterinary office rn. Wish me luck :')

Yup, B. albopilosum is great. Many call them docile or lazy, but there is always a chance to meet a one with unique behavior. For example, my never burrow, she always spends time in the open, never flick her hairs, and is used to my presence in her proximity because she knows that I am a source of the food. (at least I think she learned that) Great T for beginners. :) Thumb up and with best regards.

  • @jamesragsdale3069

Mine is sooo docile. Not shy at all. Moving it from one container to another is actually a bit comical, as it doesn't uh, care what's going. The paintbrush was touching its rear and it was simple like "Uh, okay.". Never had an ounce of aggression out of it, or nonfood related quick movement. Makes a great desk buddy, just keep em away from bright lights. Makes some decent burrows on a good soil mix for burrowing/tunneling, but doesn't stay in them all the time.
