Ethan touched on a good point in this when he said as a 25 year old man he doesn't want to walk around with something that looks intended for a child.
There should be way more fidget toys designed for adults with ADHD, autism ect... So we don't feel as awkward about having our fidgets.

@@deinodinosuchus 100%, soft toys are a really good and grounding/calming stim for me especially when I'm having a bad anxiety time and people get super judgemental when they see a 25yo with a plush toy. as an autistic adult with ADHD that went undiagnosed for 30 years, finding stim toys that will not only keep people from judging me, but also ones that hit my stim requirements while not bothering other people (i love clicks and clomps, the green hand thing you got would be PERFECT for me) its really hard to come by
but those tangles are things i always see as super helpful and not totally obvious cuz they just meld to your hand. but in the end, i hate the idea that we have to worry about using "childish" things and getting judgment (or ableism, being talked to and about like a child) just to get our stimming and focus needs met
cringe culture sucks...but ALSO a lot of these toys are very large and i dislike having to carry them all the time
my best friend got me this little stim toy thats like...two metal hoops that are linked, and they have little metal and rubber rolly things, and you can kinda spin or move the hoops in your hand and loop them...they kinda look like a venn diagram
ITS HARD TO EXPLAIN but they are simple, small and dont look like a "kid toy", and you can just kinda poke a finger through the middle where the two hoops meet and wear it like a ring (thats also stimmy)
its really neat! im also a big fan of silicon poppy thingies, but the ones i like are way too big OR noisy lol
theres an amogus pop toy in the shape of a space bean and i want it SO BAD, despite the fact that "only kids" can like among us
(among us is a weird hyperfixation of mine, in that i cant play it but i watch people play it and i just love the aesthetic in general)

It's upsetting and it's highly unfair to all of us who are neurodivergent

For the slug: from personal experience I can say that the best/worst way to handle that little dude is to grab it by one end, shake it really hard, and possibly throw it across the room. Bonus points if you grit your teeth so hard that you fear breaking your jaw and shake your fists in the air once it's been launched. It's a strangely energizing stim.

I wish that there were more adultish fidget tools, tools being the main word. I think that neurotypical people really do see it as we need a toy to keep ourselves entertained at all times which is why so many of them look like something you'd give a baby or small child. But that's not how we use them. It's like we have two layers of concentration, active and passive. If we are trying to actively pay attention to something it's really difficult because our passive attention is constantly looking for input which causes us to get distracted by sounds or random thoughts etc etc. Fidget tools give our passive attention something repetitive to focus on that doesn't take a lot of concentration so we're actually able to focus on the thing that we want to be focused on without having our attention pulled away by something else.

I think this kind of goes into the thing with a lot of disability tools. They want to make as much money as possible so they don't advertise directly to disabled people. They advertise to anyone. So infomercial items like electric can openers, comfort wipe, shoedini etc. etc.
Fidget tools are advertised to a wider audience too because they can also be toys for kids. This can make the products cheaper too.

A really good fidget toy that has really worked for me is a trainer butterfly knife. It has no sharp blade, so you can't cut yourself, but you can learn how to do simple, repetitive tricks on it with one hand that are satisfying to repeat when sitting, standing, and even walking. You can keep it in your pocket as well. It can be a bit noisy though. (At least it doesn't make you look like you're walking around with a "toddlers toy", lol.)
I compare it to a yoyo. There's the basic "open" and "close" trick that's satisfying to do, but you can also learn super complicated tricks that can be just as fun to perform. Personally, just the back and forth pattern of opening and closing is super satisfying to me. You can actually DO something specifically with it instead of just having a little toy with no real purpose.
It can take a bit to learn and you might bruise your knuckles at first, but not whenever you get the hang of it. It's a good idea to hold the knife over a bed or cushion while you're practicing so it doesn't break if you accidentally drop it.
It isn't technically a fidget toy, but it's works best for when I feel like I need to do something with my hands.

@@courtneygriffith4664 Oh, I didn't realize that! And yeah, I would definitely recommend it! If you can, though, try to tape a cotton ball to the second knuckle on your index finger when learning the tricks at first. I bruised it up pretty badly since the bite handle kept slamming down onto my finger.

    • @Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice
      @Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If it's just getting worse, consider comordbitity. MOST people who have one condition also have another... and another... Each condition makes the possibility of having more conditions more likely. I had what I thought was "super adhd" but it turns out I have adhd, bi polar, borderline, anxiety & depression, dissociative identity disorder, and possibly cptsd and ocd. Not only do a lot of these disorders have symptoms that are similar to adhd counterparts (like hyperfocus vs manic phases, and RSD vs BPD, and adhd memory problems vs amnesia in DID) but also, anything that makes you stressed makes all your conditions worse. Consider that you might want to look at "conditions commonly confused with adhd", not because you don't have adhd, but because you might have one that overlaps and is hiding behind your adhd. Either way, good luck!

As someone with Autism and ADHD, I too wish there were more options for fidgets for us. Ones that not only help our needs but also don’t attract the attention of other people so they don’t get distracted or annoyed, (and so we don’t get yelled at). And I also agree with Ethan, having a big fidget sucks. It’s nice to have a small one that is easy to carry around. I definitely think he should team up with a company who makes these things to make fidgets that not only up to his standards, but to other people with ADHD, Autism, etc. That would be so cool.

I use the smooth one in one hand by coiling it over and over. Hard to explain, but they come coiled up except for the part that connects the circle, which sticks out off the side. I put my index finger in that loop, push the coil apart, and then start redo-ing the coil around my index finger, so the whole thing shifts over a couple links. And just repeat that forever lol.

Really helps me to concentrate and is indeed great help for calming down my hyperactive ass. If anyone ever had a habit of clicking pen repeatedly, then this toy is just perfect for you in my opinion. Yes, all buttons have different amount of pression that you can click on them with, and it is just like perfect personally to me, because there are not only clicky ones, but also very soft and silent that do not annoy others as much. It is also just great because of its size and amount of things you can do with it, different textures and mechanisms you can feel and play around with. It can really help you with not losing focus through the day, atleast it does for me. My personal favorite!
