Top Gear (or Top Racer) for SNES is essentially LETC minus the Lotus license. The title song appears as the soundtrack of the 4th stage in every country.
I only added it because it was billed as 1. I know it's part 2 that's why I called it a spin off in the list sequence. Believe me ! I'm in a corner when I do these videos. If I don't add it, People ask "why not ?" And if I do add it I'm asked "why ?" ... So to cover my bases I just add them now. >_
Except this is a similar situation to how Dune 2 : Battle for Arrakis was labelled without a "2" when it was ported to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Lotus Turbo Challenger for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a port of Lotus Turbo Challenger 2, not the first game and should have not gotten mixed up as such.
This was an Amiga game and it shows, mind you this reminded me of my pet peeve with the game back in the day, one of the music channels was shared with the sfx.
Thanks for showing the full screen 4:3 Amiga Lotus 1 experience. I know most Amiga games are NTSC compatible but compared to the ST version, the PAL version of Lotus 1 always looked squashed to me. Back in the day I used Relokick to boot the game in NTSC mode. :) I know it must be difficult to decide to show a game 1:1, or 'fit to screen' but back in the day we all had these displays fit our CRTs. Some channels (PatmanQC etc) use your work as reference, and for me full screen is better than 1:1, as Gameboy footage is the size of a postage stamp.
Specifically the Bordeaux theme? That theme is pretty much the same. Some stuff was reused from the Lotus games in Top Gear as it was made by some of the same people. I'm not that knowledgeable but they might have made Top Gear a different game to get around the the restriction that SNES games just not be on other platforms?
Speed being the number one factor in a racing game, I think the ST version is fastest while Amiga looks prettier. ST for me even if the aspect ratio is wrong in this video.
for comparison purposes. You have a selection of music or sound fx. I added the music so you can get the full scope of how the game sounds while playing.
"Genesis - this is Lotus 2" I know this. But it was billed as the original. Doesn't matter if it's different because if I didn't add it, I would have been asked why I didn't add it. Damned if I do & Damned if I don't. :\
I always thought that the annoying sound effect that constantly playing in spectrum and Amstrad versions was a bug where it was supposed to be playing the music track chosen in the menu. I cant imagine what the sound is supposed to be if it is legit as its not in any other version.
I think the SEGA version is the best "Gameplay wise" Faster smoother and just so much more fun. I have played all versions of Lotus, 1 2 etc.. on all different formats.. The Amiga has the best music and is the first place I ever played it but gameplay wise its not the best but not the worst.. I can't get over how much better the Amstrad CPC is compared to Spectrum and C64.. Amstrad wins in the 8bit category.. 16bit category joint 1st Mega Drive and Amiga.
+Trusteft Blame the programmers for what? The hardware that the ST came with? Sure, one can make it to play very crummy samples and MODs, but that's kind of cheating.
This makes me wish there was a cartridge version of the C64 game with a second SID chip built in so that one could play with simultaneous music and sound effects for real.
The Genesis version, while it seems to be a playable behind-the-car racer, lacks the weirdness factor of the others. What were they thinking with the 'working on _a_ car at the bottom of the screen while you race,' I wonder, beyond having less screen to update for the racer portion. I suppose that it's 'ergonomic' to race at the top of the screen if you aren't going to use the whole thing, but that also seems weird. I remember when this came out, but don't recall having played it on any system. Then again, I'm not really of fan of behind-the-car racing games in general. Who's driving the car?=)
first of all... amiga was the best. second try comparing the genesis to lotus 2 on the amiga (as this is what is shown on genesis) and it will still lose to the amiga (it even loses to lotus 1 on the amiga despite being lotus 2 on the genesis).
Not all, but probably 1/2 were, with the rest being made up mostly of aga (the 32bit chipset in a1200 + a4000's) games, some with added intros and/or cd music. The a1200 (which the cd32 was, along with the addition of updated system roms and an extra custom chip) was seldom pushed either 'cos by it's release the amiga was commercially dying. Wasnt a huge upgrade, but significant still. Different levels of tech obviously, but the Gamecube and Wii is a good parallel, with the latter being basically a faster version of the former with a better graphics chip. AGA = 256 colors/8bitplanes, which can be split to 2x16 color playfields (for eg. fullscreen parallax scrolling) with 8 sprites per line that are 64 pixels wide, by up to 270 pixels high. A500 = 64 colors/6 bitplanes, which can be split to 2x8 color playfields, with 8 sprites per scanline that are 16 pixels wide by up to 270 pixels high. The AGA chipset can also move data around up to 4x as fast as an a500 and the a1200/cd32 has a cpu roughly 4x as fast (although in practice its closer to 2.5x with some exceptions). So, somewhat more capable without being an entirely different generation. As to why I wrote this lengthy a response (and one that freely exchanges a1200/cd32 and aga throughout the elaboration, and uses "A500" rather than ocs/ecs based amiga with a 7.14mhz 68000), ergo probably not completely clear unless you know the machines).......... ..... OCD. I couldnt refrain :-)
From what I saw in documentaries, the Amiga CD32 actually sold moderately well in the UK (it even did better than the Sega CD), but it faded into obscurity quickly because Commodore itself went down.
Something feels wrong in the c64 and st versions - I can't put my finger on what. Something with the car sprites/colour palette. Anyway, for me, I'd say the Amiga is obviously the best version however I think I'd prefer... MegaDrive > Amiga/CPC > Speccy > c64/st
Top Gear (or Top Racer) for SNES is essentially LETC minus the Lotus license. The title song appears as the soundtrack of the 4th stage in every country.
I may be wrong but isn't the genesis a different game. Its based on lotus 2. Also even being a Sega guy the amiga port is better. Music rocks.
You're correct.

Gaming History Source Well either way great video. Thanks for the upload
@Professor Mike AmericanuckRadio It isn't a direct port of either afaik. It just borrows the gameplay and some music. Not sure about tracks.
I keep getting impressed with what they got out of that Amstrad sound chip. It's not a sid, but it isn't bad either!
This was an Amiga game and it shows, mind you this reminded me of my pet peeve with the game back in the day, one of the music channels was shared with the sfx.
Lotus Esprit for the Amstrad at the start? :-)
Love these compare videos. I appreciate how much work goes into them.
I remember Lotus and Titus making great games in the past.
That amiga music will forever be ingrained upon my sole and that’s a damn good thing.
The music is ingrained on the bottom of your foot? What does that even mean?
Different variations of Barry Leitchs music? Im game!
funny that the Genesis/Mega Drive version is actually part 2 but they named it "part 1" :)
That's why I added it. :)
And the 3 is the 2 on Genesis
Glad you're posting this. I needed it today.
Glad I could help. :D

Nice one! Even with the Spectrum version, I'd have been well pleased to get a 3D racer like that back in the day.
Keep up the great work, thoroughly enjoy your channel and I try to give credit whenever I use any of your footage
Damn, the Amiga versions are SO much better than the rest it's not even funny...
I loved Lotus 3 on the Amiga. Great soundtrack, great track design and RECS meant loads of replayability.
Did not expect every version to look so good, even the ZX version looks decent to play. Not very common.
Why the title music remember a lot the bgm from Top gear (snes)
Specifically the Bordeaux theme? That theme is pretty much the same. Some stuff was reused from the Lotus games in Top Gear as it was made by some of the same people. I'm not that knowledgeable but they might have made Top Gear a different game to get around the the restriction that SNES games just not be on other platforms?
Also the Congratulations theme is the title screen of Top Gear
Speed being the number one factor in a racing game, I think the ST version is fastest while Amiga looks prettier. ST for me even if the aspect ratio is wrong in this video.
I'm an ST guy, but I've got to admit / say I think the Amiga version is much smoother - looks like 50 fps instead of the 25 on the ST...
Well said.
You sure? The Amiga version looks smoother to me as I would expect it to be.
Why added music to Commodore? I dont understand!
for comparison purposes. You have a selection of music or sound fx. I added the music so you can get the full scope of how the game sounds while playing.
hit 10:43 & read the menu. I selected SFX then overlaid the music.
@@GamingHistorySource oh ok. But Don t is better put a video with sound and anothrr video with sfx?
Genesis - this is Lotus 2.
Spectrum - better sound than Amstrad ??? Suprise !
"Genesis - this is Lotus 2" I know this. But it was billed as the original. Doesn't matter if it's different because if I didn't add it, I would have been asked why I didn't add it. Damned if I do & Damned if I don't. :\

BTW - +1 for movie
Amiga Music kicks ass! As always.
I Fucking LOVE this game.
I played it a lot on Atari ST and Amiga.
FUN game.
I always thought that the annoying sound effect that constantly playing in spectrum and Amstrad versions was a bug where it was supposed to be playing the music track chosen in the menu. I cant imagine what the sound is supposed to be if it is legit as its not in any other version.
The Mega Drive has a "yee ha!" button (c). That is all.
Why they always change music on Amiga CD 32 ports?
I know it has better sound quality, but why not remake the same song with the better sounds?
I think the SEGA version is the best "Gameplay wise" Faster smoother and just so much more fun. I have played all versions of Lotus, 1 2 etc.. on all different formats.. There was an Archimedes version too (might be lotus 2?)
I thought so too. I looked for it but could turn up nothing.
haha, I just looked in my Archimedes collection and I actually have Lotus 2! So yeah, that exists :)
I knew about that one. Didn't think I ever saw part 1 for it.
There is one. It's probably the best version, given the Archimedes is such a fine machine.
22:32 car looks like a ferrari F355 prototype model
I lol'd at the Atari ST just using 8bit music.
Torico That’s what I love about the ST :)
Not the fault of the ST. Blame the programmers. Not that I have a problem with it, I love "ST music".
+Trusteft
Blame the programmers for what? The hardware that the ST came with? Sure, one can make it to play very crummy samples and MODs, but that's kind of cheating.
Not even going to give you a proper reply.
The Atari ST has the same sound hardware as the Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum
Sega lotus is based on lotus 2,and wasnt there a pc port?
Only the third Lotus game had a DOS port.
Amiga is the Best!! Great Sound👍
This makes me wish there was a cartridge version of the C64 game with a second SID chip built in so that one could play with simultaneous music and sound effects for real.
You can upgrade your C64 to house 2 SID chips. Not sure if it's a hack or official.
Zx Spectrum is almost monocromatic in the most of the games but have very better definition than Commodore!
The Genesis version, while it seems to be a playable behind-the-car racer, lacks the weirdness factor of the others. There is a flash game called, Free Gear and it's very similar to this. Maybe it is even based off of this?
The ST game is faster than the Amiga so plays bit better... but that sounds better. music wise I think.
Yes atari version with 25 fps is faster than 50 fps Amiga version xddddd.
Played this on my atari st at the time
first of all... amiga was the best. second try comparing the genesis to lotus 2 on the amiga (as this is what is shown on genesis) and it will still lose to the amiga (it even loses to lotus 1 on the amiga despite being lotus 2 on the genesis).
I have the Genesis version,and it’s amazing😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉
The Amstrad version looks like a watered down port of the ZX Spectrum version.
Which actually it is!
Sad to see the good intro for the C64 and the bad Spectrum intro that was used for the Amstrad... Vespertino is coming
You should try making a Let's Compare Myst video
Top Gear music
Amiga FTW!
Naah, bruh... Lotus II: RECS... all day. The Genesis version of the intro theme is STILL stuck in my head.
Lotus 3 was where it was at. Typing random words into RECS to see what tracks it would generate.
Megadrive one shouldn’t be here as its based on Lotus II, hence why its not called Lotus ‘Esprit’ Turbo Challenge
Why is it that so many Amstrad CPC ports are lazy ZX Spectrum ports? The CPC could do way better than that !
The Spectrum is the best computers of all times for programming then is more Easy programme in the Speccy than in Amstrad!
No wonder the cd32 failed, the games were all straight ports from the 16bit amiga
Toon Nufc yeah, main problem was that the cd32 was just a a1200, which wasnt that big of an improvement over the a500.
Not all, but probably 1/2 were, with the rest being made up mostly of aga (the 32bit chipset in a1200 + a4000's) games, some with added intros and/or cd music.

Cool
Amiga.
@@mastersproutgamer9327 Not this time, no. 95% of time, yes.
I like the Amiga version and the Amiga CD 32 version
hands down original amiga is the best , mainly because of the sfx and music ... tho game overall ... its has too flat earth
MD's version shouldn't have been included in this video because it's a different game.
And the sound is raping my ears
Trrrrragic!
@ben owen meeeh. MD has some great tunes but this is not compatible with my hearing spectrum 😁
Sega Genesis Wins!
It’s too bad this game wasn’t ported to a console That could make it run fast since a Lotis is A fast 🚗💨.... these just look like Shit
Ridículo a versao de mega drive

MegaDrive > Amiga/CPC > Speccy > c64/st
The ST version is definitely emulated here, it's not 100% accurate. It's actually one of the best driving/racing games on the ST.
C64 version looks awful...
Genesis wins.
Not really, On genesis it's a different game based on lotus 2. The amiga port is better.
