R-Type (アールタイプ?) is a side scrolling shooter arcade game produced by Irem in 1987. The player controls a space fighter named R-9a "Arrowhead" to defend humanity against a mysterious but powerful alien life-form known as "Bydo", which was later discovered to be not entirely alien in origin. R-Type is recognized as one of the classics of the shooter genre from the 1980s arcade.
R-Type is set in the 22nd century, and the player flies a futuristic fighter craft called the R-9a "Arrowhead", named for its shape, and because it is the ninth model in the 'R' series of fighter craft (but it is the first of the series to actually be used in combat; the previous models were all prototypes). The mission is to 'blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire'. The significance of the R- in the series title refers to the production code as well as the term of endearment for the player fighter craft, the "Round Canopy".
The original R-Type was well received by most gaming critics. However, it was also infamous for its relentless difficulty. It earned 7th place in IGN's Top 10 most difficult games to beat. The gameplay of R-Type is noticeably distinct among shoot 'em ups. Invariably the player will lose, not because of an inequality in firepower, but because of the design of the levels themselves. There is usually a 'correct' way to get through a level, but players must learn these by experience - i.e. by losing and restarting from earlier in the level.

Thank you for the honor to be featured among gaming history! I was a big fan of your let's compare and while coding the pico-8 version I was using your old video as reference and was secretly dreaming of being featured in one of these. Today the dream came true! I will continue working on the Mega drive version. For whoever might be curios, the pico-8 version is 128x128 16 colors and the whole game with 4 levels fits in 32 Kb of Lua code.
It is an amazing port & an amazing job ! It was my pleasure having it in the video. :)
Lil' fact: The NES R-Type is actually a hack of a bootleg port titled Magic Dragon, which had weirdly redone but familiar enough graphics and music.
Of course TG16 version would be the same as the PC Engine version; they're the same console.

You missed five more things: The Java Mobile, ColecoVision (Team Pixelboy), Adobe Flash, PC-8801, and Atari Jaguar ports. Also, you need to have the MSX2 logo for the FM sound version. Other than that, nice job on making the video.
The Java is mentioned in the videos other information section. The Colecovision version is the MSX version, The Adobe Flash version is no longer available, There is no PC8801 version & the Jaguar version is the Atari ST version. It would have been redundant to include them.

DIdnt know there was an NES...or a hack of a nes game to make an R-type. Kind of wish there was an actual version though. Its kind of strange that game somehow came out on nearly every system except the NES/Famicom.

Woof, that NES version is tragic. Shockingly bad. Even taking into account being an 8-bit machine. The sega master system version is gorgeous, while that NES port looks like a bad gameboy color port.
It appears to be home brew but that is no excuse since the Amstrad home brew is great but for some reason home brew games are not as mainstream as some other platforms

@@GamingHistorySource By the way, when making the Elevator Action remake video, if you don't have the Switch or the PS4, you can either ask for the Arcade Archives footage uploaded by certain TH-camrs or you can simulate the footage from scratch yourself like you did to the Evercade version shown here.
Where does the MS-DOS version come from? And why it says Nintendo in the title screen? I don't think there was an R-Type port for DOS.
There also more homebrew games in the video other than the Pico and MegaDrive versions. The NES one is also homebrew.
The MS DOS version was an arcade conversion made for DOS but I believe it was the version that was licensed to Nintendo for Arcade Use. If you look at the arcade cabinet, it is a Nintendo Cab. Look at the arcade marquee & you'll see Nintendo on it. Very weird but that's how Irem did it then.
It doesn’t look like any DOS game I’ve ever seen, the graphics are nearly identical to the arcade version. A typical DOS game was 320x200 with 256 colors.
Maybe a much later port. Dont believe that any game released in 1987 could look that good on DOS (obviously using VGA mode and at least strong 386 CPU).

It really, really shouldn't as they are not the same game. The super nintendo game is a mix of r-type 1 and 2 and the third lightning is a totally different game overall. By that token he should include r-type 2, r-types and every other game that has r-type in the title...

The NES version looks surprisingly good given its limited hardware capabilities. I’d imagine that porting a 16-bit arcade game to an 8-bit console is challenging.
