Lots of infuriating misinformation in this one though. Makes me think that there might be in all of them and I'm just too ignorant in the other subjects they talk about to know better. I work with plastic for a living and the only valid concern they voice is the pollution killing marine life. Nothing else in the video is concerning or a problem unless you are looking in at an industry from the outside.

But obviously it’s pricey and people don’t bother to spend more money to chose eco friendly products here. I really would like to translate this video into Chinese and show them if it is ok.
Seattle just passed the first ban on straws in the U.S., which is important because straws are particularly difficult to recycle due to their size. And also important because Starbucks is based in Seattle and has already innovated a lid that does not require a straw for iced drinks.

Most of the oceanic plastic pollution is happening in Asia and Africa, it's not just a few plastic straws, and nothing we can do will stop it. Here in Seattle we like to think we're so enlightened, but it's all meaningless symbolic gestures that mostly make us feel good about ourselves, and not much else.
How about... we don't use either... and go to stores with our own metal stuff... so we can get stuff that has already been made served to us? Like going to buy stuff, but you have to package your own stuff and obviously wash it. Idk it doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. The problem is though, that would take up a lot of metal and then, wouldn't you know it, we ran out of metal.

Not only that, they received other funding from organizations like Open Philanthropy (keep in mind, these organizations are all from multi-billionaires, yea, that's how they have such high quality) Yes, I get it, not all videos are sponsored by billionaire organizations but they're a major part (more so than viewer funding) of how they're able to make such high quality animations
I think it's worth noting that the reusable bag study found several actually viable alternatives: Non-woven polypropylene bags: 37 reuses Woven polypropylene bags: 32 reuses Recycled polyethylene terephthalate bags: 96 reuses Recycled Polyester bags: 35 reuses Cotton was just the worst, unless maybe you make it yourself out of clothing you'd otherwise throw away. Of course, these are also plastics but I think multi-use makes a huge difference over single-use especially when it can be recycled or disposed of more responsibly (plus is less likely to fly away).
I've been using a hemp cloth bag or almost 3 years now! Hemp needs little water and is just about as durable as cotton. Durable cloth bags from responsible sources are awesome.

Someone who wants it to last longer. As the video just said, plastic wrap keeps products safe to eat longer, keeping more out of the trash and lowering the environmental impact more than not using plastic would have. And, yes, even still in the peel, plastic wrap will keep a banana from going bad longer. The fix is to change the chemistry of the plastic so it breaks down safely. People are working on this, and have already created safe, biodegradeable, and even affordable plastic containers...which are often banned because they're still technically plastic and we're scared of plastic now even though it has lower environmental impact than the alternative.
I suppose one way to help reduce waste is to give incentives to companies for making their products 100% recyclable. Looking around my room there really isn't much that is plastic, but the stuff that is isn't one-use.
Lashan Not exactly feasible to make everything 100% recyclable. And like the cotton bag example in the video. Most of the time, producing one-use plastic items is more economical and more eco-friendly in climate change terms than producing a re-usuable item of the same purpose. The only way the governments could theoretically provide incentives for all the companies is to subsidise a substitute material to plastic, such as cotton or paper and subsidise research on how to reduce emissions released when making products with those materials. But to keep the economy stable, the government would have to subsidise every single company to provide incentive for *all* of them to quit using plastic. There'd also need to be research on how to make the substitute material as strong as plastic and as versatile and flexible as plastic. Which would cost the governments of the world billions. Not a wise move to invest no much money into a theoretical substitute for plastic, which has served us pretty well so far. The only feasible solution I can really see is to further encourage recycling, tax plastic wastage even more and develop a new form of material that's more biodegradable to use as wrapping.
The government enforces a pollution quota, meaning businesses can only pollute at a set amount. They pay for the right to polite X amount, and the overall sum total is determined by the government. Businesses which under pollute are then able to sell their pollution rights to other companies. This actually helps reduce all forms of pollution by a lot. Tightenkng this policy or creating similar ones globally would actually work wonders because money (and losing less of it to the government) is unfortunately one of if not the biggest incentive in modern civilization.
Yea we should... but will we save our environment? I think it will become a bigger problem in the future and humanity will just accept the situation, until they sink in their own dirt. We have to start NOW, because the pollution won't disappear. Its becoming more and more.

@xennophelia - Well, depending on your area and your waste management/recycling systems, sometimes throwing the plastic away IS the better option. For example; here in Hawaii we have H-Power which is a facility that burns most of our trash to create less landfill waste and to generate power, we also have no plastic recycling on the island and instead ship it to China. In our case, studies have shown that tossing the plastic in the trash to be burned is less impactful than sending it across the ocean in an attempt to recycle it. In other words, you need to check out how your local plastic trash/recycling is handled and where it eventually ends up. Then go from there. That is also why most people don't even bother, because 20 minutes of research is asking too much of them. It's pretty sad.
Thank you for including the bit about how some of our plastic substitutes are actually less environmentally friendly (the grocery bag example). I recently learned about that and it really rocked my world view about what it means to be environmentally friendly
The video kind of contradicts itself at that point. All of the parts about plastic taking forever to break down and getting into our food chain and everything still applies to it beyond just the manufacturing process. For the long term health of the planet, the cotton bag is significantly more sustainable. Also, I'd like to know what the pollution numbers are on making 7100 plastic bags vs one cotton bag, since they said one cotton bag needs to be used 7100 times to make up for the pollution difference in manufacturing.
Dean Natuno I think it’s not that bad when natural things are thrown away(fruits, paper, etc.) because those are in the environment anyways and it might actually make the environment healthier because when it decomposes it creates compost which is good for soil. Just not when people throw away plastic because it will be there for generations to come.

The idea that littering is more attributable to individuals being careless than disposable packaging producers is an idea paid for by the packaging industry. Look at the origins of the "crying Indian" PSA paid for and produced by the largest plastic and packaging conglomerates in the world.
And the researcher of this video missed the information where developed countries export most of their waste to China, India and Africa by exploiting the often lax environmental standards in these developing countries. If you really care about the planet, start by changing your lifestyle and get your government to recycle their own waste instead of shifting the blame and responsibility to countries that are still developing and may not have the wealth or technology to dispose all their waste properly. The people in these developing countries already have enough shit to deal with.
I remember learning a few years ago that in the South-East of Asia, someone invented bags and cups that were actually made in a seaweed fiber, and could also be eaten if you wanted it (seriously, because they dissolved into your mouth, and you could put salt on them) or throw them into the ocean without any worries because they would dissolve completely in organic material. I genuinely wonder why that stuff didn't go "popular" and everyone forgot or never noticed it :( because if it did, It would have changed many things in my opinion.
If it dissolves in your mouth, I don't understand how it could also be used for long term storage of manufactured goods. Plastic works so well in single serving things you buy at the store because it doesn't degrade from moisture - the seaweed fiber would last like a week on a store shelf and degrade
@@heckingbamboozled8097 This is the same reason why paper straws don't work, they get soggy as they sit in a drink. A true solution has to work, be convenient and be affordable. And it's hard to make something like that.
I used to take them back to the grocery store's bins, but I now have 4 cloth bags and only use a plastic bag for trash. But some of those have holes in the bottom.
And I mean nothing is stopping you from just reusing them and they're often so thin that they can easily be folded into a pocket. I usually just always carry some sort of bag on me so I never need to buy one and if I do I take it home and store it so I can reuse it. The only real downside to plastic bags is that they're not as strong as cotton ones so you have to be a bit more careful when loading them and unlike a cotton bag you can't repair them if they do start to break. But keeping that in mind I just pack different bags depending on the ammount of shopping I expect to do. Also even a plastic bag with broken handles can be reused as a trash bag.
I'm an international student from Korea studying in the US. As soon as I came to the States, I was so surprised about the way of the America to take care of garbages. In Korea, every single houses and apartments has garbage bins for recycling as many as the ones for landfills and incinerations... but in my dormitory and American house that I had chance to visit, there is no such thing as recycling bin and almost all the trashes were taken to landfill. The United States is literally the most developed and advanced country in the world, and they says that they take care of environment... but I simply cannot agree with them. They need to change some basic things, like distributing more recycling bings, before they do something insignificant such as changing for disposable bags or building wind power generator.

Recycling in many places in the US is a lie: it just goes to the landfill. Single-source bins have to be separated, and again, some of that material like glass isn't useful without a glass maker nearby to take it. They even put ♻️ with numbers in to make people think plastic was recyclable when it's not.
Strongly disagree with “‘most developed country in the world” there. Rich maybe but they lack some very basic concepts like healthcare, and the one you just mentioned.

I don't think you understand. If you spend 100 years slowly accumulating plastics, it's gonna take at least 100 years to completely clean it up. There is no quick fix to it. We need hard work to counteract our hard refuse. Everyone wants a quick resolution, but the fact is it might solve it for a day, a year, a hundred. But our children's children will still have to deal with it. We're just passing the responsibility to others.
Biodegradable plastics require certain conditions to degrade, otherwise they're just as bad as normal plastic. Degradable plastics will just break down into microplastics which are worse. Compostable plastic need to be taken to a special composting facility as they can't be placed in your backyard compost. Best thing you can do is reduce your plastic consumption and move to more eco friendly options.

I'd like to point out, though, that in addition to avoiding directly consuming plastic products, I think we all ought to consider more critically the plastic pollution inherent in the production of non-plastic products we consume. Refusing plastic straws is great, but a 2018 study (1) showed that plastic straws only compose about .03% of the plastic in the GPGP. On the contrary, discarded fishing equipment accounts for 46% of that plastic. That means avoiding fish is 3 orders of magnitude more effective at preventing plastic pollution than avoiding plastic straws is. That is an incredible figure. And even without all the plastic pollution, the fishing industry is incredibly unsustainable. Plastic kills millions of marine animals in a year (2), but millions of marine animal are killed for food each minute (3). That has a far more devastating impact on ecosystems than plastic does. Fish populations are declining at an alarming rate (4), and considering the ocean's role as one of our planet's best carbon sinks, that's a terrifying prospect. If you want to engender positive change, cutting out fish, or better yet adopting a plant based diet, is the most effective method of making an individual sustainable impact.

They keep on getting more and more plastic and don't have a way to get rid of it since like I said it has long degrading time. Burning plastic is also not a good way because plastic releases many harmful gasses when burned.

If the manufacturing processes that go into making a reusable cotton bag cause it to have the same impact on the environment as 7,100 plastic bags, and a reusable bag has to be used over 7,100 times to have a lower overall impact on the environment, that means you would have to use it every day for 19.4 years. If you only go shopping once a week, it would take 135 years. So you will never use a reusable bag enough times within your lifetime to justify it. And let's not forget, that reusable bag wouldn't last 7,100 shopping trips anyway. It will eventually wear out, rip, or get lost, and you will have to replace it, so it will always be worse for the environment.

I'd take into account though that you (or at least I do) usually use more than one plastic bag when I shop. Either one by itself doesn't have enough strength to hole the groceries thus you double bag, or I would get like 5 bag worths of groceries so the time span isn't completely valid

I use a good quality plastic reusable bag, I've used it to lift weights it shouldnt be able to withstand, i bought it for about 1 euro and it's lasted me 2 years so far. I highly recommend it

A good way to avert the conundrum of deciding whether or not recycling plastic is worth it is to re-use those one-use items that are usually thrown away so quickly. Even if you only re-use each item once, you effectively double its useful lifespan. Examples: I keep disposable plastic grocery bags that I get from stores to be later used as trash can liners. I use the cable ties that come with many electronic devices for future cable storage and management. I retain cardboard and paper boxes and packaging envelopes for storage or sending items later on. When I have an item that breaks I always try my best to repair or salvage whatever I can from it before buying a new one. There are many other examples too, many of which are even better for the environment (and your wallet) than recycling. Please upvote this so more people see it!

We could also get companies to stop using disposable plastic, like drinks and food from fast food places or have more locally owned businesses creating the sandwiches so they don't need to be packaged in plastic all the time.
reusing something just once will be twice as good for the environment than even recycling it, as all the material used, and carbon produced making it isnt "wasted" when the disposable material is thrown away. however in my coat pocket is a carrier bag from 3 years ago that i use to carry my mcdonalds food in, roughly once every 3 weeks. I do this, becuse at least half of the time i used the paper bags McDonalds give, it would fall apart before i got home, wasting food. I also can't re-use that bag, so all the energy used to create it is instantly wasted. not to mention the paper bag is as recyclable as the plastic one, you just need to know where to find the recycling points. another great example is "paper" cups at coffee shops. they aren't really paper, they are paper coated with plastic. these cant be recycled. 100% paper is impossible because it would fall apart after minutes. the irony is a 100% plastic cup would be far better for the environment. its light weight, can be stored for years, wont fall apart during use, and because it is a single material, can easily be recycled in the end. what would be even better is having a reusable flask.

When I was in third grade my teacher didn't have anything good for science and I suggested kurzgesagt and now I'm in fifth grade and seeing a kurzgesagt video after 2 years is truly touching to me
Here's one way to reduce plastic waste: *Prevent planned obsolescence* By designing things to make them break sooner, it means more things are thrown away. Standards and regulations should be set up that prevents planned obsolescence from being a feature for industry owners. However, that might never happen because of lobbyists.

Look at older generations though.. they kept garages filled with parts and continued to fix what broke. I feel like it's a "new" culture of consumerism that keepS people buying new things over and over, regardless of its necessity. I'd like to see Kurzgesagt run a video on the pros and cons of consumerism. Think about all the wasteful marketing dollars spent to get sales. The waste in markdowns below cost at the end of a seasonal buy. For what gain though? A smaller economy? Less innovation $s and harder financing? Anyway.. interesting.
@@kingslushie1018 I feel like this overlooks the fact that technology gets better and better and that upgrading a phone might mean a better processor, graphics card, wifi enabled hardware, etc.. kind of a chicken and egg thing though right? Sometimes the available hardware drives the technology that uses it and other times we have software that is just waiting for the "instantaneous" 5G to come along to support it. I guess it just matters where you as a consumer sit in the cycle. (personally.... I just want a better camera)
Kurzgesagt is so nuanced. It's refreshing to hear someone honestly acknowledge the complicated problems of food waste, energy, and developing countries' infrastructure. But without using it as an excuse for business-as-usual.

Well, that's the first objective video on the plastics issue that I've watched so far. People need to see both sides of the coin not only the 'plastics should be banned' kind of view.

@@eeva4700 As Auro said, it's that banning plastics actually makes things even worse. That we need to solve the problem, not just ban the thing. There is actually a solution that was getting traction, but it keeps being hampered by the "ban plastics" fanatics. It's to make the plastics degrade well. There are bioplastic clamshell containers that could replace a lot of existing plastic clamshell containers (those clear, hinged food containers you see cupcakes and sandwiches in on supermarket shelves that click closed). The same plastic can be used in straws if you believed the 9 year old who tricked millions of people into thinking plastic straws were scary. Others are working on bioplastic shopping bags, bioplastic diapers exist, etc. Even in the 80's, McDonalds hired a company to develop biodegradeable foam containers...but thanks to a large number of gullible people who listened to paper mills and didn't double check first, they pressured McDonalds until it switched to less environmentally friendly paper containers. If you want to save the environment, you have to solve the problem in a better way, not ban the solution that you're scared of. Plastic containers and single use plastics solve an ENORMOUS problem for humanity. If you want the plastics gone, solve the problem the plastics are solving better. And actually make sure your solution is better, unlike the cotton reuseable bags, metal straws, glass plates that get washed with detergents and a lot of heated freshwater many times a day, and other cumulative environmental disasters you forgot when you focused on getting rid of one thing. (The 9 year old was named Milo Cress, if you feel like looking up who duped you into thinking single use straws were the bane of humanity.)
Merennulli absolutely this. The truth about any issue is that banning the problem doesn’t solve it. Proper education and better innovation does. Think about cigarettes or tobacco. It was a hip thing to do back then but it became increasingly apparent that the substance was bad for our health. Banning cigarettes wouldn’t make them go away. But with proper education and finding alternatives that would appeal to the public, it would lead to a phasing out of the medium you’re looking to remove. Plastic would be no different. Teaching people how to recycle and continuing to develop material that can do the same job as plastic and not impact the world as much is how you would be able to get rid of plastic once and for all

@@RadicalUnderstanding Generally those that need straws are children, those with certain disabilities and even the elderly. If you are unable to easily hold onto a drink to the point you use a straw then it is pretty needed to helps you drink instead of spilling it or going without. Imagine a world where young children, people with certain disabilities and the old couldn't easily drink in the summer and can have health risks and you will find that a straw is pretty important for a select group and removing them can actively be harmful and the option should be provided. Not to sound like that guy, but Del Monte did it help solve the issue of produce deserts in impoverished areas in our country. Bananas are the only fruit that refrigeration doesn't keep fresh so they filled the plastic wrapper with a gas that kept the bananas fresher for longer. This allowed bananas to be sold in convenient stores in places where those stores are your only close food option. It's by no means an ideal solution but it wasn't some thoughtless corporate ploy, their where good intentions behind it.

Cotton bag has 7100x bigger carbon footprint but on the other hand it's physical impact is tiny compared to 7100 plastic bags that will float around for up to 1000 years. It is indeed quite complicated but as a rule of thumb one use disposables are a bad idea.
I have to say that i like that video more than the other "against plastic" videos: - Most of the other video are like: "No no, you are a bad customer because you buy plastic" - Welp, there are whole industries that still producing plastic, either because they don't want to change or they can't change because there is no good alternative available which has the same physical properties plastics have. So before people should complain about plastic, they should also offer a better solution to replace it. - and what also needs to be addressed is that what happens if i throw plastic in the correct bin: what comes afterwards. How is the waste industry handle it? Because i don't think it's just the "normal person" which throws plastic in the ocean And we will just get that problem solved in the long run if people begin to research on alternatives and when they are there and they are equal to plastic, politics need to make sure financially that it's wiser to use the non-plastic alternative. I also liked that the alternative bags are addressed in the video: They are not that "good shit" which everyone wants to tell you and their materials have their own downsides, in the production process and also in usage. For example cleaning them if something you bought is not completely sealed anymore, is a pain in the ass because the fabric structure holds on to "things". The Plastic Bag has a much smoother surface, water over it and it's gone. And for all that complaining about that example, think about this: Like with every product which is intended to be used for a very long time, maintenance is a factor. I say this because some people turn low-key into clerics if you "dare" to complain about the plastic alternatives. My opinion is that not plastic is the problem, people are the problem.
Im a doing polymer science bachelor studies atm, so i do know my fair share about plastics. And let me tell u, plastics are just a scape goat for Humans. We dont want to be the bad guy so we blame materials etc... Plastics itself arent bad, as long as they are used proplerly and using them is still our Job. But sadly we simply dont use them properly, especially when it comes to recycling.

I remembered seeing one research in one of my classes saying that for as simple reusable cotton bag you need to use them 100 to 200 times to make it be worth it comparing to a plastic bag in terms of CO2. We're apart of this too, many of my peers litter without thinking of the consequence and they are also 15. Plastic is beneficial but it's important that we take the proper action and care. If everyone did their part, we wouldn't be having such a huge problem; however, it's our responsibility to get the change we need and want to see.

Young people always think they know what's wrong with the world and are VERY susceptible to the scary half of a story as you demonstrate here. Notice midway through they explained that simply banning the plastics would make things worse. There is no magic solution someone can just apply and fix everything. If there were, someone would have made a lot of money off of it and put it into place already. We're working on biodegradeable replacements, filters, recycling, and numerous other ways of addressing this, but crying "the old people are ruining the world" is just barely a step up from crying that you didn't get a second candy bar...wrapped in plastic.
What I always found interesting about this is that the materials to make plastic come from nature, so in a sense, just rearranging and changing the way these substances exist in our environment can have a massive impact. Chemistry is cool.

Not only that, they received other funding from organizations like Open Philanthropy (keep in mind, these organizations are all from multi-billionaires, yea, that's how they have such high quality) Yes, I get it, not all videos are sponsored by billionaire organizations but they're a major part (more so than viewer funding) of how they're able to make such high quality animations
I think it's worth noting that the reusable bag study found several actually viable alternatives:
Non-woven polypropylene bags: 37 reuses
Woven polypropylene bags: 32 reuses
Recycled polyethylene terephthalate bags: 96 reuses
Recycled Polyester bags: 35 reuses
Cotton was just the worst, unless maybe you make it yourself out of clothing you'd otherwise throw away.
Of course, these are also plastics but I think multi-use makes a huge difference over single-use especially when it can be recycled or disposed of more responsibly (plus is less likely to fly away).

I've been using a hemp cloth bag or almost 3 years now! Hemp needs little water and is just about as durable as cotton. Durable cloth bags from responsible sources are awesome.

Someone who wants it to last longer. As the video just said, plastic wrap keeps products safe to eat longer, keeping more out of the trash and lowering the environmental impact more than not using plastic would have. And, yes, even still in the peel, plastic wrap will keep a banana from going bad longer.
The fix is to change the chemistry of the plastic so it breaks down safely. People are working on this, and have already created safe, biodegradeable, and even affordable plastic containers...which are often banned because they're still technically plastic and we're scared of plastic now even though it has lower environmental impact than the alternative.

I suppose one way to help reduce waste is to give incentives to companies for making their products 100% recyclable. Looking around my room there really isn't much that is plastic, but the stuff that is isn't one-use.

no, I think he means that if companies see the economical benefits from recycling then they will accommodate their products to suit recycling better.
Lashan Not exactly feasible to make everything 100% recyclable. And like the cotton bag example in the video. Most of the time, producing one-use plastic items is more economical and more eco-friendly in climate change terms than producing a re-usuable item of the same purpose.
The only way the governments could theoretically provide incentives for all the companies is to subsidise a substitute material to plastic, such as cotton or paper and subsidise research on how to reduce emissions released when making products with those materials.
But to keep the economy stable, the government would have to subsidise every single company to provide incentive for *all* of them to quit using plastic.
There'd also need to be research on how to make the substitute material as strong as plastic and as versatile and flexible as plastic. Which would cost the governments of the world billions. Not a wise move to invest no much money into a theoretical substitute for plastic, which has served us pretty well so far.
The only feasible solution I can really see is to further encourage recycling, tax plastic wastage even more and develop a new form of material that's more biodegradable to use as wrapping.
Incentives? Why not form a company that buy used plastic and recycle those into new products.
The government enforces a pollution quota, meaning businesses can only pollute at a set amount. They pay for the right to polite X amount, and the overall sum total is determined by the government. Businesses which under pollute are then able to sell their pollution rights to other companies. This actually helps reduce all forms of pollution by a lot.
Tightenkng this policy or creating similar ones globally would actually work wonders because money (and losing less of it to the government) is unfortunately one of if not the biggest incentive in modern civilization.

@xennophelia - Well, depending on your area and your waste management/recycling systems, sometimes throwing the plastic away IS the better option. For example; here in Hawaii we have H-Power which is a facility that burns most of our trash to create less landfill waste and to generate power, we also have no plastic recycling on the island and instead ship it to China. In our case, studies have shown that tossing the plastic in the trash to be burned is less impactful than sending it across the ocean in an attempt to recycle it.
In other words, you need to check out how your local plastic trash/recycling is handled and where it eventually ends up. Then go from there. That is also why most people don't even bother, because 20 minutes of research is asking too much of them. It's pretty sad.

Thank you for including the bit about how some of our plastic substitutes are actually less environmentally friendly (the grocery bag example). I recently learned about that and it really rocked my world view about what it means to be environmentally friendly
The video kind of contradicts itself at that point. All of the parts about plastic taking forever to break down and getting into our food chain and everything still applies to it beyond just the manufacturing process. For the long term health of the planet, the cotton bag is significantly more sustainable. Also, I'd like to know what the pollution numbers are on making 7100 plastic bags vs one cotton bag, since they said one cotton bag needs to be used 7100 times to make up for the pollution difference in manufacturing.

Dean Natuno I think it’s not that bad when natural things are thrown away(fruits, paper, etc.) because those are in the environment anyways and it might actually make the environment healthier because when it decomposes it creates compost which is good for soil. And the researcher of this video missed the information where developed countries export most of their waste to China, India and Africa by exploiting the often lax environmental standards in these developing countries. If you really care about the planet, start by changing your lifestyle and get your government to recycle their own waste instead of shifting the blame and responsibility to countries that are still developing and may not have the wealth or technology to dispose all their waste properly. The people in these developing countries already have enough shit to deal with.

I remember learning a few years ago that in the South-East of Asia, someone invented bags and cups that were actually made in a seaweed fiber, and could also be eaten if you wanted it (seriously, because they dissolved into your mouth, and you could put salt on them) or throw them into the ocean without any worries because they would dissolve completely in organic material. I genuinely wonder why that stuff didn't go "popular" and everyone forgot or never noticed it :( because if it did, It would have changed many things in my opinion.
If it dissolves in your mouth, I don't understand how it could also be used for long term storage of manufactured goods. Plastic works so well in single serving things you buy at the store because it doesn't degrade from moisture - the seaweed fiber would last like a week on a store shelf and degrade

I used to take them back to the grocery store's bins, but I now have 4 cloth bags and only use a plastic bag for trash. But some of those have holes in the bottom.

And I mean nothing is stopping you from just reusing them and they're often so thin that they can easily be folded into a pocket. I usually just always carry some sort of bag on me so I never need to buy one and if I do I take it home and store it so I can reuse it. The only real downside to plastic bags is that they're not as strong as cotton ones so you have to be a bit more careful when loading them and unlike a cotton bag you can't repair them if they do start to break. But keeping that in mind I just pack different bags depending on the ammount of shopping I expect to do.
Also even a plastic bag with broken handles can be reused as a trash bag.
I'm an international student from Korea studying in the US. As soon as I came to the States, I was so surprised about the way of the America to take care of garbages. In Korea, every single houses and apartments has garbage bins for recycling as many as the ones for landfills and incinerations... but in my dormitory and American house that I had chance to visit, there is no such thing as recycling bin and almost all the trashes were taken to landfill.
The United States is literally the most developed and advanced country in the world, and they says that they take care of environment... but I simply cannot agree with them. They need to change some basic things, like distributing more recycling bings, before they do something insignificant such as changing for disposable bags or building wind power generator.

Recycling in many places in the US is a lie: it just goes to the landfill. Single-source bins have to be separated, and again, some of that material like glass isn't useful without a glass maker nearby to take it. They even put ♻️ with numbers in to make people think plastic was recyclable when it's not.

We don't dump trash made on land into oceans. There is no point in banning single use plastics. If they're buried they don't go anywhere.
I don't think you understand. If you spend 100 years slowly accumulating plastics, it's gonna take at least 100 years to completely clean it up. There is no quick fix to it. We need hard work to counteract our hard refuse. Everyone wants a quick resolution, but the fact is it might solve it for a day, a year, a hundred. But our children's children will still have to deal with it. We're just passing the responsibility to others.
Biodegradable plastics require certain conditions to degrade, otherwise they're just as bad as normal plastic. Degradable plastics will just break down into microplastics which are worse. Compostable plastic need to be taken to a special composting facility as they can't be placed in your backyard compost.
Best thing you can do is reduce your plastic consumption and move to more eco friendly options.

This video is awesome! I'd like to point out, though, that in addition to avoiding directly consuming plastic products, I think we all ought to consider more critically the plastic pollution inherent in the production of non-plastic products we consume.
Refusing plastic straws is great, but a 2018 study (1) showed that plastic straws only compose about .03% of the plastic in the GPGP. On the contrary, discarded fishing equipment accounts for 46% of that plastic. That means avoiding fish is 3 orders of magnitude more effective at preventing plastic pollution than avoiding plastic straws is. That is an incredible figure.
And even without all the plastic pollution, the fishing industry is incredibly unsustainable. Plastic kills millions of marine animals in a year (2), but millions of marine animal are killed for food each minute (3). That has a far more devastating impact on ecosystems than plastic does. Fish populations are declining at an alarming rate (4), and considering the ocean's role as one of our planet's best carbon sinks, that's a terrifying prospect.
If you want to engender positive change, cutting out fish, or better yet adopting a plant based diet, is the most effective method of making an individual sustainable impact.

If the manufacturing processes that go into making a reusable cotton bag cause it to have the same impact on the environment as 7,100 plastic bags, and a reusable bag has to be used over 7,100 times to have a lower overall impact on the environment, that means you would have to use it every day for 19.4 years. If you only go shopping once a week, it would take 135 years. So you will never use a reusable bag enough times within your lifetime to justify it. And let's not forget, that reusable bag wouldn't last 7,100 shopping trips anyway. It will eventually wear out, rip, or get lost, and you will have to replace it, so it will always be worse for the environment.

I'd take into account though that you (or at least I do) usually use more than one plastic bag when I shop. Either one by itself doesn't have enough strength to hole the groceries thus you double bag, or I would get like 5 bag worths of groceries so the time span isn't completely valid

I use a good quality plastic reusable bag, I've used it to lift weights it shouldnt be able to withstand, i bought it for about 1 euro and it's lasted me 2 years so far. I highly recommend it

A good way to avert the conundrum of deciding whether or not recycling plastic is worth it is to re-use those one-use items that are usually thrown away so quickly. Even if you only re-use each item once, you effectively double its useful lifespan.
Examples:
I keep disposable plastic grocery bags that I get from stores to be later used as trash can liners.
I use the cable ties that come with many electronic devices for future cable storage and management.
I retain cardboard and paper boxes and packaging envelopes for storage or sending items later on.
When I have an item that breaks I always try my best to repair or salvage whatever I can from it before buying a new one.
There are many other examples too, many of which are even better for the environment (and your wallet) than recycling. Please upvote this so more people see it!

We could also get companies to stop using disposable plastic, like drinks and food from fast food places or have more locally owned businesses creating the sandwiches so they don't need to be packaged in plastic all the time.
reusing something just once will be twice as good for the environment than even recycling it, as all the material used, and carbon produced making it isnt "wasted" when the disposable material is thrown away.
however in my coat pocket is a carrier bag from 3 years ago that i use to carry my mcdonalds food in, roughly once every 3 weeks. I do this, becuse at least half of the time i used the paper bags McDonalds give, it would fall apart before i got home, wasting food. I also can't re-use that bag, so all the energy used to create it is instantly wasted. not to mention the paper bag is as recyclable as the plastic one, you just need to know where to find the recycling points.
another great example is "paper" cups at coffee shops. they aren't really paper, they are paper coated with plastic. these cant be recycled. 100% paper is impossible because it would fall apart after minutes. the irony is a 100% plastic cup would be far better for the environment. its light weight, can be stored for years, wont fall apart during use, and because it is a single material, can easily be recycled in the end. what would be even better is having a reusable flask.

Well, that's the first objective video on the plastics issue that I've watched so far. People need to see both sides of the coin not only the 'plastics should be banned' kind of view.

@@eeva4700 As Auro said, it's that banning plastics actually makes things even worse. That we need to solve the problem, not just ban the thing. There is actually a solution that was getting traction, but it keeps being hampered by the "ban plastics" fanatics. It's to make the plastics degrade well. There are bioplastic clamshell containers that could replace a lot of existing plastic clamshell containers (those clear, hinged food containers you see cupcakes and sandwiches in on supermarket shelves that click closed). The same plastic can be used in straws if you believed the 9 year old who tricked millions of people into thinking plastic straws were scary. Others are working on bioplastic shopping bags, bioplastic diapers exist, etc. Even in the 80's, McDonalds hired a company to develop biodegradeable foam containers...but thanks to a large number of gullible people who listened to paper mills and didn't double check first, they pressured McDonalds until it switched to less environmentally friendly paper containers.
If you want to save the environment, you have to solve the problem in a better way, not ban the solution that you're scared of. Plastic containers and single use plastics solve an ENORMOUS problem for humanity. If you want the plastics gone, solve the problem the plastics are solving better. And actually make sure your solution is better, unlike the cotton reuseable bags, metal straws, glass plates that get washed with detergents and a lot of heated freshwater many times a day, and other cumulative environmental disasters you forgot when you focused on getting rid of one thing.

Think about cigarettes or tobacco. It was a hip thing to do back then but it became increasingly apparent that the substance was bad for our health. Banning cigarettes wouldn’t make them go away. But with proper education and finding alternatives that would appeal to the public, it would lead to a phasing out of the medium you’re looking to remove.
Plastic would be no different. Teaching people how to recycle and continuing to develop material that can do the same job as plastic and not impact the world as much is how you would be able to get rid of plastic once and for all

If you are unable to easily hold onto a drink to the point you use a straw then it is pretty needed to helps you drink instead of spilling it or going without. Imagine a world where young children, people with certain disabilities and the old couldn't easily drink in the summer and can have health risks and you will find that a straw is pretty important for a select group and removing them can actively be harmful and the option should be provided. Basically the solution is often not remove something completely but find better ways to do it so the people that need it can still access it.

If the micro plastics are toxic or ruin our testosterone then yes, otherwise there have been efforts to create plastic eating bacteria that will for sure be able to clean out a lot of the problems we have. It's really up to cleaning up the 90% locations and teaching their people and governments that they are "selling us all down the river" with their pollution

Australia just banned one use plastic bags yesterday!
the Irony is that A more trees will be cut down for paper and B Australia's plastic use is not the real issue, it's Asia's (like China/India) People think plastic bags are the only issue, but they are not, in fact if people would recycle said bags the bags would not even be an issue at all, it's far more the one use plastic items that people use which are the problem.

Not to sound like that guy, but Del Monte did it help solve the issue of produce deserts in impoverished areas in our country. Bananas are the only fruit that refrigeration doesn't keep fresh so they filled the plastic wrapper with a gas that kept the bananas fresher for longer. This allowed bananas to be sold in convenient stores in places where those stores are your only close food option. It's by no means an ideal solution but it wasn't some thoughtless corporate ploy, their where good intentions behind it.

India produce huge waste as well but India is dedicated towards eco friendly and better world. UN delegates were there in India this environment day and Beat the Plastic was theme I still remember it. Doesn't matter what Trump thinks n says of India but India have valued nature's importance from early times. It was big set back seeing US withdrawing from climate and environment protection programs. A week ago Delhi was brought to halt by protests coz govt planned to cut down 14K trees to pave road and make residential area in Delhi but people protested and stopped the program n saved the trees. India has great recrod for plant and Wild life preservation. Jungle Book and Mowgali all were inspired by Human link with forest and animals. People have sacrificed their lives for plants..I Wish somebody does a movie on this story as well.

Cotton bag has 7100x bigger carbon footprint but on the other hand it's physical impact is tiny compared to 7100 plastic bags that will float around for up to 1000 years. It is indeed quite complicated but as a rule of thumb one use disposables are a bad idea.

I have to say that i like that video more than the other "against plastic" videos:
- Most of the other video are like: "No no, you are a bad customer because you buy plastic"
- Welp, there are whole industries that still producing plastic, either because they don't want to change or they can't change because there is no good alternative available which has the same physical properties plastics have. So before people should complain about plastic, they should also offer a better solution to replace it.
- and what also needs to be addressed is that what happens if i throw plastic in the correct bin: what comes afterwards. How is the waste industry handle it? Because i don't think it's just the "normal person" which throws plastic in the ocean
And we will just get that problem solved in the long run if people begin to research on alternatives and when they are there and they are equal to plastic, politics need to make sure financially that it's wiser to use the non-plastic alternative.
I also liked that the alternative bags are addressed in the video: They are not that "good shit" which everyone wants to tell you and their materials have their own downsides, in the production process and also in usage. For example cleaning them if something you bought is not completely sealed anymore, is a pain in the ass because the fabric structure holds on to "things". The Plastic Bag has a much smoother surface, water over it and it's gone. And for all that complaining about that example, think about this: Like with every product which is intended to be used for a very long time, maintenance is a factor. I say this because some people turn low-key into clerics if you "dare" to complain about the plastic alternatives.
My opinion is that not plastic is the problem, people are the problem.
Im a doing polymer science bachelor studies atm, so i do know my fair share about plastics. And let me tell u, plastics are just a scape goat for Humans. We dont want to be the bad guy so we blame materials etc... Plastics itself arent bad, as long as they are used proplerly and using them is still our Job. But sadly we simply dont use them properly, especially when it comes to recycling.
We need to start taking care of our planet , our planet can live without us , but we can’t live without it 🤔

I remembered seeing one research in one of my classes saying that for as simple reusable cotton bag you need to use them 100 to 200 times to make it be worth it comparing to a plastic bag in terms of CO2. I guess it depends on what time of reusable bag and what environmental impact you are looking at

We're apart of this too, many of my peers litter without thinking of the consequence and they are also 15. Plastic is beneficial but it's important that we take the proper action and care. If everyone did their part, we wouldn't be having such a huge problem; however, it's our responsibility to get the change we need and want to see.

Our parents said the same to their parents. We said the same to our parents. Your kids will say the same to you. Young people always think they know what's wrong with the world and are VERY susceptible to the scary half of a story as you demonstrate here. Notice midway through they explained that simply banning the plastics would make things worse. There is no magic solution someone can just apply and fix everything. If there were, someone would have made a lot of money off of it and put it into place already. We're working on biodegradeable replacements, filters, recycling, and numerous other ways of addressing this, but crying "the old people are ruining the world" is just barely a step up from crying that you didn't get a second candy bar...wrapped in plastic.
What I always found interesting about this is that the materials to make plastic come from nature, so in a sense, just rearranging and changing the way these substances exist in our environment can have a massive impact. Chemistry is cool.
