Not going to lie, you need to keep up this army diary type content. Definitely some of the best videos you've put out for a while. Especially seeing each completed unit with the rest at the end!
Couldn’t agree more! I would really love to see the rest of these models painted up in this style. I’ve gone back and watched them three times each lol
@dlockwo2 I've done the exact same thing! Rewatching I mean, I wish more content creators would make army diary series about armies they're passionate about, far too many "speed painting an army" not enough quality series. The only reason I commented is because I get vibes from this video that Jon's putting this series on the side line
Tbh I think attempting to match the effort level on models among your army is something only people with a lot of armies do. Some of us have 1 big army, and it’s just a reality that over time as we get better at painting, the latest models will look better. And there’s no way in hell I’m gonna slack on a model to make it look as bad as the old ones!
What Western show was he on before he made the shift to advertisements? EDIT: It’s Anthony Wilford Brimley, who in addition to his acting career, was well known for his work in Quaker Oats ads and for advocating for diabetics in his ads with Liberty Medical Supply. He first showed up on the big screen in an uncredited role in “True Grit.” His final role was also uncredited when appeared posthumously in an episode of “Yellowstone.” If you want to find the t-shirt you can just look up the text: DIABEETUS I Got The Sugars!
@@El-syf A reverse image search revealed the text on the shirt to be: DIABEETUS I GOT THE SUGARS! I hope that helps. I had a longer reply but a bot deleted it for some reason.
I think this series is genius! Showing a great but still possible approach to army painting by a golden demon winner, while improving the techniques you need for those award winning projects
Jon, as a fellow artist and Type 1 Diabetic, I just gotta say thank you. I haven’t played or painted any Warhammer before, but I just love your tutorials. They’ve helped me become a much better, more confident artist, and I appreciate it. That T-shirt is awesome and I need one.
I might be a little neater and more precise when it comes to painting special models, but I generally don’t feel the need to add extra techniques or different color schemes because, at least with Warhammer/AoS models, they already come with additional details and decoration that are gonna make them stand out. Great video tho, lots of awesome tips…
Please do more of your Skaven army in the future even though the initial hype fades, definitely a lot of stuff from these videos I'm incorporating into my own army
It would be fantastic (if you haven’t done it already) to see a guide on how you go about painting without washes. Just the basics of blending, shadows, etc.
Gotta be honest, Vince's natural, painterly highlights and sick armor look so distinct. I'm not sure, just going off images, that you've got him beat for this challenge! I really enjoy his palette and easygoing artistic layers instead of the GW boxart look. Those horns of yours look sick AF though!
Jon just a heads up as a veterinarian. Be wary of the farmers dog. They formulate them under the RER (resting energy requirement) I have had to treat a dog in a cachexic state because of that food and now the do. Most of their advertising is just spin marketing about human grade this and that. Which isn’t actually a thing. That food can go for hundreds of dollars a month and it’s not any better than other dog food, they are built in just trying to make you feel bad.
i really enjoy watching your close up shots, i'm always learning more about blending, layering, and edge highlighting. I also really like that you use speed/contrast paints as well. I'm a terrible lazy amateur but your videos encourage me to add a few extra steps to make things just a bit better
Crazy how much you've improved in a year Jon, makes me wanna really push myself back into it, had an Elrond on my desk for a year only done some of the horse. Two emperors champions got rage binned. Thanks for the inspo
I am always amazed at how far you've come with your painting skills. You're reaching Marco Frisoni level. I've watched you for a long time, and your progression has been amazing.
As you know Jon, I don't collect GW models. Etsy busts and models are my jam. But I always enjoy watching your videos. I'm still not sold on contrast paints either.
I love that you're wearing a shirt featuring The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Golden Mouth Organ Winner Wilford Brimley. Your daughter has excellent taste.
My hero rule is, I am allowed the same amount of time it takes me to paint a full unit on a single hero (unless it's a huge centerpiece like Ushoran... those dont get rules lol)
With that big a good boy I'd be shilling for any and all good dog feed companies. :) I also feel for you on the picky eating doggo. My other cat was incredibly picky. When I found something she liked I literally moved the earth to get it for you. The only pet store that carried her brand stopped carrying it... So the closest place to get it next was from Germany. Of course I ordered it from there.
He turned out great, Jon. Really loving this series. I think I'd only do a couple things differently - I like my rat's hands a feet to match the flesh tone on the muzzle, 'cause it makes them look , well, more rat-like. Secondly, any self-respecting Rat wizard should have warpstone glowing eyes. I think they would stand out well against the fur and flesh.
5:57 me as a beginner - i at first think, why is he using a dark colour for prominent areas to then see you just save time because you highlight the very top after and leave the shadow areas dark. i wish i naturally would do that
You have enough rats to play Mordheim now. Or use them as Battle Pig proxies for Relicblade. I gave up on army painting a long time ago when I had the same realization as you: it's more fun painting an individual hero than a whole unit. I only do skirmish games now.
OMG the bar scene at the beginning is the stadium of my local team!!!! 😮 Bristol Bears Rugby Club in the UK! (Shared with Bristol City Football Club, but we’ll forget about them! 😂)
I am terrified of Commander Dante. I’m mostly using contrast with some highlights and doing traditional layering on the helmets in my force, but he’s 100% head to toe metallic. I don’t think I can pull off NMM and don’t know how to make him not stand out in a bad way
If NMM is too difficult, that’s ok. Personally, I’d do a simple metallic paint job. Three layers minimum: black base coat, copper, gold highlights. Works for my Sisters, looks good on my Celestine. Is it showstopping? No, but it still looks really good for such a simple paint job.
Could you at some point do video about some tracks to 'update' your scheme. What I mean is, let's say you want to continue a collection but you've painted those mini's quite some time ago. They look good enough that they don't need a repaint but let's say the color you used are OoP or you want to try some different techniques. Case in point, I started my Skaven army at the tail end of WhFB 7th edition. I painted 40 clanrats but over the years I've learnt some things that speed up painting and makes them look better. How can I still ensure a cohesive whole? Would love tips on how best to approach that
the golden demon run seems to have really paid off for you in more ways than one. That model's paint job quality is much higher for the same level of effort than prior to your GD attempts. Maybe that's a good lesson in it's own right. Just work up some competition pieces every once in a while and you get better at everything

Totally agree. Brilliant and inspiring going to use the shadow tones
“The trick to doing hero models correctly, is to paint them in the same style.”

Rat looks awesome! The Skaven models have made me want to paint my first Warhammer model.
Adding contrast paint to knock out the fiddly bits after concentrating so hard on “regular” painting always feels so damn good lol.
How is it that a Ninjon video about the biggest rats in the army doesn’t get a R.O.U.S.’s mention in it? Inconceivable!
