I was a through-and-through Japanese car guy my whole driving life. I've owned a 1973 Datsun 240Z for the past 30 years, and all my daily drivers have been Japanese. As a teenager in the 80's, American cars were the epitome of lazy engineering that just couldn't compete with the Japanese. But when I recently had the means to buy another fun car, I ended up with a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE, and I couldn't be happier. The performance for dollar value is leaps and bounds better than anything the Japanese offer, and not just straight line performance. The 1LE is one of the best handling cars our there. And it does all this with a level of sophistication that I'd never expect from a car at this price point... magnetic ride suspension, electronics limited slip differential, rev matching, 5 levels of performance traction control, Android Auto/Apple Carplay, etc. Plus, as an added bonus, at 6'7" tall, I can actually fit in it with a helmet on! So, when the Supra came out at ~$10,000 more and yet was slower, had less room (ironic that I can fit in my nearly 50 year old 240Z but not this), and fewer features, I had zero regrets about not waiting.
@ Nigel White Interesting to hear you describe your experience as a Japanese car guy. I have been the same for my entire adult life. Now, I am looking for a fun weekend car and I am considering a Mustang GT. I rented one on vacation and was thoroughly impressed by how far American cars have come. Like you said, performance per dollar ratio is through the roof. Additionally, a lot of the American sports cars still offer a manual option as they should. Glad you are enjoying the Camaro. I hope my Stang is just as rewarding.
So many excuses from Toyota: first the vents were removable for racing, now they are homage to the racing variant. Latest excuse: "We didnt make any money off our older sportscars", yet Toyota is still one of the most profitable car companies in the world, and they especially were in the 90s, at their sports car peak. Toyota has developed a loyal fanbase because of their reliability and leading engineering, it is what guides purchases from my generation today. If they want to sacrifice that for the near term profits/risk, that is short sighted and ultimately they will lose customers.
It's still a low production car that while can be slightly profitable the margin is extremely small. It serves more as a halo car to attack new customers or to make the brand more interesting. The video was misleading on a little detail, the engine was co-developed. We will see for reliability but I'm sure it will pass the toyota mark
@@n.d.4317 Cant use that excuse. It's not at all low production if the average BMW dealership has no less that 5 Z4s sitting out on the lot, getting rained on. The Supra has 100 percent mechanical parts commonality with everything but piston heads, ecu and switchgear. Switchgear is from the old 3 series and looks like garbage. So, no. It's a slightly different BMW. Not at all low production.
@@n.d.4317 Saying this engine was "co-developed" is like saying that I co-developed an engine with a manufacturer because I took and engine and modified a few components to suit my taste i.e. I co-developed a new engine with Toyota when I put a new cold air intake on my corolla engine.

masmcg Toyota is run by bean counters and quarterly gross profit margins. Sad really, used to be some real great engineering that came from that company.
GM has economies of scale on their side and they already make their own sports cars, neither of which are something Toyota is in a position to leverage. The C7 Corvette US sales alone match worldwide sales numbers of the FRS/BRZ/86 combined, despite being significantly more expensive. GM also already has the tooling and space to facilitate the new Corvette by converting the old one where Toyota would have to either massively expand operations (expensive and would push any vehicle with the performance envelope they were looking for beyond a reasonable price point) or axe an existing, profitable product line, to make the tooling and space available for a product that would likely be less profitable. Rather than take risks like that, Toyota chose to leverage existing manufacturers and product branding to make a sports car with the Toyota name a reality.
@@lynxis Yet Mazda, which is literally one TENTH the size of Toyota in terms of revenue, can build a dedicated sports car platform all by themselves that isn't shared with any of their other vehicles (Miata). Yes, Fiat gave them a suitcase full of money to borrow it for the 124 Spyder, but even if you make that argument, Mazda and Fiat COMBINED are still MUCH smaller than Toyota. Toyota absolutely COULD have easily afforded to build this car themselves, but they didn't have the nerve. They should be EMBARRASSED that their halo car is designed and built by BMW. It's inexcusable. That said, I'm glad the BMW Supra and Z4 exist. 14:12 If you're in Europe, you guys should check out the Alpine A110. Its a midengined sportscar priced similarly to this Supra and the 718 Cayman. It weighs 2400lbs, has an all aluminium construction including the front+rear double wishbone suspension that is intentionally set to allow pitch+roll, 205/40 front and 235/40 rear tyres. Think of it as a slightly more powerful Mazda MX-5 or Subaru BRZ. BUT, even if they've recently unveiled the more 'hardcore' A110 S model, they don't come with a manual (granted, it may be decent dual clutch transmission but it ain't PDK levels of excellent) and it uses a turbocharged 4 cylinder from a Renaultsport Megane. The build quality isn't the best either, but for the price you pay, you'll tell that they've spent most of their R&D budget on the chassis design - so many UK-based journalists have praised it and some even bought it for that matter. Dan Prosser (journo on EVO Magazine, Pistonheads, Autocar, Car Gurus UK and @drivenation_ on Instagram), Gordon Murray and James May own one. Despite it being no manual, the 2400lbs weight and its eagerness to rotate/trail-brake makes it really worthwhile to test it out. It has similar power-to-weight ratio to the Supra, although we all know by now that the B58 engine has a whole lot more potential with the aftermarket than the A110's 4 cyl, even with the help of Litchfield's Stage 1 upgrade.
Except you can't actually buy one since Renault deliberately made them in homeopathic numbers to build hype. However, the Porsche Gayman might be a quality option to go for instead of this. Or just get a used one and spend the savings on fuel and track days.

I remember one person in a video bent his control arm when this car a few month back.

And you bought one before they uglified the nose! 😁

Not at all low production.
yeah they literally invented lean manufacturing.
@@n.d.4317 Saying this engine was "co-developed" is like saying that I co-developed an engine with a manufacturer because I took and engine and modified a few components to suit my taste i.e. I co-developed a new engine with Toyota when I put a new cold air intake on my corolla engine.

Toyota: This is the only way to make it affordable.
GM: Hold my beer....... we built the entire car. behold the 2020 Corvette.
masmcg Toyota is run by bean counters and quarterly gross profit margins. Sad really, used to be some real great engineering that came from that company.
Toyota: We meant affordable, reliable AND good.
GM: Erm............. can I have my beer back now?
@@Nemoticon reliable with a BMW engine? We will see about that.
I still won't consider buying one until they've been out long enough to have a proven good reliability record (which I'm VERY skeptical of, because... Pretty much every sports car has engine noise piped into the cabin anymore, and it's only gonna get more prevalent. I really don't get how $60K is a ridiculous price tag. You're getting a car that's, for the 2021 model year, making about 440bhp, last year's model was 1 second off of the M4's time at VIR and faster than the M2, it's got a version of iDrive that's better than the newest version, and it's more comfortable enough to live with everyday than any of the American sports cars.
Love that car. Harry Metcalfe, Jay Emm on Cars and Dan Trent posted very informative videos on that car too.
Except you can't actually buy one since Renault deliberately made them in homeopathic numbers to build hype.

@@Spartan117A51 yes, they made the Camry look sporty because those cars have the reputation of being 'boring (but reliable) family cruisers' but IMO it's overkill for what those cars are AND what they're supposed to be. it's like watching a person try to be someone they're not
@@c0Ld imo I think they could at least let their consumers have some fun instead of having them have to buy a $60k sports car that has maintenance costs of a POS bmw

Snilsson - Everyone seems to drive that way nowadays. I get it if someone up ahead is really dragging ass, but sorry, I’m not going 50 in a 30.
I'm the kinda guy to do those racing swerves behind your car if you're going too slow.

@@Albus_Rex I was wondering who that was. Jerk.
That wheel well shot @3:28 is brilliant.
The thudding sound you are complaining about is called the Helmholtz effect. Vortices spin off the A-pillars and then encounter the B-pillars. A 'sharp' B-pillar will create a very defined boundary where the air is rapidly moving in or out. If the B-pillar was more rounded then the turbulent air would be split more gently.
You are correct, it is highly annoying, enough so that I didn't buy a GTI because of it.
No manual gearbox......No thanks!
