    This is low key such a great recommendation. I wish this was more well known.
    I especially like the StudioLive series because I can get analog sound (eq and compression) on the way in with effectively no latency and hella inputs

And based on that one minute (though I'm deciding on spending a lot on a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre because I could then add channels to it via ADAT and have a simple, high-quality performance option too) I've subscribed.     I am happy I found this channel! Authentic and informative. I do not get some of the commenters are so 'offended' 🤗 It is just opinions and sharing thoughts on audio. What fits you good is good! I am on a PC and never knew apple is going that way. Flexibilty of Cat5 is such a great oportunity when I am mixing FOH and all techs coming to the venue I am house engineering. It is so fast and flexible. ADAT is good, if you are not chaining too much stuff. I am expanding my ID14 with the new ultragain in my home and for rehearsal room recordings. That is super okay. Bjt I get the point that it is annoying when running your studio network. Great video!

      I want more inputs in my electronic music studio - currently 16 (8 x 2) using USB and ADAT! Is this sort of kit possible? Using a Windows 10 PC.

      @@awpMusic1 I have 40 plus synths and use RME digiface interface into cheapo ADAT A/D converters, Behringer ADA8200 etc. Gives me 32 channels of line in for the synths and all accessible in my DAW. Latency is good at 48k (256 samples = 5 sec input and 5 sec output). I like the stageboxes shown in this video but wonder what the latency is on windows PC say using a Klarke Technic CAt5 to USB

    I can definitely confirm this. I came from the same setup with two 24 i/o boxes, a console, and Cubase. I hesitantly sold off my room and bought a Studiolive 32s and Studio One. Holy sh@ this thing is awesome! No random noises to search out, no automation screwing with outboard compression, and beautiful beautiful RECALL! The DAW mode and integration with Studio makes it just like mixing analog, but easier. My biggest hesitation was leaving Cubase, but I feel right at home with Studio One. It actually makes sense considering the two people who created Studio One used to work for Steinburg. 🤘🏻

    I've been using Soundcraft's Ui24R for three years now and I can't recommend it enough: excellent live mixer with 22 physical inputs and 10 outputs;, 32 x 32 USB interface with 24 channel multi-track recording and playback on the desk, as well as being an HTML5 web server, which means there's no app. It is completely agnostic to platform: phones, tablets, laptops, it doesn't care what controls it.
    AND IT SOUNDS AWESOME!!

      Likewise! I’ve had mine for about the same time. Recently went browsing for something better to replace it. There’s nothing out there which does everything the Ui24r does. A&H QuSB comes close but is iPad only.

      Same here.
      I like that it records straight to a USB drive and/or a computer.
      Recording redundancy is one of the reasons that I bought it. Another reason is the ability to control it on a web browser page that anyone can access, rather than an app.

      I've been using the little brother, the Ui16, for 3 years or better for our church. It's doing just fine, it sounds good, it's flexible enough to run FOH and a secondary aux master stereo to feed into my Studio One DAW to process my Livestream. The USB record and playback slots are nice as well. One big bonus for live sound is these have dbx AFS² feedback suppression built-in.
      Biggest drawback? I've run out of inputs. So to remedy it I might go up to the Ui24 or better yet go with Presonus StudioLive 24R, and mix on Studio One and/or their UC Control surface.

    Yes, it’s fantastic! I went with the Behringer X-32 desk because at the time, the Presonus digital consoles had a shut-off problem, so X-32 it was...and I don’t regret it. The X-32 is situated on my left side and is connected via cat-5 to a router, my Mac to the router as well for X-Edit which can completely control my X-32 from my Mac (and is showing on an external monitor at all time). Another Cat-5 from the router to my X-Touch controlling the X-32 faders, pans and such on top of controlling my DAW (Logic X) right in front of me in a small form factor! It’s fantastic! Next purchase is indeed the digital stage box!

    I’m a FOH engineer I could tell you that my dream studio rig would be an SSL L200 console with a pair of remote I/O boxes. I used the L series for live events for over 4 years, mixing Foh, monitors, and A/V and to be honest live gear is superior nowadays! The job gets done, your sound is amazing and musicians are happy and inspired.
    I am currently planning out a studio running of a Yamaha TF5 console paired with a couple Tio Boxes all because I just got tired of Apple upgrading their hardware and my audio gear becomes obsolete. You have a good point there!

      Yes! We’ve been using a live desk for tracking for years, and more studio people need to look to live world for better workflow AND better sound quality now!

      In my job, which is to compose music and make audio post for documentaries, they think to buy me a yamaha TF1, I'm close to saying no, to buy by my own limited means a specialized AD-DA card like the LYNX AuroraN, or focusrite Rednet 16 T. The question I ask everyone, since I don't have a way to test both devices, will there be such a difference in audio quality, to record, mix or master? The thing is that sound quality is quality of life for me.

    The situation you described with the motu cards was the inspiration for my fifth Hackintosh dubbed Mr Black. The hack was the main studio computer for a few years until we afforded an Apollo interface, and a Mac pro tower! It even hosted old pci HD Cards for a spell, i totally forgot about the motu pci cards! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

    The best thing is that the ”stagebox” is actually a complete rack mixer, so via the app it actually makes the mixer on the desk an optional addition for the feel of having physical buttons and faders. But for studios on a budget they can just skip the console mixer, and just have the ”stagebox” as a stand alone mixer.

    Glad we have the Studiolive Series III SX32 and 16r when our church upgraded from analog to digital. Didn't regret it. In fact everyone loved it! Felt like we brought a studio into church, haha! Our drums are semi-caged and use the mics to run and blend with Slate Trigger, our guitars and bass on vst guitar plugins, vocals with iZtope Nectar + Melodyne ARA2! The Capture App bundle is fantastic along-side running the free OBS Studio for streaming or just purely recording the cameras. The stage is clean and amp-less. I run fx and processing combining both the power of the DAW & plugins and the in-built channel strip of this board. Really taking advantage of the remote control. You can indeed do a lot with our present "Live" equipment when you bring it into the studio. It's a match made in heaven!
    Ps. Even without internet, as long as you're connected to the router via Cat6/WiFi, it'll work. We bought our model last July, 2021. And to other viewers who are curious about the remote control app that musicians use that he mentioned in the vid, they're Aux sends. Their personal mixes will not interfere nor affect the main mix in the control room. It's just plainly a monitor signal feed where you have full control like adding "more ME"! Happy mixing everybody and cheers to the amazing vid!

      @@eterna2k7 Wrong person, but I just use an ART Syncgen. I used to use a BLA micro clock mkii, but it just died on me and I didn't want to spend the money. The ART clock has been working great since. 👍

    I use a 8 input Zoom R24 (16 when I link my 2 recorders together) and it works great for live recording. I love this recorder, it has a sampler a mini drum machine and much more.

    Love ADAT! 24 channels direct to desk in and out with RME HDSP on PCI at 3ms, 48khz. Absolutely no issues in over 10 years. Mind you I'm not running a hugely overpriced Apple box! Just a fast i7 window box. Kerrrching!!

      @@G_handle Spirit Digital 328 by Soundcraft. Quite underrated and functionally ahead of it's time, albeit pretty dated now. I think the Behringer X32 is modeled on it with some obvious modern upgrades. It's been my console, hub/converter for the RME and controller for Cubase for a good 10 years now.

      I have so many thoughts right now.
      First, I still have and still love my 32-channel Soundcraft Ghost.
      Your Spirit Digital always intrigued me, though I never got my hands on one, and had nearly forgotten about it.
      It triggers one of my reactions to this, pretty ridiculous video though...
      Your board, if I'm not mistaken, has in addition to the Alesis lightpipe I/O, Tascam's answer to 8-channel Digital in the form of DB-25s.
      The DA-88s had that TDIF?, and the ADATs had Lightpipe. That Soundcraft has both.
      My point being that, my reaction to his hatred of ADAT still being around, is look at it the other way. That DIGITAL format, has lasted since the 90s. What other digital anything is still being manufactured on brand new equipment today.
      I was excited that the new Universal Audio Apollo x4, not only has ADAT in, like my Twins do, but also ADAT Out, which makes that a powerful little box for $1700 if you then add a $300 Behringer ADA8200 giving you 8 mediocre Mic Pres if you need em, but more importantly 8 line level Cirrus Logic A/Ds and 8 D/As, in addition to the 4-Unison Pres or Line-ins, 6 line-outs, +HPs from UA. Yes two grand, but that's a serious Hybrid/Hardware Inserts/Analog Stem Processing/Summing rig.
      Add to that an SSL SiX 12:2 mixer for $1500 and some Mogami to hook it all up, and Sonically you in the money for under four Gs.
      And the ADAT makes it possible!
      UA ain't gonna give you 16 more converters for $300 more bucks.
      But throwing lightpipe on the back and letting it flow through the thunderbolt costs hardly anything extra.
      Anyway, it's also ironic that he's praising Live World for being ahead of the curve, when it was live world and boards like yours, and the omnipresent O2Rs that hooked into RME interfaces in the first place.
      He said something like, " ..."it can only do 4 channels at 96k for some reason ". Yeah, bandwidth!
      Since SMUX, your ADAT has been able to do 8-channels at 1x (44.1/48k), 4-channels at 2x (88.2/96k), and 2-channels at 4x (176.4 I guess, never seen that, but 192k). AND those fiber optics can run 2-channels of SPDIF, at great distances.
      I've been using this format for decades now, with not a single problem I can remember.
      It took some dude on TH-cam, talking smack like a Gear Slut with a camera, to make me stop and appreciate the exact opposite of whatever the hell he thought he was saying.
      Whilst the ADAT machines have all rightly gone to e-waste, the ADAT format has served us well. And well into the third decade of the twenty-first century.

    I love our band's Soundcraft Ui24R. We're a 10 piece band (just about clinging on in these times). I was hesitant at first not having physical sliders and knobs but it's a great unit that can double as an audio interface for £600 for 22 physical mic inputs and 8 physical outputs.
    Great for a small studio, two can be daisy chained and it can record to usb stick simultaneously.
    Wondering when we'll get to use it again...

      Nikolaki, I have the UI-16. How are you guys connecting your stage box to the computer. I tried the cat-5 cable but windows 10 or my DAW (Reaper) doesn't recognize it. The UI-16 doesn't multi-track record on the usb, only a stereo track but I thought I might get lucky with the cat-5. I can't find any info on this topic, any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks!

      @@HenryC7625Sadly the Ui16 only gives out a stereo feed as a USB audio interface. I think the Ui24r is the only model in that series to offer multitrack + stereo to USB. The cat5 connection is only used to access the web interface and in the case of Ui24r also allows two units to be cascaded.

      I had one of those, it's a great thing and cheap for what it does. I changed to the Studiolive S3 and I'm much happier with physical, moving faders.

    The examples in the intro where funny but kinda logical for sounds at the same time, I've never came across examples for this exact purpose.

    A very good video in general. I'd like more background on why you don't like the ADAT standard. I can think of some limitations regarding shorter cable lengths (relative to ethernet type solutions) unless you use ADAT extenders which also use ethernet. You lose half the input if you record at 96k with SMUX (not necessary but some insist on it) . Other than that it has served me very well. I've been using RME interfaces for decades now with very low latency at 32 samples. Very straight forward and reliable for me.
    The integrated live solution makes a lot of sense. You could almost pay for this outright by the money you save in long cable runs.

      @Chad Gillihan Yeah, a friend of mine (who has a steadier hand than I) and myself ripped it apart and replaced the stock power caps with Nichicon Golds with much beter ESR rating, giving the opamps and converters a more steady power supply. It definitely opened up the highs and when we compared it to his shiny new cranborne 500 series converter, MOTU sounded smoother and more natural. Definitely recommend the mod at least for peace of mind, but one warning: make sure the caps are the same height, mine aren't and the lid can't close (which doesn't matter as it sits free in a loose top rack space on a patch bay.

    So, had exactly the same situation...old mac tower...motu 24 I/O...just got a mac mini M1 and in the process of getting the Presonus 24R. Thanks for putting in the leg work and giving me the confidence/putting my mind a rest. :)

      RME Don’t play around! They can get better latency via USB2.0 than other interfaces using Thunderbolt! Love RME equipment, it is simply superb and yes, ADAT is rock solid on their hardware!

    I recently bought the Soundcraft Signature 22mtk which gives me 24 in and 22 out. Comes with legendary ghost preamps and 2 x lexicon fx engines plus loads of other goodies. For a band or studio on a budget you won’t find better for under £600. Plus for live use it comes with my favourite button that mutes all channels except the last stereo channel 21/22 so you can play background music. It’s just full of little tricks that make sense in the real world. Check it out.

      I have one (and a 16 ch) love it except they seem to have forgotten to store the efx settings so when you power down you'll have to reset any of those from scratch. Unless I’m missing something (??) but I spoke with them or other tech support and apparently it was overlooked. It's inexpensive so no analog direct outs (or inserts if I recall, it's been mothballed since COVID) and one channel seems to have crapped out)

      MY Soundcraft 22mk Crapped out on me after less than a year, the company I called , they didnt give a toss really, I reckon its a good idea but poorly executed, probably cheap circuits, channels stopped working, one every 2 weeks....pain...why do they always promise so much then they are made so poorly.

    Great video. I have a Studiolive 32ai and a Yamaha TF-Rack. Eventually I settled on the TF as my main mixer because it takes up less space on my desk and a Dante network is easier to manage than AVB if you're using nodes from different companies. I also just don't like big consoles.

    Wow, this is such a logical setup. I wonder if you could set up a Dolby Atmos surround set-up via the 24R since the output count wouldn't be an issue. But no idea how the Dolby matrixes are set up

      You certainly could - if you’re mixing music for Dolby Atmos then the final render can be done in software, so you could use the 24R for multichannel monitoring. Both ProTools and Steinberg Nuendo offer support for Atmos built in. For cinema release you need to be certified, and there is dedicated hardware the render has to be mastered to.

    I have pretty much the same set up with the 24R, just I have the 24 channel desk, rather than the 32. I also added some of the MOTU AVB interfaces (24Ai and 16A), plus some extra i/o chained off those using *(whispers)* ADAT ! All in, I have 128 inputs and 64 outputs available simultaneously and it all goes through a single Thunderbolt cable from the 16A into the Mac! The MOTUs and the Presonus kit play together pretty well over AVB, you just need an AVB router if you have more than 2 AVB devices. The 24R is great value for money and you can build from there really easily if you need to.

    While I do agree that live solutions have a nice workflow for cheap, but analog signal path on most of these things suck. To achieve high studio quality you’ll definitely need external preamps, compressors, etc. now if you want a similar experience you can go for antelope audio, which sells 32 quality interfaces, though i hear they have issues. The reason why Apollos are so expensive is because they are MORE than JUST an interface. They have some of the best plugins on the market along with some of the best a/d conversion and some of the cleanest analog pres, which can then be modeled after top of the line hardware. If you don’t need mic pres (since you’ll probably wanna replace those on the presonus anyway and you mentioned using a 24 i/o from MOTU previously), you can grab 2 of the 16 i/o version.
    That being said the live world has always had great tools for the studio. I started with a Mackie mixer with stereo outputs into an interface so i could have more mic pres. I would down mix the drums from the mixer and record stereo for drums. Now the latest versions of those mixers have multi track outs via USB or AVB. What I’ve found though is that the drivers/built in mixer and such isn’t as good or stable as others. though in the live sound world presonus is probably the best deal. But it ISN’T STUDIO GRADE. so maybe starting out to accomplish goals it’s good, but long term you’re gonna wanna replace it.
    The feature of having artists use an ipad to mix their headphone mixes is an incredible idea! Did you know most DAWs have their own iPad app? with pro tools they can do their own headphone mixes, just setup a bunch of aux tracks and let them play with the sends, or create a few buses that send to the outputs they’ll be listening to and only show them their tracks.
    As someone who live streams for the last 2+ years it’s become a hybrid of a live setup and a studio setup. I use studio grade interfaces (Apollo/audient), but I have friends who use live mixers and interfaces. The mixer is often used for easy hands on control of the stream and the interface for sound quality. Often using the interface’s superior conversion or preamps.
    Anyway i appreciate that videos like this exist, so many people don’t realize how powerful the live world can be in the studio (especially AVB and Dante setups).

      I’m a huge RME fan also. fireface 800 (10years) never once given me a glitch... Babyface (usb) never had a glitch either. Great support, great low latency drivers, (even on a pc- I’m on Mac now!).great company.

What would you advise to me? I'd never tried firewire audio before, and want a super stable setup, and don't waste my money of course.

      FireWire is an old technology now, but I simply haven’t had any need at all to upgrade. Latency has been low.
      Thunderbolt is the way to go for modern appliances but at a substantial cost.

    I moved from a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 and OctoPre Dynamic II to a Midas M32R and DL153 Stagebox.
    Definitely the way forward, especially concerning monitor mixes with reverb, compression, EQ etc! M32 also has SD card and USB recording.
    If you want 96Khz, I'd recommend the DiGiCo or Allen & Heath route.
    My next desk will be the compact version of the Behringer Wing if it's ever announced or the Heritage-Air (touchscreen version of Heritage-D) if it's cheap enough!

      Had a quick look around, and seems like it probably works, but basically has been superseded by other connection protocols and physical connectors by now. These newer ones will support more channels and higher sample rates over a single cable, eg. the cat-5 (computer LAN cable) that the presenter Mark is talking about in the video. LAN cables are also dirt cheap and easily available.

MADI is better but was never adopted to the same degree, is still a a very expensive solution (which pretty much only RME still uses) and it also uses the same fragile optical cables most of the time.

    Mark is totally right this Presonus Studio Live 3 ecosystem is very clever and great sounding and comes in different sizes and budgets. I took the 64s model after tried a lot of things more expensive and not so powerful (Large format analog console, Avid Control 24, Euphonix MC Control, Avid s3, Steven Slate Raven MTx, Mti, Ssl Nucleus 2...)
    Now I'm totally happy with my studio live, it's a bargain when you know all the features, and they are a lot more in this video he just had the time to scratch the surface, and it's evolving now you can even plugin Dante devices! Now that I sold my Neve 8816 line summing mixer, the next step is to add a dangerous Mix Bus summing amplifier and for that, they have stage boxes in 8 or 16 channels that you just connect with cat 5, they thought about everything and in case of an issue the support, tech is fast and awesome...

    I'm curious to know why you don't like ADAT actually.
    I'm personally looking into ADAT expansion with and RME PCIe ADAT card and a couple of Clarett OctoPres (or maybe similar Audient ones, haven't decided yet), because it seems quite easy and more customisable. I'm also on Windows so I don't have the issue of not having PCIe slots (or having to spend lots of money to get PCIe slots).
    So yeah, I'm curious why you don't like ADAT?

      My personal opinion, more moving parts/wires gives more points for failure. Sometimes I travel record events on the fly. Id hate to lose half of my inputs because of a loose cable lol. One big piece of hardware seems more secure to me

I wish MOTU would update their AVB interfaces to thunderbolt 3. So many interfaces on the market and so few networked options and Dante$ and Digigrid$ are expensive

      They’re great - they take a super quiet mic signal and make it louder, with no noticeable noise or distortion and plenty of gain. We’ve recorded probably hundreds of bands with them, both in the studio and live, and I have no complaints at all.

    So I watched this video last April and recently bought the cheapest 'live world' offering - Behringer. Yes, I know... Behringer. But their X18 or XR18 offer 18 tracks in and out of a laptop for £400. If you hate Behringer you can buy the Midas M18 for around a £100 more. It's exactly the same product but it hasn't got Behringer written on it.

I have a question though - what is the problem with adat - I myself expand my apollo via adat to be able to record with 10 inputs (im more of the producing type recorder not really recroding full bands live etc.) and I had no issues at all so far. What exactly is your problem with adat?

      Clocking issues, the fact that you lose half your channels if you need to work at higher sample rates for some silly reason, and the fact that if you’re tracking bands, you need at least two 8-channel ADAT expanders on most interfaces, and then it’s double trouble. Also, I’m biased as I had to work on the ADAT machines in the 90s, and that wasn’t fun. At all. I’d like to see more daisy chain-able USB C interfaces - plug one in for 8 channels, plug another one into that for 16, another into that one for 24 etc.

    Great video as always. A humble suggestion for the fewer-input interface comparison video you mention: The Zoom F6. I've used the Apogee Ensemble, a number of Behringer units, the Motu M4, and most recently the Presonus Quantum 2626. The Zoom beats them all IMHO. Internal recording, 32-bit float, versatile routing options, plus it works as a standalone unit or an interface. Perfect for audio AND video production. I'd love to hear/see your thoughts on it. You'll probably teach me a few things I don't know about it too boot! Cheers.

    You can now get thunderbolt 3 to PCI-E slot boxes, they are absurdly expensive for what they are. I'm running a 3 slot one for Video SDI I/O for a presentation machine. I'm surprised there's no market for audio I/O in a similar config.
    EDIT: I have also seen a few people use Allen & Heath QU series, for I/O just like your presonus.
    At least the Mac network card supports AVB natively.

      @@MarcassCarcass Companies are still releasing new gear with ADAT that works with stuff released over 2 decades ago with ADAT. I'm using MOTU 828 mkiis with brand new RME gear and it all talks together and plays nicely.
      If you're using Windows, it's the best game in town for pulling in large numbers of analog inputs without blowing a fortune.

      Same here. As a live audio engineer getting into streaming artists on IG etc, having an ADAT equipped interface I can transport easily in my back-pack and link back at the studio to my older soundcard I put in stand-alone makes a lot of sense. Most bands don't need more than 10-12 inputs at a time; my MOTU ultralite have up to 18 with ADAT and Toslink connections. Why the hate on ADAT? I don't get it. Yes it's an older protocol but it's still relevant for many people. It's stable. Many home studio owners have an ADAT equipped interface : there is a reason why Audient and MOTU still release interfaces with it.

    Been installing the range of Allen&Heath SQ or QU in studios for about 8 years now. First people are like but this is a live mixer? Yes but look at the flexibility you get… all the headphone mixes, the Daw control, mix or remote record from any position. Yes personally I still have my ISAs on front of this but 99% of musicians cannot hear the sound difference… it is way more about room, how loud is the backing or more me, how much food and coffee everyone has had than an boutique system that is way too complex! Live world is miles ahead on cost performance. Great video!

      @@agesonjohanesburg2915 Thats a good point. I would assume the Gain is preset, so the only control you have is through your daw. I’m not sure at all about Phantom power. Maybe it’s already got 48v running too? Just don’t plug in a ribbon mic 😂
