There’s a lot of debate and opinions on what Begbies style is and I think that it goes to the point I made about how Rachael Flemming took multiple influences and blended them together. I’ve never seen her explicitly say what she was influenced by for his style but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was a combination of Mod, Casual hooligan, and who knows maybe even Ivy! Or maybe there’s just an overlap between Ivy and the other subcultures. I never said she was influenced by Ivy, only that he gave off an Ivy aesthetic. Hope that clears everything up! I’m glad so many are enjoying the video! Let me know what you want to see next!

Good video but pretty dissapointed about your section on Begbie. Hes pretty obviously wearing 1980s Football hooligan (Casual subculture) fashion, pringle jumpers, fred perry stuff etc. were all worn by members of the Casual subculture in the UK. Casuals were influenced by the previous Mod and Skinhead subcultures who were in turn heavily influenced by Ivy League stuff. Penny loafers are a big part of both Mod and SKinhead fashion too. These fashion choices paired with how psychopathically violent Begbie is definitely points to him being a Football Casual imo. Football and Football hooliganism are also a giant part of the book of Trainspotting and still has some significance in the film a syou pointed out with Renton wearing all the Adidas stuff.

      1) Football casuals coexisted with bootboys and late mods, but they took inspiration directly from american preppy and ivy league, and from italian luxury sportswear and middle class aesthetics. The casuals style was, in fact, designed to differ from the skinhead aesthetics to avoid police attention. What is most important to understand, casuals were in line with the general middle class "cool" youth of that time. They had very few unique style rules, like "any sneaker should be plain white, except Adidas". But mostly, it was just the general style of the era. 90s changed it a little bit, but still, even 90s brands like Stone Island or C.P. Company were worn by middle class and street gangsters of the time and were not associated with subculture. Now, the subculture is present in movies and has some reputation, preserved like a time capsule, and the "basic" british rich youth is forgotten.
      2) Begbie was dressing middle class, at the same time, knowing that his particular brands are respected on the street. Begbie was not a casual, but more of a gangster and a descendant from a scottish minor crime family. Both his father and grandfather did a lot of time for some Leith port contrabanda, robberies or burglaries. The story of old married Begbie and his conflict with the past is masterfully explored in "The Blade Artist", where he is the main character.
      3) I don't remember much of a casual theme in Trainspotting. I read it long ago, so I may be mistaken. Irwine Welsh did describe some actual football casuals in "Glue". Rab Birrel, a brother of one of main characters, was a football casual. He was forced to put on a team jersey presented by his parents and attend a match wearing it. There was a lot of comedic elements, as some characters congratulated him for stopping being a casual and becoming more mature, some mocked him, etc. Juice Terry also hung out with casuals during the novel. So Welsh was familliar with the topic.

the characters' wardrobes also played around with subcultures a lot. elements of punk/skinhead/indie/mod/glam and especially 'casual' (begbie). i don't see (*1950s*) teddy boy looks so much, but casual and mod fashions were influenced directly by the 50s/60s ivy league look.

I think I'm the only Easterner here in the comments section. Here we go. In the post-Soviet space, Trainspotting acquired a kind of cult status and had a huge impact on the very emergence of most subcultures. Basically, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, we had nothing orthodox. All Western subcultures appeared simultaneously and anachronistically, which was hilarious. Ravers, skinheads, rappers, Goths and New Agers happened to be in the same room at the same time, which often led to the most brutal and absurd acts of violence I have ever seen. However, it was shamefully superficial. In the late 90s and early 00s, a huge wave of countercultural unprecedented and unheard-of Western literature hit the youth with the force of a nuclear missile. All the works by Irvine Welsh, Chuck Palahniuk, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac were printed on the same crappy yellowish toilet paper and wrapped in the same glossy orange paperback. We were literally addicted to that. I grew up on this literature, which influenced my taste, worldview and, unfortunately, lifestyle. However, I think it's my favourite film. Its gritty, gloomy atmosphere, surreal but grounded plot, dark humour and catchy characters touch me very deeply and personally. It aged quite well
and still reflects our society from various angles.

Personally i'm a big fan of Begbie's and Renton's style. Not a big fan of skinny pants but Mark rocks it so hard and i'm a huge fan of the distressing of the mayority of the pieces he uses. I also find interesting that when he arrives in London he stops using many of those distressed pieces and starts rocking that Denim jacket that the two guys who didn't consume heroin before (tommy and begbie) sort of showing how he wants to straight himself out. One of my favorite movies and it also has some of my favorite fits and inspo.

Hi 👋 Greetings from New Zealand. Im 64 in age , and was into Punk, and Ska music in the late 1970s. I dressed up in those days with a spiky dyed hair style. Doctor Martens were popular for footwear then. I dressed mod in the early 1980s. Peg leg narrow black trousers , and I had a pair of vintage boots from 1967. I still kept my hair spiky. Today i sometimes will dress in a 1960s style with narrow trousers and polo shirts and top it off with a trilby hat. I pin badges to my jackets. I wear sixties type sunglasses. Just occasionally I like to dress differently. People look at me in the street. I've heard comments like he's a Rock ' n ' Roller , or I look like I've stepped out of 1964. I still listen to Punk music and Ska , groups I was into back in the day are The Damned , The Specials , Bad Manners. I like the movie Trainspotting when I saw it in the 1990s. Another film I liked is Quadrophenia which came out in 1979. It was about the 1960s Mod scene. I worked for a film distribution company here in NZ then , which released the movie. Thanks for your interesting video. From Carl.

When I was 15 or 16 I was obsessed with the looks of trainspotting. I had exactly this slender physique and I was so insecure about it, then I saw those skinny guys in the movie and how their clothing even highlighted it in such a cool and punk way. I found it empowering. None of my friends understood what I saw in this grimey, druggy, cheap, eurocentric style. They listened to dave mathews band and jack johnson, do I have to say more? 🙄
I kid you not, I had to walk my ass of to find a pair of skinny jeans like renton had. This was '98 and EVERYTHING was baggy jeans and hip hop. Little did I know that skinny jeans would make a huge comeback a few years later with the rise of the hipster. Not that anybody noticed, but I had them first, thanks to trainspotting.

@@Daniel_Verhey not only in a fashion sense, the soundtrack was super influencial too. People forgot this but back then it was not THAT common that a soundtrack would be compiled of nothing but pop music. the selection on trainspotting was very thoughtful and cool, you would have the proto-punks like iggy pop and lou reed, who represent rentons ways of being a heroin-fueled dreamer, but then you would have brit-pop, hard house, even eurodance, and maybe most influencial of all, underworlds epic techno track "born slippy". music which represent his departure from punk nostalgia, finally arriving in 90s culture. I simply loved every track on this thing. Trainspotting is truly the movie of my youth in a lot of ways, so thank you for your video, very cool someone shines light on it's perfect costume design.

The creator seems to only view the clothes in this movie through the lens of modern fashion and ignores the historical subcultures these styles represent. He was close to actually dissecting the different UK subcultures represented through these characters but still missed it. For example, Begbie is very obviously styled after Casual culture, Fred Perry is not “Ivy League”.

As someone who was a teen in the mid to late nineties I remembered liking the 90’s aesthetic. I should remind you that most young people didn’t dress like this. We were mostly shallow teens into the status of name brand shoes and clothing and hideous smelling designer colognes and perfumes that they drowned themselves in. I couldn’t stand it. There were only a few of us in our high school who liked “alternative” music. I found sanctuary in living in a big city with dozens of thrift and a few retro stores. The nineties aesthetic that is so popular today with Gen Zers is in fact just an amalgamation of distinct pieces from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and even some 80s. The only uniquely recognizable trends from that era were oversized workwear, t-shirts, big leather jackets, athletic wear, and the shoes. It was less about the vintage pieces you wore but more about how you wore them.

His were white which can mean "peace" / non violence but can also (and this is what I would hazard they were going for), mean White as in white pride / white power. our boys in Trainspotting may be junkies and reprobates but they are agin the fascists, hence endearing.

I don't mean any offence by this but I am clueless as to why you would want to look like these guys? Ig it is kinda cool but like you do look distressed and not put together at all, and that's what they were going with right? Anyway great vid, please comment on this if you can answer my question

    • @Daniel_Verhey
      @Daniel_Verhey  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

No offense taken! So if you’re not a big fan of fashion you may not get it (and even if you are you still might not relate to this idea which is understandable). I think a lot of these outfits are haphazard and somewhat dingy which is the movie magic effect but a lot of the core elements are really wearable and stylish. In 2014 people were wearing skinny jeans and a bomber jacket like Renton was. Also, now more than ever this idea of mixing different styles, subcultures, and garments is really popular (especially with Gen Z) like for instance wearing baggy jeans with big bulky shoes with a white button up and tie blending both formal and casual clothes. Plus theres always been a section of people that appreciate distressed garments. In part because it looks or it is worn in and looks lived in (at least that’s my opinion). Thank you! I hope you enjoyed it and I hope this answers your question.

The bullshit concept of "normcore' didn't exist then. It was just normal clothes. People didn't parade being edgy. Even heroin addicts were above that shit...

  • @danielrose881

So odd to see someone looking at the clothing used in Trainspotting as 'style choices'... they were drug addicts and the costumes were reflective of what an addict could grab from a charity shop for pennies or steal from a high street store.
