    Actually the kid who sent the 'school is cancelled' email is kind of amazing. Because yeah, he'll probably get punished, but the kids who believe the email and stay home probably won't, they'll just get a lecture about gullibility - and a day off school. So he'll have scored a whole bunch of social credit with all the kids who stayed home and weren't punished for it.

    The whole mixed up candies in a bowl problem isn't that bad. Skittles are distinctly chubbier and a little less saturated in color compared to the m&m's. The reese's pieces have no logo, and are more disc-like whereas m&m's are almost like little flying saucers.
    Just a little guide, this works best if you only eat a few and pick them out.

    Yes.. School "fundraisers" are HUGE in America. They give the kids a booklet to bring home full of overpriced popcorn, chocolate, tupperwear, etc. And we were supposed to market it to all of our family and any other adults we could get to buy from it. In return there were "prizes" for the kids who actually sold stuff. There were tiers, in dollar amounts of what each kid sold. I was poor too, I rarely ever sold more than enough to get a pencil case or something equally shitty and also made me feel like I didn't do well enough.

    • @alyssamay9237
      @alyssamay9237 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I hated those as a kid! I only got my parents to buy like $10 worth of stuff, so I got those dumb keychain prizes. My neighbors already had kids that also went to my school, so they brought from their kids. And my closest relatives lived two hours away, so they couldn't buy. Then I'd see all the other kids getting better prizes and feel bad because I thought I wasn't as good as the other kids

    • @lindapatton4478
      @lindapatton4478 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      My mom worked at a helicopter base. She would take the little booklet to work and leave it out on her desk for a week. People would come by for something else, see it, and most of them would order one or two things. Never got one of the big prizes, but I recently came across a pencil case that has the name of the company on it that I apparently won.
      Some parents would copy the entire booklet and mail it to every one of their relatives, who would then buy at least a couple of things. Funniest thing about that, is the next birthday of those kids would roll around and those same relatives would gift the items they bought back to the kid who was selling it.
      Most of it was really cheesy knockoffs and about the only thing worth buying was the chocolate and the pecan squares.

    The school sales thing was a thing every year, at every school I went to (in the US). Some schools did a cardboard suitcase filled with candy, and others were this weird catalog that was basically "SkyMall", but orders would take like 3 months to be delivered after we submitted them. Top seller would get a cheap prize (sunglasses, a $50 gift card, whatever) for selling thousands of dollars of junk to all their parents' rich friends. Poor kids usually ended up going door-to-door, and making very few sales because they didn't have the same connections with money to burn.
    My high school stopped allowing door-to-door when I was a Junior, because a kid got abducted and was rescued 9 days later with major injuries.

    • @Max-ox5jd

      Funny how it was okay to let kids go out by themselves to knock on strangers' doors, to sell stuff, but else if parents want to let their kids out to play alone or go to school on their own suddenly it's not okay because of stranger danger hysteria and parents might get their kids taken away or land in jail.

    9:25 As someone who grew up with social anxiety in the american school system, every school I went to did this but it was more like 10 kids instead of 20. They took us out of class and had us play a bunch of "ice breaker" games to try and get us to socialize with each other. It was always incredibly awkward, incredibly forced, and didn't really help me socialize with other kids.

Where I lived when I took drivers ed that was even part of the driving course so yeah, check your laws or pay a fat fine and legal costs for damaging someones car and tires

    @8:48 Yep. There are prizes (carnival level) and they used to have you go door to door to see if anyone wanted anything (then you had to manage the money, and also had to deliver it when it got to the school.) These days most family members either just buy the over priced just, or they bring the catalogs to their work, and ask if people want anything. So it pretty much just drains parents time, money, and energy. (Schools are ridiculously under funded, so this is one of those fundraising methods. Another one is Bake sales, where kids/their parents bake stuff, and random people come to the school to buy the baked goods. Most schools have a few of these. The worst that I remember, was my HS had a cheerleader car wash, which was just super creepy.)

    Re: the school fundraiser "pyramid scheme" - oh yeah, that's totally a thing in the USA. It was an annual thing, and it really sucked for big families. Usually you would earn points based on the amount you sold, and you'd trade them in for a prize at the end. Obviously the prizes were generally not worth it - but there was always a top tier for selling like a thousand dollars worth of overpriced candy, and then you could get a bike or 90s era electronic device.

    My School Fundraiser Sales are worse than you even saw there. They gave us special stickers to put on our school planner book (so everyone could see how good/bad you were at pushing sales encouraging poor bullying) and gave us fake cash we could use to buy the school supplies our parents couldn't afford from the school bookstore, or we could buy little fuzzy friends to hang from our bags or on pencils (further displaying who the children of wealthy families were) and if you got enough of the cheap ones you could trade them in for more fancy fuzzy buddies. And we had extra School Assemblies where the people will the fanciest collection of buddies did a fashion runway walk to Eye of the Tiger and access to a special pizza party that they got out of classes to attend. NONE OF THAT SHOULD EXIST and they interlaced it all into a horrific MLM, which the school itself barely got anything (about $2500) for all our hard work and puppy dog eye guilt tripping.
