Maplestory was my first ever MMO. I played it for so many years in my childhood. I didn't even know it was the first ever f2p mmorpg. It was such an amazing game.
dungeon fighter online is still a pretty fun game, i can imagine it being massively popular in korea. super fast paced, only issue i had with it was that i could feel arthritis racking up on my fingers with the amount of button mashing and finger dexterity you need for it.
You should have used Key Mapping Software to bind on a Gamepad. The Key to using a Gamepad in DFO is binding Keys to the Analog Joysticks. You can spin the stick and dump big attacks if need be. I had a Summoner and a M. Ben.
Yup Ragnarok Online was my introduction to the MMORPG genre as well. First time I played a MMORPG, even though it was only a 2 week open Beta. I loved it, but the idea of paying per month for a game was still very foreign to me (granted we didn't had fast internet till years later, so to me online gaming was very new while the rest of the Western World was already more used to it). I loved being a Accolyte selling town portals and be what you know in WoW as the Flight Master seeing there was no fast travel :) Man I miss that in MMORPG's, people are so spoiled with conveniance that actually having players depend on each other is none excistant anymore :( Well I get it, seeing the avarage MMORPG these day's last as long as the first month, maybe 3 before the massive decline unless being one of the big names, so it would be unplayable if people need to depend on each other while there is hardly anyone around. Played a lot of beta's back then, all eastern MMO's, my first Western MMO was Star Wars Galaxies the trial version and first sub based MMO that I paid for was WoW, but I'll always think back of Ragnarok Online, it still has it's charms for me how the game looked like. Even though there was hardly anything to do then walk around killing stuff. No quests that I can remember. Dungeons were fun though, just being in the open world so people just walked in.
Very informative. Thanks Ash. I have always focused on NA based MMO. I was aware of several of the titles you spoke about but the sheer masses of people playing them surprised me. Nice video.
Really great work on this. You caught several points I didn't know. This is the type of thing I can use professionally to help catch people up on a part of the genre they may not know much about, so I really hope you do more like this.
This is awesome! Thanks for taking me back on a journey of my childhood, and back to the days of authentic and awesome MMOs! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for taking the time to make this a quality video! I wish more people would check this out, so you could continue to make great stuff like this! (Also, your Kickstarter videos rock as well!)
I still remember playing M.U., Ragnarok Online, Lineage 2 and other Korean MMORPG, they were a griiiiiiiiiiiiiind but so good, some of my best high school years memories are playing these games with my friends, and now I haven't played a Korean MMORPG for years, not sure it's the decline of Korean MMORPG or just me.
Really entertaining and interesting video! I learned a lot that I didn't know previously and would love to see you make either some deeper dives on topics you touched on here (like PC bangs and wider gaming culture in Korea) or to see this topic expanded to cover MMO/gaming culture in other markets (the West, Japan, Russia, etc). I feel like you provided a deeper look at a gaming culture most of us in your audience know nothing about, while also skimming over some really interesting topics for the sake of brevity (not a bad thing, gotta satisfy that algorithm, I know). But it's clear you researched a lot for this video, and I'd love nothing more than to learn more from that research on this topic or the aforementioned related ones. Great job!
I was playing Lineage II (interlude) while watching this video, an incredible game which stood the test of time pretty well. ArcheAge had such a big potential to become next big MMORPG, but failed due to greedy marketing and short sight of the publishers.
Excellent video, I've been playing MMOs in the UK since Legend of Mir 2 came over so its very interesting to see the bigger picture that I wasn't aware of as a kid and how it affected gaming so widely!
If there is more to the story of Jake Song or Archeage, i would love to hear more of what you have to say about it. I know these type of videos take alot of research and effort. Thank you for the content!
interesting. a glimpse into the pocket universe (south)korea. i thought it the sheer ammount in manhwa produced (my contact point^^) would be astonishing enough. happy new year kira.
As a european gamer the korean culture is one of the most fascinating to me. I really appreciate this type of "documentary" content. Since my first contact with MMOs was WoW, it would be great to hear about the history of western MMOs.
I've been watching a lot of history of MMORPG/RPG video games in general, and while a lot of series focus on Japan and the U.S., they only touch on the Korean side of things. This has been very interesting and and informative video. Thank you.
Great video ! I'm learning korean at uni and been there as an exchange student, when winter came I remember spending so much time in the pcbang in front of my uni. Great time !
Not really into eastern games but I love this kind of in depth videos. Loved the video. Great job man! Hopefully we can get more like this on different MMO-related stories/subjects?
Ragnarok online, Maplestory, FlyFF, MU online, GunZ: The Duel (one of my all time favorites), Vindictus, TERA. The memories man. Even though these weren't my favorite MMORPGs of all time (not sure if GunZ is considered an MMO lol), they were so unique and offered a lot to the genre. They're experiences I enjoyed.
Ragnarok is my first MMORPG from Korea...it was the most incredible time of my gaming life where shits was so hard where everything doesnt dumb down for players to discover, with the lack of Guides or even Community chat we only depends on guild to do almost everything. It was first of its kind...and the last, at least for me.
Very cool history, so surprising I'd never heard of Jake Sung before, despite playing many of his games. Very neat. And Ragnarok Online was my gateway drug to MMOs in highschool. And despite starting WoW near the end of my schooling (shortly after it came out), I returned to Ragnarok Online many times as a poor desperate college student, normally through private servers.
I wasn't expecting to see golden axe in this video. Great video. Being someone who lives in asia though, well, you aren't going to see the monetization change anytime soon because most people here don't really mind it.
Heard you say on another video you were disappointed this one didn't get enough recognition so I went looking to give it a watch, very glad I did. Absolutely fascinating dude, great job 🙂

Came to watch this after you’d mentioned it in a recent video-not sure how I missed it the first time! I wish it had performed better for you. I know how disappointing it is to have projects like these passed over for quick output by your audience. Whatever you produce, I’ll always watch-whether you go on to make more of these once you have financial security, or you stick with criticism of the gaming market as a whole. You’re an incredibly dedicated, intelligent, & funny person. I enjoy hearing your takes on the market (& individuals therein) just for how tuned-in & aware your commentary is. I hope more people will take the time to watch this video. It’s informative & entertaining, just as your content always is. And I appreciate the work you put into this. Wishing you success my man.
Great video! Lineage 2 was great when it launched in the west, played it from around 2004-2010. It what made me completely miss the wow train. It just looked so much better
Every Korean MMO I've played has been a second job. It's always about doing chores, every day. Sometimes you just say screw it, and go have an adventure - and then you feel bad about it because you're not doing your chores.
It's nice to see how thw gaming scene looks like in other countries. I've always been curious about China with their strict laws. Gaming looks a lot different over there.
Fantastic video from start to finish. My heart admittedly jumped when I heard Ragnarok Online. It's amazing how many people played it, and yet when I bring it up no one knows what I'm talking about. RO was a genius idea. I've been playing on official/private servers since 04 and I don't plan on stopping. I really wish we could get another mmorpg with the 2d/3d hybrid style. After seeing the beauty of games like Octopath Traveler, there's potential to create something truly gorgeous and popular (Hearing myself ramble makes me want to take up scripting and do it myself!).
Great vid! If I may suggest for a video idea, and since you've talked abit about it in here, how about a deep dive on Ragnarok Online? Its history, impact, private servers, and where it is now. I believe that there was a time when RO was the WoW equivalent for many non-English speaking countries, and I'm sure it's the first MMO that comes to mind when you ask those players (rather than WoW).
Thanks for video. I'd like to see more like this doing a deep dive into some aspect of the MMO field. I had no clue about Korean gaming in the past, so it's very interesting to learn how they were pushing the genre just as much if not more than in the west.
As you said, you should do a history of western mmorpg's next... I've been around since Meridian 59 so it should be interesting to see your take on everything.
Loved the random clips sliced in of some amazing games, like SWG even though it's not Korean developed. This type of content is very enjoyable to watch, listen, and digest. We've had a lot of amazing games that either didn't get the recognition they deserved or were ruined for whatever reason. It's too bad, but I criticize the genre, the games and their developers because I care deeply about it all. Despite being burned many times, I am hopeful for the future of MMORPGs.
Awesome video. I followed AA's development since 2009-10 and enjoyed listening to Jake Songs thoughts on the genre and what he was trying to do. Hopefully we get to hear a little more about AA2 in a this year. It sounds like he thinks AA was a little too ambitious so i wonder what he plans on doing differently.
Very interesting video. I was/am more of a strategy player, so I had a vague glimpse into Korean game industry through SC and SC2, but never known the MMORPG side.
Fantastic video, Kira! I really enjoyed this one, I liked your matter-of-fact approach and overall tone. I'll admit that your recent videos about E2 or CoE have partly seemed a little bit too mean for my personal taste, so this is a nice change of pace. While I know the other stuff is "your style" and I wouldn't want you to stop doing that at all, I'm hoping you can work a video like this one into your regular content every now and then. I'd be interested to hear more about the history of western MMOs, but also those of certain franchises or even companies (like gamigo, Pearl Abyss... XD) if you think you can find an angle to make those as interesting as this one. Keep up the good work, mister!
I'd love to see one for western mmos and another video about specific mmos that became popular in specific countries perhaps, like iirc knight online was very popular in Turkey for some reason

Really enjoyed this look through the history of a genre I have sunk thousands of hours into!
Nice non negative video about video games. Good job!
Nice job on this. You did a ton of research. You should continue doing this type of work. You're very good at it.
great video , really enjoyed the history thank you
Wow, this was really interesting and detailed. :) Very good work Kira! :)
Love when you do content like this man. Great upload
Great video!
Lineage 2 was great when it launched in the west, played it from around 2004-2010. It what made me completely miss the wow train. It just looked so much better
L2 during early years was fantastic for sure
@@KiraTV1 Same, after having played Lineage II, WoW had never been an option in my world.
Every Korean MMO I've played has been a second job. It's always about doing chores, every day. Sometimes you just say screw it, and go have an adventure - and then you feel bad about it because you're not doing your chores.
Nice video Kira! Very informative and really puts things into perspective.
Love to see this kind of content from you, great job Kira
great video, this needs more attention! exactly the kind of content i enjoy
It's nice to see how thw gaming scene looks like in other countries. I've always been curious about China with their strict laws. Gaming looks a lot different over there.
Great work! This is the type of content I have subscribed for.
Will Kira turn into a 'Kim Justice'-like documentary maker? I hope so! Great video Kira, keep it up 👍
I'm glad you mentioned this video in the Mir video, TH-cam didn't tell me about this at all :((
This was an enlightening video for sure, thank you!
Great video! Super interesting to watch and a really fun topic, tyvm!
These deep dive videos are awesome. Hopefully they pay off enough to be worth it because they’re very interesting.
Great Video! Very informative and interesting. Keep up the good work!
An amazing insight. Thanks for all your hard work, Kira.
This is great stuff, Kira. Would love to see more 👍
Thanks for video. I'd like to see more like this doing a deep dive into some aspect of the MMO field.
I had no clue about Korean gaming in the past, so it's very interesting to learn how they were pushing the genre just as much if not more than in the west.
Very nice video! Thnx a lot for the research Kira!
This was a great watch, thanks Kira!
Great video! Love this type of content. Hope you make more. :)
Great video - would love more of these deep dives!
As you said, you should do a history of western mmorpg's next... I've been around since Meridian 59 so it should be interesting to see your take on everything.
Nice one KiraTV I appreciate your work
Loved the random clips sliced in of some amazing games, like SWG even though it's not Korean developed.
A condensed and concise video. Loved it.
Great video! I knew Jake Song was behind ArcheAge but I didn't realize he had such a resume.
Loved this as a game design student. Fascinating stuff!
Awesome video. I followed AA's development since 2009-10 and enjoyed listening to Jake Songs thoughts on the genre and what he was trying to do. Hopefully we get to hear a little more about AA2 in a this year. It sounds like he thinks AA was a little too ambitious so i wonder what he plans on doing differently.
amazing video, keep these deep dives coming
I really like this format, more deep dives would be great to see
Very interesting video. I was/am more of a strategy player, so I had a vague glimpse into Korean game industry through SC and SC2, but never known the MMORPG side.
great video bud. commend the effort you put into this
Would love to watch this kind of content from you 👏 thank you for this great video
Keep up the good work, mister!
hope you will do more of these History videos. Love it so much.
Great video. I feal like a lot was cut from this video but it leaves me wanting more.
Fantastic Video. Really enjoyed it.
Awesome video!
Super enjoyable video Kira
good stuff this Kira. very very decent content pal
I'd love to see one for western mmos and another video about specific mmos that became popular in specific countries perhaps, like iirc knight online was very popular in Turkey for some reason
Great video Kira - keep up the good work 🤜💥🤛
P.S.
Was that Paul Rudd in the Nintendo commercial??
