Yea that’s correct, they aren’t designed for reusing sadly. A good alternative is to take a static bung and remove the bend of the hook if needed and just buy float stoppers
The longer I done Flyfishing for trout, the more I appreciate the importance of using the proper float/indicator. The brits seem to do more stillwater fishing than we do. These Fario floats seem perfect and easy to use.
I am a competitor from Canada. Unfortunatly the bung isnt allowed in competitions here. It was but last National, they deicided to change the rules. Your videos on stillwater fishing are absolutly the best out there. Continue the good work !
So glad I found your Videos went to a venue I normally go to yesterday and struggle to get 2 fish a day tried bung for the first time and I had 7 fish landed and I missed countless takes. My best day fishing ever. You certainly helped me CATCH MORE 🐟 cheers
Rhys, Thank you. I do enjoy your videos. Last summer, I ordered some of the Fario fixed Bungs and do like them. I would like to see them make a "Quick Release" style bung which "releases" when a fish is hooked and then slides freely on the leader. This prevents the situation of the Bung getting caught in the rod tip when stripping in or reeling in line when bringing the fish to the net when fishing deeper than 10" - 12', even when using a 10' long rod. These "Quick Release" style indicators are very popular with Stillwater fly fishers in the US and Canada. Thanks from Portland, Oregon!
I'm relatively new to fly fishing but have been going regularly and it's my new favourite hobby. I started about 5 years ago and stopped but have picked it up again a couple of months ago and so far out of 4 or 5 trips, I'm yet to blank which is hopeful! Went to garn fishery the other day and it was really hard going, everyone was using bungs and catching loads and I didn't have any or know how to use them! I stood in 45mph winds getting hammered by rain for 6+ Hours, and unfortunately my waterproofs weren't waterproof enough and I got freezing cold and soaked! Luckily I caught one fish but it wasn't big. This video has helped loads so hopefully I can give bungs a go in the future if I can get my hands on some! I have since ordered some proper waterproofs Haha. Great video Rhys heres to hoping I can win those bungs so I can put them to good use!
Used to make my own from yarn and old plastic cotton bud tube. Tie the egg yarn on wit thread and bit of super glue/ varnish. Brush the yarn out and leader goes through tube then wedge cocktail stick in. Worked just as well if not better than the foam bungs.
Thanks Rhys appreciated as always 🎣🎣 have a friend who has used them for a number of years now I gave it ago about a year or so and now use them for a part of the day every time I fish a new venue. 👌
Just new to Trout fishing and have found a few fishery's don't like them so I was thinking, add on some thread or dubbing as you suggested. Thank you for your tips & tricks on fishing for trout, I find you videos very informative.
Best fishing channel on TH-cam the depth you go into is so helpful, went from catching a couple to a pb day catching 26 on an unstocked lake keep up the awesome work buddy
Another informative video. I fish with a pal who gets tired with repeatedly casting over a fishing session. I have tried to convert him to use the bung and these would convince him to go for it
I started fishing the bung earlier this year and it's got me countless number of fish..I tend to find you get bigger trout than I would normally pulling lures or fishing naturals. Keep up the good work 🎣
First video I have seen that actually explains the concept of bung fishing, and the competition rules. being relatively new to the sport it has inspired me to have a go next time out on the water..great job Rhys
Great video easy to follow the instructions. Just getting back into fly fishing after a few of the trout lakes near me closed down. I will definitely try the bung method as it looks like great fun. Thank you.
Mate! You really do listen to your audience. Good on ya :D Been waiting for this all week. I knew it'd come soon. And on point as always! Keep sharing! For every video you make we catch more fish! :D PS. That sliding indicator looks wicked! I'll most likely be using some of the small to medium ones of those for midge rigs like you've shown. So far I havent liked the ones my mates bought from the shops but this one is perfect for finding the fish with my midge nymphs. Less the hassle of having to spend 15 mins on changing the position of the indicator. Perfect! Keep sharing mate! Cheers again!
I’ve never fished the bung, my son said I should try it so after watching your bung set up video I’ll watch your bung fishing video and hopefully try bung fishing.👍🎣🎣
Hi Rhys. I have never fished the bung. I think it will be a great addition to my fly fishing arsenal. I really enjoy your videos, as I'm not a very experienced angler and you offer a lot of knoledge! All the best! Keep it up!
Thanks for the video - great detail as per usual. I would use the static bung as an attractor with an Apps 18" t0 3' under it and retrieve with fast figure of 8 retrieve so that the bung bobbles along the surface to attract the trout to see what all the fuss is about and then they see the apps and attack it and get hooked.
Great video as always!! I’d plan to use the bungs to start as a way to teach my wee boy who is coming up for seven how to fly fish. Teach I’m how to handle the fish when hooked and get him hopefully into the sport!
I would like to try the bungs so that I can leave my STATIC van, SLIDE over to the fishery and BUNG the resulting trout on the grill. I have seen a number of different versions on the market by those seem to be really good. Thanks for all the videos. You are really helping me to get into the sport. Will Duckworth
In all my 14 years of fishing I've never used a bung. Always been put off by setting it up ect. But very well explained rhys might have to give it a bash at garn in the winter 👍🏼
What another great video with very easy explanation I would love to get my hand on these bungs and get use them on mid wales mountain lakes many thanks dai 👍😊🏴🏴🏴🏴
Great video, really top quality channel. I’m getting my wife into fly fishing, I would add them to her soon to arrive setup and help her catch her first big (hopefully) trout this winter.
Great video bud. I've tried quite a few types but never tried those fario sliding ones, didn't know how they worked so thanks for the information. I'd love to show you my home made ones at some point. Maybe catch you down garn when me and Gareth from ukflyfisher go next. Keep up the good work 👍

Would love to try the sliding bungs as well I think it gives you the best chance of finding fish. l Always feel a bit daunted starting at a new water but this technique will be what I try next when faced with the unknown. Thanks for the vids Rhys 🤭
I actually caught a few fish using that method with the same cat bug yesterday. Sometimes I tie a dropper on when using the sliding bung so I can cover the depths quicker once I've found the depth they are feeding I change to a static.
Hello, my name is Timothy and I live in Gothenburg in Sweden. I'll really try these bungs in Swedish waters, fishing for brown trout, sea trout, rainbow trout, and char as well as coarse fish. I'll test them in club waters as well as in wild lakes and by the coast. I'll also follow your advice and start competing. I will also teach my boys fishing with them. :) Kind regards, Timothy
Would love some freebie bungs, just taken up fly fishing this year after inheriting my Dads fly gear. Unfortunately most of the bungs I had are now hanging in trees like Xmas decorations, but my casting is coming along better now.
Another excellent informative video Rhys, especially for guys like myself who are new to the fly rod this year. I have been using the bung method with great effect thanks to your previous videos and so would use these fario ones to hopefully continue that and catch even more, bigger, fish 🤞🏻🎣👍🏻
Hello Rhys, I would love to try them out on the 35 Ha Reservoir that I fish. it is called Bergerven in Belgium. Like the cannel and keep up the good work of making us beter fly-fishers.
You could fish that static bung as a slider if you rig it up correctly. I’m new to fly fishing but am match fishing from the beach for over 20 years. We fish slider rigs with 3 hooks on surf beaches for bass and flounder and you could set the bung up with the same principles so long as they come under fips guidelines.
They aren’t built for re-use but can be done so with some moving around. I personally wouldn’t bother though. Try using static bungs with line stoppers as an alternative 🙂
Hi Rhys, thanks for the informative video! Two questions: would you keep the same width leader between the bung and nymph even if it was 10ft+? how do you attach the non-tapered leader to the fly line loop? Do you just clinch it or do you create a loop for loop-to-loop?

Agreed. In 90% of cases i've found the fish will take the bung across either at 90 degree angle from your position or 180 degrees (facing your direction). Rarely will a fish take the bung facing the same direction as you as naturally the leader/fly line will be in the way as it were. There are some bungs out there tied with the sole intention of being fish catching bungs (a heavy dressed with foam blob as an example) and on their day they can give that slight edge!
Fished a static bung NZ style last weekend. Really sensitive for takes. 2 rainbows on a rubber legged egg and a blue and rainbow on an okay dokay. Will try the same again this weekend.

Rhys I usually use a sliding bung. I sometimes use a piece of booby cord, attached to the line with a coarse fishing pellet band. You can also add it to the head of a fly turning it into an instant popper hopper and instantly turning you set up into a washing line. But don't tell anyone, its secret....

It can work equally as well. The only difference is that you’d find buzzers under a bung far more effective in the summer months than your usually winter patterns
Great video, as always! When using the Fario static bung, why would you not just tie the main leader and the dropper off the eye of the bung, as opposed to attaching the bung via a dropper?
You can do that if you're pleasure fishing however be mindful that it could put some unnecessary strain on the main body of the leader and lead to potential snap offs. For competitions a bung must be attached via a length of dropper leader so we have to use a dropper style set up :)
Tend to get quite impatient using the bung, and forever think the bung sinks when it’s the ripples. Would definitely spend a bit of time using them, especially the sliding bung and try and improve on using the bung

how do you attach the non-tapered leader to the fly line loop? Do you just clinch it or do you create a loop for loop-to-loop?

I've just bought some of the sliding ones. I've one question. How do I take them off and put it back on the wire they came on? 😕
They aren't designed to be reusable unfortunately. If only they were :)
@@RhysFishes ok, thanks Rhys
Hi rhys what fluora carbon do you use
Cbc fluorocarbon
Are the bung stops reusable ?
